The Ridiculously Human Podcast
None of us were put on this planet to be a watered down version of ourselves.
In a world where it can seem that people are anti-human and wanting to become cyborg transhumans, this podcast is here to let you know that it’s perfectly ok to be a cool, fun-loving, caring and kind HUMAN!
My desire, through the art of storytelling and story listening, is to share a captivating narrative that traverses everything it means to be human. Not just any human…Ridiculously Human!

RHP#039. Andrew Roberts, Warrant Officer Class 01 and Domestic Abuse Victim
Warrant Officer Class 01. Soldier. Domestic Abuse Victim. Leader. Instructor. Veteran. Speaker. Sergeant Major. Loving Dad. Brave and Courageous Human. Serving in the army must be one of the most brave and courageous things anyone in the world can do. What the disciplined and strict regimes teach you are invaluable in terms of ethics, confidence, self-esteem, teamwork and many other values. Basic training, certainly has helped many a young man and woman to have a purpose in life. We salute every human who swears their allegiance and puts themselves out there. Our guest this week, Andrew Roberts, is a man who have served 30 years of his life in the Australian Military. He joined when he was 17, speaks fondly of his time and is indebted for everything he achieved and experienced. To this day, he carries with him, the lessons he learned of doing things in a smart and efficient manner. Andrew grew up in Wollongong, Australia, with his folks and older brother. His resilience and mental toughness were garnered from a young age. When he was 7, his parents divorced and he was made by the authorities to choose which parent he wanted to live with. Andy’s darkest days were a result of being a victim of brutal domestic abuse and violence for 10 years. He was isolated and distanced from family and friends and he lived in a constant state of fear, because he knew that society would only believe her. He had suicidal thoughts because of this situation and the lack of support and understanding from state services. He went to the police and they did nothing for him. He talked to people about it on a hotline, where he received answers like “we can’t help you, you are a male”. These days, Andy engages himself in conversations to promote awareness of domestic violence and the victims. It’s hard to even imagine what this man has been through. What may seem like an intimidating presence, is the polar opposite of the story he takes us on. This is our rawest chat and had a profound impact on us both. We discuss many things including, his free bootcamp classes, mental toughness and resilience, war stories, family structure and support, domestic abuse and being able to speak about it. Each human will be touched in some way by this story. Andrew Roberts - you are a brave man beyond any imagination for speaking out and sharing your story. We thank and salute you Sir. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Andrew Roberts to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#038. Simon van Gend, Founder of Simon Van Gend Band
Musician. Thinker. Artist. Brave Man. South African. Teacher. Microbiologist. Typesetter. Band Member. Courageous Human. Convalescent. We like to talk about important topics which need to be discussed, depression is one of those. While our intent is to spread a positive message, it is also to highlight the realities of life and get people talking about things. Depression is something which can grip and squeeze the life out of you. Musicians and other creative people, often use their skills and talents as a way of releasing the pain and anguish they experience. Our guest this week, Simon Van Gend, is a South African musician who shares his story with us. We go deep and raw, he exposes himself and makes himself vulnerable, which we are grateful for. Simon grew up in East London, South Africa, with his folks and older brother. He has memories of feeling very abandoned as a youngster. In order to survive and get the love he needed, he had to completely bury his anger. What eventuates when that happens, is you get a depressed adult. Playing music, ended up being one of his saving graces. There was a particular serendipitous moment, which had a profound impact on his life. He met an Italian lady in South Africa, who he taught English to. She happened to be a psychoanalyst and someone who ended up mentoring and helping him through his tough times. He went to Italy for a few months, started his healing and restoration and began playing more music. It was also when he recorded his first album. We discuss very important topics in this conversation; evolution, religion, science, serendipity, anger and depression, our formative years, catharsis through music, vulnerability, polyamory and most importantly, the light at the end of the tunnel. Simon is a very brave man. He has a story which is more common than we may think. A musician finding his way in life, trying to crack the music industry. Simon, thanks for laying yourself bare and putting everything on the table. Your message is going to touch many more than you will ever imagine. