Tim O'Neal: 30th Anniversary: Lessons Learned from Excellence in Leadership Award Winner
With nearly three decades of experience working in the thrift industry, Tim O’Neal has spent the past 18 years focused on the vision of ending poverty through the power of work. When O’Neal was brought on with Goodwill of Central Arizona, the organization was in serious financial trouble and at risk of having its membership removed by Goodwill Industries International. O’Neal’s arrival marked a turning point in the 70-year history of the organization, and his leadership was instrumental in keeping the organization running by increasing retail operations by 3000 percent during his tenure as the Vice President of Retail Operations (1999 – 2007).O’Neal brought a distinct level of professionalism to the retail side of the organization, a characteristic that quickly spread throughout the organization. O’Neal values the time and effort of his employees above all else. He knows the successful reach of Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona’s mission is due to the hard work and innovation all employees exhibit every day. O’Neal recognizes talent and feels it is important for the organization to cultivate leadership at all levels. He is most proud of the transparency the nonprofit presents, as well as the workplace culture that regularly earns top marks on “Best Places to Work” rankings.Goodwill’s founder, Edgar Helms, envisioned providing people in need with the skills and opportunities that lead to self-sufficiency by providing a hand-up, not a handout. O’Neal believes wholeheartedly in carrying out this mission to better the lives of everyone in our state. He knows the best way to bring a positive impact to Arizona is to work together, collaborate, and cultivate partnerships with community members, organizations, and leaders.Tim O’Neal is proud of his employees and proud of the positive impact Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona leaves on the local community.O’Neal holds a Certificate in Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management from the Harvard Business School Executive Education program. O’Neal graduated in June 2010 from Goodwill Industries International’s Executive Leadership Development program, which drives excellence, strategic planning, and personal development skills for top executives in the industry. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Tim O'Neal discuss:Creating impact through servant leadership The purpose is community Taking care of your team Communication and transparency Key Takeaways:We have different job titles, but nobody's more important than the next person. Take care of your people and they’ll take care of everything else. The purpose is community, taking care of your fellow humans. No matter what people think, you and I can make a difference and that’s why it matters. As a leader, make sure that your organization has enough resources to weather any kind of storm that comes up. Be careful about the decisions you’re making today. Keep in mind that you have a responsibility to care for your team when tougher times arrive. Why wouldn’t you want to communicate and be transparent? It saves you the hassle of having to relay messages over and over to make sure that everybody’s on the same page. "If you're the leader, the number one job, you have to take care of your people. And if you do that, they take care of everything else." — Tim O'Neal See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Tim O’Neal:LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/tim-o-nealWebsite: https://www.goodwillaz.org/team-member/tim-oneal/Email: timoneal@goodwillaz.org Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Bryan Clayton: You Get the Culture You Deserve
Bryan has been in the lawn care industry his entire working life starting with mowing neighbor’s lawns in high school to ultimately founding Peach Tree Inc, a market-leading landscape company in the southeast, and growing the firm to over 125 employees. In 2013 he navigated the successful acquisition of Peach Tree to Landscapes USA a national provider of commercial landscape services. The inspiration for GreenPal is born out of the frustration Bryan observed while operating the landscape business, and how difficult it is for homeowners to find, schedule, and pay a reliable small lawn care professional. Bryan is in charge of GreenPal’s strategic direction and growth to become the platform that powers the lawn care industry. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Bryan Clayton discuss:How culture can be an advantageLeaders are responsible for the culture How you could fix a bad culture Building a culture vs cultivating a culture Key Takeaways:People choose companies based on how they feel and one of the things that affect how they feel about the company is its culture. If you’re a leader in a space, then you are primarily responsible for the office culture. You get what you give out, your people reflect how you are and how you treat them. If going to work feels like a chain around your neck, guess how your team members feel. If you want to fix your culture, focus on doing small things consistently and build up from there. Learn to genuinely care about the people in your company, know their names, and be sincerely curious about their lives and how they are doing. Building a culture in your company is less like being a construction worker and more like being a gardener. The culture of your company needs constant tending, it’s not a project that has an endpoint - it’s a living thing that needs continuous nourishment and growth. "As the CEO, chief, boss, or whatever you call yourself, you get exactly the culture that you deserve. You hired these people, you brought them on to the mission with you, and believe it or not, they are reflecting your level of enthusiasm." — Bryan Clayton See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7IConnect with Bryan Clayton: Website: https://www.yourgreenpal.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bryan-clayton-a96b33214Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bryanmclayton/ Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Josh Fonger: Getting Consistent Results
