The Ridiculously Human Podcast
Gareth Martin speaking to inspiring humans
None of us were put on this planet to be a watered down version of ourselves.
In a world where it can seem that people are anti-human and wanting to become cyborg transhumans, this podcast is here to let you know that it’s perfectly ok to be a cool, fun-loving, caring and kind HUMAN!
My desire, through the art of storytelling and story listening, is to share a captivating narrative that traverses everything it means to be human. Not just any human…Ridiculously Human!

RHP#026. Shanan Worrall, Founder of Shark Eyes and Big Wave Surfer
Founder of Shark Eyes. Big Wave Surfer. Hero. Abalone Fisherman. Free Diver. Teacher. Dad. Adrenaline Junkie. Perfect Wave Chaser. Shark Attack Rescuer. Legend Human. The ocean is home to many things, two things in particular which we will always be intrigued and awed by, sharks and big waves. There are surfers who spend their lives chasing and searching for that ultimate ride. There are also many people who, on a daily basis put their lives at risk, purely by performing their professions when venturing into the ocean. Our guest this week, Shanan Worrall, is a man who his whole life, has been a ‘water baby’. An extreme water baby! Shanan, grew up in a small town called Esperance in Western Australia, with his parents and 4 siblings. From a very early age he learnt his trade of fishing for abalone and riding big waves in his backyard, the great Indian Ocean. These days, Shanan is the founder of Shark Eyes, a product created as a non-invasive and natural shark deterrent. When Shanan starts explaining the science around the product, you start nodding your head because it makes so much sense. The beauty of his product lies in its effectiveness and simplicity. Losing his brother and having a couple of near death experiences himself, serve as reminders to make the most of life. He knows that life can be taken in an instant. While on a 6 week fishing trip, hours away from any form of civilisation, his friend was attacked by a Great White Shark. He was attacked head first and was up to his torso in the shark's mouth. Miraculously he got loose, but was badly scathed and fortunately survived after being rescued by Shanan. Shanan was shaken up and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), wasn’t able to enter the water for over a year and also had to change careers. On the flip side, Shanan is an epic surfer….like bodacious! He is one of those guys who you see on the surfer videos catching those ginormous waves in the crazy barrels. Shanan has in fact won a prestigious award for the best tube of the year in 2017!! Shanan is such a kind and sincere guy. Now that he is older with a few years under his belt, he spends a lot of his time teaching youngsters of the risks involved with a life on and in the ocean. This conversation is filled with many real-life captivating stories. We also cover interesting topics such as, surfing etiquette, territorial surfing (the good and bad), free diving, apnea and C02 levels, mammalian dive reflex (MDR), breathing and mindset, how to manage stressful situations, shark protection, and animal mimicry. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Shanan Worrall to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#025. Dianne McGrath. PhD Researcher and Mars One Astronaut Candidate
Professional Speaker. Experimentalist. PhD Researcher. Community Leader. TEDx Speaker. Sustainability Expert. Boundary Pusher. Twin. Scientist. Biohacker. Mars One Candidate. Once habitation pods are built, four settlers of two men and two women, will land on the planet in 2031 to act as construction crew. Two years later, another group of four will arrive. The colony will have 24 people until eventually they embark on population building, and await more settlers….ladies and gentlemen we bring you, The Mars One Program. How big of a day dreamer are you…? Do you ever think of what else is out there in the billions of other galaxies which we are a part of? Not too long ago, if you had mentioned that humans would start colonising other planets, you would have received a very very strange look and probably told to keep your thoughts to yourself ;) It takes big thinkers, explorers, trenovators and other curious minds, to help us open our own minds, to the world of opportunities out there. Our guest this week is an exceptionally curious lady with a number of amazing stories and experiments to share with us. Dianne McGrath, is certainly somebody who is on a mission and that mission is to visit MARS! She is 1 of 100 people who have been shortlisted out of 200,000 applicants, to be in the running to colonise Mars. Mars is a little hop, skip and jump of 54.6 million kilometres away. Dianne lived an exploratory and fulfilling childhood, while growing up in the Australian outback. She is a twin and one of 4 kids. Her experiences there had a profound impact on the person she is today. She has always been someone to lend herself to the community and researching ways for us to better exist and co-exist as a human species. She is also an avid environmentalist and teacher of sustainable living. She manages many networks who provide support and relief for communities, by teaching them how to grow and cultivate food. She certainly enjoys experimenting and has in recent years, lived without buying plastic for a whole year, eaten only food waste for a week and is soon partaking in cryotherapy treatment twice a day