RHP#063. Travis Kuhn, Professional Bartender, Smiler, Entrepreneur, Mixologist, Founder of The Perfect Serve

Professional Bartender. Smiler. Mixologist. Entrepreneur. Joburg Boetjie. Dad. Entertainer. Cocktail Aficianado. Flair Specialist. Founder of The Perfect Serve. It takes a special type of human to work in the hospitality industry. When people are out having fun, you are there to serve them. When you want to have fun, others are working. When your clientele are asleep, you are awake. When they are awake, you are asleep. Our guest this week, Travis Kuhn, was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Life got off to a bit of a delicate start because he contracted a bone infection called, Osteomyelitis. It was something which the doctors didn’t know too much about at the time. Fortunately, there is no adverse long-term damage. Travis enjoyed a good, yet challenging upbringing. Schools in South Africa can be a rough place for young kids, but he was fortunate to have an older brother who was extremely doting and protective of him. After school, he became interested in being a bartender, because his brother was working in a cocktail bar which looked like a helluva lot more fun! Travis practised every day on his own watching YouTube videos. He became exceedingly good and accomplished at it. He really made a name for himself within the industry and won pretty much every competition which he entered in his early days. He also got to travel the world by competing in competitions. It was a time for him to share ideas with and learn from other bartenders from around the world. In 2018, at 38 years old, as a supposedly ‘post-peak’ bartender, Trav had his greatest achievement yet. He came 5th in the World Class Club Bartending Championships. To give that some context, this is a competition which is entered by 10,000 people, from 60 countries globally. It is the Wimbledon, of Bartending! There are a ton of interesting things which we discuss in this Podcast conversation, to mention a few; South African schooling, sibling connection, the challenges of having a family and being a professional bartender, the art and science of mixology, being recognised for what you do, and of course his latest achievement at the World Class Club and an in-depth description of what it entailed. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Travis Kuhn, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#062. Emily Penn, Earth Changer, Ocean Conservationist, Artist, Plastic researcher and Assailant, Founder of Running eXXpedition

Earth Changer. Ocean Conservationist. Artist. Plastic Researcher and Assailant. Skipper. Ocean Advocate. Teacher. Speaker. Smiler. Leader. Founder of Running eXXpedition Plastic has had and still does have great uses in modern society. However, it is also a not-so-silent killer. Synthetic plastics’ origin, dates back to the early 1900s and then it became really popular in the 1960s. In the space of 60 years we, as the human race, have managed to have a detrimental impact on the environment using plastic alone. Our guest this week, Emily Penn, is a lady who understands the consequences of plastic usage and it’s overconsumption, more than most people in this world. It’s when you see and experience things first hand, that you truly begin to understand the vast, negative footprint which plastic is having on the earth. Emily was born in Swansea and grew up in Penarth, South Wales. Her parents met on a sailing boat, which was ultimately some sort of destiny for her. From a young age, she was a bit of a water baby. By the age of 14, she earned a place in the Welsh Sailing Squad. Her true passion was art and design. She says that she didn’t have a grand plan in life, there was no map to follow, she was simply looking for the sign-posts along the way. One of those sign-posts led her to study Architecture. Little did she know where the future sign-posts would lead her... Once she had completed her degree, she managed to hook herself up with an architectural job in Australia...and what better way to get there than to hitchhike from the U.K? She liked the idea of ‘travelling slowly’, something she had learned earlier in her life….! While researching her hitchhiking adventure, she discovered a vessel which could help her for part of the journey. She rocked up for a weekend of orientation in Brighton, to see if she was the right fit, to be a crew member on the alien looking ocean vessel called, Earthrace. She didn’t quite expect to only return 925 days later! During this voyage, was her greatest awakening and ‘discovery’ of all --> plastic pollution. She saw how it was scattered all over our oceans and later discovered how it had infiltrated itself into each of our bodies. Since then she has lived on islands, learnt new languages, set-up research businesses, sailed the oceans of the world numerous times, and become a symbolic figure for our fight against plastic consumption. It’s going to take a billion micro-habits to undo all the plastic damage which exists around the world today. It all starts with us. We owe it to our current and future generations to each take responsibility in reducing our plastic and chemical footprint. Let Emily’s journey and story be a motivating reason for you to begin. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Emily Penn, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#061. Robert Bowden, Chocolatier, Gay Cowboy, Professional Horse Trainer, Theatrical Aficionado, Farm Boy and Founder of Vivere Chocolates

