Patient burnout rising. Most of Primary Care Not Listening.

Our podcast guest, Editor/Author of Concierge Medicine Today   According to a February 27, 2023 article in TIME written by Jamie Ducharme just last year in a story titled Long Waits, Short Appointments, Huge Bills: U.S. Health Care Is Causing Patient Burnout she noted ... Part of the problem may go back to the way doctors are trained, says Jennifer Taber, an associate professor of psychological sciences at Kent State University and a co-author of the 2015 study on doctor avoidance. U.S. medical schools do an excellent job of teaching students how to practice medicine. But, she argues, they aren’t always as good at preparing students to be doctors, with all the interpersonal complexity that entails. “Patients won’t necessarily want to go back to doctors they don’t like,” she says. Even small gestures, like making eye contact with or leaning toward a patient as they speak, can help build a strong rapport, Taber says.[1]   References/Citations   https://time.com/6257775/patient-burnout-health-care/   ###   © Concierge Medicine Today, LLC. A Good Friday Prayer FOR Doctors

Our (replay) Good Friday CMT podcast guest this 2024 Good Friday is with our good friend, Dr. Bailey.    A Concierge Medicine Physician and a man of faith. Dr. Bailey has spent the past 45 years in the medical field and has seen the role of family medicine diminish significantly, to the detriment of the patients and their health.   While our discussion today isn't necessarily a message about the events of Easter, the events of Easter are still relevant today than ever because on this week, something happened FOR the world. There was a mark left on this world that many believe happened 2,000 years ago.   I think this message from Dr. Bailey from the archive of Concierge Medicine Today's podcast vault is relevant FOR Doctors because you love people who are difficult to love every day. You talk to, treat with compassion and kindness people who are nothing like you and who may never like you back. You give them hope for the future. If you're a person of faith, on this week, you and I have enter a story that makes no sense to this world. Yet, there's evidence that we have stepped into a Kingdom that has a King who chose to give his life and who is worthy of his name.   LEARN MORE ABOUT DR. BAILEY at: baileyfamilymedicalcare.com   We hope you find this message, this moment and the prayer FOR Doctors timely and relevant to your own career and journey into patient care. We certainly all need to pray and better support the Doctors, Nurses, PAs and the like better in our world. And what better message is there than the events of Easter that changed the world 2,000 years ago.   © Concierge Medicine Today, LLC. Challenges Faced By Female Healthcare Entrepreneurs

Our special podcast guest today is Estelle Giraud, the Co-Founder and CEO at Trellis Health.    "Our goal is to empower the next generation of parents to take ownership of their family's health. We want to help new parents feel confident and capable when taking on the job of managing the health of their entire family, and build a platform that will ease the minds of new parents everywhere." ~Estelle Giraud, the Co-Founder and CEO at Trellis Health.    In today's podcast, we unpack:   Curated, educational tools that provide guidance and confidence as mothers and families navigate their maternal health journey. Venture Capital Challenges Among Female Entrepreneurs In Healthcare Protecting Private Patient Information Challenges Faced By Female Entreprenuers Taking back personal agency in pre and postnatal healthcare   "I'm a founder passionate about human health and I'm also a new mother," said Estelle. "My experience was pretty intense but not uncommon; including IVF, an emergency C-section, prenatal hypertension, postpartum preeclampsia and medication incompatibilities. I had to monitor my blood pressure multiple times a day, track symptoms, maintain a complex medication schedule, stay on top of a calendar full of appointments and reminders, and had a multitude of genetic and blood tests. There were so many apps and tools out there that would tell me the size of my baby, what carrier was best, or what milestones they were reaching in utero, but there was nothing to really help me manage my own health. And while my care team was fantastic - my information was so siloed it created inevitable gaps in my care. I've moved several times and seen many different physicians both before and during my pregnancy, and the lack of continuity left me feeling anxious and frustrated. I felt I had to stay on top of my own care and information or it would slip through the cracks... my baby and I would slip through the cracks."   Trellis Health is a one stop shop for navigating pregnancy and beginning of life care. When starting or growing a family, navigating the siloed complexities of necessary medical care adds stress and frustration to a new parent's already full plate. Trellis Health is here to create lasting change and reframe the way pregnant moms take control of their care. As a new mother herself, Estelle is especially focused on personalizing medical care to the individual and ensuring no new mothers (or babies!) slip through the cracks.   "I spoke with dozens of women, and discovered that my experiences were not unique; quite the opposite," notes Estelle. "Frustration, concerns around maternal health risks, missed information leading to avoidable mistakes, it was all a common burden of responsibility for these women. I believe we can fill some of these gaps and ease the "pregnancy health load" with a secure, private health data system and some very simple digital tools that allow your health data to work for you in a meaningful way. This is one of the most important health journeys of your life, building a human. We have to do a better job at supporting women through this."   © Concierge Medicine Today, LLC. The Sunday Scaries

