RHP#033. Tara Russell, Founder and President of Fathom Travel

Founder and President of Fathom Travel. Global Impact Leader. Selfless Human. Human Empowerer. Serial Entrepreneur. Opportunity Curator. Mom. Nature Lover. We live in day and age where most things seem to be in abundance, like information, opportunities, food, stuff, chattels. It’s the less tangible things like gratitude, forgiveness, humility and social impact which we need more of… Do you ever ask yourself important questions like, “How am I contributing to the world for the greater good?”, “What am I doing to help those less fortunate?” Our guest this week, Tara Russell, is a rather remarkable and exceptional lady. She is currently the President of Fathom Travel, which offers travellers unique opportunities to become immersed in and help local communities, while enjoying a holiday on a cruise ship. Tara, grew up in Pennsylvania with her younger brothers and folks, who are still married today after 42 years! They moved around a lot as a family with her Dad’s work opportunities in the paper industry. Tara enjoyed playing sports as a kid and also considered herself a bit of a nerd, who one day wanted to study medicine. Not that she was aware of it at the time, but she was sexually abused as a youngster by a friends brother. These memories were suppressed and only started manifesting and coming back in full clarity, after her own daughter was born. Tara’s time spent in Shanghai, China, as a young lady, made a huge impact on her and ignited her entrepreneurial spirit. She has started and been involved in many organisations. From dealing with the complex issues surrounding human trafficking and prostitution, and helping those women seek freedom from sexual exploitation. To providing a place of safety and empowerment for refugees, prison leavers and the homeless with food service skills, training and job placement opportunities. In the Podcast we discuss many things about Tara’s journey, including; being outside in nature, living in third world countries, choosing the news you consume, sexual abuse, living generously, tips to cut onions without your eyes watering and being the first cruise liner to dock in Havana, Cuba after 40 years. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for, Tara Russell to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#032. Sheena Yap Chan, Host of The Tao of Self Confidence Podcast

Podcast Host. Confidence Spreader. Risk Taker. Explorer. Asian Women Inspirer. Storyteller. Wisdom Sharer. Speaker. Blogger. Woman Entrepreneur. Since we first climbed down from the trees, humans have evolved into an incredibly advanced species. Yet, parts of our traditions and mindset are still so antiquated and timid. We’re happy to explore other planets, but still struggle with more simple things, like human rights and equality. Our guest this week, Sheena Yap Chan, is an Asian woman who has experienced the undertones and unequivocal expectations of her cultural traditions and practices. Sheena, is the founder of the highly successful Podcast, The Tao of Self Confidence. After 3 seasons and 500 episodes it has been downloaded over 600,000 times and counting! She grew up in the Philippines and her family moved to Toronto when she was 7 years old, seeking a more fulfilling life with better opportunities. The horrific event of her aunty dying from falling off a cliff, changed everything for her. She sold everything, resigned from her job and set off to go travel the world and enjoy this ethereal thing we call life. Sheena confesses that she is not the most confident person in the world, although it’s difficult to believe when you listen to her speak and hear all the wisdom and advice she offers. She says that having a purpose which is bigger than yourself, is great for your self confidence because it’s for the greater good of something beyond you. Sheena definitely leads by example, shoots from the hip, speaks the truth and is as authentic as they come. We talk about many other things in the Podcast too, like human trafficking, the non-rights of Chinese women, why being fair skinned is important in Asian culture, lessons learned from her guests, the importance of representation, creating the life you want to live and learning to be happy in the present moment. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Sheena Yap Chan, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#031. Alvin Irby, Founder of Barbershop Books and Social Entrepreneur

