Episode #154. Interview with Peter Baines on why leadership matters
In this conversation Shelley talks with the remarkable Peter Baines to unravel why leadership truly matters. After following Peter's journey for many years it was such a pleasure to learn more about him as the founder of the charity Hands Across the Water.
This extraordinary organisation was born in the wake of the heart-wrenching 2004 tsunami in Thailand to help children left orphaned, raising an astonishing $33 million along the way. But there's more to Peter's story.
For 22-years, Peter worked within the Police Force in the elite Forensics Service Area in NSW, where he played an integral role in the aftermath of events like the Bali Bombings and the Thailand tsunami.
Their conversation delves into the heart of leadership dynamics, shedding light on the delicate balance between wielding control and igniting the fires of collective purpose.
It’s an invigorating discussion that explores the very fabric of leadership, as they debunk the notion of 'do as you're told' in favour of ‘bringing people on the journey’.

Episode #150. Part Three on Feedback with Dwight Hodge - Giving Feedback
This is the final episode of the three part series exploring feedback. In this conversation Dwight and Shelley talk about GIVING feedback. How to do it well, what to avoid and making sure you’re really clear on what’s in it for the person receiving it.
They talk about the difference between offering advice/opinions, holding people accountable and giving feedback. Before giving any kind of feedback it’s essential to provide the context so the receiver understands the broader purpose.
It’s even more important to ask permission…yet this is often the thing that’s missed. Giving unsolicited feedback (or advice) can damage relationships and diminish the psychological safety in a team.
The three C’s of giving feedback are Current, Contextual and Clean.

Episode #147. Shelley talks about saying no without damaging your brand
What Shelley has learnt throughout her career is that if you don’t say ‘no’, the work won’t stop coming through. It’s up to everyone individually to manage expectations around workload and continue to have conversations about what’s realistic and what isn’t.
There seems to be a connection between not saying no and burnout or exhaustion and it’s hitting leaders hard this year. Saying ‘no’ can be done without damaging your brand, Shelley shares how you might approach these conversations.