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Life is one notably complex journey, which we all go through. Our greatest lessons are often learnt from our toughest times. It’s hard to even imagine how single Mom’s cope with the huge pressures of everyday life, along with raising a family and finding some down time for themselves! Our guest this week, Kelly Rennie, is the Founder of Busy Mum Fitness. It’s a business she started 5 years ago, while learning to be a mum of two young girls herself. These days she has a thriving business with big goals to help 10,000 Mum’s live happier and healthier lives. Kelly grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand, with her twin, as part of a Seventh Day Adventist family. Their household revolved more around religion than anything else. She always enjoyed playing sport and the social element, which generally involved a lot of drinking. When she was 20 years old, she had gained 20 kgs of extra weight and was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. She moved to London when she was 21 on an overseas experience. It was also where she developed a condition called Agoraphobia, which is the extreme or irrational fear of crowded or confined public spaces. A combination of a book she read, together with meeting her boyfriend, ultimately led her to changing her lifestyle and turning her health around. She also entered her first bodybuilding competitions which was the beginning of her notoriety as an international fitness model. Back in New Zealand, while juggling her two kids, was when ‘Busy Mum Fitness’ was established. Kelly hired a business coach, bought the domain name and then within a matter of weeks was selling online coaching programs. She now lives on the Gold Coast, as a single Mum and gets to spend a lot of her time outdoors and near the beach. Exactly how she has always envisioned and believed it looking. You definitely don’t need to be a single Mom to enjoy this Podcast as we discuss so many meaningful and significant topics. How to deal with anxiety and depression, creating vision boards, living in nature, managing fears, running a business, the importance of hiring a business coach, pre and postnatal advice, keeping things simple, alternative medicine and what it’s like to get a thank-you letter from Kate Middleton! RHP#035. Luke Storey, Transformational Coach and Host of The Life Stylist Podcast
True Gentleman. Podcast Host. Stylist. Master Biohacker. Music Aficionado. Entrepreneur. Lifestyle Design Coach. Public Speaker. Experimentalist. As humans, we are certainly an inquisitive and curious bunch. Both are fine traits which have led to many discoveries and inventions, as well as disagreements and altercations. It’s fair to say, that deep down, we are in some way curious about the lives of the rich and famous. Although from the outside, nothing is quite what it seems. Our guest this week, Luke Storey, is a man with a biography that is indeed very colourful, indulgent and varied. What started off rather chaotically, has turned into a much deeper journey of spirituality and self-awakening. Luke was born in Aspen, Colorado, into a fairly dysfunctional family environment. His Mom was a hippie and his Dad a mountain man. He was sexually abused by a baby sitter when he was a young boy, which he found shameful and then turned to alcohol and drugs as a coping mechanism…..all before he was 9 years old :( Luke admittedly suffered from serious behavioural problems and by the age of 14, he was committing numerous punishable felonies, like arson and robbing people’s houses. During probation, he was sent to a cult-like boarding school in Northern Idaho. Their unorthodox ways of treating kids never quite dealt with the actual issues. Life got really exciting when he moved to Hollywood at 19. He started playing in a band, began hanging out with his childhood heroes and took his narcotic consumption to the next level. This deleterious and indulgent lifestyle eventually became too much and led to opprobrium and him hitting his rock bottom. To this day, he has been 21 years sober. He worked as a fashion stylist for 17 years in LA, dressing all of the A-list movie and rocks stars. He has started many successful businesses, like his School of Style and The Life Stylist Podcast. This Podcast is jammed with amazing stories and next level health tips and advice. We hear about Luke’s recent stem cell treatment including penis shots, his current relationship with celibacy, almost making it big time with his rock band, dressing Marilyn Manson for 3 years, his relationship with artificial light and why electromagnetic fields are the biggest thing for us to worry about from a health perspective. It was an honour for a man like this to come on our Podcast. Luke we salute you and thank you for your generous donation of time. All the best brother and keep being an inspiring and amazing human. Medicine