Ep. 72: What Happened In My Marriage When I Stopped Drinking

So how do you take an alcohol-free vacation? If you’re sober curious, in early sobriety or simply want a mindful and relaxing health and wellness break, you are going to love sober travel!  The New York Times published an article recently about sober travel going mainstream with wellness and mental health being top motivators for travel and more people ditching the drinks and planning alcohol-free trips.   But for many women the prospect of staying sober on vacation can be so daunting that they put off quitting drinking until after their next big trip.  Navigating airports, hotel bars and resorts without drinking alcohol seems impossible and unimaginable.  But you can stay sober while traveling and have the most relaxing, enjoyable, fun vacation of your life without the booze.  Today I’m going to give you the tips and tricks you need to know to take your next sober trip and enjoy an alcohol-free vacation.  When you explore the world without the booze, you’ll come back refreshed, relaxed, proud and healthy, without feeling like you need a vacation to recover from your vacation.  Plus you’ll find that you get so much more out of your travel when you’re alcohol-free. Ep. 67: Healthy Coping Mechanisms For Stress And How To Model Them For Your Kids

How many of us learned healthy coping mechanisms for managing stress, anxiety or depression when we were kids?  If our parents didn’t model for us healthy ways to cope with the normal human emotions of overwhelm, loneliness, resentment, anger or fear, it’s easy to emulate their patterns or buy into the narrative that alcohol will help us take the edge off and relax after a hard day.  And if you’re the parent of tweens or teens, asking them to not drink or experiment with drugs, it’s hard to reconcile that message with opening a bottle of wine every night.  One of the reasons that kids start using alcohol and drugs is because they don’t know how to manage and cope with their emotions. And in order to help them it’s important for parents to be present in order to model for children how to manage their own emotions.  Today I’m talking with Brenda Zane, a Mayo Clinic Certified Health, Wellness Coach and Parent Coach, whose work supports moms of kids with substance use disorder. Ep. 65: Wine Mom Culture

I used to be a wine mom. I bought into the idea that moms need to drink to relax and cope with the demands of motherhood.I felt like opening a bottle of wine helped me transition from work to home and made me feel the way I used to before I had kids. I saw wine as my well-deserved reward for getting through the day.  Plus, I love being efficient. I felt like “drinking while momming” was a brilliant way to multitask. I could come home from work, cook dinner, hang out with the kids, manage homework, bedtime and respond to work emails, while at the same time get buzzed and check out from life. I thought being a wine mom was fun and rebellious. But when you take a closer look, the wine mom culture is toxic and dangerous. It normalizes, rationalizes and encourages women to drink a highly addictive substance in large quantities on a regular basis. It convinces women that wine is required for every playdate, girl's night, date night and after-work gathering. And if women get to the point that they realize alcohol is making them tired, irritable and depressed, the “mommy needs wine” messages make it really hard to stop drinking. So, let’s talk about the dark side of mom wine culture, how to look at it objectively and ways to shift your mindset so that you no longer believe that alcohol is required to enjoy life.For full show notes, head over to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/65Support and resources to help you break away from wine mom cultureYou can Drink Less + Live More today with The Sobriety Starter Kit.
