RHP#059. Dr Heather McKee, Behaviour Change Specialist, Habit Coach, Podcast Host, Research Geek, PhD in Weightloss Psychology

Behaviour Change Specialist. Habit Coach. Research Geek. Podcast Host. PhD in Weightloss Psychology. Irish Las. Smiler. Wellness Consultant. The success of most people is because of consistency, perseverance, self-awareness and planning. An overarching theme to all of these, is habits. Good habits, specifically, are what contribute to overall wellness and success. Habits need to be learned and ingrained in us through repetition. Our guest this week, Dr Heather McKee, is a lady who knows all too well about the importance of habits and all the science surrounding them too. Heather was born in Dublin, Ireland. Both of her parents were teachers who taught at Universities. Her brother also chose to be a teacher. So teaching runs thickly through their Irish family blood. She grew up in a time when Ireland was going through a tough and violent period politically. Fortunately, their family came out pretty much unscathed, although they were always accustomed to border searches and similar unnerving events. Heather studied Sports Science at a University in Dublin, before shifting across the pond to do her Masters and then a PhD in Weightloss Psychology to top it all off! Her research and articles were picked up and published internationally in leading academic journals and world media publications. This was one of the catalysts for her founding her consultancy and coaching business. As you may have guessed, Heather is an expert in her field, although she prefers to be called a guide. We had the privilege of picking her brain on all things related to habits, weight maintenance and human behaviour and psychology around that. Her overarching philosophy in building and maintaining good habits, is to make sure that they are fun to do! Something which we can all subscribe to. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Heather McKee, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#058. Seth Godin, Bestselling Author, Speaker, Marketing Guru, Teacher

Blogger. Speaker. Marketing Guru. Ruckus Maker. Bestselling Author. Ringleader. Podcaster. Analogy King. Entrepreneur. Teacher.   The internet has certainly changed the world, which has resulted in new types of leaders emerging and also for a new type of leadership. There are smaller tribes of people forming and these people need their own leaders. Tribes are becoming more niche and require a specific type of ringleader. The beauty of the world now, is that we can all find each other. Our guest this week, Seth Godin, is someone who knows this all too well. Which is why he is leading us and encouraging us as entrepreneurs, business people and marketers to find and connect with our minimum viable audience. Seth is the author of 18 bestselling books that have been translated into more than 35 languages. He was also inducted into the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Marketing Hall of Fame in 2018. His daily blog is one of the most popular in the world. He started it over 20 years ago and has now published over 7,300 posts. It is a testament to his philosophy of always showing up. Most of all, Seth, is a teacher. He wants people to realise their potential within themselves and that now the game has changed. We don’t need to be working for large corporates, we can work for ourselves, on work that matters. Seth is a private man and very conscious of the message he wants to spread in this world and also the value he intends on bringing. He grew up in a household where his parents promoted and encouraged change. He trained as an engineer and it didn’t matter what he did, everything kept coming back to change. Fear is something which grips all of us and we have a lot to thank for what he calls, the lizard brain. When he gets fearful of doing something, it’s because the narrator in his head knows he is onto something good. So he will listen to it by doing the exact opposite!! This conversation is mostly about his latest book, This Is Marketing. As he explains, even after writing 18 previous bestsellers, he had no choice but to write another. The market wanted and needed it, so he provided it. You can do work that matters for people who care. This book shows you the way. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#057. Sophie Sabbage, Bestselling Author, Keynote Speaker, Patient Activist, Transformational Facilitator, Cancer Convalescent

