The Ridiculously Human Podcast
None of us were put on this planet to be a watered down version of ourselves.
In a world where it can seem that people are anti-human and wanting to become cyborg transhumans, this podcast is here to let you know that it’s perfectly ok to be a cool, fun-loving, caring and kind HUMAN!
My desire, through the art of storytelling and story listening, is to share a captivating narrative that traverses everything it means to be human. Not just any human…Ridiculously Human!

RHP#067. Jody Calitz, Women’s Health Expert, Ex-Pro Bikini Bodybuilder, Nutritionist, Vegan Athlete, Elite Personal Trainer
Women’s Health Expert. Ex-Pro Bikini Bodybuilder. Nutritionist. Vegan Athlete. Elite Personal Trainer. Yogi. Holistic Coach. Women’s Transformation Specialist. Smiler. Your health is the most important thing in your entire life. The beauty of being healthy is that it is actually very very simple if you let it be. Nurturing your body and mind with nature’s natural ingredients and goodness, is the best place to start! Our guest this week, Jody Calitz, is a lady who knows this all too well. Her whole life has been dedicated to understanding herself and the human body. From an early age, Jody was a quiet girl who was bullied a lot at school and felt isolated. She had insecurities about how she looked, as she had a fuller physique type with red hair and freckles. Losing her Dad early on contributed to why she craved validation and acceptance from other people. After falling ill with bronchitis and losing a lot of weight as a result, she received a lot of attention and embraced her newfound recognition. However, it got out of control, she stopped eating and over-exercised until she was 17-18 years old, resulting in anorexia. Her bodybuilding career started in 2010 and she entered her first competition in 2011. By 2015, she had achieved her dream of competing on the international stage as a pro-bikini bodybuilder. She managed that feat by competing as a vegan athlete, which was another social stigma she had to deal with. 2016 provided the biggest wake-up call in her life. She experienced a different kind of physical and mental challenge, it was an acute anxiety disorder, coupled with chronic fatigue syndrome. Walking up one flight of stairs was exhausting and needing 10 hours of sleep a night, eating well, doing yoga and mediation was the medicine she needed. Jody combines all her skills, knowledge and expertise to help women change their lives for the better. She believes the body does not work in isolation but rather in a very delicate and intimate relationship with the mind (head) and soul (heart). All 3 elements are so closely connected that it becomes vital to work with them as a whole, in order to achieve a complete transformation of health and wellbeing. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Jody Calitz, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#066. Keegan Smith, NRL Performance Coach, Teacher, Personal Growth Extraordinaire and Founder of RealMOVEMENTProject
NRL Performance Coach. Author. Mentor. Student. Teacher. Personal Growth Extraordinaire. Dad. Budding Farmer. Nature Lover. Founder of RealMOVEMENTProject. These days we are under more stress than ever, as a result of working longer hours, spending less time in nature, not eating correctly, not enjoying deep relationships and sleeping less. This concoction results in disease, inefficiency and underperformance. Keegan Smith, is a man who has had his fair share of ups and downs, of trails and tribulations. Everything which has happened to him in his life, up until now, he uses in his teachings of personal development. Keegan, it would be fair to say, is your rugged Aussie type of bloke. Strong willed, well travelled, positive thinker and glass-half-full type of guy! He was born in Wollongong, NSW, Australia, into a sporting family of Rugby League players and coaches. He grew up with an enhanced competitive spirit. After University, Keegan headed to Central and South America to find out more about this thing called life. His experiences really helped shape him into the fine man, teacher and coach who he is today. He volunteered all over and worked actively for organisations to make changes in rural Mexico. Keegan grew up with digestive issues. It was when he was in Central America, that chronic fatigue hit him. His own life wasn’t his priority in his early 20s because he was focused on helping other people. He attempted being vegetarian and went through many other experiences, that ended up making his health deteriorate too. Stints working as a professional performance coach for rugby league teams around the world, topped up his knowledge tank and broadened his worldviews. Back in Australia, he has intentionally put himself back in nature to get in balance and in line with what it means for him to be a human. He lives on a farm with his wife, kids and 35 animals! It’s allowed them to re-connect with their more primal ways. Keegan has also set-up his business called, RealMOVEMENTProject, targeted at 20-40 year-old males. Helping to nourish your body and mindset, using nature and using gymnastics and weights to build mobility and strength. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#065. Simon McCartney, Mountaineer, Avid Adventurer, Author and Businessman