Chocolatier. Gay. Cowboy. Professional Horse Trainer. Theatrical Aficionado. Farm Boy. Cornbread Lover. Napper. Brogi. Traveller. Founder of Vivere Chocolates Everything which happens between life and death is what you make of it, some of it by choice and some of it by destiny. Many times during your life, events will not make much sense at the time. However, those moments will re-visit you, later on, to remind you why they happened. Robert Bowden, is a man who understands this all too well. He learnt many lessons and skills while growing up on a farm and learning from his grandparents, his surrounding environment and his freedom to explore. Robert, was born in Duncanville, Alabama, the deep south of the U.S. On paper, you would say that he had his deck of cards stacked against him by being a theatrical, black, gay, farm boy. However, that is something which never crossed his mind while growing up. His Grandmother had three large fields, which she called her gardens, and they provided enough food to feed the four immediate households. Robert started raising chickens at the age of 5 and selling eggs became his first business. By the time he was 8 years old, he had well over 200 chickens and had names for them all too! Selling the eggs for 75 cents a dozen, made him a fairly affluent 8 year old :) Robert was a rough and tumble kid, who loved to ride horses and sing at the top of his lungs. At age 12, he realised that he liked boys. In College, he decided it was time to tell his folks. It was a real non-event, as the response was pretty much “Is this supposed to be news son?!” So Robert just skipped off and went back to feeding his horses. A successful career which spanned 20 years of being a professional horse trainer, came to a bit of an abrupt end, when circumstances in the horse training industry made it implausible for him to continue, even though it was something he loved. These days, Robert is the Founder of Vivere Chocolates, which produce finely crafted, handmade chocolate delights. He wears other hats too, which involve protecting the cocoa bean industry, as well being an empathetic ear for LGBTQ farmers in developing countries, that often get overlooked. This is a beautiful, fun and inspiring Podcast chat. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Robert Bowden, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#060. Helena Escalante, Translation Expert, Entrepreneur, Marketing Consultant, People Connector, Bibliophile, Smiler, Founder of Entregurus

Reader. Translator. Interpreter. Bibliophile. Communication Expert. Entrepreneur. Marketing Consultant. People Connector. Smiler. Speaker. Chief Bookworm Officer. Each day, there is something like 2.5 quintillion bytes of new information created online, in the mediums of writing, video, audio etc. We have become content creating machines. While we crave the new and latest trends, there is still so much to learn from reading books. Our guest this week, Helena Escalante, is somebody who knows all too well the importance of information and the value of what is waiting in the written form. Helena is a special lady, who consumes more information than most people you will know. Helena was born and raised in Mexico City, into a family of translators! Even though Spanish is her mother tongue, Helena and her 3 siblings, grew up with English all their life. They learnt through books, their parents and watching cartoons on TV. Books have always played an important part in her life and that was primarily influenced by her Dad’s love for books. He was like a walking encyclopedia. She developed a great work ethic from a young age when she would help in the family translation agency business. Helena had the opportunity to study in the United States, which she grabbed with both hands. She has since resided in the US, although her heart is split between Mexico, the US and Spain, where her husband is from. Helena reads 150+ books a year…!! Every single day she shares one idea, in less than 5 minutes, from the books she reads. She reads books from experts in their fields, ranging in various topics along the spectrum of business, marketing, leadership, psychology, biographies and personal growth. It goes without saying that she is providing immense value to all of those who subscribe to her daily dose of profound ideas. The thing you are mostly going to love about Helena, is her zest for life. This is a lady who does not stop smiling. She is so grateful, kind and thankful for this thing called life and the energy which she radiates is entirely infectious. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#059. Dr Heather McKee, Behaviour Change Specialist, Habit Coach, Podcast Host, Research Geek, PhD in Weightloss Psychology

Behaviour Change Specialist. Habit Coach. Research Geek. Podcast Host. PhD in Weightloss Psychology. Irish Las. Smiler. Wellness Consultant. The success of most people is because of consistency, perseverance, self-awareness and planning. An overarching theme to all of these, is habits. Good habits, specifically, are what contribute to overall wellness and success. Habits need to be learned and ingrained in us through repetition. Our guest this week, Dr Heather McKee, is a lady who knows all too well about the importance of habits and all the science surrounding them too. Heather was born in Dublin, Ireland. Both of her parents were teachers who taught at Universities. Her brother also chose to be a teacher. So teaching runs thickly through their Irish family blood. She grew up in a time when Ireland was going through a tough and violent period politically. Fortunately, their family came out pretty much unscathed, although they were always accustomed to border searches and similar unnerving events. Heather studied Sports Science at a University in Dublin, before shifting across the pond to do her Masters and then a PhD in Weightloss Psychology to top it all off! Her research and articles were picked up and published internationally in leading academic journals and world media publications. This was one of the catalysts for her founding her consultancy and coaching business. As you may have guessed, Heather is an expert in her field, although she prefers to be called a guide. We had the privilege of picking her brain on all things related to habits, weight maintenance and human behaviour and psychology around that. Her overarching philosophy in building and maintaining good habits, is to make sure that they are fun to do! Something which we can all subscribe to. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Heather McKee, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#058. Seth Godin, Bestselling Author, Speaker, Marketing Guru, Teacher