for 10 days, while measuring her immune function and biomarkers. Sit back and listen in awe when she tells us about the harsh environment on Mars. The crazy windstorms which engulf the entire planet, the mountainous regions, the deep caves and the abundance of tiny red dust particles. In this conversation there are many topics visited, the importance of sleep monitoring, Heart Rate Variability (HRV), the benefits of getting out in nature, respecting where your food comes from, homeschooling, experimentation, sustainability, waste, food production and of course The Mars One Program. Curious minds are a beautiful thing and this lady is going to naturally entice you to try new things and be a better version of yourself. Dear Dianne, we are fully rooting for you and have full faith and trust in you as a Ridiculously amazing Human to go and terraform Mars for us. There are a million more questions we wanted to ask Dianne about Mars and her other feats, but that will have to wait for Part 2 of our conversation at some stage in the future!! RHP#024. Dr Thandi Ndlovu, CEO Motheo Group and Freedom Fighter
Freedom Fighter. Mother Figure. CEO. Doctor. Women Empowerer. Political Activist. Exiled. Philanthropist. Entrepreneur. Thought Leader. Dr T. Sometimes it’s worth reflecting on what you have achieved and experienced in life. History has a strange way of repeating itself and it’s those who are aware of it, who will progressively move forward by learning from previous mistakes. Our guest this week, Dr Thandi Ndlovu, is the epitome of somebody who has put other people’s lives before hers. From a young age, she was a mother figure and would take women under her wing and offer safety and guidance. These traits came very naturally to her. Dr Thandi, is one of the most remarkable ladies you will ever meet, her story is truly incredible and dynamic, especially when we start to unpack the events of her life. She was born and raised in Soweto, South Africa. She grew up as the middle child of 5 kids, in a loving and nurturing household. She was always an avid reader and scholar. Dr Thandi, was subject to one of the most inhumane periods of our times, Apartheid in South Africa. On the 16th June, 1976 there were events which occurred in South Africa which will never be forgotten. What started as a peaceful demonstration of students marching for their educational rights, ended up in barbaric bloodshed during the Soweto Uprising. Dr Thandi’s brother, Hastings, was one of those fatalities. In her struggle for freedom she went into exile and wasn’t to return to South Africa for another 14 years. This liberation movement needed to expose what was really going on in South Africa, with the hope of one day returning to her beloved country, as a totally free person in a democracy. Most of her exile was spent in Zambia but she was also stationed in Mozambique, Angola, Tanzania and the USSR. She trained up in Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), which was the ANC military wing. Part of her training was also in the USSR, where she was sent for a year to attend Communistic and Socialistic school. During her time in Zambia, she studied medicine and graduated as Doctor. It was in her last year, when she got the news that the ban had been lifted and people in exile were allowed to move back. This conversation is teeming with stories like, growing up in Soweto, meals of chicken feet and pork knuckles, street games, the suppression of black people’s rights, walking across country borders into exile, the disgraceful act of bantu education, communist training in the USSR, and how the ANC was run while in exile. These days, Dr Thandi or Dr T, as she is more affectionately known by her employees, is the CEO of a multi-billion Rand (South African Currency) construction business, whose primary focus is developing low cost housing. She also runs the Dr Thandi Ndlovu Children’s Foundation. The story above ended in 1991. Part 2 and the rest of Dr Thandi’s journey and story is coming in a few weeks. We hope you enjoy Part 1 of this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Dr Thandi Ndlovu to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#023. Erin Bailey, Founder of E-Bailey Fitness and Consulting. Viral Blogger
Role Model. Boss Lady. Woman Leader. Viral Blog Poster. Fitness Teacher. Digital Marketer. Brand Ambassador. Fitness Model. Humble Human. So there you are typing away furiously about a topic you feel so passionately about because of it how it has impacted your life. Not someone to write such punchy blog posts, you sit on it for a few hours before sending. You post and share on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Low and behold, you wake up and the article has over 25,000 views. Our guest this week, Erin Bailey, is one of the nicest ladies you will speak to. She originates from the south of the U.S in Asheville, North Carolina. Her parents are both trained social workers, who met while working for a non-profit organisation. Erin speaks fondly of always being surrounded by other kids less fortunate than herself, through the organisation - Big Brothers, Big Sisters. The sense of community and generosity was instilled in her from a young age. At 20 years old, she went off to explore the UK and South Africa on an exchange student program. Both of these places had profound impacts on her and she still treasures the friends, the memories and the life skills she gained in those countries. Erin was always