RHP#046. Rick Clemons, Bold Move Expert, Host of Life (Un)Closeted Podcast, Status Quo Disruptor, Gay Bear
Bold Move Expert. Podcast Host. (Un)Closeted Human. Status Quo Disruptor. Teddy Bear. Keynote Speaker. Author. Closet Deconstructor. Confidence Creator. Coach. If we are 100% honest with ourselves, there are one or two secrets which we will all probably take to the grave with us. Personal secrets can eat you up and manifest into something rather big and nasty. For our guest this week, Rick Clemons, he kept a big secret for a large part of his life. You see, Rick tried to tell his secret once but those who heard him, his parents, were not ready to believe him and were themselves confused and ashamed of who their son was. Rick was born in Loveland, Colorado. Together with his folks and brother, they moved around a lot as a family. He was raised as a Seventh-day Adventist, but his family was a sort of “rebel” in the sense that they were more flexible in their practice. He was a musical little guy and one of his most vivid memories was having a crush on his piano teacher’s husband… Rick was molested by an older family member when he was between the ages of 5 to 7 years old. Even though it is extremely sad and disgraceful what happened to him, he recalls it as being a sexual awakening. At 19 years old, he finally came out the closet and announced he was gay. Only to be told it was against their religious beliefs and that he needed to see somebody to help him sort it out. He reclused back to his closet. Rick put his dirty little secret on a shelf and immersed himself in work and other distractions…..like getting married for 13 years….to a lady. He also fathered two beautiful daughters while married. His sexual desires were always fulfilled both in and out of matrimony. After an encounter on a work trip to the UK, with a charming Englishman whom he met in a gay bar, he realised it was time to expose the truth. Back in the US, he drove from the airport back home and considered ending his life by driving under a truck, but destiny wasn’t going to let him do it. He told his wife and left home that evening…. These days, Rick is a happily married to his husband. He is also someone who helps others make bold moves in their lives too. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#045. Alice Zaslavsky, Australian Masterchef Alumna, Best Selling Author and Founder of Alice in Frames
Australian Masterchef Alumna. Food Nerd. Jewish Immigrant. Teacher. Edutainer. Author. TV Presenter. Food Judge. Culinary Conversationalist. Smiler. Realist. Business Woman. So many things have occurred in our recent history. It was only in 1991, when the dissolution of the USSR took place. The dissolution resulted in the forming of 15 independent republics, one of those being Georgia. 25 years ago, Alice Zaslavsky and her family got on an aeroplane, fleeing Tbilisi, Georgia, because luck and hope had run out for them. It was that desperate, that her parents only had enough money for them to fly to Singapore and from there they were going to borrow some money from friends and family, to carry on their journey and get to Australia. They were armed with only books and records. Alice has fond memories of her childhood in Tbilisi. Food was always a big part of her life and her love of food was influenced by family feasts and weekend trips to her grandfather’s ‘Dacha’. Boris, her Grandfather, taught her to toast sunflower seeds, which they would eat together while he would pick his fruit to use for his preserves. Arriving in Australia at 7 years old, with very little belongings and not a word of English, was to be the start of an epic journey. Her folks soon found jobs and moved to Melbourne. They travelled a lot for work and it was cheaper for them to take her with, than to hire babysitters. So she enjoyed an adventurous childhood. In 2012, Alice decided to enter Masterchef Australia and as a result had to forego her career as a deputy head teacher, but it was a risk she was willing to take. Her experience on Masterchef provided her with the trajectory she needed to put in motion the visualisations of her future career and business. These days, Alice is literally flying. ‘Alice in Frames’, as she is endearingly known, finds it liberating teaching kids the importance of food, how to cook and why to eat your veggies. She has a best selling food book, TV shows and a radio show and is constantly evolving as an edutainer in the food space. In the Podcast we explore all of the above and many other interesting topics, such as: Being an immigrant family, a life full of food, dealing with broken families, making the most of what you have, finding happiness within yourself, being a modern jew, the life of a Masterchef contestant and setting up your own businesses. RHP#044. Tony Moze, Edutainer, Entrepreneur, Passion Promoter and The Rhyming Book Reviewer
