RHP#053. Craig Haywood and Gareth Martin, One Year Anniversary with your Hosts
Podcasters. South Africans. Brothers From Other Mothers. Dr of Chiropractic. Executive Coach. Buddies. Human Connectors. Smilers. Jokers. Change Makers. Your Hosts. It’s not often in life, that you get to start a project with one of your best buddies. It is special creating something which is more meaningful than yourselves and is your own little way of giving back to the universe. It is an absolute privilege to be alive and living on this planet and it is each person’s responsibility and obligation to give back in a positive and meaningful way. Gone are the days, where the barriers to entry are too high for almost every conceivable job and business on the planet. Thank you internet and computers for giving us this amazing opportunity and capability to start a Podcast from our bedrooms, on opposite sides of the planet. Our journey started in a dingy, little corner bar in Madrid. We dropped the idea that starting a Podcast one day would be a cool thing to do. Like with so many things in life, we say stuff and then never do it. For us, timing was everything. We had both made significant changes in our lives, which allowed us the opportunity to begin the Podcast. We planned for 3 months before launching, meeting twice a week, to provide updates to the tasks we had each taken. Here we now are, 15 months later and one year into our Podcast. Close to 100 hours of interviews and countless hours of fantastically enjoyable graft under our belts. Today’s chat, is us sharing our experience of this incredible journey. We cover why we started and why we keep going, our random learnings and realisation, what it takes at a high level to produce one podcast episode and then where to from here for us and The Ridiculously Human Podcast. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did reminiscing. Let’s find out what it means for Gareth and Craig, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#052. Wanjira Mathai, Youth Leadership Developer, Conservationist, Kenyan Smiler, Storyteller and Chairwoman of Wangari Maathai Foundation
Passionate Youth Advocate. Conservationist. Optimist. Leader. Kenyan. Environmentalist. Smiler. Storyteller. Tree Lover. African Lady. Movement Creator. Chairwoman of the Wangari Maathai Foundation. The world, it would seem, is on a precipice when it comes to politics and the environment. It’s unfortunate how the two go hand in hand and that generally, it is up to the outliers and individuals to stand up and fight for protecting our environment. Our guest this week, Wanjira Mathai, knows better than anyone, the importance of fighting for what you believe in. Her mother, Wangari Maathai, was the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate of 2004, for her involvement in protecting and fighting for our environment and for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace. Wanjira was born in Nairobi, Kenya. Her parents divorced when she was young but she only recalls good memories of growing up between two households. She spent a lot of time on the farmland of her Grandparents and that’s where she built a connection with nature early on in her life. As youngsters, her Mom would always empower her and her brother by allowing them to explain themselves, even when they disagreed with their elders, like teachers. Wanjira’s mother, Wangari, was an exceptional lady indeed and deserves a great introduction. Wangari started the Green Belt Movement in 1977. She always fought against the establishment in the best interests of the environment and as a result, cultivated a movement of environmental consciousness and awareness. She was extremely generous and selfless in her life, she had no need for material possessions and she was also wickedly funny too. The Billion Tree Campaign was another successful movement which she started. Wanjira is now a sharing her wisdom and knowledge with the aim of creating a better future. She has worked at the intersection of environment, energy and climate change her whole life. She is continuing her mother's legacy to inspire young people and future leaders towards positive mindsets, through character building and personal leadership programs run by the Wangari Maathai Foundation. In the Podcast, we covered a lot of ground and spoke about many fascinating topics, including: Felix, the Young German activist responsible for the Trillion Tree Campaign, the importance of soil and why we need to protect it, the growth and restoration of forests around the world, the importance of green spaces within cities and of course youth development in Kenya. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Wanjira Mathai, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#051. Devin Lester, Professional Photographer, Dream Chaser, Technical Artist, Realist, Black Belt Karate and Founder of DLP
Professional Photographer. Dream Chaser. Technical Artist. Realist. Black Belt Karate. Founder of DLP. ex-Actuary. Dad and Loving Husband. Smiler. Awesome Buddy. Fear of the unknown is something which grips almost every single person. It is probably the sole reason why most people never end up fulfilling their dreams and do something they are passionate about. The graveyard of unfulfilled lives and unrealised dreams is an extremely sad place. Our guest this week, Devin Lester, is somebody who took charge of his life and career after many years of talking about wanting a change. Quitting his successful and very well paid job as an Actuary, to go and do something which served his soul and passion more, is what he wanted and needed to do. Devin was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He comes from a great family, with an awesome bond and strong values. That’s something which he has carried on with his family