Scott Charland on Networking, Negotiating Pay, and Being Successful at Any Level of S&C

Here are some questions every trainer and coach should be asking themselves: What are the pros and cons to the different levels of strength and conditioning? As a strength coach, how do you find a work-life balance? And perhaps most importantly, how do you know what you’re REALLY worth? Well if you’ve ever pondered any of these questions before, you’re going to love today’s interview with Scott Charland! Scott currently serves as the Manager of Human Performance for Parkview Sports Medicine in Fort Wayne, IN.  In this role, he oversees 21 strength and conditioning coaches from the High School, Collegiate, and private sector. And prior to his current position, Charland was a collegiate strength and conditioning coach for 20 years where he led the Olympic Strength and Conditioning departments at Saint Louis University, Temple University and Butler University. In this episode, we dive in and get real about what life in strength and conditioning is like. Whether it’s determining what level you want to coach at, how to get paid what you’re worth, or simply to find better balance between work and play, I know everyone listening is going to love this episode. Let’s do this!   Can every high school in the country have a strength coach that’s qualified? Are we going to be able to add 5,000 jobs in the next 10 years to fill them with quality coaches? – Scott Charland   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Scott’s background and how he got started in strength and conditioning. His long and winding career arc, and what his current gig at Parkview Sports Medicine looks like. What are the pros – and cons – of high school, collegiate, and private strength and conditioning? What does the future of strength and conditioning look like? And will we have enough qualified coaches? How much are you REALLY worth as a strength coach? The answer might surprise you. The importance of transparency in wages, and how doing this can help make sure everyone is getting paid. How to negotiate for yourself, and why it’s imperative you don’t let employers push you around. Why 5-10% may mean NOTHING to an employer and everything to you. The power of networking and growing your inner circle. Thoughts on how to achieve some semblance of work/life balance. And last but not least, the BIG question and lightning rounds!     Connect with Scott: Scott on X/Twitter Scott on Instagram   Related Links: PSM Performance Website   Stop the Frustration! 10 Keys to Successful Basketball Strength & Conditioning

I’m going to start this one off with a bold statement: I don’t love where the industry is at with regards to training basketball players. Now before you get all pissed off and click away, hear me out. These young men and women are playing more games than ever before. Yes we’re getting them “in the gym” – but are we putting too much of an emphasis on pure “strength” development? And last but not least, how can we evolve our own programs to best prepare them for the sport? If your goal is to think differently and help your basketball players see more success in the months and years to come, this is the podcast for you. Let’s do this!   As physical preparation coaches, there’s more to it than just getting strong – we have to teach them how to move. – MR   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Why you NEED strength training in your programs (and it’s not JUST for strength). The critical role exercise selection plays in your program design process – and why it should be more than just power cleans, back squats and bench presses. My cars analogy for thinking about athletes and their physical outputs. Why you MUST understand the movements basketball players make during the game. How to be smarter and more focused with your conditioning efforts. Force Distribution: Why it’s important, and how to build it into your workouts. Unless you’re Wemby or Zion, why you should help athletes find a player to model. How private and high school/college strength coaches can work together to build better hoopers. Why training the brakes is key to your athletes’ success. The role of connection in building better basketball players.     Related Links: IFAST Basketball Insider’s Cam Josse on Sprint Training, Neural Outputs and Football-Specific Speed Lee Taft Podcasts Matt Aldred on Drop Landings, Wearable Resistance and Being Dangerous at Everything   Subscribe, Rate & Share! Cameron Josse on Sprint Training, Neural Outputs, and Football Specific-Speed

Cameron Josse is an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach for football at Auburn University. Before joining the Auburn Tigers, Cameron served as an Athletic Performance Coach for football at Indiana University. And his journey in sports performance began with a 7-year stint at DeFranco’s Training Systems, where he held the position of Director of Sports Performance from 2014-2020. In this episode of the show, we dive into a bunch of fun topics, but they all revolve around a central theme – SPEED! For instance, how has Cam’s speed training philosophy evolved over the years? How is he maximizing speed development with his football players? And in one of my favorite parts of the show, how can we prevent hamstring pulls in high-speed running?   Do I have control over that position and that range of motion? And to me, that’s neurally driven – and it comes back to coordination. – Cameron Josse   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: What’s new with Cam since the last time we chatted. Why on earth did he decide to pursue a Ph.D. WHILE ALSO being a full-time strength coach in the SEC? How his speed training philosophy has changed and evolved over the past 10 years. Cam’s thoughts on using speed training to develop the nervous system (versus just the weight room). The buckets they’re using to classify their football players. How those buckets then drive better speed programming for each individual athlete. The myriad reasons that play into why someone might pull a hamstring. His thoughts on the Nordic hamstring curl, and if it should play a role in your training program. And last but not least, what’s next for Cam in the months and years to come!     Connect with Cameron: Cameron on X   Related Links: No More Pulled Hamstrings (Article from MR) Frans Bosch Book Cameron Josse on Building a Blazing Fast 10   Stop the Frustration! Joe Kenn on R7, Training Around Injuries, and How to Improve High School S&C