Josh is an international business consultant, coach, and speaker. He has the unique experience of personally helping hundreds of businesses grow simply using the WTS Method. His specialty is taking stressed-out entrepreneurs from working "in" their business to working "on" their business using systems so that profit and freedom can become a consistent mechanical reality. Josh has personally consulted or coached over 1000 business owners from more than 100 industries, from small startup businesses to $500M enterprises. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Josh Fonger discuss:Taking a step backDocumenting your workEmpowering your teamGetting consistent results Key Takeaways:If you step back and document all the problems that happen on a consistent basis, you could be better prepared to face them instead of just reacting each time.Write down your whole day, track everything all through out for at least two days. It’s going to be tedious, but it will open your eyes and allow you to be able to recognize the recurring problems and inefficiencies. If you’re a manager, you’ve got to delegate the tasks properly. You need to have full documentation and clarity on the instructions on how to do the task correctly from start to finish. By doing this, you could also empower your team so that they know exactly what to do.The only way to get consistent and controlled results is to fully document the instructions for a task. Doing this doesn’t only bring clarity to what the team member is supposed to do but it also helps them know what is expected of them. "If you develop and then document the systems that make up what you do, what your team does, eventually, those problems aren't gonna be happening anymore because you're gonna be cutting out variability, you're gonna be cutting out waste in terms of time and materials." — Josh Fonger See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Josh Fonger: Website: https://wtsenterprises.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/workthesystemLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshfonger/ Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine TallaAudio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Tony Child: Success On Purpose
Tony Child is the Founder and Owner of Elevated Worldwide, whose mission is to elevate businesses worldwide through the daily process of creating habits that produce desired results. He focuses on helping companies reach their goals while implementing positive change in the lives of their employees with time-tested and research-based processes. Tony has mentored executives, high-performing entrepreneurs, and Olympic athletes. Aside from his active guidance, through his book “VisionShift: A 10-Week Program to Transforming Your Life, Company and Industry So You Can Have, Do and Give More”, Tony continues making a great impact on leaders’ lives. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Tony Child discuss:How mindset makes a huge difference Bringing awareness into our programming The disadvantage of living an unconscious life Shifting from “not enough” to “more than enough” Key Takeaways:If you change the way you see things then the things you see will change. Changing your thoughts from negative or neutral to positive can change results dramatically. Bring the unconscious out into the conscious mind. Through therapy, coaching, journaling, and looking at the beliefs you hold about life, you’ll be able to see what is essentially your “programming” and rewrite it as necessary. If we don’t make ourselves aware of our own internal programming, we will have the disadvantage of being controlled and limited by it subconsciously. Most people are programmed to see life from a lens of “not enough”. Confirmation bias sets in and we see evidence of what we already believe is true. Shift your lens from “not enough” to “more than enough”. One way to make progress in this is by practicing gratitude. "We've got to rewrite some things because your beliefs right now - it’s not programmed to take you there." — Tony Child See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7IConnect with Tony Child: Website: https://tonychild.com/ | http://keepelevated.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tonyrchild/ | https://www.linkedin.com/company/elevated-worldwide/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tonyrchild Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Steven Gaffney discuss:Honest communication in the workplace Providing an environment of emotional safety Encouraging people to be more candidGiving negative feedback Key Takeaways:The biggest problem in communication is not in what people say but it's actually in what they don't say to each other or what they leave out. There’s a difference between being told that you are in a safe place and feeling that you are in a safe place. People want to tell the truth, so it's important we provide an environment of emotional safety. Create emotional safety. If you’re a leader in your organization, you must initiate and promote speaking candidly. Also, reward honesty. Encourage people to be more honest and give and receive feedback. When you give honest negative feedback, be ready also to give an actionable step that’s measurable and within a time frame. Ask them how you could help them complete their task and establish accountability. Stacey Brown Randall: Generating Referrals Naturally Without Manipulation or Asking