into fitness and and found her ‘jam’ teaching group fitness classes. She also started documenting her journey through blogging. Erin is a smart and attractive girl, she is also a lady with strong beliefs and high morals. Like many ladies, she was unfortunately akin to verbal harassment from male passersby, while out exercising. In the space of a week her viral blog article was shared over 100,000 times and seen by over 1 million people. As a result, she has met many great people who have influenced her life and helped mentor, guide and encourage her to think bigger and bolder. She is now blossoming more than ever. Her self-belief is evident and her ability to convey her message and inspire other women is clear in her actions. That blog was almost not posted. As Erin says “What you say matters, you think you have such a little voice but you don’t know who’s reading, you don’t know who’s out there. You have an impact. Use your voice, use your impact!” We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#022. The Merrymaker Sisters, Emma & Carla Papas. Bloggers and Merry Makers
MerryMakers. Bliss Followers. Yoga and Pilates Instructors. Life Chasers. Energy Babes. Savvy Business Women. Truth Talkers. Sisters. Podcasters. Health Advocates. Many of us, spend so much time these days chasing the next big thing and some form of notoriety. This also means that we lose out and don’t actually have the time or space to focus on what we are actually here for…..to experience and live life to the full! Our guests this week are no ordinary humans and definitely no ordinary ladies, they are big time merry makers! More specifically, they are, The Merrymaker Sisters. These sisters certainly are best friends and have been all their lives. Carla and Emma, grew up in the Australian capital, Canberra. They enjoyed a very happy childhood and feel like they won the parent lottery when they were born!! They have pretty much always worked together, from making sandwiches to their government desk jobs. Between them, while growing up, they were subjected to bullying and suffered from bulimia and orthorexia - which is an obsession with eating foods that someone considers healthy. They were also accustomed to the perceived way of living healthily, which at the time meant counting calories, trying fad diets, eating too little and exercising excessively. As a result, they suffered from low self-esteem and body confidence issues. 2012 was a big shift in their lives when somebody told them about an article discussing the real-food way of eating. With sharing their stories and recipes online, they found their bliss and realised there was more to life for them. So they started their blog….and two years later both wrote the same resignation letter and quit their jobs! In the conversation, we spend a lot of time discussing the psychology around eating disorders, body image, body confidence issues and the importance of having an open dialogue to talk about these things. Carla and Emma, certainly opened up to us with the traumas they faced growing up. More importantly, they also offer sound and quality advice, together with a set of tools which helped them to overcome their struggles. These days, they help over 1.5m people each year to be happier and healthier, through their blog, website, app and social media pages. These girls are flying and deserve every single bit of success which comes their way. We all have a lot to learn and absorb from their energetic and fun way of being. These are special girls and this is a special chat. We hope you enjoy and assimilate the good vibes and valuable lessons. RHP#021. Joe Cross, Founder of Reboot with Joe. Joe the Juicer. Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead
Juicer. Normal bloke. Author. Filmmaker. Wellness advocate. Netflix Star. Rebooter. Entrepreneur. Educator. Realist. Aussie. Smiler. It’s amazing what we will put our bodies through before it is almost too late. Our guest this week always had a good, positive outlook on life but the stresses of it got in the way too. Joe Cross, just sees himself as a normal bloke trying to do his best! It’s this attitude and approach to life, which make people gravitate towards him. Joe is a seasoned campaigner when it comes to giving talks these days. He is the guy behind the wildly successful documentary called Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead which first aired on Netflix in 2010 and has been seen by more than 20 million people. Joe, was born in Sydney, Australia. His parents moved around a lot when he was young, which made it hard for him to settle. It taught him to wisen up quickly, but then it also meant he succumbed to being bullied a lot too. His saving grace and comfort was sugar, he loved his cereal and even more if it was topped with 5 or 6 heaped tablespoons of sugar! Joe learnt, discipline and finance from his Grandad when they would place bet’s on the ‘ponies’. At 17, without the required grades to enter University, he started his employment as a Telex Operator and quickly become a trader on the Sydney Futures Exchange. It’s not until he started his own business, 10 years later, when his health started to decline. Fast forward to 2005 and Joe weighed an astonishing 140kg’s or 310 pounds! During much of this time, he suffered from a condition termed, chronic autoimmune urticaria and was on numerous doses of antibiotics to help him literally just function from day to day. Desperate and 40, he embarked on his 3,000 mile, 