Deep dives
Understanding the Nervous System and Self-Regulation
The nervous system is brilliantly customized to our lived experiences and is not broken. The first step in healing is to cultivate awareness of dysregulation and recognize its effects on our behavior. It's crucial to understand the two dysregulated states: fight or flight (sympathetic) and immobilization (dorsal). Tools for regulation will differ depending on the state of dysregulation. Building flexibility in the nervous system is the goal, where the intensity, duration, and frequency of anxiety and unhelpful behaviors decrease over time. Healing is an ongoing journey and can be supported by reparenting the inner child and taking consistent and compassionate action.
Identifying Dysregulation and Practicing Self-Compassion
Recognizing dysregulation is key to breaking unhelpful patterns. Developing awareness helps separate ourselves from the dysregulated state, allowing us to take control. Repetition of dysregulated behaviors can be curbed with self-compassion and self-acceptance. Mistakes and repeated patterns do not mean there's something wrong. Regaining control requires identifying dysregulation and implementing gradual tools to shift our state. Awareness helps break the cycle and reframe our perception of the situation. Taking a breath, grounding ourselves, and focusing on self-soothing techniques can support the regulation of the nervous system.
The Journey of Healing and Cultivating Flexibility
Healing and regulation isn't about achieving a constant state of perfect regulation but rather building flexibility in the nervous system. Over time, patterns of dysregulation can change, leading to decreased intensity, duration, and frequency of anxiety and unhelpful behaviors. It's important to understand that the journey of healing is ongoing and gradual. Reparenting the inner child and consistently taking action plays a profound role in the healing process. By showing compassion to our inner child, we can address the underlying causes of dysregulation and support our growth and self-trust.
Release Anxiety through Physical Discharge
Anxiety is energy that needs to be physically discharged from the body. This can be achieved by engaging in activities that move the energy out, such as dancing, jumping, going for a walk, or doing breathwork. Animals instinctively shake their bodies to release energy after a threat, and humans can do the same. Meditation may not always be effective during anxiety, as it works best when we are already regulated. The key is to find safe ways to physically move the energy out and not rely on intellectualizing or thinking our way out of it.
Building Self-regulation and Trust
Emotional triggers often stem from childhood experiences and can impact our relationships and self-regulation. To heal and regulate our nervous systems, we need to develop a deep sense of self-trust and compassion. Building a relationship with our inner child is crucial, showing love and understanding to the wounded and protective parts of ourselves. By identifying triggers and understanding the underlying narratives, we can unburden ourselves from past trauma. Self-compassion and self-acceptance are vital in this healing process, allowing us to develop emotional maturity and establish healthy boundaries in our relationships.