Founder of Barbershop Books. School Teacher. Reading Identifier. Author. TED Speaker. Comedian. Crocheter. Cultural Competency Specialist. Social Entrepreneur. They say that laughter is the best medicine. We know that laughter is also contagious and that there is nothing better than an a good ‘ol belly laugh, which makes you roll on the floor! A good laugh gives a great stomach workout which 1,000 sit-ups could never accomplish. Laughter is best enjoyed together!! Our guest this week, Alvin Irby, is one seriously funny dude. He likes to make fun of real life situations and uses humour as a gateway to tackle serious issues. Alvin is an incredibly kind and sincere man, who is making a big impact on many young boys lives. Alvin, grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, with his siblings and they were all raised by their Mom. His Mom was a school teacher and his dad owned a Barbershop. The influence of these would only become apparent later on in his life. Alvin, enjoyed playing outdoors like most young kids do, he also loved a good game of Monopoly. However, the most enjoyment he found as a youngster came from an unlikely source, crocheting!! He wasn’t a big reader himself, but found it interesting while at school and one day asked his teacher to send him to the advanced reading class, so he could stem his boredom and learn more. To his surprise and dismay, he found out that most of the kids in this class were reading novels and writing book reports and…..they were white…… His business, Barbershop Books, provides a selection of 15 appropriately researched books in Barbershops, which cater for 4-8 year old, young black and other boys of colour, who frequent them. They also provide basic literacy training for all barbers and together their mission is to help these boys “identify themselves as readers”. Alvin is a man of many talents and has written his own children’s book called, Gross Greg. Alvin has also given a TED Talk, which was featured by TED and has been seen by over 850,000 people just on the TED website alone. To top it all off, he is a comedian who performs at well known establishments like Gotham Comedy Club in New York City. We had so much fun chatting with Alvin and trust this is going to give you some sore tummy muscles as a result of listening! Among many things, we speak about TSA Agents sense of humour, Bill Cosby’s demise, how comedians are pretty nerdy, the untapped potential inside us all, cultural competency and of course Barbershop Books. RHP#030. Alex Hutchinson, Author of Endure and Editor of Sweat Science

Author. Endurance Expert. Canadian Athlete. PhD Physicist. Journalist. Sweat Science Editor. Ex-Olympic Trialist. Humble Human. Dad. Top Bloke. As humans, a combination of being curious, mischievous and competitive has made us push the limits of what we are capable of as a species. Our future certainly looks like it is going to be even more exciting, based on current research and experimentation. There is also the more philosophical side of capabilities, performance and understanding what a human beings mind and body, is truly capable of. Our guest this week, Alex Hutchinson, is no stranger to these sort of conundrums. It’s fair to say he has ample experience, expertise and knowledge when it comes to physics and human endurance. Alex, is one of the sharpest tools in the shed, probably one of the most humble people you will speak to and also one of the nicest. Alex, grew up in Toronto, Canada, with his folks and older brother. He lived a very typical Canadian upbringing, with plenty of time spent outdoors in nature and also playing tons of street hockey! When he was 15, he became interested in athletics and his big breakthrough came when he was 20 years old. After running the same times for almost 4 years, in the space of a few weeks, he miraculously improved his running time by 19 secs in the 1,500m event from 4:01 to 3:42. He qualified for the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Canadian Olympic trials. He studied to be a PhD Physicist at Cambridge University. He also did a stint as a  postdoctoral researcher on behalf of the NSA, working on things like quantum computing and nano-electromechanics. At 28, Alex decided to re-train as a journalist and now writes for many established and well recognised publications. This chat is seriously interesting and traverses so many great topics. We cover, the endurance of being a parent, his battle with not being consumed by technology, dealing with injuries and setbacks, race tactics, the sub 2 hour marathon attempt and of course his book, Endure, with details around mindset, performance and endurance. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Alex Hutchinson, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#029. Michael O’Brien, Executive Coach. CEO Peloton Coaching and Consulting