and all the friendships he has too. Devin grew up practising Karate and achieved his black belt. The values and skills he learnt had an influence on how he dealt with many other parts of his life. He was such an organised and professional guy at school and was certainly one of the smartest guys in his grade. There was a real creative side to him too. Devin is a real unsung hero and what our Podcast is all about. He is like every single one of us, just a normal person, with dreams and desires, who did his time going through the motions and routines of life. A few years after starting his corporate gig as an Actuary, he started talking about his dreams of owning a wine farm and doing something different. Devin would also always carry a camera with him and would take pictures at social events. Like with everything else he does, he happened to be really good at photography. He would put in many hours after work and on weekends building his side business. Eventually after a couple of years, what began as a side job, turned into a full time career. Having two kids and a wife, who was also transitioning her career, took a lot of planning, good communication and understanding. This is Devin telling us his journey with some practical bits of knowledge and advice that helped him along the way. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#050. Darin Olien, The Superfood Hunter, Author, Vegan, Hydration Expert. Founder of Superlife and Barukas
Superfood Hunter. Conservationist. Jacked Vegan. Hydration Expert. Author. Founder of Superlife. Supplementation Formulator. Surfer. Misfit Member. Ethically Astute. Awesome Dude. It is said that there are up to 5.5 million undiscovered species, both plants and animals, on earth. We are each responsible to start becoming mini-conservationists in our own way, to protect the land we live on, for the benefits of ourselves and the entire ecosystem we live in. Our guest this week, Darin Olien, is a man on a mission to help us all achieve our optimal health. Darin has dedicated much of his life to discovering the undiscovered. He has explored many parts of our beautiful habitats, met indigenous tribes, put himself in danger and ventured into the unknown. Darin was born in Minnesota, USA. He was born 2 months premature and only given a 50% chance of living. He had a tough childhood too, partly because his Dad was an alcoholic, until Darin was 4 years old. A certain accidental incident, which involved Darin slicing open his chin on empty beer bottles, led his Dad to sober up. A football injury in college really forced Darin to start experimenting with more natural ways of healing, compared with what western medicine was offering him. In 2005, his Dad started drinking again after 30 years of being sober, it was tragically fatal. A big breakthrough came when Darin was asked to design and create a supplement for the brand, Beachbody. He spent a few years formulating the best and most natural supplement he could, called Shakeology. To this day, it is still their best seller. Darin has only grown ever since then. He is now recognised as an authority on nutrition, hydration and the power of foods and herbs. His latest project which is hugely inspiring, is a business called Barukas, which farms Baru nuts. Darin is helping the local indigenous communities of Brazil, to create a better life for themselves through the farming of these nuts. The way he goes about business is with the greatest integrity and respect, which is another reason we hold this man in such high regard. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#049. Hannah Phillips - Homeschooler, Artist, Photographer, Entrepreneur. Founder of HP Media and Piper Creative
Homeschooled. Artist. Photographer. Entrepreneur. Founder of HP Media and Piper Creative. Coffee Addict. Creator. College Opt-Out. Harry Potter Nerd. Wannabe Author. Leader. Homeschooling is something which is starting to gain more momentum. However, it is still maybe considered slightly hippy and left field. The stark reality, is that every kid that we have ever met who has been homeschooled, is wise and mature beyond their years. If you closed your eyes, you’d have difficulty realising that you are talking to someone so young with the intelligent conversations they are able to hold. Hannah Phillips, was homeschooled from Kindergarten to Seventh Grade with her 3 younger siblings. Who she is today and the outlook she has on life, she attributes to her parents for homeschooling her. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a mere 21 years ago, she has blossomed into a charming, smart and extremely inspiring young lady. Homeschooling allowed Hannah to grow up with the mindset of being extremely comfortable with unconventional paths. It felt normal to her. She spent two hours a day doing school work and then she was also able to spend the rest of her hours trying new things. She learned what she wanted to learn and was able to explore her passions. That’s when and how she developed her love for art and being creative. Hannah got into graphic design and photography when she was 10 years old, she also started a blog and business! She started to design logos for her friends and was eventually able to charge people $5 a pop! In Grade Eight Hannah went back to school, to an art school. She says that going back to school was very bizarre. Her bus ride was about an hour and a half each way, so her first introduction was three hours commuting on a bus everyday! Hannah’s tertiary education was also ‘non-conventional’. She attended an online “Uni’ called Praxis. In Hannah’s mind, quite rightly, this is the future of education after high school. It’s an academically infused apprenticeship and entrepreneurship program. The curriculum can be defined as a professional, rigorous, 6 month boot camp. Hannah started her second business before she was 20 years old and now, together with her co-founder, they have a thriving little enterprise which focuses on helping people grow their businesses through social media. We can only get excited if this is what the youth of our future are going to be like! We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#048. Fei Wu, Podcast Host, People Connector, Entrepreneur, Freelance Digital Marketer. Founder of FeisWorld