Mountaineer. Avid adventurer. Dare Devil. Alpinist. Author. Lighting Illusionist. Businessman. It takes a special type of person to put their life at risk, purely because it’s their passion and something which gives them a lot of enjoyment. We do, however, have a lot to be thankful for all of those explorers who have achieved the first of various feats. It’s the curiosity of humans which is always going to keep us moving forward as a species! Once somebody has completed something, it gives others permission and the courage to give it a go themselves. As the great, Nelson Mandela, said: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” Our guest this week, Simon McCartney, is somebody who will go down in mountaineering folklore. He and his friend, Jack Roberts, have climbed mountains and rock faces, which others have never tried again because of their complexity and difficulty. Simon was born in London, his Dad introduced him to mountain walking, as well as rock climbing and caving. He started off with small cliffs in London and quickly began spending time climbing the mountains in Wales. Simon worked as a climbing instructor in Wales, where he met his friend Dave Wilkinson. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Simon enjoyed a wonderfully dare-devilish, courageous and brave time, climbing various peaks around the world with his buddies. In 1977, they decided to climb Mont Blanc in Chamonix. In white-out conditions, they “found” 6 other climbers that needed rescuing. They both ended up summiting and saving those six people’s lives. In June 1978, Simon and Jack, decided to climb the North face of Mt Huntington, Alaska, it had never been climbed and was treacherous. So treacherous in fact, it has never been climbed again! After a somewhat anticlimactic return to “civilisation”, they set their sights on Denali, the tallest (but not highest) mountain in the world. They spent 29 days on the mountain! At about 19000 feet, Simon collapsed with cerebral edema, while Jack had frostbite. Jack had to decide whether to stay and die with Simon, or to leave and go for help….. The story that followed is truly courageous and movie-like! Simon and Jack, never saw much of each other again. In 2012, someone was looking for Simon in an online climbing forum. It was Jack. Simon soon found out that, Jack had died in a climbing accident. Simon, with the help of Jack and other climbers diary entries, decided to write about their time in Alaska together. The book, The Bond, came out in 2016, which served partly as a memoir, partly as wanting to tell their story. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#063. Travis Kuhn, Professional Bartender, Smiler, Entrepreneur, Mixologist, Founder of The Perfect Serve
Professional Bartender. Smiler. Mixologist. Entrepreneur. Joburg Boetjie. Dad. Entertainer. Cocktail Aficianado. Flair Specialist. Founder of The Perfect Serve. It takes a special type of human to work in the hospitality industry. When people are out having fun, you are there to serve them. When you want to have fun, others are working. When your clientele are asleep, you are awake. When they are awake, you are asleep. Our guest this week, Travis Kuhn, was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Life got off to a bit of a delicate start because he contracted a bone infection called, Osteomyelitis. It was something which the doctors didn’t know too much about at the time. Fortunately, there is no adverse long-term damage. Travis enjoyed a good, yet challenging upbringing. Schools in South Africa can be a rough place for young kids, but he was fortunate to have an older brother who was extremely doting and protective of him. After school, he became interested in being a bartender, because his brother was working in a cocktail bar which looked like a helluva lot more fun! Travis practised every day on his own watching YouTube videos. He became exceedingly good and accomplished at it. He really made a name for himself within the industry and won pretty much every competition which he entered in his early days. He also got to travel the world by competing in competitions. It was a time for him to share ideas with and learn from other bartenders from around the world. In 2018, at 38 years old, as a supposedly ‘post-peak’ bartender, Trav had his greatest achievement yet. He came 5th in the World Class Club Bartending Championships. To give that some context, this is a competition which is entered by 10,000 people, from 60 countries globally. It is the Wimbledon, of Bartending! There are a ton of interesting things which we discuss in this Podcast conversation, to mention a few; South African schooling, sibling connection, the challenges of having a family and being a professional bartender, the art and science of mixology, being recognised for what you do, and of course his latest achievement at the World Class Club and an in-depth description of what it entailed. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Travis Kuhn, to be Ridiculously Human. Earth Changer. Ocean Conservationist. Artist. Plastic Researcher and Assailant. Skipper. Ocean Advocate. Teacher. Speaker. Smiler. Leader. Founder of Running eXXpedition Plastic has had and still does have great uses in modern society. However, it is also a not-so-silent killer. Synthetic plastics’ origin, dates back to the early 1900s and then it became really popular in the 1960s. In the space of 60 years we, as the human race, have managed to have a detrimental impact on the environment using plastic alone. Our guest this week, Emily Penn, is a lady who understands the consequences of plastic usage and it’s overconsumption, more than most people in this world. It’s when you see and experience things first hand, that you truly begin to understand the vast, negative footprint which plastic is having on the earth. Emily was born in Swansea and grew up in Penarth, South Wales. Her parents met on a sailing boat, which was ultimately some sort of destiny for her. From a young age, she was a bit of a water baby. By the age of 14, she earned a place in the Welsh Sailing Squad. Her true passion was art and design. She says that she didn’t have a grand plan in life, there was no map to follow, she was simply looking for the sign-posts along the way. One of those sign-posts led her to study Architecture. Little did she know where the future sign-posts would lead her... Once she had completed her degree, she managed to hook herself up with an architectural job in Australia...and what better way to get there than to hitchhike