Nick Winkelman is the head of athletic performance & science for the Irish Rugby Football Union. Before working for Irish Rugby, Nick was the director of education and training systems for EXOS One of the PREMIER athletic development programs in the country.
Nick completed his PhD through Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions with a dissertation focus on motor skill learning and sprinting. Nick is a recognized speaker and consultant on human performance and coaching science and has numerous book chapters and peer reviewed papers focusing on the intersection between coaching language and athlete learning.
Nick Is the author of “The language of coaching: the Arte and science of teaching movement,” which is a phenomenal book not just about human movement, but learning, and how the human mind works
And that is why I wanted to have Nick on the show, because of his vast and unique knowledge of humans, how we think, how we learn, and why we do what we do.
Nick was gracious enough to chat with me all the way from Ireland, and we did have a few internet hiccups throughout the call, so there are a couple of brief moments where his audio cuts out, but this episode was so powerful and so packed full of knowledge, that It really doesn’t matter and I still couldn’t wait to share it with you

I was recently on the “make your course great” podcast, hosted by Kate Nash. Kate is an expert in marketing and course creation, and on her show she interviews coaches and course creators, so she had me on to talk about my new course “Quit quitting: the Proven System to Building Your Purposeful, Passionate Life.” In this episode, Kate helps me break down my course, and understand who needs it, and how I can best serve my clients, and the world.
This is a great “peek behind the curtain,” to get to see a little bit about what goes on in my head, and what I’m up to. This was recorded a few weeks ago, and I’ve actually already launched the first iteration of the course, which you’ll hear Kate talk about, and it’s going amazingly, and the participants are getting so much value out of it.

79) "Changing Behavior, Facing Your Demons, & Becoming 'Sober Powered'" w Gill Tietz
Gillian Tietz is the host of the "Sober Powered" podcast and is a biochemist out of the Boston area.
When Gill quit drinking in 2019, she dedicated herself to learning about alcohol's influence on the brain and how it can cause addiction. Today, she educates and empowers others to assess their relationship with alcohol.
This was a super interesting and topical conversation to me, because as some long time listeners know, I have had my own dark path with alcohol, and while I am not SOBER in the sense that I never drink, I’d say I’m about 95% of the way there, only having alcohol every couple of months, a handful of times a year tops.
A key factor in me turning my life around, from being blackout drunk, drug doing, belligerent, bad decision making, ass hat, to creating and becoming the happy, healthy, human, was me getting away from drinking so much.
This episode isn’t meant to tell anyone what to do, nor do I nor Gill seek to judge, or anything like that. If you like to drink, and have no plans on stopping, this episode is still going to be hugely impactful for you
And that is because of Gill’s unique perspective as a scientist, and how she understands the human body, and the human brain, and her insights around building and breaking habits, regardless of if those habits have anything at all to do with alcohol or not