Podcast Host. Chinese. Go-Getter. Digital Marketer. Taekwondo Black Belt. Zumba Dancer. Project Manager. People Connector. Smiler. Entrepreneur. Mastermind Host. Being part of a tribe is important and it is human nature to seek out tribes. Tribes can be ethnic, political, religious, musical, you name it. We feel comfortable, safe and supported when we are with our tribe. Thanks to technology we can find and connect with our tribes much easier these days. Our guest this week, Fei Wu, was part of a big tribe...China, before she embarked on her journey at 17 years old. She left home on an International High School Program to the United States. Armed with her $3,000, she put on her brave boots and set off for pastures new. Fei was born in Beijing, China, her mom a renowned artist and her father a military man. Growing up on a military base, as well as having access to the Forbidden City, meant that she lived a colourful and interesting childhood. Fei’s life in the US flourished and her knack and natural way of connecting with people and creating tribes didn’t take long to begin. However, she found the most difficult part was how to be Chinese in America and how to integrate as seamlessly as possible into a new culture. Fei used her intelligence to easily ace a Computer Science and Mathematics degree and began her climb up the corporate ladder. She knew that it was never going to be a lifetime commitment. She also knew at 26 years old, that she had to wait 5 years, before she could get her green card, so that she could venture off and be her own lady boss. These days, Fei now resides in Boston, working as a digital marketing freelancer and project manager. She is also the host of FeisWorld Podcast, where she celebrates the stories of unsung heroes and self-made artists. As an immigrant living in the US, she feels a sense of pride being Chinese and feels more connected to her roots than ever before. Fei is an inspiring young lady whose passion for life is infectious. We cover many interesting topics in this conversation such as; Chinese academic pressures, being seventeen in a new country, differences in schooling systems, how to run a mastermind group, business in China, entrepreneurial challenges and Fei’s upcoming documentary. RHP#047. Chantel Dartnall, World Number 1 Female Chef 2017, Botanical Food Artist, Owner of Mosaic Restaurant and Orient Hotel
World's Best Female Chef. Food Artist. Nature Lover. Gastronomy Master. Best South African Chef Overall. Smiler. Traveller. Lady Leader. Charmer. One thing in life we can probably almost all agree on, is that we love food and love to eat. The world of gastronomy is rapidly evolving. When you enter world class restaurants, you expect all of your senses to be mesmerised, lifted and touched. People are there for the full experience and not just to fill their stomachs! It’s not often in life that you get to chat to someone who is literally the best in the world at something! Chantel Dartnall has been named, Best Lady Chef In the World 2017. When you see her culinary delights you will be totally blown away. It’s difficult to imagine how she creates some of these dishes, as they literally look like pieces of sculptured art! Chantel was born in Elandsfontein, South Africa, where she grew up on their family farm. Nature has always been something which is in her bones and it’s somewhere she loves to escape and reconnect to. From an early age she was intrigued by food and her great great grandfather was actually a chef for the Royal Family. At the age of 14, she decided to become a vegetarian. Her mother said that she needed to learn how to cook her own meals because she was not going to cook vegetarian meals especially for her!! It drove her to start her own vegetable garden and that’s when she began to understand and explore the use of flowers and herbs. The philosophy behind the dishes at her restaurant, Restaurant Mosaic, revolve around portraying botanical stories. In her dishes, Chantel tries to recreate scenes from her life that she has experienced, by using various textures, aromas and flavours. One of the key things about the world famous, Restaurant Mosaic and Orient Hotel, is that almost every employee has been with them from the start and has been upskilled - from gardener to award winning Sommelier, from cleaning lady to Head Maître'd. Her energy, passion and drive to help those around her is what has helped build a formidable team. As South Africans we are super proud to have had the honour of speaking with her and we hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#046. Rick Clemons, Bold Move Expert, Host of Life (Un)Closeted Podcast, Status Quo Disruptor, Gay Bear
