The evolution of human society is at a critical moment due to the impact of technology. Advancements in AI are just one aspect of the changes that have been happening for decades. These changes are fundamentally altering our lives, societies, and politics in ways that may not be desirable.
Technology has a profound impact on our character and virtues. Our interactions with technology shape our habits, inclinations, and virtues. The constant pursuit of efficiency and time-saving devices undermines the cultivation of virtues like patience. As technology becomes more seamlessly integrated into our lives, it hinders our ability to exhibit qualities we aspire to, and, in turn, affects our overall well-being.
In today's rapidly changing world, it is crucial to balance contemplation and action. Contemplation allows us to reflect on the assumptions and values underlying our choices and societal systems. However, action is also needed to address the pressing issues we face. Striving for the common good, reconsidering our relationship with technology, and recovering face-to-face interactions are essential for building a healthier society.
The current state of the public sphere, especially on social media, is characterized by fragmentation, animosity, and a lack of meaningful dialogue. To address this, reimagining the public sphere should involve reclaiming face-to-face encounters and fostering genuine connections. Recovering shared spaces where human interactions can take place outside of the attention economy is essential for revitalizing public discourse.
In the podcast, the speaker discusses how the systems of control in today's world use behavioral psychology and advanced technologies to generate desire and control people. They emphasize the need to recognize and understand the impact of these control systems on our lives.
Another key point made in the podcast is the importance of rethinking the central premises of life and questioning what truly matters. The speaker highlights the need to prioritize relationships and meaningful experiences over economic productivity and efficiency. They note that by acknowledging our limits, embracing our humanity, and reconnecting with the non-human world, we can find more fulfillment and satisfaction in our lives.
In Episode 306 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Michael Sacasas. Michael is the executive director of the Christian Study Center in Gainesville Florida and the author of The Convivial Society, a widely read newsletter about technology, culture, and the moral life.
Demetri and Michael discuss how we are engineering society and the human experience in ways that could have irreversible effects on humanity’s future. Many of you may be wondering if this conversation is about A.I. Not necessarily. Advancements in artificial intelligence may very well prove to be the catalysts, but if so then A.I. is just the apotheosis of trends that have been in place for decades if not longer, and which are changing the nature of our lives, our societies, and our politics in ways that are not necessarily desirable. Some of these trends threaten the values and traditions that we associate most strongly with human civilization and the flourishing of the natural world. And many of us feel the urge to “do something” to alter our trajectory, but what is to be done? Besides understanding the nature of these trends and the technological and social structures bringing them about what can we do to effectuate positive change and on what scale we can hope to make a difference? This is the central focus of today’s conversation.
