IFS and Inviting Curiosity with Racist Parts with Daphne Fatter
On today's episode, I chat with Dr. Daphne Fatter, certified IFS therapist and a licensed psychologist in private practice in Dallas, Texas. She teaches workshops on white racial socialization for therapists, in addition to teaching on trauma treatment for TZK seminars. She is a trained facilitator by Challenging Racism to lead conversations on race and racism. This is the last episode in the Heirloom Summit Series, and I'm excited to this with Daphne who walks through the Six Stage White Racial Developmental Model by Janet Helms. We also discuss teaching kids about whiteness, privilege and racism. The book that she mentions is "Raising White Kids: Bringing up children in a racially unjust America" by Jennifer Harvey. Daphne has a ton of resources on raising kids to be anti-racist on her website. We talk about trailheads to our protective parts around racism and the parts who try to separate, numb, and disconnect from racism and parts who engage in 'white saviorism.' A list of trailheads is on her website too. -------- Find out more about Daphne here: https://www.daphnefatterphd.com/ Her email is: info@daphnefatterphd.com Find out about the workshop she co-leads here: https://www.daphnefatterphd.com/treating-racial-trauma-series.html More Information about the White Racial Developmental Model by Jennifer Helms here: https://libguides.du.edu/c.php?g=1046908&p=7596766 https://coatescbc.files.wordpress.com/2016/07/helms-white-racial-identity-development-model.pdf She suggests this podcast on Whiteness that is 'too good not to share': https://www.sceneonradio.org/seeing-white/ For more about 'Calling in' check out: https://www.learningforjustice.org/magazine/spring-2019/speaking-up-without-tearing-down --------- I'd love to connect with you @ifs.tammy on Instagram and Twitter and on Facebook at The One Inside Facebook page. IFS and Being with Exiles (and the Demo with Dick!) with Ty Cutner
On today's episode, I chat with Ty Cutner, an IFS Informed Relationship and Image Coach who has a passion for working with men. Ty will be hosting two panels with the Heirloom Summit. You may know Ty from a Demo he did with Dick which is on the Continuity Program in the IFS Diversity and Inclusion workshop. Link to the Demo HERE! If that link does not work try this one :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Al7jnW-Z08w&feature=youtu.be I just want to note how HUGE it is that Dick (and Sara Oberg at the IFS Institute!) allowed us to have access to this link. We talk about the polarizations from the demo and what has happened in his system since then. Ty is vulnerable and his story is painful and beautiful. It is full of hope and motivation. Ty continues to talk about his younger exiles throughout this episode. And, I continue to ASK- I have STRONG mothering parts who WILL NOT UNBLEND. I still notice them as I interact with Ty even now. Ty talks about his experience and lessons learned with an ice bath in Maine. Our internet connection is not the best during this story which is about the first 8 minutes of the episode.... it gets better. Around the 30 minute mark Ty shares his thoughts about racism. At the 40 minutes mark we talk about how Ty is coaching men on their image and shares his own discovery of why image is so important. Ty talks about The Gentlemen's Factory, a social club for men of color where he's a founding member in Brooklyn, NY. Connect with Ty on Instagram and Facebook or on Ty's Image Coach Website I'd love to connect with you @ifs.tammy on Instagram and Twitter and on Facebook at The One Inside Facebook page. Her passion is contagious and my hope is that you will take one of the MANY resources and challenges she gives to 'accept your assignment' while giving ALL of your parts (including your racist parts) compassion and care. IFS and Masculinity and Jericho Circles with Steve Spitzer and Glenn Williams
On today's episode, I chat with Steve Spitzer and Glenn Williams. Steve, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Suffolk University in Boston, has taught, researched, and written on crime, justice and social control for three decades. He is Level 2 IFS trained and has presented his use of the IFS model inside prisons at multiple IFS annual conferences and has written articles in the IFS newsletter, The Outlook. In 2002, he founded the Jericho Circle Project, a non-profit organization that seeks to 'bring down the walls' by creating men's support groups in correctional facilities. Since the project began, almost 1000 incarcerated men have sat in Jericho Circles in county, state, and federal correctional institutions in Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island. Glenn participated in the Jericho groups when he was incarcerated for 21 years and later met Steve in a different context. Glenn now 'pays it forward' with his organization, Our House Boston. Glenn is Level One IFS trained and is passionate about spreading the word about our True Essence, especially to black men in urban settings. Glenn is a reentry advocate and community investor who works with various individuals, families, organizations and businesses to raise awareness about and create solutions to the challenges of incarceration and prisoner reintegration. This conversation is AMAZING. I cannot convey this in words. Here are some themes: 'Self' Discovery Masculinity Men's work inside prisons, power of vulnerability, and speaking for parts 'Climbing out of the man box'/Taking off masks The importance of power in manliness for Black Men Glenn states, "Who I pretend to be (what my community and society says I need to be in order to survive) and my Essence are not the same thing." And, "IFS offers the opportunity for Self Discovery and Self Exploration (inside and outside of prison). Discovering that my shame and guilt are parts of me and do not have to define who I am at my core." To find more about Jericho circle go to https://jerichocircle.org/ Check out this 90 minute documentary on the nature of their group work that was filmed at California State Prison Sacramento. That film, produced by the group that initially mentored them in the work (Inside Circle), will give you a taste of the kind of work done (albeit at a somewhat higher level of intensity than is typical of Jericho Circle’s groups) on their weekends. IFS and Spirituality (and tons of other stuff!) with Frank Anderson
On today's episode, I chat with Dr. Frank Anderson, a superstar in the IFS and Trauma world. You may know him as a lead trainer at the IFS Institute, by his PESI workshops, or as the co-author of the IFS Skills Training Manual. He is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, and I assumed we would talk about meds and neurotransmitters. I was wrong. Frank is personal, engaging, and hilarious. He shares a lot of his own story and is vulnerable and real. I decided to leave in our entire conversation (instead of cutting out some of the beginning bits) because you get a feel for him right from the start. We talk about Spirituality and the integration with Science and Research. We talk about LGBTQ plus, lots about complex trauma, and we touch on parenting and substance use. We talk about psychedelics, mediums, and ascended masters (I had to look that up afterwards). It is a wild ride. IFS and Personal Growth with Jay Earley
On today's episode I chat with Jay Earley, a popular IFS teacher who authored the book, "Self Therapy" and who leads ongoing IFS courses and groups. Our chat can be broken up into 3 sections- 1. His story, and similarities and differences between what he teaches and what Dick teaches. He shares his take on unblending and inner critics. He shares his 'GPS of the mind' program. He states, "I am not competing with IFS." 2. Capacity Development- What are the 'capacities of Self' to be developed and discovered? 3. "The Great Turning"--- "Inner work for the world" Here is the website to ALL the things Jay offers: https://personal-growth-programs.com/ This is the online tool we discussed: https://selftherapyjourney.com/ I would love to hear what you think the 'Capacity' is for the word I am trying to find in the middle of the episode. The word was 'Scarcity,' and I MEANT to ask Jay what he thought the capacity was but got lost in trying to find the word! Let me know if you can help me out on this one @ifs.tammy on Instagram and Twitter and The One Inside Facebook Page. I will see you there. Enjoy!