from the U.K? She liked the idea of ‘travelling slowly’, something she had learned earlier in her life….! While researching her hitchhiking adventure, she discovered a vessel which could help her for part of the journey. She rocked up for a weekend of orientation in Brighton, to see if she was the right fit, to be a crew member on the alien looking ocean vessel called, Earthrace. She didn’t quite expect to only return 925 days later! During this voyage, was her greatest awakening and ‘discovery’ of all --> plastic pollution. She saw how it was scattered all over our oceans and later discovered how it had infiltrated itself into each of our bodies. Since then she has lived on islands, learnt new languages, set-up research businesses, sailed the oceans of the world numerous times, and become a symbolic figure for our fight against plastic consumption. It’s going to take a billion micro-habits to undo all the plastic damage which exists around the world today. It all starts with us. We owe it to our current and future generations to each take responsibility in reducing our plastic and chemical footprint. Let Emily’s journey and story be a motivating reason for you to begin. RHP#061. Robert Bowden, Chocolatier, Gay Cowboy, Professional Horse Trainer, Theatrical Aficionado, Farm Boy and Founder of Vivere Chocolates
Chocolatier. Gay. Cowboy. Professional Horse Trainer. Theatrical Aficionado. Farm Boy. Cornbread Lover. Napper. Brogi. Traveller. Founder of Vivere Chocolates Everything which happens between life and death is what you make of it, some of it by choice and some of it by destiny. Many times during your life, events will not make much sense at the time. However, those moments will re-visit you, later on, to remind you why they happened. Robert Bowden, is a man who understands this all too well. He learnt many lessons and skills while growing up on a farm and learning from his grandparents, his surrounding environment and his freedom to explore. Robert, was born in Duncanville, Alabama, the deep south of the U.S. On paper, you would say that he had his deck of cards stacked against him by being a theatrical, black, gay, farm boy. However, that is something which never crossed his mind while growing up. His Grandmother had three large fields, which she called her gardens, and they provided enough food to feed the four immediate households. Robert started raising chickens at the age of 5 and selling eggs became his first business. By the time he was 8 years old, he had well over 200 chickens and had names for them all too! Selling the eggs for 75 cents a dozen, made him a fairly affluent 8 year old :) Robert was a rough and tumble kid, who loved to ride horses and sing at the top of his lungs. At age 12, he realised that he liked boys. In College, he decided it was time to tell his folks. It was a real non-event, as the response was pretty much “Is this supposed to be news son?!” So Robert just skipped off and went back to feeding his horses. A successful career which spanned 20 years of being a professional horse trainer, came to a bit of an abrupt end, when circumstances in the horse training industry made it implausible for him to continue, even though it was something he loved. These days, Robert is the Founder of Vivere Chocolates, which produce finely crafted, handmade chocolate delights. He wears other hats too, which involve protecting the cocoa bean industry, as well being an empathetic ear for LGBTQ farmers in developing countries, that often get overlooked. This is a beautiful, fun and inspiring Podcast chat. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Robert Bowden, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#060. Helena Escalante, Translation Expert, Entrepreneur, Marketing Consultant, People Connector, Bibliophile, Smiler, Founder of Entregurus
Reader. Translator. Interpreter. Bibliophile. Communication Expert. Entrepreneur. Marketing Consultant. People Connector. Smiler. Speaker. Chief Bookworm Officer. Each day, there is something like 2.5 quintillion bytes of new information created online, in the mediums of writing, video, audio etc. We have become content creating machines. While we crave the new and latest trends, there is still so much to learn from reading books. Our guest this week, Helena Escalante, is somebody who knows all too well the importance of information and the value of what is waiting in the written form. Helena is a special lady, who consumes more information than most people you will know. Helena was born and raised in Mexico City, into a family of translators! Even though Spanish is her mother tongue, Helena and her 3 siblings, grew up with English all their life. They learnt through books, their parents and watching cartoons on TV. Books have always played an important part in her life and that was primarily influenced by her Dad’s love for books. He was like a walking encyclopedia. She developed a great work ethic from a young age when she would help in the family translation agency business. Helena had the opportunity to study in the United States, which she grabbed with both hands. She has since resided in the US, although her heart is split between Mexico, the US and Spain, where her husband is from. Helena reads 150+ books a year…!! Every single day she shares one idea, in less than 5 minutes, from the books she reads. She reads books from experts in their fields, ranging in various topics along the spectrum of business, marketing, leadership, psychology, biographies and personal growth. It goes without saying that she is providing immense value to all of those who subscribe to her daily dose of profound ideas. The thing you are mostly going to love about Helena, is her zest for life. This is a lady who does not stop smiling. She is so grateful, kind and thankful for this thing called life and the energy which she radiates is entirely infectious. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.
