Episode 78: Food Addiction — Is This You?
Addiction professionals say some very wise things. For instance, Dr. Vera Tarman, author of Food Junkies (I recommend reading the 2nd edition as she talks about bariatric surgery in this version) says, “From food addiction to food serenity – freedom tastes great!” Tennie McCarty, author of Shades of Hope says, “If you can’t take it or leave it, you’re probably addicted to it.” Dr. Gabor Mate, one of my favorite addiction specialists says, “There is one addiction process… whether it is manifested in the lethal substance dependencies; the frantic self-soothing of overeaters or shopaholics; the obsessions of gamblers, sexaholics, and compulsive internet users; or the socially acceptable and even admired behaviors of the workaholic.” I say, if food or your weight is causing problems in your life, then it’s a problem. Call it whatever you want, but if you know there’s a problem and can’t stop eating foods that make the problems worse, you’re likely dealing with addiction. That’s why I wrote Weight Loss Surgery Does NOT Treat Food Addiction. Listen to today’s episode and see if your relationship with food may suggest an addiction to food. Episode 77: Food Issues and Self-Esteem — Is There a Correlation?
I recently heard what turned into a controversial discussion on a radio show about whether or not someone who smokes suffers with low self-esteem. I gave the issue quite a bit of thought, broadening the question to pertain to those with food issues, alcohol issues and other addictive-type issues. My personal experience and my years as a professional working in the field of bariatrics, leads me to the conclusion that there is a correlation between food issues and self-esteem. I’m curious about what you’ll think after listening to today’s episode. Episode 76: Focus on the PROCESS!
“You’re Only Responsible for the Effort You Put Into Whatever You Do.” This sentence has had tremendous impact in my life. And I hope it will become a sentence that you learn to live by! People who have bariatric surgery tell me they want to live at a healthy weight and have an improved quality of life. In order for that to happen, they need to develop a healthy lifestyle that lasts for the rest of their life! Too many people focus on reaching a goal weight rather than on learning to live a healthy post op way of life. Developing a healthy lifestyle and putting effort into that process has a number of benefits including feeling less pressure, having improved self-confidence, and experiencing more happiness along the way. Not to mention, focusing on today’s effort keeps people from falling into old habits that result in weight regain! Listen in and learn more about the importance of focusing on the process rather than the outcome! Also, please invite anyone you know who has had bariatric surgery, or who is planning to have bariatric surgery, to listen to the BariAftercare podcast. Episode 74: REFUSE REGAIN — Addressing Resistance to Making Lifestyle Change
Consciously or subconsciously, many post-ops resist making the changes necessary to lose weight and to keep weight off. Well, that doesn’t make sense! People choose to have bariatric surgery. They’re informed prior to having it what they need to do behaviorally after surgery as they lose weight. They are told very specifically what behaviors they need to engage in to keep that weight off. So why would they resist doing those things? Listen in and learn about various reasons people seem to disregard the information they're given about living a healthy post-op lifestyle. And please share this episode with those who are struggling with issues related to regain and while you’re at it, check out the full BariAftercare program at www.bariaftercare.com. Thanks! Episode 72: Body Dysmorphic Disorder OR Body Image Dissatisfaction?
I’ve been hearing a lot of post-op bariatric patients using the words “body dysmorphia” quite a lot in the past couple of years in relation to how they are experiencing the changes in their bodies after major weight loss. I did some investigating as the little bit of information I had about body dysmorphic disorder did not seem to fit the description of what I heard these people discussing. Tune in to this episode and learn for yourself what I learned about the differences and similarities between body dysmorphic disorder and having trouble with body image issues. What you learn may help you get whatever help you need, if any, to deal with either of these issues. Both cause emotional despair and we want to minimize as much of that as possible! Episode 71: Health Coaching — Might it help YOU in your journey to maintaining a healthy weight?
Health coaching is becoming more and more popular, particularly in the field of bariatric medicine! Not everyone needs the deeper dive that takes place in therapy sessions, but could definitely use an additional support person. Health coaches are tremendous for assisting you in setting goals and being an accountability person to help you remain consistent in following through with your goals! Health coaches can make suggestions, share ideas other people have used to overcome a struggle, and literally or virtually walk with you through a trip to the grocery store or finding the right storage containers for a bariatric friendly meal. In this video, you’ll meet one health coach, located in the greater Atlanta area. Reach out to her or find someone qualified as a health coach in your area!Erin Garrett Bariatric Health Coach Website: www.BariatricHealthCoaching.comEmail: Erin@bariatrichealthcoaching.comPlease subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.conniestapletonphd.com, and follow me on Twitter (@cstapletonphd), Instagram (@cstapletonphd), YouTube, LinkedIn, and on Facebook.

Episode 70: Sleep and Your Weight
The information I recently learned about sleep as it relates to our health and weight has decidedly got me re-thinking the importance of sleep in my life! Bariatric patients often have one or more health comorbidities to include diabetes, sleep apnea, cardiovascular issues and hypertension. Wait until you hear how getting less than eight hours of sleep a night impacts those very same health conditions. The combination of comorbidities related to the disease of obesity and not getting enough sleep is alarming! Listen in, being sure to share this podcast with everyone you know (because really, how many people regularly get at least 8 hours of sleep a night). If you listen to this information, you’re likely to put more effort into getting more sleep than you do now! Check it out and for more information, read the book that all of these facts come from. Information about the book is in the Podcast Notes.Source: Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker, Steve West, et al.Please subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.conniestapletonphd.com, and follow me on Twitter (@cstapletonphd), Instagram (@cstapletonphd), YouTube, LinkedIn, and on Facebook.

Episode 69: Overall psychological strength and stability… for Sustained Weight
What does “overall psychological strength and stability” mean and what does that have to do with maintaining weight loss? Having what the researchers of the article we have been discussing for the past several episodes call “overall psychological strength and stability” basically means being a healthy adult. Well… that doesn’t clear things up very much! Listen in and I’ll explain why being able to at least act as if we’re psychologically healthy adults is important when it comes to keeping weight off. And maintaining weight loss after bariatric surgery is, after all, one of the main goals I hope you have when making the decision to have bariatric surgery. So let’s get on with finding out what a person with overall psychological strength and stability acts like! As always, please be sure to share this information with your friends! Encourage them to listen to BariAftercare, the Podcast and for additional information to include a worksheet I created on this topic, join the BariAftercare program by going to www.bariaftercare.com.
