The Compounding Effect of Creating a Great Experience for Your Team with Kelly Culler
In today’s conversation, host Ryan Dull is joined by Kelly Culler, Senior HR Business Partner & VP of Talent Acquisition at Northwestern Mutual. They talk about the powerful effect that creating a great experience for your team can have on all stakeholders.
More than ever, it is challenging to ensure that all individuals involved in talent acquisition (be they, candidates, hiring managers, or recruiters) have positive experiences. But that’s exactly why it’s important to include stakeholders. Their insights can help to glean data to optimize those experiences.
For Kelly, creating a great experience for all stakeholders is one of the most important aspects of her job. She believes that if employees have a great experience, not only will that lead to higher engagement and retention, but it will also flow into the business and on to customers, vendors, and all constituents.

Implementing Technology Effectively with Britton Bloch of Navy Federal Credit Union
Today’s conversation between host Ryan Dull and Britton Bloch, Vice President of Talent Acquisition Strategy and Head of Recruiting at Navy Federal Credit Union, centers around the balance between technology and people-driven systems.
Technology, and especially newly developed AI systems, have the potential to streamline recruiting processes and make talent acquisition far more efficient and effective. However, as Britton explains, these tools are only useful if they’re implemented into systems that are already functional. Her work at Navy Federal Credit Union has been a journey of using technology as a supplement, not a crutch.
For Britton, technology doesn’t tend to create new structures but instead often exacerbates the functions of the structures that are already in place. A well-oiled machine will become even more effective with the right technology, but chaotic and unrefined processes will only create more chaos when paired with technology. Because of this, Britton is wary of trying to adopt new tech too quickly. She prefers to spend the bulk of her time refining and improving her organization’s processes and then using technology to supplement a system that’s already working well.
As Britton tells it, technology is an enabler of systems, not a creator.

Preparing for the Future with Fang Xu of A+E Networks
On this episode of the Talent Acquisitions Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull is joined by Fang Xu, Head of Talent Acquisition and Head of Diversity at A+E Networks.
The last several years have created massive transformations in what a typical work environment looks like. This, in turn, has changed the way talent managers have had to think about hiring practices and team structure.
Fang has been right in the middle of that transition, beginning her work at A+E Networks from a remote position, and watching her pool of candidates grow as her organization expanded its area of operations because of the new opportunities for remote work.
For Fang, all of these changes are an opportunity for the industry to evolve. Rather than simply adapting to the new normal, Fang thinks talent acquisition leaders should take the pandemic as a lesson in preparing for the unexpected. It’s not just about overcoming current challenges but creating an environment where flexibility and adaptability are themselves the new normal.
To continue to meet the needs of their organization and their team in an ever more volatile market, talent acquisition leaders have to embrace the unexpected.

Watching Workforce Trends with Paul Shane of REV Group, Inc
On this episode of the Talent Acquisitions Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull enjoys a conversation with Paul Shane, Senior Director, Talent Acquisition at REV Group, Inc.
Talent acquisition is not a static industry. To be successful in finding and retaining the right people, Paul has to pay careful attention to shifts in social, economic, and political norms. These changing elements can alter the availability of talent, their effectiveness as a team member, and the ability of an organization to meet that team member’s needs.
The last few years have been an excellent case study in the way these changing trends have forced businesses to reevaluate the way they approach recruitment. While the Covid-19 pandemic caused a radical transformation in such things as work environment and candidate expectations, Paul says that micro-transformations of a similar sort are actually happening all the time.
The key to being an effective talent manager is to be aware of the small changes happening every day and to adapt to them, rather than simply waiting for an industry-shaking catastrophe like Covid-19. Change is always happening, and a good leader attacks that change with their recruiting strategy, rather than waiting for change to attack them.

Leveraging Every Asset with Kerry Karle at DISH Network
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull talks to Kerry Karle, VP, Head of Talent Acquisition at DISH Network, about her holistic view of her organization’s TA assets.
The two most obvious tools at any recruiter’s disposal are their team members and technology. Kerry of course makes efficient use of her team and tech, but she does so by leveraging assets that may not be as obvious.
One such tool that may often go overlooked is team structure. A team can only work to its maximum ability if it's organized in a way that promotes efficiency. A poorly -structured team generates poor work output and Kerry’s staff is only as efficient as the framework she builds for them.
Work culture is a complementary asset that has to be wielded well. Talented team members working in a well-structured way will still underperform if they aren’t in lockstep with the company culture. Seeing how all of these assets work together is a talent in itself and Kerry has cultivated that talent well.
To Kerry, no asset is an island and understanding the way each tool interacts with its counterparts is foundational to being an effective talent acquisitions leader.

