Learning the importance of not letting your heart rule your head
We all love to train, we have a passion for living an active lifestyle, however one of the leading factors of injury is overtraining which is often due to people continuing to only do the things they love and neglect the things that they actually need to do. Kriss discusses his coaching frustrations and points out the important logical thought processes you’ll need to consider throughout your athletic career. We hope you enjoy! Does ultra distance running and cycling attract less experienced and conditioned athletes?
With the ‘boom’ in popularity of ultra distance events over the last 10 years there has never been more accessibility or desire to enter these once ‘unrealistic’ races. From a physiological standpoint it would be fair to say that there is a very wide mix of experience and physical capabilities amoungst those who take part. And due to the ‘adventure' nature of these ultra distance events, there is often less pressure put on how fast you do it and more emphasis on just completing it at your own pace. But what we are noticing more than ever, is that people are coming into the sport with potentially very little athletic background. Individuals lack the level of conditioning that is needed, making them less tolerant to the demands of ultra distance training and competition and more susceptible to injury and compromised performance. We work with individuals on a daily basis with goals ranging from 5k through to 250 miles and beyond. Whatever you’re in pursuit of, make sure that your body is ready to take on the demands you’re asking of it. Get it touch and we can discuss your next steps info@strengthforendurance.com We hope you enjoy! From the Archives: Can you train strength and endurance effectively at the same time?
We thought it would be fun to dip into the archives this week and have chosen to re release one of our most popular episodes, where Kriss answers the common question "Can you train strength and endurance effectively at the same time?" Whether you're listening to it again, you missed it the first time or maybe you're a new listener, we hope you enjoy and get some useful tips. For most endurance athletes time is a precious commodity. Regulary clients approach us who are training upwards of 15-20hours a week, whilst also trying to hold down a full time job and spend time with their families. Often this leads to corners being cut or sessions being squeezed in throughout the week, without much benefit. Todays episode asks the question of concurrent training and whether we can both strength train and complete our endurance sessions (run, bike, swim etc) at the same time; whether this be the same training phase, the same day or the same hour. If you're struggling to get the most out of every session or you just can't see where on earth you'd fit another strength session in, then this is a perfect listen for you. We hope you enjoy! Looking for more guidance on how to integrate strength training alongside your other training sessions whether it be run, bike, swim or hike then get in contact and we can show you how https://www.strengthforendurance.com/sfe-contact-form P.S. It's not always about how much you can lift
There is a naive belief that just getting strong is going to be the answer to overcoming pain and improving your performance. With many literally taking research as gospel when it comes to strength training and just pursuing 'heavy' resistance training.' The fact is that this is actually just one aspect. Listen in to todays episode as we discuss what you should be considering instead. Keep up to date with my recent coaching insights - here P.S. Forget about recovery, think adaptation
Rest or Recovery Days. What are you thought on them? Do they give you anxiety? Maybe you ignore them completely. Are you someone who knows what you should be doing, but finds it hard to actually execute. In a community full of incredibly driven, type A, highly productive and motivated individuals our biggest downfall can often be the ability to stop. However this could be actually be impacting you more than you believe. In todays podcast Kriss wants you to try and reframe things. By simply changing how you phrase and talk about rest and recovery, we can hopefully change your mindest towards it and in effect the benefits that it’ll bring to your training and performance capabilities.

Allowing yourself the opportunity to be an intuitive athlete
The power of working with a coach goes beyond just exercise prescription, it's based upon feedback, accountability and empathy. But one of the most beneficial aspects of working with experienced practitioners is the education you can learn along the way. Having the opportunity to enhance and develop the awareness and understanding you have of yourself allows you to make decisions on a daily, weekly and monthly basis that can have significant impacts on your health and performance. Join Kriss and Sophie in todays episode as they discuss more around this topic. Keep up to date with my recent coaching insights - here P.S. What I learnt from UTMB's CCC with SFE athlete Harry
As we all search for that elusive ‘perfect race’, we come to realise that it’s far from a straight forward process. We learn from our mistakes and try to replicate the things that go well, it really is a journey of trial and error. SFE client (and todays guest) Harry, joins Kriss for great chat off the back of his ‘A’ race at UTMB’s CCC event. Over the past 12 months Harry's knowledge around his optimal training approach, management and prevention of injury and the sport of ultra running has grown enormously. He’ll be the first to admit there are many things he still needs to learn but it’s been his recent performances and the visible change in his approach towards training and competition that we can all learn from.
