The Zepto brothers mentioned that consumption in the middle and lower segments of the market has slowed down in recent quarters. While premiumization is happening at the top end, the middle and lower segments are not actively participating in the consumption cycle.
Tara mentioned that she believes the tastes and preferences of the youth have changed, and they now prioritize relatability in movies over aspiration. She feels that the industry needs to listen more to what people want to see and hear in order to keep up with the changing trends.
Navya discussed the importance of creating a balance in the consumption of arts and academics. She emphasized the need for young people to explore their interests in the arts, as it can help them discover different facets of their personalities and provide a well-rounded education.
The Zepto brothers and Tara expressed their appreciation for music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, as well as classical and semi-classical music. They also mentioned that they enjoy the music of today, which they believe has evolved and offers a wide range of genres and themes.
This generation values good high-quality service at a reasonable cost, rather than associating good service with premium or luxury. They seek good service without compromising their budget.
The current education system needs to focus more on individual learning capacities and provide a more diverse range of subjects and skills, including soft skills and life skills.
To promote entrepreneurship among young people, it is important to emphasize unconventional pathways and success stories, highlight the benefits of entrepreneurship, and provide resources and support for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Addressing income inequality requires a combination of measures, including antitrust laws, equitable tax systems, and facilitating entrepreneurship to create opportunities for wealth creation.
Tara, Navia, and Aditya discuss the challenges of portraying oneself on social media and the importance of staying true to one's authentic self. They acknowledge the pressure to present a confident image while recognizing the dichotomy between online personas and true feelings. They emphasize the need to focus on personal growth and self-improvement rather than seeking validation from social media. They also highlight the significance of surrounding oneself with a supportive network and not giving too much importance to trolling or cancel culture.
Navia shares her optimism for the potential of Generation Z, although she acknowledges the lack of opportunities given to young people. She discusses the importance of including youth voices in decision-making processes to shape a better future. She expresses that entitlement among young people stems from the desire to make their perspectives heard and contribute to solving various issues like gender biases and socioeconomic inequality. Navia encourages open-mindedness to criticism and actively seeks input from different perspectives to foster positive change.
Tara explains her belief that true beauty lies in one's actions and how they impact others. She contrasts society's focus on external appearances with the significance of one's character and deeds. Tara emphasizes the importance of authenticity and vulnerability in personal branding, encouraging individuals to be true to themselves and not conform to societal expectations. She views beauty as a transient concept and promotes the idea that what one does and the impact they create in the world is more meaningful and enduring than external perceptions.
Roughly 60% of the Indian population is under the age of 30 and hence the coolness funnel tends to be top-down. This is the segment that everyone will be building for. The consumption trends and behavioral patterns we hear here from these 4 accomplished people will likely remain relevant over the next decade. We have Navya - who's an unlikely grounded person one usually wouldn't assume, the precocious Zepto Brothers - where what stands out more than everything else is the bond 2 guys who met in the 6th-grade share with each other, and Tara - an outsider who paved her way into the very inside world of Bollywood. The transient nature of younger folks when it comes to housing/transport/ownership/vocation/fashion/shopping and the shorter attention spans are very different to someone like me who spends 8 hours watching a cricket match for example. Biases aside, there is so much to learn here!