Stacey Brown Randall is the multiple award-winning author of Generating Business Referrals Without Asking, host of the Roadmap to Grow Your Business podcast and national speaker.Stacey teaches business owners how to generate referrals naturally… without manipulating, incentivizing or even asking. She has been featured in national publications like Entrepreneur magazine, Investor Business Daily, Forbes, and more. She received her Master’s in Organizational Communication and is married with three kids. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Stacey Brown Randall discuss:Understanding that referrals aren’t about you Being genuine and practicing gratitude Creating a good client experience Going into a prospecting meeting with the right mindset Key Takeaways:The first step to getting more referrals is to understand how referrals even happen. Referrals aren’t about you, it’s about the referral source. If they understand the problem a person is facing and they know that you can solve it, they’ll refer the person to you. Be genuine and always put the heart of the relationship first and foremost. Also, you must always remember to express gratitude when somebody refers you. Send a handwritten thank you note, not an email or a text message that can easily be forgotten or buried in their inbox. Work on the experience that you give to your client. Don’t ask for direct referral, instead, give them a referable experience. Do good work and work on the relationship. Have the right mindset when going into a meeting. There’s a big difference between the mindset of “I want this person to hire me” and “I want this person to adore me, help me, and refer me.” "Until you can impact how they feel about you. You certainly can't direct how they think about you." — Stacey Brown Randall See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Stacey Brown Randall: Website: http://www.staceybrownrandall.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/staceybrownrandall/?hl=enLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/staceybrandallFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/staceybrownrandall Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Lisa Morton discuss:How crisis reveals our identity and creates progressOrganizations that stay and get stronger together Adding value during adversities Working with others who are aligned with your values Key Takeaways:Adversity can create a lot of beauty and positive progress. It is where our true identity is tested. We can only know who we really are or who our team members are when we go through a crisis. Organizations that figured out who they were, what their purpose was, and what their values were are those that stayed together and got stronger.Companies that add value during adversities will be remembered. Companies that don’t add value during adversities will also be remembered. People will be able to work more effectively and happily when they work with others who are aligned with their own values and purpose. Steve Wiideman: Reaching Peak Performance in Work, Life, and Marketing
Writer, scientist, professor, and practitioner of search optimization, Steve Wiideman lives, breathes, and eats SEO, SEM, and inbound marketing. He is the author of SEO Strategy & Skills, a college textbook through Stukent. When he's not leading his team of SEO consultants for franchise, multi-location, and e-commerce brands, he's a cheeseball romantic, entertaining dad, and world traveler with a passion for life; embracing culture and diversity. While serving as an adjunct professor at UCSD and CSUF, Steve’s also building the Academy of Search, while volunteering time to help improve transparency and industry standards as an agency trainer. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Steve Wiideman discuss:Why transparency is important Owning your mistakes Practicing transparency in hiring Focusing more on the value you give Key Takeaways:People won’t feel bought into something if they don’t know what the something is 100%. Make sure that there’s transparency in the organization with your team and with your clients. Whenever you mess up or something doesn’t go well, it’s important to own it. Be honest, be genuine, and be sincere. You don’t have to make such a big show about it, but you have to be vulnerable and admit what you did wrong internally and if necessary, externally as well. A good practice when hiring is to ask the person if they could talk about stories of them working with other people. If they could talk about it, then it’s a really good sign. If you still feel uncomfortable, ask for more points of reference. Focus on being the best and having the most value to give, not just on being SEO-noticeable. Because if you are the number one result, but the information you give is basic and bland, eventually, the stats are going to catch up and your true search rank will show. "If you're afraid of your competitors taking your business, then you're not doing as good as them and you need to step up your game. Because in the digital marketing world, especially in SEO, your job is to be number one. Nobody goes to page two of Google. You've got to be so competitive that the competition comes to you." — Steve Wiideman See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Steve Wiideman: Website: https://www.wiideman.