Blogger. Speaker. Marketing Guru. Ruckus Maker. Bestselling Author. Ringleader. Podcaster. Analogy King. Entrepreneur. Teacher.   The internet has certainly changed the world, which has resulted in new types of leaders emerging and also for a new type of leadership. There are smaller tribes of people forming and these people need their own leaders. Tribes are becoming more niche and require a specific type of ringleader. The beauty of the world now, is that we can all find each other. Our guest this week, Seth Godin, is someone who knows this all too well. Which is why he is leading us and encouraging us as entrepreneurs, business people and marketers to find and connect with our minimum viable audience. Seth is the author of 18 bestselling books that have been translated into more than 35 languages. He was also inducted into the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Marketing Hall of Fame in 2018. His daily blog is one of the most popular in the world. He started it over 20 years ago and has now published over 7,300 posts. It is a testament to his philosophy of always showing up. Most of all, Seth, is a teacher. He wants people to realise their potential within themselves and that now the game has changed. We don’t need to be working for large corporates, we can work for ourselves, on work that matters. Seth is a private man and very conscious of the message he wants to spread in this world and also the value he intends on bringing. He grew up in a household where his parents promoted and encouraged change. He trained as an engineer and it didn’t matter what he did, everything kept coming back to change. Fear is something which grips all of us and we have a lot to thank for what he calls, the lizard brain. When he gets fearful of doing something, it’s because the narrator in his head knows he is onto something good. So he will listen to it by doing the exact opposite!! This conversation is mostly about his latest book, This Is Marketing. As he explains, even after writing 18 previous bestsellers, he had no choice but to write another. The market wanted and needed it, so he provided it. You can do work that matters for people who care. This book shows you the way. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#057. Sophie Sabbage, Bestselling Author, Keynote Speaker, Patient Activist, Transformational Facilitator, Cancer Convalescent

Bestselling Author. Keynote Speaker. Teacher. Patient Activist. Transformational Facilitator. Cancer Convalescent. Authenticity Pacesetter. Sage. Luminary. Have you ever stopped and had a think about your future and what it really means? Have you ever considered the thought that all living beings are terminal? There is not one person, one animal, or one living cell, which is going to survive eternally…. Our guest this week, Sophie Sabbage, is somebody who knows all too well how delicate and precious life is. Absolutely everything in her life was perfect. She ran a successful business, she was financially liquid, she was making a positive impact on other people’s lives, she was married to the man of her dreams, she had a young daughter and her health seemed fine too. Until she had a sharp pain in her back. That’s when her life would change forever. Sophie grew up partly in London and partly in Wales. Her father was a Conservative Welsh MP, so she grew up in a political context and was privileged in a way. Growing up in that environment she saw a lot of entitlement and says that even from a young age, she saw it as unfair. An incident which involved a bomb being planted in their family home, made her start questioning life and how much she did and didn’t know. Sophie was diagnosed with late-stage ‘incurable’ metastasizing lung cancer in October 2014, at the age of 48. She was wracked with confusion and fear, after hearing she would likely be dead within 4 months. Fortunately, there were some turning points which shifted her thinking and trajectory. Sophie started a blog three months into treatment, which helped a childhood dream of writing a book eventually materialise. Within five months, the tumours had gone and the cancer in her lungs had reduced by 70%. Her book, The Cancer Whisperer, was an instant bestseller. It chronicles Sophie's extraordinary relationship with cancer. She offers a radically different way of relating to this disease both mentally and practically. Tragedy struck again shortly after publishing her book, when they found 27 tumours in her brain. There was a rare complication and she became more sick than ever. In June 2018, she finished her most recent book, Lifeshocks: And how to love them. If you have ever dealt with tough times in your life, pondered your own mortality or know someone with cancer, then we invite you to listen to this touching conversation. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Sophie Sabbage, to be Ridiculously Human. Brianna and Kristine Tesauro. Heroes. Sassy Sisters. Smilers. Positivity Creators. Living Legends. Adventure Seekers. Cancer Survivors. Founders of Catch Some Air. Most people in the world are going through life as if they are going to be alive forever. Sadly, the truth is, that all of us are terminal. We forget to take notice of the small things in life, those fleeting moments, those little reminders, the sunsets, the sunrises, the smile from a passing stranger. Our guests this week, Brianna and Kristine Tesauro, are the most delightful, happy and smiley sisters you will meet. These girls suffered serious family heartache when their brother died at a young age from Lymphoma. Brianna and Kristine were born in Illinois, just outside of Chicago. Growing up was certainly fun and entertaining…..having a family of 8 siblings, who were all homeschooled, will do that! From an early age, they were involved in the community by helping out their Dad, who was a pastor. It set the foundation of their core values for later in life. Kristine, by chance, was persuaded by her roommate to go and get a health check-up on the 1st April 2015. After a blood test, she was admitted to ER and her life would change forever. She had acute lymphocytic Leukaemia and if she was tested just 2 days later, then she may not be here today to tell us her story… That’s when the heroics and deep sibling connection and love from Brianna really kicked in. She put her life on hold and vouched to be with Kristine every step of the way, through her treatment and recovery. Brianna said, that if it was her last day, week, or year with Kristine, she was going to make it their best time together and do whatever she could. The treatment and chemotherapy were the hardest, most painful and intense times Kristine has ever had to endure. There were days when she felt that giving up would be the easier option… Something magical happened in the hospital. Thanks to Kristine’s artistic streak through times of boredom, she started doodling on white t-shirts with a black marker and that's how their business and charity called, Catch Some Air, was created. These days, Catch Some Air, is a clothing brand, proudly marketed as, ‘The Happiest Clothing Line On Earth’, which as per their strapline, ‘Helps kids with cancer stay happy when they feel crappy’. Their movement supports kids with cancer, by providing them with cool outings, companionship and with cool t-shirts of course! We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#055. Helen Jukes, Amateur Urban Apiarist, Writer, Beekeeper, Writing Tutor, Author of A Honey Bee Heart has Five Openings