Bold Move Expert. Podcast Host. (Un)Closeted Human. Status Quo Disruptor. Teddy Bear. Keynote Speaker. Author. Closet Deconstructor. Confidence Creator. Coach. If we are 100% honest with ourselves, there are one or two secrets which we will all probably take to the grave with us. Personal secrets can eat you up and manifest into something rather big and nasty. For our guest this week, Rick Clemons, he kept a big secret for a large part of his life. You see, Rick tried to tell his secret once but those who heard him, his parents, were not ready to believe him and were themselves confused and ashamed of who their son was. Rick was born in Loveland, Colorado. Together with his folks and brother, they moved around a lot as a family. He was raised as a Seventh-day Adventist, but his family was a sort of “rebel” in the sense that they were more flexible in their practice. He was a musical little guy and one of his most vivid memories was having a crush on his piano teacher’s husband… Rick was molested by an older family member when he was between the ages of 5 to 7 years old. Even though it is extremely sad and disgraceful what happened to him, he recalls it as being a sexual awakening. At 19 years old, he finally came out the closet and announced he was gay. Only to be told it was against their religious beliefs and that he needed to see somebody to help him sort it out. He reclused back to his closet. Rick put his dirty little secret on a shelf and immersed himself in work and other distractions…..like getting married for 13 years….to a lady. He also fathered two beautiful daughters while married. His sexual desires were always fulfilled both in and out of matrimony. After an encounter on a work trip to the UK, with a charming Englishman whom he met in a gay bar, he realised it was time to expose the truth. Back in the US, he drove from the airport back home and considered ending his life by driving under a truck, but destiny wasn’t going to let him do it. He told his wife and left home that evening…. These days, Rick is a happily married to his husband. He is also someone who helps others make bold moves in their lives too. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#045. Alice Zaslavsky, Australian Masterchef Alumna, Best Selling Author and Founder of Alice in Frames
Australian Masterchef Alumna. Food Nerd. Jewish Immigrant. Teacher. Edutainer. Author. TV Presenter. Food Judge. Culinary Conversationalist. Smiler. Realist. Business Woman. So many things have occurred in our recent history. It was only in 1991, when the dissolution of the USSR took place. The dissolution resulted in the forming of 15 independent republics, one of those being Georgia. 25 years ago, Alice Zaslavsky and her family got on an aeroplane, fleeing Tbilisi, Georgia, because luck and hope had run out for them. It was that desperate, that her parents only had enough money for them to fly to Singapore and from there they were going to borrow some money from friends and family, to carry on their journey and get to Australia. They were armed with only books and records. Alice has fond memories of her childhood in Tbilisi. Food was always a big part of her life and her love of food was influenced by family feasts and weekend trips to her grandfather’s ‘Dacha’. Boris, her Grandfather, taught her to toast sunflower seeds, which they would eat together while he would pick his fruit to use for his preserves. Arriving in Australia at 7 years old, with very little belongings and not a word of English, was to be the start of an epic journey. Her folks soon found jobs and moved to Melbourne. They travelled a lot for work and it was cheaper for them to take her with, than to hire babysitters. So she enjoyed an adventurous childhood. In 2012, Alice decided to enter Masterchef Australia and as a result had to forego her career as a deputy head teacher, but it was a risk she was willing to take. Her experience on Masterchef provided her with the trajectory she needed to put in motion the visualisations of her future career and business. These days, Alice is literally flying. ‘Alice in Frames’, as she is endearingly known, finds it liberating teaching kids the importance of food, how to cook and why to eat your veggies. She has a best selling food book, TV shows and a radio show and is constantly evolving as an edutainer in the food space. RHP#044. Tony Moze, Edutainer, Entrepreneur, Passion Promoter and The Rhyming Book Reviewer
Edutainer. Passion Promoter. Bookworm. Rapper. Musician. Army Veteran. Entrepreneur. Educationalist. Leader. Innovator. Eyelash King. Top Bloke. Isn’t it nice to be surprised by the passion, energy and optimism people can bring with them when connecting with others. It really is an awesome trait and skill to have, to be able to lift a crowd, simply by the way you interact with them. Our guest this week, Tony Moze, is one of those humans who has lived such a varied and eventful life. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, to his Sudanese Mom and Dominican Dad. His Latino flare and African beat are what makes this man such an exciting human melting pot! Tony had a passion for reading and was musically trained from 9 years old. At 14, he moved to Connecticut with his Mom, where he joined a rap group. That’s when his passion for rapping and hip hop really took off. At 18, he joined the US Army as a Reservist. In 2002, he received a call while at a party, to tell him to pack his gear because he was required to go to war. By 2003 he was trained up and left for Kuwait. He spent 9 months driving oil tankers during the Iraq War. Tony’s love for psychology and people extended to his occupation, where he worked as a mental health worker for almost 10 years. He had a daughter he wasn’t prepared for during that time, with a lady he wasn’t destined to be with. It was on a trip to Norway when he decided it was time to change his life and differentiate himself. He set-up the Rhyming Book Reviewer, which gave him the opportunity to mix his passions of rap, reading and music. These days you can find Tony specialising his craft as an Edutainer! We manage to explore many interesting topics in this conversation, dealing with divorce, being bullied and ostracised, mental health issues, serving your country, rapping your way around the world, vulnerability, following your passion and getting your life back on track. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Tony Moze, to be Ridiculously Human.
