Ep. 72: What Happened In My Marriage When I Stopped Drinking
This is Part 2 of a conversation with my husband about what happened in our marriage once I stopped drinking. To listen to Part 1 of this conversation go to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/71 Mike and I had been together for 18 years before I stopped drinking alcohol. Those years of dating, marrying and becoming parents together were filled with many happy memories of wine tasting weekends, pub crawls, boozy dinner parties and drinking vacations. Of course, not all of the memories of me drinking were positive, and after I stopped drinking certain things in our marriage had to change and evolve while others stayed the same. In this episode, Mike and I talk about our relationship, habits, rituals, parenting and connection to each other since I gave up alcohol and why he doesn’t mind that I’m not as wildly unpredictable as I used to be. We dive into the last five and a half years since I stopped drinking: early sobriety, where we are now, and where we are going. And we talk about why it’s important to separate the sadness we might feel about aging and the fact that we no longer have the same relationship we did when we were 25 years old from feelings of sadness and mourning that came up when I quit drinking. Ep. 71: My Marriage - Drinking and Not Drinking A Conversation With My Husband, Mike
What role does alcohol play in a marriage? And what happens in relationships when one partner decides to stop drinking? So many women worry about the role alcohol plays in their marriage and what might happen if they were to decide to quit drinking. Whether your spouse is your drinking buddy, wants you to stop drinking, doesn’t want you to stop drinking or just doesn’t get it, navigating marriage, parenthood and partnership and your relationship with alcohol is delicate and complicated. In this very special episode, my husband Mike joins me as we talk about what our relationship was like when we were drinking versus our relationship when I stopped drinking and how my decision to go alcohol-free has affected our marriage throughout the years. We get real about the good (and the hard) parts of our marriage over the course of the last 19 years and how we navigated the transition from my drinking life and early sobriety to our new normal where I don’t drink and he still does. Ep. 69: Divorce, Women + Drinking
Many women find themselves turning to alcohol and drinking more during the decline of a marriage, during a separation or once their divorce is final. Why do women drink after a divorce? Divorce can bring to the surface feelings of uncertainty, loneliness, resentment, fear, regret, guilt, anger and shame for many women. These emotions can be difficult to cope with alone and women may turn to a bottle of wine to numb negative feelings. Not only can women feel isolated, but they also might feel the desire to celebrate their newfound freedom and independence by drinking. My guest today, Krysty Krwyko of Your Creative Badass Divorce, is here to share how to turn divorce from a soul-sucking to a soul-defining experience. Krysty helps women heal and recover from divorce, shed the stigma, reinvent themselves and reclaim their lives. Krysty is a life coach, educator, mixed media artist, self proclaimed book nerd and an indie mama of two teens. She uses the pillars of creativity and sobriety in her work with women as they navigate their lives through a creative journey process. Tune in to hear us talk about healthy ways to cope after divorce, what having a creative outlet means for most women, why there's danger in trying to just push through negative emotions, and how Krysty has used her experience to support women navigating the shitty waters of post-divorce life. Sober Travel is all the rage. So how do you take an alcohol-free vacation? If you’re sober curious, in early sobriety or simply want a mindful and relaxing health and wellness break, you are going to love sober travel! The New York Times published an article recently about sober travel going mainstream with wellness and mental health being top motivators for travel and more people ditching the drinks and planning alcohol-free trips. But for many women the prospect of staying sober on vacation can be so daunting that they put off quitting drinking until after their next big trip. Navigating airports, hotel bars and resorts without drinking alcohol seems impossible and unimaginable. But you can stay sober while traveling and have the most relaxing, enjoyable, fun vacation of your life without the booze. Today I’m going to give you the tips and tricks you need to know to take your next sober trip and enjoy an alcohol-free vacation. When you explore the world without the booze, you’ll come back refreshed, relaxed, proud and healthy, without feeling like you need a vacation to recover from your vacation. Plus you’ll find that you get so much more out of your travel when you’re alcohol-free. Ep. 67: Healthy Coping Mechanisms For Stress And How To Model Them For Your Kids
How many of us learned healthy coping mechanisms for managing stress, anxiety or depression when we were kids? If our parents didn’t model for us healthy ways to cope with the normal human emotions of overwhelm, loneliness, resentment, anger or fear, it’s easy to emulate their patterns or buy into the narrative that alcohol will help us take the edge off and relax after a hard day. And if you’re the parent of tweens or teens, asking them to not drink or experiment with drugs, it’s hard to reconcile that message with opening a bottle of wine every night. One of the reasons that kids start using alcohol and drugs is because they don’t know how to manage and cope with their emotions. And in order to help them it’s important for parents to be present in order to model for children how to manage their own emotions. Today I’m talking with Brenda Zane, a Mayo Clinic Certified Health, Wellness Coach and Parent Coach, whose work supports moms of kids with substance use disorder. Her mission is to help moms maintain their health and sanity as they navigate the chaos and fear of having a child who’s misusing drugs or alcohol. We’re talking about how to build healthy coping skills for negative emotions and stressful situations and how to model those coping mechanisms for your children. For full show notes head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/67Support and resources to help you break away from wine mom cultureYou can Drink Less + Live More today with The Sobriety Starter Kit. Ep. 66: Does Alcohol Keep You Playing Small?