60 day juice and transformation journey across the USA, with a team to help film and support him. These days, Joe maintains a healthy weight, is off all the medication and free of his autoimmune disease. He eats a mostly plant based diet and is now educating our kids by teaching them how to cook recipes, using ingredients they have grown and nurtured themselves. In the Podcast, we discuss the impact he has had on society, filmmaking, medical conditions, happiness, building a career, disease, A-Z in health and wellness and his plans for making the world a better place in the future. He has changed so many people’s lives for the better and we think that this chat will add a few more to the list. We hope you enjoy this conversation and learn as much as we did. RHP#020. Christie Lindor, Management Consultant. Author and Hostess of Mece Muse
Reformed Perfectionist. Author. Podcast Hostess. Recovering Workaholic. Coffee Junkie. Management Consultant. Writer. Speaker. Mentor. Laughing Connoisseur. Do you ever stop to think about America as a country and what a marketing machine it has been, in say the last 100 years or so? Everybody outside of America knows about the US-of-A, but a large majority of people in ‘Merica’ are unaware of what goes on in the outside world. Luckily, technology is expanding our thoughts, making us more connected and exposing us to other people’s lives, how they live and where they come from. Our guest this week, is a first generation immigrant. Christie Lindor, born in Boston, Massachusetts, to her Haitian parents. She grew up with her 7 sibling’s, 6 brother’s and 1 sister! Growing up in such a large house was like living in a community centre. For Christie, being an introvert, it was quite a crazy childhood but looking back on it now, it was a magical one. Growing up with not much money, being an introvert and living in a community with interracial racism, left her feeling more ostracised than most people. In life, there are often trigger points which are catalysts to push us to improve ourselves. For Christie, landing her first job as a teenager, gave her some money which allowed her to start buying things so she could establish her own identity. Never one to shy away from hard work, she joined a community college to improve her grades to achieve the levels required to get into university and hopefully, a scholarship of some sorts. Through her tenacity and strategising, she managed to land the job of her dreams as a management consultant. Something she never imagined possible while growing up. Things eventually took their toll and the stress of travelling 250 day’s a year together with the sad events of 3 death’s in her family, caused Christie to revert back into her shell and find solace in alcohol. In the Podcast we discuss, American politics, unspoken crimes, the importance of community, Seth Godin’s alt-MBA, her book and Podcast, advice to young consultants, how to publish a book and what 9/11 meant for her. This is a lady, determined to teach and help others as well as leave a positive and lasting legacy. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#019. Natasha Fett, Celebrity Personal Trainer. Fitness and Lifestyle Development
Celebrity Trainer. Twin. Mom of Twins. Raw Food Chef. Vegan. Transformation Expert. Author. Country Music Lover. TV Producer. Loving Wife. To get guests on our show, we follow a simple strategy of following, interacting and then emailing about 20-40 potential guests each week. In a way, this week’s conversation is kind of serendipitous, which ties in quite nicely with how our guest’s career eventually took off. Imagine, your whole life you enjoy listening to the music of a famous singer and then one day, while you are working out in the gym, he happens to be there and stops by for a chat…!! Our guest this week, Natasha Fett, is a lady who has lived a vivid life with many fortuitous moments. Saying that, we deeply believe that things, such as luck and chance encounters, are created and earned. Natasha, grew up in Hamburg, Germany, with her mom and twin brother. She was young when she lost her Dad tragically in a car accident. As a youngster, she was always athletic and competed in track and field at school. While working as a physical therapist for the Hamburg Football Team, she developed an interest in food and nutrition. When she was 24, as a single Mom, she decided to move yonder and head over the pond, to start her American dream. Life is often about duality and soon after getting her first client, who was a celebrity, she discovered she was pregnant with twins. Once the company she was working for found out about the pregnancy, she lost her job and as a result had her visa cancelled too. Her energy and desire to never give up and deal with the card’s she was dealt, is rather prevalent in her story. It was five months after the birth of her twins, when she started training both Josh Duhamel and his wife at the time, Fergie, from the Black Eyed Peas. Deep down, Natasha is a normal lady, who like us, enjoys the creature comforts of being around her family in the leisure of her own home. She also enjoys hiking and exploring the outdoors to get her weekly dose of nature. In the podcast, we hear what it’s like to train celebrities, we discuss a fair amount about food and healthy eating habits, being vegan, country music, producing reality TV shows, Mama June dropping from 450 pounds to a size 4, advice on how to start your fitness journey and surgical operations in relation to weight loss. We're really thankful that Natasha took the time out from her busy schedule to share her story with us. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#018. Dali and Finn, Founders of Nalu Clothing. Inspiring Young Entrepreneurs