Our podcast guest is the Editor/Author of Concierge Medicine Today   Nearly every Physician fights a gladiator-like battle every single week. And come Monday morning when you enter that arena you must mentally and physically prepare. The Sunday Scaries doesn't have to intimidate you, scare you or overwhelm you. It's time we talk about it in the open and make it well, not so scary ... anymore. The Cleveland Clinic defines Sunday Scaries as "feelings of intense anxiety and dread that routinely occur every Sunday."1   CNN Health even wrote a story entitled How to ward off the ‘Sunday scaries’ before the new week begins. Written by Jolanta Burke at the Centre for Positive Psychology and Health, RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences she writes, For many people, the Sunday scaries also happen due to the work they left behind on Friday evening. The anticipation of the next day, the work you might have to do and all the emails you’ll need to catch up on can cause anxiety. But working through the weekend isn’t the answer either – and could actually leave your mental health worse off. [2] (Source/Credit: CNN Health; Published 8:02 AM EDT, Sun August 14, 2022)   On today's podcast we talk about what it means, ways to reduce anxiety[3], ideas Physicians can use to wrestle with this topic and more. Maybe your Sunday is on Wednesday afternoon, depending on your hectic schedule. Whatever the day may bring, the Sunday blues, the Sunday Scaries ... it's contributing to Physician burnout and we need to talk about it so it's not quite so scary anymore.   Why?   Nearly every Physician fights a gladiator-like battle every single week. And come Monday morning when you enter that arena you must mentally and physically prepare. The Sunday Scaries doesn't have to intimidate you, scare you or overwhelm you. Inflammation in the Patient-Physician relationship.

Our podcast guest today is Editor/Author of Concierge Medicine Today   I’m not a Physician, but I am a Patient … so the perspective that provides this article today is that I know exactly what it’s like to sit on the other side of you!   From a patient perspective, I can tell you first-hand, there is no such thing as an emotionless visit.   I can also tell you with certainty, that everything communicates!   And I mean everything.   Every Patient feels the vision you have for them within seconds of walking into your practice. In fact, the message your communicating to your Patients and community actually started weeks ago with the phone call I made to schedule today’s appointment. Then there was the convenience of the location. Then, the parking spot. Then, the design elements outside your office. Everything communicates. If it is true that every Physician ends up somewhere in life wouldn’t it be great if at the end of your career you and your Patient(s) ended up somewhere you intended FOR them to be? Easier said than done, right? Especially because you don’t have control over the parking, the plants outside that I walk past nor, how strenuous and difficult it is to simply be my Doctor in today’s need it yesterday culture.   © Concierge Medicine Today, LLC. How gratitude [toward Patients] sticks with Physicians who display it.

Our podcast guest, Editor/Author, Concierge Medicine Today   Often times we hear, being a Physician can be one of the loneliest jobs in the world, despite the amount of places and faces you meet and/or visit each day.   Over the past twenty years I've had the pleasure of interviewing and spending hours of one-on-one time with hundreds of Physicians from all walks of life. Many of whom are now friends and Physicians I deeply respect, admire and call some of my closest and dearest friends.   From the Doctor who made it his mission to care for the homeless population in Boston, Mass., to Physician-CEOs who are some of the smartest people I've every met. I've had the pleasure of sitting down for years now and asked these great Physicians about their pathways to happiness, professional and financial success and who've seemingly obtained what every Doctor desires, career satisfaction while remaining a servant to the Patient. Subsequently, many of these great Physicians practice Concierge Medicine.   As I've sat down for coffee with Physicians or on a podcast or visited their practice, I see first-hand how hard they work. They inspire Patients, their peers and toil at some of the best and largest healthcare institutions in the world. They have greatest job in the world and some have incredibly high positions of leadership and influence among their peers and their Patients. One of the most unique observations I've learned and continue to share with you today is that they all inherently have a few things in common.   First, they understand that who and what they listen to right now will impact their future.   © Concierge Medicine Today, LLC.
