RHP#016. Melissa Monte, Hostess of the Mind Love Podcast

Gadget Girl. Conqueror. Podcast Hostess. Fighter. Veracious Orator. Victim. Infectious laugher. Bright and Bubbly. Free spirit. Mindlove Expert. The story of our guest this week is like the story you read in a book which you find on the top row of the fiction section in a bookstore. We explore life events of an elaborate magnitude which you really couldn’t make up. Melissa Monte, is a lady who has suffered more traumatic experiences than most people. In this conversation we get raw and into the nitty gritty of certain events which have unfolded in her life. When you hear some of these stories, you may find yourself slightly disconcerted. Life began in East Bay, Northern California. Melissa was the quintessential girl, the next door type which you see in the movies. Her childhood was happy and fulfilling and she speaks fondly of her parents and her grandparents who all had big impressions on her while growing up. Tough times struck when she was about 15 years old and life started dealing her with some unfortunate and sad circumstances. Being sexually assaulted, your dad passing away and a good friend committing suicide were tragic events which all occurred in quick succession. As a result, she developed an eating disorder, bulimia, which was something that she had to painfully hide for many years. Fortunately there is also a catalyst for turning things around and for Melissa it was when she picked up a book called ‘The Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz’. She managed to find comfort in the book and begin her journey back to self love and acceptance. In the podcast we roam through many other topics, road tripping across America, couchsurfing, positive mindset, being vegan, eating disorders, genetic testing, a sociopathic boyfriend, doing time in prison and her awesome new podcast - The Mindlove Podcast. Melissa is an open book and through telling her story with so much openness and honesty, she has managed to heal herself, as well as help others open dialogue on similar issues which they are facing too. On some sort of level, the best medicine, is often just communicating and talking about things because deep down our human spirit craves acceptance for our slight flaws. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#015. Shaun Fuchs, ex- School Principal. Educationalist and Entrepreneur

Educationalist. Orator. Eternal Optimist. Mentor. Powerlifter. Entrepreneur. Coach. Man of the People. World Traveller. Mr Fuchs one of life’s great humans. It goes without saying that the role and responsibility of a teacher, of any sorts, is of great importance. Yet, it’s an unfortunate circumstance of being a school teacher, that in most cases, you will most likely never end up seeing what your ‘finished product’ is. One of the reasons that we started the podcast, is that we recognise that human relationships are one of the most important things to us personally. Our guest on this week’s show, Shaun Fuchs, is a long-time friend and past school teacher of Gareth’s. Shaun is not your average human and he does not fit into any stereotype whatsoever. He has certainly had a very colourful life, full of adventure, controversy, learning and success. His honesty, openness and stories are what makes this chat so intriguing. You’ll laugh, cringe, and be in disbelief. More importantly, you’ll educated and inspired too. He grew up on a smallholding in North Riding, Johannesburg, and speaks fondly of growing up with his parents and three siblings. From a young age, he cultivated the skills of negotiation. While his older brother would bring him along as back-up for fisty cuffs, he would often find a way to discuss and negotiate their way out of fights. After his tertiary studies at WITS University, he attended the army in South Africa to complete his compulsory conscription service. It was there that his passion for powerlifting emerged, where he to attained his provincial colours as well as losing two of his fingers…!! Shaun grew up in the South Africa, in an era when apartheid was still widespread and prevalent. His parents and his friends parents, were people who fought in World War II. Those conversations and times were one of the reasons he took such a keen interest in history and politics. Together with his husband, Gordon, they started their first business together, a school tour travel company. It has allowed them to show the world to 1,000‘s of young students as well as providing themselves with the opportunity to explore the world. In his spare time, Shaun loves to escape to his humble abode in Pringle Bay, with Gordon and their dogs. Long walks on the beach, cooking great food, being with close friends, having good conversations and a nice big glass of red wine are where and how he finds his solace. It’s beautiful to hear what a positive and profound impact he has had on so many lives. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#014. Erik Kruger, Founder of Betterman Group. Executive and Mindset Coach

