#8- Messages from the media: How to be a woman (with Carlea Blight)
This episode is filled with several interesting topics, but they all centre around the way that women are portrayed in the media. Body image issues, internalized negative thoughts, disordered eating habits, eating disorders, the sexualization of female bodies, rape culture, and many more. Carlea shares her experience with her own eating disorders and identifies the factors that contributed to the onset and progression of her mental illness. Trigger warning: specific thoughts, feelings, and behaviours associated with eating disorders are mentioned in this episode, including dialogue that may be triggering for anyone recovering from related trauma. We discuss how the media has influenced the ways that women are treated in society and has distorted women's perceptions about their own bodies and purpose in this world.