For so many of us alcohol keeps us playing small. We love opening a bottle of wine at the end of the day but don’t realize how much of our time, energy, motivation and ability to follow through on our goals is being diminished by our drinking habit. You might have New Year's Resolutions that you somehow never seem to keep, hobbies you’ve always wanted to try or feel like you’re barely keeping your head above water most days. Or maybe you’re a woman who has always been able to achieve whatever you set your mind to in life, except managing your drinking. If you’re a smart, ambitious, high-achieving woman who feels stuck, this episode is for you. My guest today is here to talk about how drinking can sap your energy, confidence and motivation and keep you playing small. And how to start manifesting the big dreams and desires you have for your life. Amanda Kuda is a writer, coach, and educator. She’s a former social drinker and party girl who is now living (and loving) a 100% alcohol-free lifestyle. Amanda’s passionate about teaching other high-achieving women how to navigate the stumbling blocks of going alcohol-free so they can step into a life beyond their wildest dreams and stop playing small. Ep. 65: Wine Mom Culture
I used to be a wine mom. I bought into the idea that moms need to drink to relax and cope with the demands of motherhood.I felt like opening a bottle of wine helped me transition from work to home and made me feel the way I used to before I had kids. I saw wine as my well-deserved reward for getting through the day. Plus, I love being efficient. I felt like “drinking while momming” was a brilliant way to multitask. I could come home from work, cook dinner, hang out with the kids, manage homework, bedtime and respond to work emails, while at the same time get buzzed and check out from life. I thought being a wine mom was fun and rebellious. But when you take a closer look, the wine mom culture is toxic and dangerous. It normalizes, rationalizes and encourages women to drink a highly addictive substance in large quantities on a regular basis. It convinces women that wine is required for every playdate, girl's night, date night and after-work gathering. And if women get to the point that they realize alcohol is making them tired, irritable and depressed, the “mommy needs wine” messages make it really hard to stop drinking. So, let’s talk about the dark side of mom wine culture, how to look at it objectively and ways to shift your mindset so that you no longer believe that alcohol is required to enjoy life. For full show notes, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/65Support and resources to help you break away from wine mom cultureYou can Drink Less + Live More today with The Sobriety Starter Kit. Ep. 63: The Alcohol Detox + Retox Cycle
Do you go through the cycle of trying to detox your body after drinking too much with healthy eating and exercise, only to turn around and retox again with wine, beer, or cocktails? I did that for years. -I’d drink a bottle of wine each night and then go to a 5:30 am workout class. -I’d go running after work and then come home and open a bottle of wine. -I’d log everything I ate during the day (which often was very little (egg white omelette, salad, asparagus + salmon anyone?) and then add in 5 or 6 glasses of wine to finish the day. It’s exhausting. For so many of us, our relationship with alcohol is complicated and complex. We use alcohol as a tool to help us decompress, forget about the day and disconnect from our daily responsibilities. And then the next morning we feel like crap and try to undo all the damage we did the night before. My guest today is Jenn Kautsch, the founder of Sober Sis and she’s here to talk about how women can get out of the alcohol detox and retox cycle. For full show notes, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/63 Connect with CaseyFind out more about Casey and her coaching programs, head over to her website, www.hellosomedaycoaching.comTake a screenshot of your favorite episode, post it on your Instagram and tag me @caseymdavidson and tell me your biggest takeaway!