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/seosteveInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/seosteveFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/wiidemanLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/seoexpert/ Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Rachel Richter: How To Create Greater Alignment with Yourself, Team, and Organizations
Rachel Richter is the Founder and Managing Partner of INLIGN, the premier alignment coaching and advisory practice for teams and organizations seeking to rectify misalignment and enable optimal functioning. Rachel describes alignment as “culture in action.” Out of further demand, she also founded align&thrive, the alignment coaching practice for individuals with the purpose of making thriving attainable personally and professionally. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Rachel Richter discuss:What alignment means Scaling alignment from the individual Rooting out the cause of misalignment The connection between alignment and intuition Key Takeaways:We intuitively understand to a certain extent what alignment means since we can feel it when we are not in alignment. There is alignment when actions accurately reflect priorities and intentions. Organizational alignment scales from the individual. Each one must see if they align with themselves while creating space between themselves and their role. If you are a leader in your organization and you can see a serious lack of alignment, then you need to seek out where the source of misalignment is. Each part of your organizational structure must be incentivized to work towards the same thing. Bringing more resurgence to alignment will bring more resurgence to intention and intuition and all these will maximize business performance and overall success. "We don't come to a place of seeing each other and being able to collaborate if we don't have the same or mutually beneficial intentions." — Rachel Richter See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Rachel Richter: Website: https://www.getinlign.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/imrachelrichter Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Ryan Margolin: Five Timeless Principles for Growing Yourself and Your Business
Ryan Margolin, the CEO of Professional Hair Labs, set out on a journey to help create the world's leading product in cosmetic bonding when his mother was poisoned by the harmful chemicals in the hair adhesive products commonly used in the industry. Inspired to keep the same thing from happening to anybody else, his family dove into the research and created their first hair care product free of harmful substances. Now, nearly 20 years later, Ryan is an international business leader and an entrepreneur who works in more than 15 different countries. There, he helps create sustainable services and products in industries full of subpar and even harmful options. With the help of Ryan’s expertise in effectively taking concepts and formulating strategies for success in multiple different industries, as well as his flexibility, clarity, and dedication to putting people first, Professional Hair Labs has expanded its manufacturing tenfold, grown to become one of the 500 fastest-growing companies in the US over the last 5 years, and has sold more than $50 million in product globally. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Ryan Margolin discuss:Setting aside ego Encouraging open communication The difference is in the mindset Controlling the fire Key Takeaways:If you truly want the business to succeed and grow, then egos must be set aside. People need to be able to drop the veil and look at themselves in the mirror to figure out how they could help the company best. Encourage people to speak their thoughts openly. Set up open lines of communication between the organization’s members and executives. Consider hiring a person with a good mindset. A person who may be less qualified than another but has a stronger and hungrier kind of mindset will be a better asset to your company than others. You don’t want to have that type of person slipping off your fingers. Fear is like fire. You can step back and just watch it burn everything down. Or you could control the fire and not be afraid of it. "It really comes down to mindset. It’s the difference between are you just gonna stay in the same place or are you gonna truly achieve what you know you can and realize your full potential." — Ryan Margolin See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Ryan Margolin: Website: https://www.prohairlabs.comTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ghostbondglueInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/professionalhairlabs/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/professionalhairlabsLinkedIn: https://ie.linkedin.com/in/ryanmargolinConnect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions.
