We have committed to throwing a FREE Marketing School Live Event in Los Angeles, once Marketing School reaches 1M downloads in a 30 day period. Take action: Rate, review, subscribe, and SHARE. Check the progress here! TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:27] Today’s Topic: What You Ought to Do With Your Old Content That Gets No Traffic [00:36] Everyone uses the “prune and crop” strategy, but most people use it incorrectly. [01:05] Using this, there is a good chance you could decrease your traffic. [02:20] HubSpot hires people to maintain and upgrade their content. [02:40] At Single Grain, we take the top 25 pieces and see if anything new is on the list. If the new content ranks, we check how many keywords for which it ranks. [02:57] If it ranks for hundreds of keywords, you are in good shape. [03:20] Neil has employees that are hired specifically to upgrade content. [03:46] They are tasked with upgrading the higher-ranked content. [03:53] Use Clickflow to A/B test your title tags. [04:30] See if you have internal links to your posts, if you don’t: add them. [04:53] Don’t forget to check comments to see where you need to improve. [05:24] BuzzSumo added the “evergreen score” and this helps you compare yourself to competitors. [05:58] An evergreen score is calculated by looking at the number of links going to a given page, number of social engagements, and how long the post has been live. [06:19] That’s it for today! [06:26] We hit our goal of 1 Million downloads! So, we will be throwing a free event in Los Angeles. Check out our website and continue listening to our podcast for further details. TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:27] Today’s Topic: How to Use Amazon for Content and Product Development [00:38] People feel compelled to write all kinds of reviews on Amazon, which gives you valuable insight. [01:06] Squatty Potty is a bathroom tool. If you wanted to make a product that competed, you would find out what the shortcomings are and make a superior product. [02:00] Neil loves the 1-3 star reviews, because it gives him good product development and content marketing ideas. [02:45] Look at marketing as finding problems and coming up with solutions. [03:22] The 4 and 5 star reviews don’t tell you as much as the other reviews. [03:42] 1 star reviews are usually just pissed out customers, so 2-3 star reviews will be the most helpful. [04:20] Look for feedback on ways to improve your competing product. [04:24] That’s it for today! [04:31] We hit our goal of 1 Million downloads! So, we will be throwing a free event in Los Angeles. We have committed to throwing a FREE Marketing School Live Event in Los Angeles, once Marketing School reaches 1M downloads in a 30 day period. Take action: Rate, review, subscribe, and SHARE. Check the progress here! TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:27] Today’s Topic: What You Should Do in a PR Crisis [00:38] The Fyre Festival debacle is a great example of a PR crisis for a lot of the people involved. [01:10] Celebrities were paid to promote this event and the event basically didn’t exist. [01:26] There are two documentaries about it on Netflix and Hulu. [01:40] In the weeks leading up to the Fyre Festival, they realized they weren’t ready to throw the event. [02:15] The result was an insane situation. [02:38] Typically, it’s good to admit when you’re wrong, instead of doubling down like the Fyre Festival organizers. [03:00] Deal with a crisis by being transparent. [03:11] Be willing to take advice about what to do to remedy the problem. [03:35] Treehouse allowed some people to buy the service at a lower cost and pissed off the people who paid more. [04:07] Eric made a point to apologize to the CTO and investors. Admitting his mistake was helpful. [05:05] Also, Treehouse was called out for divulging sensitive information about their users, when they were not. They had to do a lot of damage control. [05:48] That’s all for today! [01:10] Social platforms want people to be on their platform for long periods of time, so they see more ads. [01:20] If you post on social media, you get rewarded for popular content. [01:40] Whatever resonates with people will get circulated more by the site. [01:50] Engagement is the secret to winning. [02:08] We haven’t done that well on Instagram, because we are not optimized for Instagram. [02:35] Some people think longer content is better, but that isn’t accurate. [02:53] If you create long-form content, it doesn’t guarantee that you will get the full engagement out of that. [03:01] Check out “The Winning Formula For a Hot Script” by Sunny Lenarduzzi. She has a formula to keeping people engaged. [03:30] You will find that people will stay on your videos longer if you follow her format. [03:55] The formula applies to different forms of social media. [04:10] Ask for comments, as they have more value than likes. [05:44] That’s all for today!