Personal Development Coach. Professional Speaker. Founder of BetterMan. Life Strategist. Writer. Mindset Coach. Digital Marketer. Accreationist.   There are lots of people in this world that say they are going to do things and then there are those people who actually do things. Our guest this week, Erik Kruger, is one of those fine humans who walks the talk.    Self-improvement and self-development are things we all strive for in our own way. At times, they can seem quite complex. For Erik, there have been many side projects along the way, which never gained much traction. It’s not until he decided to be a ‘Better man’ himself, that he found his true calling in life. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, his younger years were spent traversing the country as his Dad was posted to various different towns for work. From a fairly early age, Erik’s leadership skills were obvious as he was selected as Deputy Head Boy in Primary school and then Head Boy in High school. During Erik’s early career as a Physiotherapist he learnt two important things - he didn’t want to be a physio his whole life and that he really enjoyed helping people and saw how they prospered with his guidance. He is clearly a curious and inquisitive human and roughly 7 years ago his journey of self discovery commenced. Through the trials and tribulations of “shiny object syndrome” the idea of ‘Betterman’ was born and these days it is a thriving community of more than 17,000 members. In the Podcast we cover many topics, with an overarching theme of personal development. We hear about the importance of taking long and short breaks, journaling, living a principled life, why digital marketing beats organic growth, mindset, simplification of goal setting, online communities, effective time management and many other things too.   We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Her passion in life is to travel and experience as much as she possibly can in this world. So far, she has exceeded most people’s wildest dreams in terms of travel experiences and adventures. Education is etched in her heart and one of the reasons why she decided to start travelling the world, was to further educate herself by getting immersed in other cultures and surroundings. In the podcast, we hear about and discuss, lessons learnt growing up on a farm, saving and budgeting for travel, epic...and we mean EPIC adventures, sacrifices made to live the life you want, expense pie-charts, travel safety, creating a highly successful online business, Ashlyn’s exciting future and so much more. She is a sassy, smart and confident lady, who is currently trailblazing her way to creating the life she so desires. RHP#012. Christmas Chat. Craig Haywood and Gareth Martin

Festive and Season Greetings from your podcast hosts, Craig and Gareth! We hope everyone has had a merry xmas with lots of fun, laughter and good times, while connecting with the other ridiculously awesome humans in your life! This is our Christmas episode, which is just us having a chat with each other, discussing our experience of the Podcast so far! For both of us this journey has been absolutely epic. It’s quite surreal, in a way to be sitting here, 12 episodes in, 3 months later. It’s cool to think that it all started as a fun idea while chatting in a bar, in Madrid, two years ago! We have been really humbled by the amazing people who have agreed to be guests on the podcast this year. Absolutely every single one of them has been a superstar in their own right and provided so much value to ourselves, our listeners and to help us get the podcast up and running. Words cannot express our thanks and gratitude enough for their time and input. There have been many great lessons for us. We’ve learnt so much from a technical perspective in terms of how to set-up a podcast. Our guests have made us both reflect on our own lives with things we can add to make us better humans. Our listeners have been instrumental with their feedback to help us refine many aspects of the podcast, as well as rating and reviewing the podcast online. Feedback is our energy and we have been so surprised at the impact some of these conversations have had on our listeners. Each message we receive validates why we are doing the podcast. The openness of our guests and their storytelling has provided so much motivation and inspiration. For us, this journey is just the start and we are more motivated and amped about the future than ever! We cannot wait to take the podcast to the next level and have exciting and bold plans in 2018. Thank you for giving us your time and for making this a dream come true. RHP#011. Dr Alex Hynes, Emergency Veterinarian Surgeon and Business Woman

