My Thoughts Monday #79- Jay DeMayo- What Is Necessary For Your Athlete’s Depends On YOU

“We need to take a step back and understand that giving them what they need, not what they can handle is completely dependent upon what you’ve prescribed and how you have developed them as an athlete.”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. During the event was a great round table Q and A, and one question really stuck with me. As coaches, we really like our if P then Q situations and having all our progressions and regressions set. Understanding the idea of minimal effective dose and giving the athlete what they need, not what they can handle, is determined by how prepared the athlete is, how ready the athlete is, and how well you have prepared the athlete. I give my take on this, where I see this confusion coming from and how we can do better with understanding where these “alterations” can come from. Make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.comAs we enter this transition period of the year, being where many basketball teams are somewhere between the post season and off season, we need to make sure that we look at how we are handling the athletes we get to work with. The “Grind” as so many like to call it can be a good thing, the idea of wanting to work more and put in the effort can be a good thing, BUT if we just blindly work, and keep going and going and “GRINDING” are we actually pushing people in a proper direction and moving them forward, or are we just “GRINDING” their knees. Today I share my thoughts on this and where I feel like we can help them “GRIND” smarter, while still doing the work they want to.