Bestselling Author. Keynote Speaker. Teacher. Patient Activist. Transformational Facilitator. Cancer Convalescent. Authenticity Pacesetter. Sage. Luminary. Have you ever stopped and had a think about your future and what it really means? Have you ever considered the thought that all living beings are terminal? There is not one person, one animal, or one living cell, which is going to survive eternally…. Our guest this week, Sophie Sabbage, is somebody who knows all too well how delicate and precious life is. Absolutely everything in her life was perfect. She ran a successful business, she was financially liquid, she was making a positive impact on other people’s lives, she was married to the man of her dreams, she had a young daughter and her health seemed fine too. Until she had a sharp pain in her back. That’s when her life would change forever. Sophie grew up partly in London and partly in Wales. Her father was a Conservative Welsh MP, so she grew up in a political context and was privileged in a way. Growing up in that environment she saw a lot of entitlement and says that even from a young age, she saw it as unfair. An incident which involved a bomb being planted in their family home, made her start questioning life and how much she did and didn’t know. Sophie was diagnosed with late-stage ‘incurable’ metastasizing lung cancer in October 2014, at the age of 48. She was wracked with confusion and fear, after hearing she would likely be dead within 4 months. Fortunately, there were some turning points which shifted her thinking and trajectory. Sophie started a blog three months into treatment, which helped a childhood dream of writing a book eventually materialise. Within five months, the tumours had gone and the cancer in her lungs had reduced by 70%. Her book, The Cancer Whisperer, was an instant bestseller. It chronicles Sophie's extraordinary relationship with cancer. She offers a radically different way of relating to this disease both mentally and practically. Tragedy struck again shortly after publishing her book, when they found 27 tumours in her brain. There was a rare complication and she became more sick than ever. In June 2018, she finished her most recent book, Lifeshocks: And how to love them. If you have ever dealt with tough times in your life, pondered your own mortality or know someone with cancer, then we invite you to listen to this touching conversation. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Sophie Sabbage, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#056. Brianna and Kristine Tesauro, Heroes, Sassy Sisters, Adventure Seekers, Cancer Survivor, Founders of Catch Some Air

Brianna and Kristine Tesauro. Heroes. Sassy Sisters. Smilers. Positivity Creators. Living Legends. Adventure Seekers. Cancer Survivors. Founders of Catch Some Air. Most people in the world are going through life as if they are going to be alive forever. Sadly, the truth is, that all of us are terminal. We forget to take notice of the small things in life, those fleeting moments, those little reminders, the sunsets, the sunrises, the smile from a passing stranger. Our guests this week, Brianna and Kristine Tesauro, are the most delightful, happy and smiley sisters you will meet. These girls suffered serious family heartache when their brother died at a young age from Lymphoma. Brianna and Kristine were born in Illinois, just outside of Chicago. Growing up was certainly fun and entertaining…..having a family of 8 siblings, who were all homeschooled, will do that! From an early age, they were involved in the community by helping out their Dad, who was a pastor. It set the foundation of their core values for later in life. Kristine, by chance, was persuaded by her roommate to go and get a health check-up on the 1st April 2015. After a blood test, she was admitted to ER and her life would change forever. She had acute lymphocytic Leukaemia and if she was tested just 2 days later, then she may not be here today to tell us her story… That’s when the heroics and deep sibling connection and love from Brianna really kicked in. She put her life on hold and vouched to be with Kristine every step of the way, through her treatment and recovery. Brianna said, that if it was her last day, week, or year with Kristine, she was going to make it their best time together and do whatever she could. The treatment and chemotherapy were the hardest, most painful and intense times Kristine has ever had to endure. There were days when she felt that giving up would be the easier option… Something magical happened in the hospital. Thanks to Kristine’s artistic streak through times of boredom, she started doodling on white t-shirts with a black marker and that's how their business and charity called, Catch Some Air, was created. These days, Catch Some Air, is a clothing brand, proudly marketed as, ‘The Happiest Clothing Line On Earth’, which as per their strapline, ‘Helps kids with cancer stay happy when they feel crappy’. Their movement supports kids with cancer, by providing them with cool outings, companionship and with cool t-shirts of course! We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#055. Helen Jukes, Amateur Urban Apiarist, Writer, Beekeeper, Writing Tutor, Author of A Honey Bee Heart has Five Openings