You know some guests really need no introduction, but in case you’re unfamiliar with Joe “Big House” Kenn, let me fill you in real quick on this guys’ rap sheet…. He’s a 30+ year vet of the strength and conditioning game. He’s worked – and had success – at every level of physical preparation, from high school to the pros. He spent 9-years in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers, which included a trip to Super Bowl 50. And to my knowledge, he’s the ONLY COACH to be named NSCA Strength Coach of the Year at both the collegiate and professional levels. So needless to say, I’m pretty sure he knows a thing or two about S&C! And in today’s episode, Joe and I dive into a whole bunch of topics: From how he’s using R7 with his programs, to training and working around injuries, and finally with a little chat about the arms race that is the high-school S&C game. This one is a doozy – let’s do it!   I don’t try pieces of equipment…I TRAIN equipment. – Joe Kenn   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: What’s new with Joe. What he’s learned being on the road and speaking over the past couple of years. The role that strength training plays in building confidence. Why the word is still “Win.” How Joe’s training has evolved over the years. His Tortoise Training program – version 1.0 and 2.0. What his current strength training goals are, and why he’ll be doing his last meet soon. How Joe is integrating the Hawkin Dynamics force plates into his training. His thoughts on the HS weight room game, and why we’re seeing some AMAZING high school weight rooms. Last but not least Joe’s thoughts on development, and why it might be harder to develop young athletes than ever before.     Connect with Joe: BigHousePower.com Joe on Instagram YouTube (Inside the House)   Related Links: Avon High School Weight Room Listen to ALL of Joe’s Previous Podcasts HERE    Supercharge Your Decision-Making and Program Design with Hawkin Dynamics Force Plates! 10 Random Thoughts on Training, Coaching and Professional Development

I’m always thinking about coaching. Whether it’s hanging out in the gym, watching my kids play with their friends, or just watching sports and TV, I’m constantly thinking about the role we play in other people’s lives. But as one person in this great big world, how do we have the biggest impact on the clients and athletes we coach? How can we not only help them, but in turn, make ourselves feel more successful along the way? These are some of the main themes and tenets in this week’s podcast, and regardless of where you’re at in your coaching journey, I think you’re going to love this episode. Let’s do this!   Athletes always need someone that believe in them MORE THAN they believe in themselves. – MR   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Why it’s okay (and even expected!) for you to suck as a coach when you’re starting out. The entry-level trait you MUST have if you want to be successful. Should you be investing in yourself? Or in others? What Roy Hibbert taught me about vision and belief in coaching. Why it’s so critical to distinguish YOUR goals in training from THEIR goals. The best way to use and leverage social media if you have a small list or audience. What I was reminded of in attending the Northeast Indiana Sports Performance Clinic last weekend – and how it applies to YOU. One of the most important things you should be doing once you’ve passed the 5-year mark in your career… Why it’s so critical you take care of yourself first as a coach or health practitioner. And don’t forget: You have a pretty awesome job!     Related Links: Complete Coach Seminar   Subscribe, Rate & Share! Tony Gentilcore on Gym Ownership, Evolving Your Coaching, and the Value of Consistent Training

Tony Gentilcore has done a few things in our industry. He’s a prolific writer, traveled the globe to speak, and was one of the co-founders of Cressey Sports Performance and worked there as a coach from 2007-2015. And his newest venture includes opening The Core Collective, where his goal is to bring trainers, coaches and physical therapists all under one roof to help better serve their clients and athletes. In this show, Tony and I talk about the power of consistent training, how his philosophy has changed over the years, and why after years of reluctance, he finally decided to become a gym owner. We had a few technical difficulties throughout the show, so apologies because the audio is a bit suspect. We did our best to clean it up and I hope you still enjoy the show!   Now my clients are more self-selecting…they know what they’re getting when they come to me. – Tony Gentilcore   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: A brief intro and what’s new with Tony. How he got started as a personal trainer – and living with THE Eric Cressey. His first article at T-Nation, and the best advice he ever got about writing from TC Luoma. Tony’s thoughts on how his training philosophy has evolved from when he started to today. Along those same lines, how HIS training has changed over the years – and why. Why he decided to go out on his own, and his initial thoughts and feelings during that time. The Core Collective: What it is, and why these types of models could be the future of the fitness industry. Lee Taft on Plyo Steps, Lateral Running, and the Power of the Heels