Edutainer. Passion Promoter. Bookworm. Rapper. Musician. Army Veteran. Entrepreneur. Educationalist. Leader. Innovator. Eyelash King. Top Bloke. Isn’t it nice to be surprised by the passion, energy and optimism people can bring with them when connecting with others. It really is an awesome trait and skill to have, to be able to lift a crowd, simply by the way you interact with them. Our guest this week, Tony Moze, is one of those humans who has lived such a varied and eventful life. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, to his Sudanese Mom and Dominican Dad. His Latino flare and African beat are what makes this man such an exciting human melting pot! Tony had a passion for reading and was musically trained from 9 years old. At 14, he moved to Connecticut with his Mom, where he joined a rap group. That’s when his passion for rapping and hip hop really took off. At 18, he joined the US Army as a Reservist. In 2002, he received a call while at a party, to tell him to pack his gear because he was required to go to war. By 2003 he was trained up and left for Kuwait. He spent 9 months driving oil tankers during the Iraq War. Tony’s love for psychology and people extended to his occupation, where he worked as a mental health worker for almost 10 years. He had a daughter he wasn’t prepared for during that time, with a lady he wasn’t destined to be with. It was on a trip to Norway when he decided it was time to change his life and differentiate himself. He set-up the Rhyming Book Reviewer, which gave him the opportunity to mix his passions of rap, reading and music. These days you can find Tony specialising his craft as an Edutainer! We manage to explore many interesting topics in this conversation, dealing with divorce, being bullied and ostracised, mental health issues, serving your country, rapping your way around the world, vulnerability, following your passion and getting your life back on track. RHP#043. Paul Connolly, Child Abuse Victim and Author of Not Normal
7th Son of a 7th Son. Victim of Child Abuse. ex-Gangster. Celebrity Personal Trainer. Lucky Charm. Author. Public Speaker. Loving Husband. Dad. When you start a story with….”At 2 weeks old, he was put out in the rubbish by his mother…”, you know it’s going to be a tough and sad story to listen to and follow. Despite what media may portray, we feel that humans, for the most part, go through life with good intentions in mind. However there are a subset of people who are disgusting and disgraceful humans. There is absolutely zero way to justify the behaviour of child abusers and paedophiles. Our guest this week, Paul Connolly, is a man who was abandoned at two weeks old. He was thrown out in the rubbish by his mother and spent his childhood growing up in the UK Care Home system. Paul’s first few years in care were enjoyable and he treasures being fortunate enough to have experienced some good memories and moments. It was when he moved to the notorious St Leonards Children’s Home, where the brutal and sadistic torture started. The ‘gift’ for his 8th birthday, was not getting raped. He encountered his first of many experiences of the ‘snatch’ or ‘rape squad’. Their ‘house parents’, would go to the pub, get drunk with other people who were part of a paedophile ring and then go back to the dormitories and rape the children. At 14, Paul quit school and had also developed into a handy boxer. It was around this time when he also first stood up to Bill Starling and saved one of the girls from getting rapped. That was a turning point in his life, as he realised he was able to defend himself and others. Once Paul was able to get out of the care system, he started to live a double life as a gangster and a celebrity personal trainer. It was a stroke of fortune, deservedly, which acquitted his charges and allowed him to pursue his personal training career. Paul was illiterate until he was 25. His first book called, ‘Against All Odds’, is the number 1 ebook ever sold on Amazon. These days, Paul’s life is very different. However, the emotional trauma and memories have eternally scarred him and will never be forgotten. Paul is doing absolutely everything he can in his power to prevent any of these atrocities ever occurring again. This truly is a harrowing story and gives a lot of perspective on how lucky most of us are and that we can all find ways to deal with difficulties in our past. Just a polite warning that there is some strong language in this conversation. Let’s find out what it means for Paul Connolly to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#042. Jay Maryniak, No. 1 Fitness Trainer and Founder of JTM Fit