Nalu Clothing Founders. Future Leaders. Hustlers. Siblings. Surfer and Designer. World Travellers. Role Models. Empowerers. Life Changers. Educationalists. It's not every day in your life that you get to meet such amazing kids, like our guests this week. The fact that they are only 17 and 14 years old is going to leave an impression on you when you hear of the impact they are making on this planet. Dali and Finn, have certainly lived a colourful life in their short time and even though they are still only teenagers, they've managed to explore most corners of the earth, as well as leave a trail of positivity, optimism, a sense of enthusiasm and empowerment wherever they go. Dali and Finn are brother and sister, born in Bergen, Netherlands. Their bond and purpose in life however, goes deeper than just being blood relations. When they were 11 and 8 years old, their parents sat them down to discuss a family trip of rather big proportions. We guess, when you're that age a one-way ticket to Nepal sounds pretty darn cool! As a family they spent that year traversing Asia, finding out about new cultures, making new friends, learning new sports, volunteering, learning new languages, as well as getting homeschooled. The fact that they were lugging 30 kg of textbooks around with them, shows you how much value they placed on education, probably without even realising it at the time. After settling in Bali, each year they would return to India, where Vismai and Joyti, their parents, would spend their time volunteering in the local community as Chiropractors. One year on their return visit, they noticed many of their friend’s were not there anymore. They eventually find out that at the age of 13, the Indian government no longer subsidised the children's schooling. If they couldn’t afford the $10’s for a school uniform, then they could no longer attend school. For Dali and Finn, this was something they almost couldn't comprehend and the idea of Nalu Clothing was born. To this day they have donated over 8,000 school uniforms to children in India. As a result, enrolment in school has doubled, grades have gone up 25%, and teenage pregnancies are trending downwards. Dali and Finn started this purely because it was the right thing to do and had no other intentions in mind. The future certainly looks bright and hopeful for all of us with kids like these, who are our future leaders. In the Podcast, we touched on many other subjects; the impact of the fashion industry on the environment, child labour, modern schooling, surfing the barrel and the toxins in our clothes. This truly is a remarkable story about two kids who clearly have the biggest hearts and huge amount of compassion and kindness in them. Get ready to be inspired by these fantastic young beings. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#017. Lizanne Van Vuuren, Coxless Crew Pacific Ocean Rower and Osteopath
Business Woman. World Record Holder. Osteopath. English Rose. South African Lioness. Role Model. Charmer. Coxless Crew Member. Lady Leader. Imagine, one night you are watching a documentary on Netflix and are so inspired by it and then a few weeks later you are actually speaking to a person from that documentary on a Podcast you host…..?! The world we live in these days and our access to people is quite amazing! The simple fact that nobody had ever accomplished what these girls were embarking on doing, highlights how extreme the task at hand was. Four girls, attempting an 8,446 mile row from San Francisco, United States to Cairns, Australia, across the Pacific Ocean. Just the idea of that is mind blowing in itself! Our guest this week, Lizanne, was born in a small town, Zeerust, South Africa, which straddles the border of Botswana. Born in a traditional Afrikaans family, she was 9 years old when her parents decided to move to the UK. Lizanne and her brothers trotted along in excitement and anticipation of the adventure ahead. Her parents genetically passed down musical skills and an interest in medicine, but more importantly, they made her feel that anything in the world was possible and encouraged her to do anything she wanted. After training in London to become an Osteopath, life took her back on a journey to her native South Africa. After completing her first half-ironman race, she realised that you can literally do anything you want with the right mindset, which was kind of the trajectory she needed. Her real adventure, of epic proportions, began in a serendipitous sort of way by replying to a tweet on Twitter. Roll forward a few months and she was selected and in training to be part of the team, of an expedition which had been 3.5 years in the making. In the Podcast we find out about what makes her tick as an individual, attempting to gain 12kg’s of weight in 3 months, sunrises on the ocean, listening to pods of whales, 2 hour sleep rotations, food rationing, being sea sick for 97 days straight and dealing with 30 foot waves. These ‘ordinary’ women managed to finish a completely ‘unordinary’ task. You can only really be in awe of them for their accomplishments. Lizanne shares her part of the story so charmingly and graciously with us. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.