In my humble opinion, Lee Taft might be the true GOAT of multi-directional speed. While Lee primarily works as a consultant these days, over his storied career he’s owned his own facility numerous times, coached at virtually every level of sport, and perhaps more importantly has coached just about every type of athlete under the sun – all which gives him a truly unique approach and understanding of speed development. In this episode, we take a deep dive into numerous areas of speed development – including deceleration and braking, why the heels are so critical, why “sport-specific” training is largely a myth, and much, much more. Let’s do this!   I never want to neglect the posterior chain, but we gotta catch the quads up! – Lee Taft   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: A little background on Lee, and what’s new since the last time we chatted. How a coach yelling at his basketball team helped him discover the “plyo step.” POP: What it means, and how it will improve your lateral running. Lee’s keys to deceleration, slowing down, and building the brakes. The EXACT progression he takes athletes through to build braking skills. How he teaches athletes to find their ideal athletic stance (and a little kinesthetic cue that will work wonders!) What it means to “create” or “escape” space How you can program and coach for multiple athletes across different sports. One thing that Lee really has to take into account in his programming these days that he didn’t in the past. His thoughts on the return to play (RTP) process, and how to integrate speed and power work back into their programs.     Connect with Lee: LeeTaft.com Lee on Instagram Lee’s Speed Seminar in June   Related Links: Lee Taft on Building Elite Multi-Directional Speed (covers his model on all movements!) Spring Break 2024: Q1 Review and Q2 Goals for RTS and IFAST

One thing I’ve really focused on over the past couple of years is what some might describe as “radical transparency.” While many people on social media are out there creating a highlight reel on the front-end but suffering miserably on the back-end, my goal is to give you real insights into both my personal and professional life, so you can see what it’s really like to have a family, run your own business, and attempt to do all the things. So in today’s episode, we’re going to reflect on my previous episode titled 2024 Dreams, Goals and Aspirations, to see if I’m really on track to get what I want to done this year. Interested? Great – let’s do this!   As long as the people who are listening are deriving value and becoming better at the craft by listening to the show, then we’re on the right track. – Mike Robertson   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: A quick overview and recap as to what’s new so far in 2024. My primary goals for 2024, and how I’m doing on them so far. How my physical goals mesh with my professional goals, and things I still need to work on here. The IFAST 4.0 buildout, and insights as to the future of the gym. Why re-building my Program Design Mentorship was such a great experience for me (and the people who joined the group). Matt Aldred on Drop Landings, Wearable Resistance, and Being Dangerous at Everything

If you train basketball players and want to take their health and performance to the next level, you’re going to love this episode! Matt Aldred is in his sixth season at Furman and was promoted to assistant head coach and director of basketball health and performance in August of 2023. Beyond basketball, Matt also handles the strength and conditioning programs for men’s golf, and men’s and women’s cross country. But let’s be honest – this show is all about hoops! Today we’re going to cover why Matt’s focused on individualizing programs and the buckets he uses to group his basketball players, how to manage and improve the performance of facially driven athletes, and in one of my favorite segments we discuss the role and implementation of drop landings into his programs.   These guys have high aspirations. They are compelled. They’re not committed or compliant – they’re compelled. So it’s our jobs to be like “Let’s rock! You want to train 6-days per week? Let’s go!” – Matt Aldred   This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: Matt’s background, and what got a soccer (Football!) player started in the world of physical prep. His career arc, and how he got started working at Furman. Why individualization is such a key piece of the puzzle for him. The buckets he uses to define his basketball players, and how that helps him write more effective programs. What “fascial” based-athletes are, and what they need to find that blend between performance and health. Drop Landings: What they are, and why you should consider using them in your programs. The KPI’s Matt is tracking with his drop landings. Get started today! The sets, reps and box heights he would prescribe to someone new with drop landings. Wearable resistance: What it is, and why Matt’s liking it. The role of novelty in training of high-level athletes. The BIG Question.