Author. TEDx Speaker. Executive Coach. Victor. Mindshifter. altMBA Alumni. Gentleman. Dad. Loving Husband. Wannabe Pro-Tenpin Bowler. This world is full of many Heroes and Sheroes. We salute them all, for everything that they contribute to society. Heroes and Sheroes come in all shapes and sizes and from all different backgrounds. Each of us, has a hero or shero within us. Our guest this week, Michael O’Brien, is a man who by his account had a fairly normal childhood. He lived a quintessential upbringing in upstate New York, with his parents and sister. He attended a good school and wanted to become a professional sportsman, not just any pro-sportsman, a pro-tenpin bowler! He was that cool cat, with his own personalised bowling balls and t-shirts to boot :) After finishing University, Michael got a job as a copier and facsimile machine salesman. Anyone who can blow up a fax machine at a demo with a client and still sell it, must be special! He certainly has a natural and quirky charm and is such a likeable fella. Michael’s quest up the long, windy road of the corporate ladder, began when he got his first job working for a pharmaceutical company. During his tenure, there was never a moment to stop, recalibrate and ask himself if this was the right path for him. He was just doing it because, like he says, “That’s what society wants you to do”. OB, as he is endearingly called by his friends, recalls his “Last bad day”. He was hit head on by an SUV at 40mph, which had traversed into his lane, while he was out cycling in New Mexico. The really scary part is, that he remembers every bit of it. While lying on the asphalt all torn and broken up, he vowed to himself that life would need to change. After 3 months of recovery in hospital and numerous reconstructive surgeries, Michael eventually began his recovery and started living life again on his own terms. He tells us about his shift in mindset and how it happened.  In the conversation we cover so many cool and anecdotal stories. We speak about the gamification of indoor cycling, his low confidence as a kid, his awesome parents, the American football college system, how him and his wife met ‘online’, interviewing his wife while in hospital, details about his book and his charitable ways of giving back. RHP#028. Darryl Edwards, Founder of Primal Play. Movement and Play Specialist

Amortal Human. Founder of Primal Play. The Fitness Explorer. Animal Mover. Play Specialist. Fun Expert. Paleo Chief. Public Speaker. Movement Master. Teacher. We think that it’s important to frequently reconcile how your life is going and to ask yourself important questions like: How much fun am I having? Do I still play? How well am I moving? At a high level, being healthy can be conceptualised fairly simply - Eat well, be active, keep learning, have fun. For many, life can be categorised into three phases. The beginning, when we are young, carefree and live in the moment. The middle, when we are working hard to provide, have more responsibility and more stress. The end when we are retired, have a bit of cash in the bank and start to live life again. Our guest this week, Darryl Edwards, returns for the second time on our Podcast. He is our first returning guest, which makes us really proud and happy. Darryl, is the man behind a movement called Primal Play. Years ago he was faced with some chronic health issues as a result of a sedentary lifestyle while working as an Investment Banker. His health exploration and journey ended up becoming his passion. Recently, Darryl met a man who will forever remain in his mind, he had a few profound, yet simple words to share with Darryl - “Don’t lose your passions”. Darryl’s philosophy on health is very inclusive and multi-dimensional. Rather importantly, he has ventured out and learned from our fellow animals, what we can adopt from them and incorporate into our lives as humans. As he says “Train like an animal, to be more human”. Darryl’s latest book, his 3rd, is called Animal Moves. It is a smartly designed, 90 day program, for beginners to advanced practitioners, teaching us a variety of different types of animal moves. It also encompasses the philosophies and cognitive benefits of why we should be training like an animal and why we should be engaging in quadrupedal and crawling movements. It was nice to hear Darryl’s philosophical side, maybe his primal mannerisms and ways are really coming out these days ;) He shares his advice and wisdom with us around the differences between exercise and movement, the ancestral way of living vs the 21st century way of living, why a combination of older traditional ways and modern technology is best for our existence, why we need to have fun, how to have fun, being more mindful and present, the importance of play and laughter, chronic illness prevention, the benefits of nostalgia, listening to music from our past, dancing like nobody's watching and finding what your superpower is. RHP#027. Rosie Millen, Founder of Miss Nutritionist and Adrenal Fatigue Specialist