One of the most important things in life is to understand the connection between animals and humans. At the end of the day, we are one and the same, just different sorts of animals. We rely on a flourishing and systematic ecosystem, for us to all thrive and co-exist. Our guest this week, Helen Jukes, knows all too well about the importance of nature, connection and specifically bees. Helen has much to thank for the lessons these small organisms have taught her in life. Helen grew up in the beautiful Ullesthorpe, England. It’s hard to grow up there and not love the outdoors, something she enjoyed greatly. After studying psychology, in 2006, she began an MA in Postcolonial studies at Goldsmiths, London. Upon moving to London, a friend introduced her to urban beekeeping. He had 50 hives across London. For Helen, it was a great escape from her stressful office job to spend her weekends opening up these hives and learning about these small flying insects. Her life was somewhat chaotic, in that it was unstable and she moved around jobs a fair bit. It was a group of friends who bought her a beehive starter kit, that set her on a new trajectory. The love affair and fascination had only just begun. Helen spent endless hours researching bees, speaking with her fellow beekeeping friends and of course, learning ‘on the job’ by caring for her hive. She began documenting and writing down everything she was learning about her bees. These writings initiated her authoring a book called, A Honey Bee Heart has Five Openings. The lessons these beautifully crafted creatures have taught her are deeper than something cerebral. The bees started connecting up different things she had been thinking about a lot in her life like, responsibility, care and what home is. They ultimately helped her find love too. This is a magical conversation which we can all learn so much from. It’s brimming with fascinating and interesting facts about bees. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Founder and Creator of SwitchPlayground. Human Movement Specialist. South African. Expert Fitness Trainer. Entrepreneur. Mindset Master. Dad. Teacher. Smiler. Sincere Human. To be an absolute expert at something in life, there is some sort of recipe which is required. You need to spend endless hours learning, practising, improving and refining your art. You need to live and breath it. Goals and dreams are one thing, but actually crystallising them into something meaningful and tangible requires a little more. You need vision, passion, tenacity and the right mindset. Our guest this week, Steve Uria, is a man who has always known what his vision and purpose is. By becoming an expert on the human body and human movement, he has helped others be better versions of themselves through living a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Steve hails from Johannesburg, South Africa, where he grew up as part of a Jewish community. He encountered anti-semitism on a few occasions which pushed him towards the idea of wanting to aspire to be more and not tolerate abuse. He ventured into bodybuilding at 16 years old and immediately found his passion for understanding the human body. After studying a sports degree, he joined the Airforce. It was there where he cultivated a new type of mindset that has helped him through many challenging times in life and business. Steve has constantly evolved as a serial fitness entrepreneur. Creating brands such as BLAST900 and SWEAT1000. His latest creation is the best of them all called, Switch Playground. Switch Playground is a dynamic, fun, upbeat, high tempo, boot-camp style class which changes every day so that you never get bored and it keeps the body guessing! Family means everything to Steve but has certainly thrown him some challenges. His wife and 3 kids reside in Cape Town, South Africa, while he is striving to grow his business in New York City. Having a transgender child has been a huge awakening in his life. His youngest daughter, Tarin, knew from a young age that she was in the wrong body. The lessons his now son, Luke, has taught him about life are some of the most important he has learned. For Steve, having the right mindset is everything. He tells us we need to be motivated, have discipline, be authentic and to always remain humble in life. This is a guy who is not afraid to say what he means and do what he believes in. He lives his passion and nothing is going to stop him from achieving his vision in life. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.