Veterinarian Physician. Loving Mom. Humanitarian. Influencer. Business woman. Conservationist. Smiler. It’s fair to say, Alex is Superwoman. Today we hear why. With Christmas less than a week away, it’s worth taking a moment to be thankful for people like our next guest who provide emergency support for our animals and pets. On Boxing Day alone, they will see up to 100 patients in her hospital. For Dr Alex Hynes, a Veterinarian, it is “part of her life and she would have it no other way”. Dr Alex is a true Aussie who resides in Queensland, Australia. She spent her childhood, growing up between Australia and the UK. For a young, shy and timid girl these nomadic moves at such influential ages proved, at times, to be unsettling and challenging. Growing up on farms and helping her mom care, rear and look after their menagerie made her grow an affinity for animals and also influenced her to pursue a career as a Vet. Besides the educational aspect of this podcast episode, we admire Alex for the work she does as an emergency vet. Be prepared to hear about removing pins from a dogs stomach, taking stones out of a fish’s mouth, a dog with 3rd degree burns and many other stories like that. Life as a Vet is a stressful and highly emotional occupation as you can well imagine. Working 16 hour shifts is the norm, which is why Alex finds solace and detachment through her exercise, her family and her close support network.   As if all she does is not enough, her caring and philanthropic ways extend to the conservation of the environment of the Great Barrier Reef and raising money to build schools and medical facilities for school children and families in Nepal.   The adventures of Alex seem to only be starting and next year we going to find her as a TV personality on the much acclaimed and loved Series of Bondi Vet in Australia, where they will be behind the scenes filming her and her team at the clinic. There is so much more in the fine details of this Podcast that we have no doubt you will enjoy, be educated on and be fascinated by! A big shout out and thank you to Dr Alex for all her time and making this such a fun and enjoyable chat. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#010. Sean Roberts, Ex-Professional Football Goalkeeper and Player Agent

Ex-professional footballer. Jokester. Role model. Player agent. Loving husband. Nature lover. Sean bares all. Sit back and hear his story. From afar, the world of being a professional football player does indeed look glamorous. In many ways it certainly is, however, it’s what we don’t see where the conundrum and anomalies lie. For many young boys it is their dream to play a professional sport of some sort. The amount of dives by young boys into thin air, imagining they are saving a penalty in the World Cup Final is innumerable. The truth is that it takes a special type of person to follow through with this journey. Sean grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa and started his career as a goalkeeper at Panorama Soccer Club at 5 years old. Turning professional at 15 years old involves a lot of sacrifice however Sean also recalls it as some of the best times in his life. After relocating to the UK and after his 7th trial at different clubs, many others may have thrown the towel in but he eventually got the nod and call up to sign his first contract with Crystal Palace. We hear about his career which involved many highs and lows, various clubs, different countries and continents. These were all a culmination of learning curves and experience to help Sean understand what his ‘second skill’ was when he eventually retired from professional sport. In the Podcast we cover many interesting subjects such as transitioning from professional sport to real life, the glamour of football, training routines, reserve leagues, understanding who your mates really are, injuries, player agents, finances, travel and finding love. Sean these days can be found in Sea Point, Cape Town, where he is working as a player agent providing advice and support for players when ‘real life’ really begins We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#009. Mbulelo Thinta. Ultra-trail Runner, Interlocutor and Host of Bleachers