Founder of Miss Nutritionist. Entrepreneur. Public Speaker. Adrenal Fatigue Vanquisher. Pianist. Lady Leader. English Rose. Twin. Positivity Spreader. Stress is a serious affliction these days. Was it something which our ancestors and previous generations suffered from so much too? Lo and behold, due to its prevalence, the constant accumulation of stress is actually a coined term ‘Allostatic load’. It is "the wear and tear on the body" that accumulates as an individual is exposed to repeated or chronic stress. Some of us show stress easily, but others hide it really easily too! Our Podcast guest this week, Rosie Millen, grew up in the idyllic Oxfordshire countryside, with rolling green pastures and free roaming farm animals. Rosie, is an identical twin and has an older brother and sister too. There were a lot of magical moments for them while growing up, with a peter pan like tree-house in their back garden, where they would spend endless hours playing with their friends. She was always destined for success and had many accolades while growing up. Rosie is a Grade 8 Violinist and a Grade 6 Pianist. She toured the world playing for an orchestra and also excelled as a gymnast. Rosie and her twin, Susie, leveraged their genetics as youngsters and modelled for a living. It was the modelling which sparked, Rosie’s interest in nutrition. Four years after qualifying and working incessantly as an entrepreneur and nutritionist, her world came crashing down. She collapsed while walking in a London park. Fortunately she managed to get a taxi home, went straight to bed and literally stayed there for 3 years…. After being misdiagnosed with depression, she researched for herself and got further opinions to find out that, what she actually had, was adrenal fatigue. There were moments in those 3 years when times were really tough and Rosie contemplated if it was all worth carrying on for. Rosie is a very charming, bubbly and charismatic young lady. These days, she personally coaches 1,000’s of women and men on how to increase their energy levels. She is also very active on the public speaking circuit and thrives while giving talks at large corporate institutions spreading her advice and positivity. RHP#026. Shanan Worrall, Founder of Shark Eyes and Big Wave Surfer

Founder of Shark Eyes. Big Wave Surfer. Hero. Abalone Fisherman. Free Diver. Teacher. Dad. Adrenaline Junkie. Perfect Wave Chaser. Shark Attack Rescuer. Legend Human. The ocean is home to many things, two things in particular which we will always be  intrigued and awed by, sharks and big waves. There are surfers who spend their lives chasing and searching for that ultimate ride. There are also many people who, on a daily basis put their lives at risk, purely by performing their professions when venturing into the ocean.  Our guest this week, Shanan Worrall, is a man who his whole life, has been a ‘water baby’. An extreme water baby! Shanan, grew up in a small town called Esperance in Western Australia, with his parents and 4 siblings. From a very early age he learnt his trade of fishing for abalone and riding big waves in his backyard, the great Indian Ocean. These days, Shanan is the founder of Shark Eyes, a product created as a non-invasive and natural shark deterrent. When Shanan starts explaining the science around the product, you start nodding your head because it makes so much sense. The beauty of his product lies in its effectiveness and simplicity.  Losing his brother and having a couple of near death experiences himself, serve as reminders to make the most of life. He knows that life can be taken in an instant. While on a 6 week fishing trip, hours away from any form of civilisation, his friend was attacked by a Great White Shark. He was attacked head first and was up to his torso in the shark's mouth. Miraculously he got loose, but was badly scathed and fortunately survived after being rescued by Shanan. Shanan was shaken up and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), wasn’t able to enter the water for over a year and also had to change careers.  On the flip side, Shanan is an epic surfer….like bodacious! He is one of those guys who you see on the surfer videos catching those ginormous waves in the crazy barrels. Shanan has in fact won a prestigious award for the best tube of the year in 2017!! Shanan is such a kind and sincere guy. Now that he is older with a few years under his belt, he spends a lot of his time teaching youngsters of the risks involved with a life on and in the ocean.  This conversation is filled with many real-life captivating stories. We also cover interesting topics such as, surfing etiquette, territorial surfing (the good and bad), free diving, apnea and C02 levels, mammalian dive reflex (MDR), breathing and mindset, how to manage stressful situations, shark protection, and animal mimicry. Her experiences there had a profound impact on the person she is today.   She has always been someone to lend herself to the community and researching ways for us to better exist and co-exist as a human species. She is also an avid environmentalist and teacher of sustainable living. She manages many networks who provide support and relief for communities, by teaching them how to grow and cultivate food. She certainly enjoys experimenting and has in recent years, lived without buying plastic for a whole year, eaten only food waste for a week and is soon partaking in cryotherapy treatment twice a day for 10 days, while measuring her immune function and biomarkers. Sit back and listen in awe when she tells us about the harsh environment on Mars. The crazy windstorms which engulf the entire planet, the mountainous regions, the deep caves and the abundance of tiny red dust particles. In this conversation there are many topics visited, the importance of sleep monitoring, Heart Rate Variability (HRV), the benefits of getting out in nature, respecting where your food comes from, homeschooling, experimentation, sustainability, waste, food production and of course The Mars One Program. Curious minds are a beautiful thing and this lady is going to naturally entice you to try new things and be a better version of yourself. Dear Dianne, we are fully rooting for you and have full faith and trust in you as a Ridiculously amazing Human to go and terraform Mars for us. There are a million more questions we wanted to ask Dianne about Mars and her other feats, but that will have to wait for Part 2 of our conversation at some stage in the future!! We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#024. Dr Thandi Ndlovu, CEO Motheo Group and Freedom Fighter