Hunter. Pioneer. Yogi. Author. Plant Medicine Expert. Educator. Firewalker. Environmentalist. Smiler. Storyteller. Chief. Maxipe. The earth is such an amazing place, filled with all these naturally existing treasures. So many of them are untouched and unexplored as mother nature has hidden these wonderful healing medicinal plants in the world’s most remote locations. A ‘treasure hunt’ to find them is something which adds to the curiosity of the human mind. Our guest this week, Chris Kilham, is the ultimate trailblazer and has visited over 45 countries. When Chris visits, he goes to the unexplored corners to immerse himself in the local ancient cultures and learn their traditional ways of healing, relaxation and enjoyment. His main drivers are to promote natural plant-based medicines, to protect the natural environment and to support indigenous cultures. Chris, is the founder of Medicine Hunter Inc. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts and had a very colourful upbringing. His first experience with a psychoactive drug was when he was 15 and that was also around the age when him and his liberal thinking friends took an interest in meditation and yoga. The Vietnam War and politics influenced his life greatly. That was also when he started getting involved in apothecaries and learning about herbs and medicinal plants. He also learned to engage in activities that were beneficial for others and the environment. Chris’ journeys to these remote parts of the world, introduced him to local delicacies like kava, superfoods like maca and psychedelics like ayahuasca, mushrooms, peyote, san pedro and iboga plants. It’s these discoveries which made him start bigger projects to help local communities to farm and manufacture these products. Often helping to greatly boost their economies as a result. This Podcast is a filled with fascinating facts, which are going to open your mind to the world of plant medicine. Chris explains their history, debunks the myths and tells us the truth based on many years of research. He is a massive advocate of legalising cannabis as it’s cannabinoids are one of the most versatile medicines on earth. Close your eyes and listen to this great storyteller, take you on his journey of first seeing cannabis in the Altái Mountains of Siberia, fire-walking with native tribes in the South Pacific, experiencing the psychedelic benefits of Ayahuasca and meeting Shaman ladies in Peru who are soothsayers that read the back of cocoa leaves. We live in day and age where most things seem to be in abundance, like information, opportunities, food, stuff, chattels. It’s the less tangible things like gratitude, forgiveness, humility and social impact which we need more of… Do you ever ask yourself important questions like, “How am I contributing to the world for the greater good?”, “What am I doing to help those less fortunate?” Our guest this week, Tara Russell, is a rather remarkable and exceptional lady. She is currently the President of Fathom Travel, which offers travellers unique opportunities to become immersed in and help local communities, while enjoying a holiday on a cruise ship. Tara, grew up in Pennsylvania with her younger brothers and folks, who are still married today after 42 years! Not that she was aware of it at the time, but she was sexually abused as a youngster by a friends brother. From dealing with the complex issues surrounding human trafficking and prostitution, and helping those women seek freedom from sexual exploitation. To providing a place of safety and empowerment for refugees, prison leavers and the homeless with food service skills, training and job placement opportunities. Podcast Host. Confidence Spreader. Risk Taker. Explorer. Asian Women Inspirer. Storyteller. Wisdom Sharer. Speaker. Blogger. Woman Entrepreneur. Since we first climbed down from the trees, humans have evolved into an incredibly advanced species. Yet, parts of our traditions and mindset are still so antiquated and timid. We’re happy to explore other planets, but still struggle with more simple things, like human rights and equality. Our guest this week, Sheena Yap Chan, is an Asian woman who has experienced the undertones and unequivocal expectations of her cultural traditions and practices. Sheena, is the founder of the highly successful Podcast, The Tao of Self Confidence. After 3 seasons and 500 episodes it has been downloaded over 600,000 times and counting! She grew up in the Philippines and her family moved to Toronto when she was 7 years old, seeking a more fulfilling life with better opportunities. The horrific event of her aunty dying from falling off a cliff, changed everything for her. She sold everything, resigned from her job and set off to go travel the world and enjoy this ethereal thing we call life. Sheena confesses that she is not the most confident person in the world, although it’s difficult to believe when you listen to her speak and hear all the wisdom and advice she offers. She says that having a purpose which is bigger than yourself, is great for