Interlocutor. Maverick. Man of nature. Dynamic Human. Emcee. Humanitarian. Ultra Trail Runner. Brother. Umbe is of a fine breed. Today he tells us his powerful story Growing up as a black man in South Africa with an ‘adopted’ white family and having a mom who goes to work as a nurse in Saudi Arabia, are not normal occurrences but then this is no ordinary man or story. Our guest oozes with undeniable optimism and hope for the future and as he tells us “The future is not a place we are going, it’s a place we are creating” Meet Mbulelo Thinta or ‘Umbe’ as he is more affectionately known. It’s not that often in life you get to enjoy the company and meet characters like Umbe who speak so openly, honestly and articulately about themselves and their story. From a small town in South Africa called Ogies, near Witbank, his early years are remembered with great love. Even though his rebellious ways begin when he is a young man, sport helps to define, protect and endorse him. A taste for alcohol at 19 leads to creating a self-inflicted negative environment around himself, ultimately manifesting itself into destructive and deceptive behaviour. A catalyst to him turning his life and relationships around begin when a lady explains to him that “A mother is only happy as her unhappiest child”. The topics in the Podcast are a melting-pot and cover things such as apartheid, biochemistry, genetics, the importance of daily routines, philosophy, ultra-trail running, the truth about racism, movement, mindset, humanity and the bright future we all face These days you'll find Umbe running up mountains daily, managing and starting new businesses, studying genetics and biochemistry, emceeing at race finish lines and creating hope for current and future generations. RHP#008. Jessie Mundell. Chief Mamma Trainer at JMG Fitness. Prenatal and Postnatal Expert

Fit Mom. Educator. Myth Debunker. Prenatal and Postnatal Expert. Gymnast and Lifter. Online coach and influencer. Jessie is a downright fountain of knowledge. Mostly she is an awesome human Jessie Mundell - is an amazing lady providing so much value, support, care and advice to ladies out there during their pre or postnatal phase of motherhood. With such a big case of misinformation out there, Jessie has stowed it upon herself to develop programs and offer advice which sets the record straight. The reality of pregnancy and birth is that it can be a stressful time and causes profound changes on a woman’s body which sometimes cause months or years of discomfort if not given the right advice or treatment. We were so pleased and grateful to get such a big chunk of Jessie’s time, especially on a Friday evening! She certainly is not one to shy away from hard work and makes the most of her ‘free time’ as a mom to run her business in the early and later hours of the day! Jessie is a salt of the earth type of person who spent most of her early life in the beautiful surroundings of Ontario, Canada. From a young age she was a competitive gymnast and it’s an interesting materialisation when you look at how her life, motherhood and career has panned out with gymnastics being a major influence at the centre of it all.   In the Podcast we get into descriptive and technical detail specifically around how particular training can have a detrimental impact when women are trying to conceive. However the great news is that everything is reversible and it’s often much more simple than you may think. We cover terminology and conditions such as abdominal separation, diastasis recti, incontinence, pelvic floor and linea alba among many others. She also debunks a lot of training myths and explains how and why a healthy weightlifting regime is just what mother’s need. RHP#007. Eva Claire Marseille. Boeing 747 Pilot and First Officer. Fly with Eva

Pilot. Bookworm. Role model. Social media celebrity. Inspiration to many. Kind, funny and down to earth lady. Eva prompts us to chase our dreams and never give up. Eva Claire Marseille - is such an inspirational lady who has always had a vision of what her perfect day looks like. Her passion, hard work, kindness and perseverance are such powerful traits which we can all learn so much from. Eva grew up in a small town called Haarlem in the Netherlands. She was a self-confessed introvert and bookworm in her early years, absorbing as much dutch literature as she could. A visit to a flying school is the turning point which pivots her studies and career path from journalism to becoming a pilot It really was a huge privilege for us to get so much time with Eva and for her to speak so openly and honestly about her life and what’s makes her the inspirational lady she is today. In the Podcast we cover many interesting things you may wonder about when you think about the lavish lifestyle of pilots. It turns out you may be quite surprised! We were sad to hear about the gender discrimination which still exists in the industry too but how that never stopped her chasing her dream for one split second She now finds herself as a role model and inspiration for many women around the world in all aspects of life. No doubt a role model for many men in life too! Her message is eloquent and simple. If you want something badly enough, you work for it, you work more, you work even more, you never give up, you keep yourself relevant and you keep your dream alive because one day that door is going to open and you will be waiting and ready to take it with both hands and give it your absolute best shot when it comes along! This chat is fun, intriguing, educational and so much more. We are truly grateful to bring you such an inspirational lady. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.