Freedom Fighter. Mother Figure. CEO. Doctor. Women Empowerer. Political Activist. Exiled. Philanthropist. Entrepreneur. Thought Leader. Dr T. Sometimes it’s worth reflecting on what you have achieved and experienced in life. History has a strange way of repeating itself and it’s those who are aware of it, who will progressively move forward by learning from previous mistakes. Our guest this week, Dr Thandi Ndlovu, is the epitome of somebody who has put other people’s lives before hers. From a young age, she was a mother figure and would take women under her wing and offer safety and guidance. These traits came very naturally to her. Dr Thandi, is one of the most remarkable ladies you will ever meet, her story is truly incredible and dynamic, especially when we start to unpack the events of her life. She was born and raised in Soweto, South Africa. She grew up as the middle child of 5 kids, in a loving and nurturing household. She was always an avid reader and scholar. Dr Thandi, was subject to one of the most inhumane periods of our times, Apartheid in South Africa. On the 16th June, 1976 there were events which occurred in South Africa which will never be forgotten. What started as a peaceful demonstration of students marching for their educational rights, ended up in barbaric bloodshed during the Soweto Uprising. Dr Thandi’s brother, Hastings, was one of those fatalities.  In her struggle for freedom she went into exile and wasn’t to return to South Africa for another 14 years. This liberation movement needed to expose what was really going on in South Africa, with the hope of one day returning to her beloved country, as a totally free person in a democracy. Most of her exile was spent in Zambia but she was also stationed in Mozambique, Angola, Tanzania and the USSR. She trained up in Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), which was the ANC military wing. Part of her training was also in the USSR, where she was sent for a year to attend Communistic and Socialistic school.  During her time in Zambia, she studied medicine and graduated as Doctor. It was in her last year, when she got the news that the ban had been lifted and people in exile were allowed to move back. This conversation is teeming with stories like, growing up in Soweto, meals of chicken feet and pork knuckles, street games, the suppression of black people’s rights, walking across country borders into exile, the disgraceful act of bantu education, communist training in the USSR, and how the ANC was run while in exile.  These days, Dr Thandi or Dr T, as she is more affectionately known by her employees, is the CEO of a multi-billion Rand (South African Currency) construction business, whose primary focus is developing low cost housing. She also runs the Dr Thandi Ndlovu Children’s Foundation.  The story above ended in 1991. Part 2 and the rest of Dr Thandi’s journey and story is coming in a few weeks. We hope you enjoy Part 1 of this conversation as much as we did.