Embracing the New Normal with Julie Teague of Danone
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull speaks with Julie Teague, Senior Director and Head of Talent Acquisition at Danone North America, about what talent recruitment looks like in a post-Covid world.
The last two years have brought many profound changes to the way businesses operate. An increase in remote work availability, non-traditional workweeks, and expanded employee benefits all contribute to the formation of new expectations that employees now have of the companies they work for.
These expectations have an enormous impact on the way talent recruitment is conducted. Finding people with the appropriate work environment flexibility, and being willing to be flexible yourself, is a new challenge facing talent acquisition leaders. While some businesses are trying to return to pre-pandemic standards, Julie thinks the future of recruitment is in embracing a new normal.
To her, these challenges are opportunities in disguise to revolutionize the way TA is conducted, creating more effective teams by catering to the new needs of her employees. As companies grapple with the way workplace culture is evolving, Julie thinks success lies in recruiting according to that culture, not dragging culture backward to maintain prior recruiting standards.

Expanding the role of TA with Michael McMillan of Stryker
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull is joined by Michael McMillan, Vice President of Global Talent Acquisitions and Corporate HR at Stryker.
Michael was drawn into talent acquisitions after seeing the impact that one of his first hires had on a client that his company was supporting. That customer-centric focus has stayed with him throughout his career, and he maintains a recruitment philosophy that sees customer experience as the defining mission.
In order to be effective in his role, Michael believes that it’s important to look beyond the walls of his job description and also gain experience in other tangential roles. Understanding the work of his colleagues makes Michael better equipped to find people who are not only good at their jobs, but that can also better support the broader mission of Stryker.
According to Micahel, this holistic approach to talent acquisition is at the heart of his industry. Understanding the unspoken needs of his organization, and the needs of its customers, is essential to becoming an effective talent acquisition leader. That foundational understanding is only gained by seeking out diverse opportunities beyond what is typically expected of talent acquisitions specialists.

Assertive Talent Management with Ashleigh Anderson of Credit Karma
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull speaks with Ashleigh Anderson, Vice President of Global Talent Acquisition for Credit Karma, about the need for talent acquisition specialists to assert their role within businesses.
Ashleigh gained valuable experience in talent acquisition long before coming to Credit Karma. She worked as a recruiter and talent manager for several organizations, including Microsoft, before entering her current role. This rich background taught her the value and importance of the talent acquisition role within any business.
Ashleigh trusts her own expertise and is confident that she knows best when it comes to hiring and managing a team. She isn’t told by her organization how many hires they need, or what kind of people they’re looking for. Instead, she tells them what the needed roles are, and how she intends to fill them.
By being an advocate for her position and her knowledge, Ashleigh has given herself the freedom to organize and build teams in ways that she thinks will be most beneficial. Her success has won her the trust of her colleagues and supervisors, and she continues to champion this assertive approach to talent management.

Rethinking Technology with Mike Ganiere of Northwestern Mutual
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull welcomes Mike Ganiere, Senior Director of Talent Acquisition at Northwestern Mutual.
Like many professionals in the TA industry, Mike started his career outside of recruiting. He worked in sales for companies like Pepsi and Nestle before getting into the talent acquisition space. After a stint at Robert Half, he made the jump to executive search in 2008, which eventually led to his role today at Northwestern Mutual.
There is tremendous growth happening at his company, and Mike and his team have had to make some adjustments in their processes and their thinking. They’ve grown from around 20 people to over 100 in just two years.
This has meant using technology to automate some processes and streamline others. He believes in empowering recruiters with tools that let them use their critical thinking skills to be more of a management consultant and not just a recruiter.
He believes that TA leaders need to be flexible in their thinking as the business demands change. Doing things the way they’ve always been done is no longer an option if you want to survive in today’s unprecedented competitive landscape.

Culture as a Recruitment Tool with Mike Miller of Chipotle
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull speaks with Mike Miller, Director of Talent Acquisition at Chipotle Mexican Grill. They talk about Mike’s storied career and the future of talent recruiting.
Mike stumbled into HR while studying English at UCLA, recruiting for an SAT tutoring company to earn money while at school. From there, Mike’s gregarious personality and passion for people saw him become a successful talent recruiter for Hot Topic, Red Bull, and eventually Chipotle.
Over the course of his impressive career, Mike has often advocated for a new way of thinking in his industry. Gone are the days where recruiters sifted through piles of resumés of eager candidates. In the wake of Covid-19, it is as much about selling the company to the candidate as it is about selling the candidate to the company.
Mike has always sought to build systems that support the staff he hires, and he continuously tries to find ways to encourage their professional development. This, to him, is the future of talent recruitment.
To hire great people, an organization has to become a business worth working for.