One of the most important things in life is to understand the connection between animals and humans. At the end of the day, we are one and the same, just different sorts of animals. We rely on a flourishing and systematic ecosystem, for us to all thrive and co-exist. Our guest this week, Helen Jukes, knows all too well about the importance of nature, connection and specifically bees. Helen has much to thank for the lessons these small organisms have taught her in life. Helen grew up in the beautiful Ullesthorpe, England. It’s hard to grow up there and not love the outdoors, something she enjoyed greatly. After studying psychology, in 2006, she began an MA in Postcolonial studies at Goldsmiths, London. Upon moving to London, a friend introduced her to urban beekeeping. He had 50 hives across London. For Helen, it was a great escape from her stressful office job to spend her weekends opening up these hives and learning about these small flying insects. Her life was somewhat chaotic, in that it was unstable and she moved around jobs a fair bit. It was a group of friends who bought her a beehive starter kit, that set her on a new trajectory. The love affair and fascination had only just begun. Helen spent endless hours researching bees, speaking with her fellow beekeeping friends and of course, learning ‘on the job’ by caring for her hive. She began documenting and writing down everything she was learning about her bees. These writings initiated her authoring a book called, A Honey Bee Heart has Five Openings. The lessons these beautifully crafted creatures have taught her are deeper than something cerebral. The bees started connecting up different things she had been thinking about a lot in her life like, responsibility, care and what home is. They ultimately helped her find love too. This is a magical conversation which we can all learn so much from. It’s brimming with fascinating and interesting facts about bees. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#053. Craig Haywood and Gareth Martin, One Year Anniversary with your Hosts

Podcasters. South Africans. Brothers From Other Mothers. Dr of Chiropractic. Executive Coach. Buddies. Human Connectors. Smilers. Jokers. Change Makers. Your Hosts. It’s not often in life, that you get to start a project with one of your best buddies. It is special creating something which is more meaningful than yourselves and is your own little way of giving back to the universe. It is an absolute privilege to be alive and living on this planet and it is each person’s responsibility and obligation to give back in a positive and meaningful way. Gone are the days, where the barriers to entry are too high for almost every conceivable job and business on the planet. Thank you internet and computers for giving us this amazing opportunity and capability to start a Podcast from our bedrooms, on opposite sides of the planet. Our journey started in a dingy, little corner bar in Madrid. We dropped the idea that starting a Podcast one day would be a cool thing to do. Like with so many things in life, we say stuff and then never do it. For us, timing was everything. We had both made significant changes in our lives, which allowed us the opportunity to begin the Podcast. We planned for 3 months before launching, meeting twice a week, to provide updates to the tasks we had each taken. Here we now are, 15 months later and one year into our Podcast. Close to 100 hours of interviews and countless hours of fantastically enjoyable graft under our belts. Today’s chat, is us sharing our experience of this incredible journey. We cover why we started and why we keep going, our random learnings and realisation, what it takes at a high level to produce one podcast episode and then where to from here for us and The Ridiculously Human Podcast. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did reminiscing. Let’s find out what it means for Gareth and Craig, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#052. Wanjira Mathai, Youth Leadership Developer, Conservationist, Kenyan Smiler, Storyteller and Chairwoman of Wangari Maathai Foundation

Passionate Youth Advocate. Conservationist. Optimist. Leader. Kenyan. Environmentalist. Smiler. Storyteller. Tree Lover. African Lady. Movement Creator. Chairwoman of the Wangari Maathai Foundation. The world, it would seem, is on a precipice when it comes to politics and the environment. It’s unfortunate how the two go hand in hand and that generally, it is up to the outliers and individuals to stand up and fight for protecting our environment. Our guest this week, Wanjira Mathai, knows better than anyone, the importance of fighting for what you believe in. Her mother, Wangari Maathai, was the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate of 2004, for her involvement in protecting and fighting for our environment and for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace. Wanjira was born in Nairobi, Kenya. Her parents divorced when she was young but she only recalls good memories of growing up between two households. She spent a lot of time on the farmland of her Grandparents and that’s where she built a connection with nature early on in her life. As youngsters, her Mom would always empower her and her brother by allowing them to explain themselves, even when they disagreed with their elders, like teachers. Wanjira’s mother, Wangari, was an exceptional lady indeed and deserves a great introduction. Wangari started the Green Belt Movement in 1977. She always fought against the establishment in the best interests of the environment and as a result, cultivated a movement of environmental consciousness and awareness. She was extremely generous and selfless in her life, she had no need for material possessions and she was also wickedly funny too. The Billion Tree Campaign was another successful movement which she started. Wanjira is now a sharing her wisdom and knowledge with the aim of creating a better future. She has worked at the intersection of environment, energy and climate change her whole life. She is continuing her mother's legacy to inspire young people and future leaders towards positive mindsets, through character building and personal leadership programs run by the Wangari Maathai Foundation. In the Podcast, we covered a lot of ground and spoke about many fascinating topics, including: Felix, the Young German activist responsible for the Trillion Tree Campaign, the importance of soil and why we need to protect it, the growth and restoration of forests around the world, the importance of green spaces within cities and of course youth development in Kenya. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Wanjira Mathai, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#051. Devin Lester, Professional Photographer, Dream Chaser, Technical Artist, Realist, Black Belt Karate and Founder of DLP