Personal Trainer. Fitness Professional. Dog Dad. Instagram Influencer. Type 1 Diabetic. Wellness Authority. Animal Lover. Smiler. Genuine Top Bloke. It’s so easy in life to judge somebody based purely on how they look. Most of us are guilty of it, it’s probably just an insecure human trait. It takes a lot of maturity and wisdom to not judge a book by it’s cover and create preconceived ideas. Being conscious of not acting that way, will help each of us grow as individuals. Our guest this week, Jay Maryniak, is a man who often experiences being judged by his appearance. He speaks about how people that see him for the first time usually don’t want to train with him because of how he looks. While Jay is built like a beast and his appearance may seem overwhelming, it’s really important to understand what backstory makes the man mountain we see today! Jay grew up in New York State with his brother and single Mom. From a very early age, he recalls always having low self-esteem and self-doubt issues. He found drugs and alcohol when he was young which temporarily helped silence the voice of fear and quieten his insecurities. By the time he was 15, he was indulging in some heavy gear. Taking drugs like cocaine, oxycontin and acid. He got suspended from school on too many occasions to ever keep count. His addiction became so serious that he needed these drugs every single day of his life as a teenager. Eventually, it all got too much for his Mom and she kicked Jay out of home. Two weeks before his last bad day, he went AWOL and was in a very bad state. He was ‘higher’ and more addicted than ever…...Miraculously, he had a moment of clarity when he was 20. He realised he was a burden and liability and checked himself into recovery, to begin his journey back, using the twelve step program. Jay turned his life around through various fitness activities, but was soon dealt another blow when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Jay has blown up into a fitness celebrity but remains as humble as ever. He has single handedly amassed a huge following on Instagram, where he shares his daily workouts and exercises. Jay tells us why it’s so important to stay true to who you are and who you associate yourself with. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#041. Paul De Gelder, Shark Attack Survivor and Motivational Speaker
Plant Powered. Bionic Man. Shark Attack Survivor. Animal Lover. ex-Navy Clearance Diver. Shark Conservationist. Motivational Speaker. Author. Humble Human. It’s really hard to imagine your worst nightmare ever coming true. Most of us in life are absolutely fearful of something. There are most likely two things which 99% of the world's population are collectively afraid of…..public speaking and sharks!! As our guest this week says, “Your greatest fears can actually become your greatest strengths.” Paul De Gelder, is a man whose two greatest fears of sharks and public speaking, have been something which he has had to face head-on, due to one particular encounter which altered the trajectory of his life. Paul came from humble beginnings and was born as the first child of 4 in Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne, Australia. His Policeman Dad, was away from home a lot which left his Mom to bring up himself and his younger siblings. As the eldest, he had less support and developed a fractious and rebellious streak, which got him kicked out of home at seventeen. After a few wasteful and wayward years of working in strip bars and an unfortunately unsuccessful hip hop career, he joined the Army. After receiving his maroon beret, it was the first time that he felt he really had something tangible to be proud of in his life. Paul really started to find his groove when he was recruited into the Australian Navy Clearance Divers. It was however, during a terrorist training activity in the Sydney Harbour, that would alter the path of his life forever. Paul was attacked by a bull shark. The shark bit off his hand, tore off his hamstring muscle and his sciatic nerve. What he endured the following days in hospital, were a culmination of the worst pain he had ever experienced in his life, the thought of wanting to end his life right there and making the decision to have his lame leg amputated, as it would serve no purpose in his life going forward! This man is an incredible human and has the mindset most of us can only dream of having. His recovery story is heroic and probably what you would see in a Hollywood film, he has never suffered from PTSD, had flashbacks or undergone any counselling. It’s a truly remarkable story, which makes you assess your own life and consider how you can focus on the positive and be thankful for everything you have. We cover a lot in this conversation: Being grateful for what you have, learning from 3rd world experiences, the struggle of a rebellious childhood, military life, hip hop and opening for Snoop Dogg, mindset, his fear of sharks and public speaking and how to learn things again which we all take for granted, like getting into the bath… We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#040. Pamela Gay, PhD Astronomer and Host of Astronomy Cast