your self confidence because it’s for the greater good of something beyond you. Sheena definitely leads by example, shoots from the hip, speaks the truth and is as authentic as they come. We talk about many other things in the Podcast too, like human trafficking, the non-rights of Chinese women, why being fair skinned is important in Asian culture, lessons learned from her guests, the importance of representation, creating the life you want to live and learning to be happy in the present moment. Founder of Barbershop Books. School Teacher. Reading Identifier. Author. TED Speaker. Comedian. Crocheter. Cultural Competency Specialist. Social Entrepreneur. They say that laughter is the best medicine. We know that laughter is also contagious and that there is nothing better than an a good ‘ol belly laugh, which makes you roll on the floor! A good laugh gives a great stomach workout which 1,000 sit-ups could never accomplish. Laughter is best enjoyed together!! Our guest this week, Alvin Irby, is one seriously funny dude. He likes to make fun of real life situations and uses humour as a gateway to tackle serious issues. Alvin is an incredibly kind and sincere man, who is making a big impact on many young boys lives. Alvin, grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, with his siblings and they were all raised by their Mom. His Mom was a school teacher and his dad owned a Barbershop. The influence of these would only become apparent later on in his life. Alvin, enjoyed playing outdoors like most young kids do, he also loved a good game of Monopoly. However, the most enjoyment he found as a youngster came from an unlikely source, crocheting!! He wasn’t a big reader himself, but found it interesting while at school and one day asked his teacher to send him to the advanced reading class, so he could stem his boredom and learn more. To his surprise and dismay, he found out that most of the kids in this class were reading novels and writing book reports and…..they were white…… His business, Barbershop Books, provides a selection of 15 appropriately researched books in Barbershops, which cater for 4-8 year old, young black and other boys of colour, who frequent them. They also provide basic literacy training for all barbers and together their mission is to help these boys “identify themselves as readers”. Alvin is a man of many talents and has written his own children’s book called, Gross Greg. Alvin has also given a TED Talk, which was featured by TED and has been seen by over 850,000 people just on the TED website alone. To top it all off, he is a comedian who performs at well known establishments like Gotham Comedy Club in New York City. We had so much fun chatting with Alvin and trust this is going to give you some sore tummy muscles as a result of listening! RHP#030. Alex Hutchinson, Author of Endure and Editor of Sweat Science
Author. Endurance Expert. Canadian Athlete. PhD Physicist. Journalist. Sweat Science Editor. Ex-Olympic Trialist. Humble Human. Dad. Top Bloke. As humans, a combination of being curious, mischievous and competitive has made us push the limits of what we are capable of as a species. Our future certainly looks like it is going to be even more exciting, based on current research and experimentation. There is also the more philosophical side of capabilities, performance and understanding what a human beings mind and body, is truly capable of. Our guest this week, Alex Hutchinson, is no stranger to these sort of conundrums. It’s fair to say he has ample experience, expertise and knowledge when it comes to physics and human endurance. Alex, is one of the sharpest tools in the shed, probably one of the most humble people you will speak to and also one of the nicest. Alex, grew up in Toronto, Canada, with his folks and older brother. He lived a very typical Canadian upbringing, with plenty of time spent outdoors in nature and also playing tons of street hockey! When he was 15, he became interested in athletics and his big breakthrough came when he was 20 years old. After running the same times for almost 4 years, in the space of a few weeks, he miraculously improved his running time by 19 secs in the 1,500m event from 4:01 to 3:42. He qualified for the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Canadian Olympic trials. He studied to be a PhD Physicist at Cambridge University. He also did a stint as a postdoctoral researcher on behalf of the NSA, working on things like quantum computing and nano-electromechanics. At 28, Alex decided to re-train as a journalist and now writes for many established and well recognised publications. This chat is seriously interesting and traverses so many great topics. We cover, the endurance of being a parent, his battle with not being consumed by technology, dealing with injuries and setbacks, race tactics, the sub 2 hour marathon attempt and of course his book, Endure, with details around mindset, performance and endurance. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Alex Hutchinson, to be Ridiculously Human.