Professional Photographer. Dream Chaser. Technical Artist. Realist. Black Belt Karate. Founder of DLP. ex-Actuary. Dad and Loving Husband. Smiler. Awesome Buddy. Fear of the unknown is something which grips almost every single person. It is probably the sole reason why most people never end up fulfilling their dreams and do something they are passionate about. The graveyard of unfulfilled lives and unrealised dreams is an extremely sad place. Our guest this week, Devin Lester, is somebody who took charge of his life and career after many years of talking about wanting a change. Quitting his successful and very well paid job as an Actuary, to go and do something which served his soul and passion more, is what he wanted and needed to do. Devin was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He comes from a great family, with an awesome bond and strong values. That’s something which he has carried on with his family and all the friendships he has too. Devin grew up practising Karate and achieved his black belt. The values and skills he learnt had an influence on how he dealt with many other parts of his life. He was such an organised and professional guy at school and was certainly one of the smartest guys in his grade. There was a real creative side to him too. Devin is a real unsung hero and what our Podcast is all about. He is like every single one of us, just a normal person, with dreams and desires, who did his time going through the motions and routines of life. A few years after starting his corporate gig as an Actuary, he started talking about his dreams of owning a wine farm and doing something different. Devin would also always carry a camera with him and would take pictures at social events. Like with everything else he does, he happened to be really good at photography. He would put in many hours after work and on weekends building his side business. Eventually after a couple of years, what began as a side job, turned into a full time career. Having two kids and a wife, who was also transitioning her career, took a lot of planning, good communication and understanding. This is Devin telling us his journey with some practical bits of knowledge and advice that helped him along the way. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#050. Darin Olien, The Superfood Hunter, Author, Vegan, Hydration Expert. Founder of Superlife and Barukas

Superfood Hunter. Conservationist. Jacked Vegan. Hydration Expert. Author. Founder of Superlife. Supplementation Formulator. Surfer. Misfit Member. Ethically Astute. Awesome Dude. It is said that there are up to 5.5 million undiscovered species, both plants and animals, on earth. We are each responsible to start becoming mini-conservationists in our own way, to protect the land we live on, for the benefits of ourselves and the entire ecosystem we live in. Our guest this week, Darin Olien, is a man on a mission to help us all achieve our optimal health. Darin has dedicated much of his life to discovering the undiscovered. He has explored many parts of our beautiful habitats, met indigenous tribes, put himself in danger and ventured into the unknown. Darin was born in Minnesota, USA. He was born 2 months premature and only given a 50% chance of living. He had a tough childhood too, partly because his Dad was an alcoholic, until Darin was 4 years old. A certain accidental incident, which involved Darin slicing open his chin on empty beer bottles, led his Dad to sober up. A football injury in college really forced Darin to start experimenting with more natural ways of healing, compared with what western medicine was offering him. In 2005, his Dad started drinking again after 30 years of being sober, it was tragically fatal. A big breakthrough came when Darin was asked to design and create a supplement for the brand, Beachbody. He spent a few years formulating the best and most natural supplement he could, called Shakeology. To this day, it is still their best seller. Darin has only grown ever since then. He is now recognised as an authority on nutrition, hydration and the power of foods and herbs. His latest project which is hugely inspiring, is a business called Barukas, which farms Baru nuts. Darin is helping the local indigenous communities of Brazil, to create a better life for themselves through the farming of these nuts. The way he goes about business is with the greatest integrity and respect, which is another reason we hold this man in such high regard. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Darin Olien, to be Ridiculously Human.