PhD Astronomer. Educator. Comic Aficionado. Writer. Podcaster. Scientist. Star Gazer. Big Thinker. Speaker. Storyteller. Interlocutor. Proud Nerd. Gracious Human. Explorer. How often are you star struck?! Space, our universe, planets and existential life, are things which us humans are often mesmerised by. You would perhaps think that it’s a good idea for us to sort out more pressing matters on earth, ones that we have some sort of control over. However, there are good reasons for our curious explorations, as the new technologies which are tested and created in space, do trickle down into our everyday use. Our guest this week, Pamela Gay, is a magnificently smart and interesting lady who has dedicated most of her life to understanding more about our own universe and sharing her knowledge with other inquisitive minds. She has the voice of an angel and her articulation makes you want to close your eyes and listen to her talk about all the wonderful marvels in our night skies! Pamela was born in Southern California. In her early years she grew up seeing space shuttle landings at Edwards Air Force Base. Even though they moved to Massachusetts in her second grade, she kept finding herself connected to space, through reading magazines and getting a telescope of her own. Growing up in the 80’s, she learned that she did not belong to ‘the normal part of society’, so she embraced it and was comfortable with being a nerd. It wasn’t her intellect and geekiness which became the torment of her childhood, but rather the fact that her surname was ‘Gay’. As with many industries these days, discrimination and harassment towards women, is something which is still rife in Astronomy. It takes strong ladies like Pamela to voice their concerns. More importantly, it is also the responsibility and prerogative of men to stand up for women and call out their male counterparts, to help eradicate what are antiquated and unacceptable ways of behaving. In this Podcast we covered some fascinating ground. Exploring topics, like being a nerd, harassment and inequality, real life avatars, comic books, finding your tribe, online trolls, everything astronomy and of course the importance of looking up to the sky and thinking big. RHP#039. Andrew Roberts, Warrant Officer Class 01 and Domestic Abuse Victim
Warrant Officer Class 01. Soldier. Domestic Abuse Victim. Leader. Instructor. Veteran. Speaker. Sergeant Major. Loving Dad. Brave and Courageous Human. Serving in the army must be one of the most brave and courageous things anyone in the world can do. What the disciplined and strict regimes teach you are invaluable in terms of ethics, confidence, self-esteem, teamwork and many other values. Basic training, certainly has helped many a young man and woman to have a purpose in life. We salute every human who swears their allegiance and puts themselves out there. Our guest this week, Andrew Roberts, is a man who have served 30 years of his life in the Australian Military. He joined when he was 17, speaks fondly of his time and is indebted for everything he achieved and experienced. To this day, he carries with him, the lessons he learned of doing things in a smart and efficient manner. Andrew grew up in Wollongong, Australia, with his folks and older brother. His resilience and mental toughness were garnered from a young age. When he was 7, his parents divorced and he was made by the authorities to choose which parent he wanted to live with. Andy’s darkest days were a result of being a victim of brutal domestic abuse and violence for 10 years. He was isolated and distanced from family and friends and he lived in a constant state of fear, because he knew that society would only believe her. He had suicidal thoughts because of this situation and the lack of support and understanding from state services. He went to the police and they did nothing for him. He talked to people about it on a hotline, where he received answers like “we can’t help you, you are a male”. These days, Andy engages himself in conversations to promote awareness of domestic violence and the victims. It’s hard to even imagine what this man has been through. What may seem like an intimidating presence, is the polar opposite of the story he takes us on. This is our rawest chat and had a profound impact on us both. We discuss many things including, his free bootcamp classes, mental toughness and resilience, war stories, family structure and support, domestic abuse and being able to speak about it. Each human will be touched in some way by this story. Andrew Roberts - you are a brave man beyond any imagination for speaking out and sharing your story. We thank and salute you Sir. RHP#038. Simon van Gend, Founder of Simon Van Gend Band
