#49- Navigating Online School and Coping with Burnout (with Cavelle Simpson)
This week, we are joined by Cavelle Simpson from the Global Mental Health Outreach to talk about her experience with navigating online school and coping with burnout during the pandemic. She shares some of the challenges that she faced with social isolation, academic performance, and making time for her own well-being. Further, we briefly discuss the impact that the pandemic had on athletic performance as she struggled with her own return to sport as well. Cavelle offers some advice and suggestions from her own experience that will hopefully help someone else navigate these stressful times. On a positive note, she also talks about some of the things and events that she is looking forward to (i.e., prom, college applications, etc.) as we return somewhat "back to normal". #48- Trauma Healing and Recovery (with April Haggart)
In this week’s episode, we are joined by Certified Trauma Recovery Coach, April Haggart. Trauma Recovery Coaches “work with trauma survivors as peers, mentors, guides and educators with the goal of helping their clients understand the recovery process, reconnect with themselves and the world while using their strengths to build a life they love living” (International Association of Trauma Recovery Coaching). As a multiple trauma survivor, April shares and uses her own experiences with trauma to raise awareness and to help others along their healing journey. In this conversation, we discuss the evolution of mental health stigma and services, as well as the field of trauma as a whole. As our knowledge and understanding of trauma are increasing, more services and professions are being developed to help treat survivors in progressive, sustainable ways. We also talk about how technology and social media are related to bullying and further, how bullying is connected to trauma. #47- Sleep, Productivity, and Mental Health (with Marie Klamer)
This week, we are joined by a Master's Student in Psychology, Marie Klamer. Marie specializes in sleep, productivity, and habits, and ultimately, teaches people how to use psychology to boost their well-being. In this episode, she educates us on the relationship between sleep and psychology and provides many helpful suggestions about how we can improve our sleep. She talks about our circadian rhythm, caffeine intake, exposure to light, and more! We also discuss productivity and how "hustle culture" is negatively impacting our perceptions of what it really means to be productive. Marie gives advice on how we can both increase and improve our productivity using things like batching tasks and taking proper breaks. She also talks briefly about building effective habits to get the most out of our potential. Overall, we emphasize how interrelated all of these things are with our mental well-being and the importance that they all play in our everyday lives. #44- Getting Out of a Toxic Relationship (with Larissa Joy)
This week, we are joined by Larissa Joy, an online wellness coach, who is sharing her personal story with both being in and getting out of a toxic relationship. In this episode, Larissa talks about what the relationship looked like, what kind of red flags were there, and how difficult it was to navigate the situation. She describes how challenging it can be to view these relationships as "toxic" when you do see small glimpses of love and hope throughout. After finally making the decision to leave her partner, she talks about some of the mental health struggles that she has been facing, including anxiety and PTSD, as well as a burdened mindset. Since beginning her healing journey, Larissa has come a really long way in personal growth, mental/emotional well-being, and advocating by sharing her story. She also provides a great deal of advice for anyone who may be currently in or recovering from a similar situation. First Session is a mental health service designed to help you find the right therapist through the use of meaningful human connection and transparency. Rob talks about the inspiration behind the business, what makes their platform unique, and how they hope to improve the overall accessibility of therapy services. In this episode, we also discuss some of the challenges within our mental health system, including long wait times and unaffordable resources, and how First Session aims to mitigate those obstacles.
