Deep dives
Yoga vs. Yoga Therapy
Yoga therapy is a subset of the larger practice of yoga. It focuses on using the tools and practices of yoga to support health and well-being in specific ways. While yoga is often seen as a physical practice in the West, it encompasses much more, including mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects. Yoga therapy recognizes the multidimensional nature of our being and addresses all levels in a whole-body approach.
Benefits and Popularity of Yoga
Yoga has gained popularity and momentum in recent years, with an increasing number of practitioners. The physical benefits of yoga, such as improved balance, flexibility, and mobility, make it appealing to a wide range of individuals, including aging adults. But yoga goes beyond the physical, incorporating mindfulness and spiritual aspects. Practicing yoga can have a positive ripple effect, leading to healthier eating habits, increased community involvement, and a more holistic approach to overall well-being.
Yoga as Self-Care and Empowerment
One of the reasons for yoga's growing popularity is its focus on self-care and empowerment. Yoga is a self-directed practice that individuals can do for themselves, with the support of a yoga therapist if desired. It provides individuals with agency over their own health and well-being, which is especially attractive in a world where we often feel limited in our ability to control our lives. Yoga's self-directed nature allows individuals to explore and discover what works for them, making it an empowering practice.
Yoga's Role in Healthcare
Yoga can be a valuable addition to healthcare, working in partnership with other healthcare modalities. It complements chiropractic care, for example, by promoting mobility, flexibility, and stability. Yoga's multi-dimensional approach addressing physical, mental, and emotional aspects of health makes it a versatile tool in integrative healthcare. With its potential to positively impact hormones, reduce inflammation, and affect overall well-being, yoga provides a safe and effective option for healthcare professionals and patients alike, particularly in addressing chronic conditions like low back pain.
On today's episode, we speak with yoga therapist, editorial director and author, Laurie Hyland Robertson, about the benefits of both yoga and yoga therapy as they relate to the whole system.