Musician. Thinker. Artist. Brave Man. South African. Teacher. Microbiologist. Typesetter. Band Member. Courageous Human. Convalescent. We like to talk about important topics which need to be discussed, depression is one of those. While our intent is to spread a positive message, it is also to highlight the realities of life and get people talking about things. Depression is something which can grip and squeeze the life out of you. Musicians and other creative people, often use their skills and talents as a way of releasing the pain and anguish they experience. Our guest this week, Simon Van Gend, is a South African musician who shares his story with us. We go deep and raw, he exposes himself and makes himself vulnerable, which we are grateful for. Simon grew up in East London, South Africa, with his folks and older brother. He has memories of feeling very abandoned as a youngster. In order to survive and get the love he needed, he had to completely bury his anger. What eventuates when that happens, is you get a depressed adult. Playing music, ended up being one of his saving graces. There was a particular serendipitous moment, which had a profound impact on his life. He met an Italian lady in South Africa, who he taught English to. She happened to be a psychoanalyst and someone who ended up mentoring and helping him through his tough times. He went to Italy for a few months, started his healing and restoration and began playing more music. It was also when he recorded his first album. We discuss very important topics in this conversation; evolution, religion, science, serendipity, anger and depression, our formative years, catharsis through music, vulnerability, polyamory and most importantly, the light at the end of the tunnel. Simon is a very brave man. He has a story which is more common than we may think. A musician finding his way in life, trying to crack the music industry. Simon, thanks for laying yourself bare and putting everything on the table. Your message is going to touch many more than you will ever imagine. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#037. Kelly Rennie, Mums Fitness Expert and Founder of Busy Mum Fitness.
Busy Mum. Entrepreneur. International Fitness Model. Author. Pre and Post Natal Expert. Lady Leader. Writer. Cover Girl. Fitness Professional. Life Changer. Life is one notably complex journey, which we all go through. Our greatest lessons are often learnt from our toughest times. It’s hard to even imagine how single Mom’s cope with the huge pressures of everyday life, along with raising a family and finding some down time for themselves! Our guest this week, Kelly Rennie, is the Founder of Busy Mum Fitness. It’s a business she started 5 years ago, while learning to be a mum of two young girls herself. These days she has a thriving business with big goals to help 10,000 Mum’s live happier and healthier lives. Kelly grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand, with her twin, as part of a Seventh Day Adventist family. Their household revolved more around religion than anything else. She always enjoyed playing sport and the social element, which generally involved a lot of drinking. When she was 20 years old, she had gained 20 kgs of extra weight and was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. She moved to London when she was 21 on an overseas experience. It was also where she developed a condition called Agoraphobia, which is the extreme or irrational fear of crowded or confined public spaces. A combination of a book she read, together with meeting her boyfriend, ultimately led her to changing her lifestyle and turning her health around. She also entered her first bodybuilding competitions which was the beginning of her notoriety as an international fitness model. Back in New Zealand, while juggling her two kids, was when ‘Busy Mum Fitness’ was established. Kelly hired a business coach, bought the domain name and then within a matter of weeks was selling online coaching programs. She now lives on the Gold Coast, as a single Mum and gets to spend a lot of her time outdoors and near the beach. Exactly how she has always envisioned and believed it looking. You definitely don’t need to be a single Mom to enjoy this Podcast as we discuss so many meaningful and significant topics. How to deal with anxiety and depression, creating vision boards, living in nature, managing fears, running a business, the importance of hiring a business coach, pre and postnatal advice, keeping things simple, alternative medicine and what it’s like to get a thank-you letter from Kate Middleton! We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Kelly Rennie, to be Ridiculously Human.
