The lean concept can be applied in every kind of business, not only manufacturing ones. Eliminating waste from your business process should lead to maximizing the value given to the customer. Think of any unnecessary complexity, or any inefficient system and cut it down while having the best interest of the customer front and center in your mind. Email or phone call? It depends on your business. If you’re going for high volume, use email but if the service you provide is a more boutique, high-level experience, and you want a more personal touch, then go for a phone call. Before you commit to doing anything new in your business, take a look at your whole process and organize it into cut, hold, change, and keep. Keep must contain what’s working while Change should have the processes that have value but might need some changes. Cut must contain the things that don’t make sense and hold should contain those that you’re not that sure of.   "I'm going to make lean super simple. Both synchronous and asynchronous communication maintains that feeling of being connected with each other. Through that feeling of being always on, it will feel like you’re always communicating. There are few face-to-face meetings happening nowadays in the virtual workplace, something that will keep people connected besides communication is documentation. When a problem presents itself, it has to be clearly documented. Change has to come from the person at the top. The leader has to set an example for everybody. If the leader is ever lax on a certain procedure, the organization's members will stop taking it seriously. Whenever you receive a message, acknowledge it. Reply to it, even if just to say that you don’t have a definitive response to the message yet or that you don’t understand the message at the moment. It has to be framed from customer-centric logic, not organizational-centric logic. There are many ways you can establish exclusivity for your organization. Communicate to your clients that you serve specific groups, people from specific places, or from specific backgrounds. Clarity is one of the hardest things to figure out for an organization. We know who our organization is because we are in it and that’s what makes it hard to communicate our organization’s identity to uninitiated potential clients. The curse of knowledge makes it difficult to define who exactly our organization is. Credibility comes down to what are the facts, the figures, and the data that prove that these different claims of value are true. It could come in the form of case studies, third-party endorsements, or third-party credibility indicators. "The hardest thing that we find for any organization for-profit [or] nonprofit is to figure out how to solve for clarity. Mark Carpenter: How Storytelling Creates Powerful Connections with Your People

Mark Carpenter is a serial storyteller. Even as a child, he loved to tell stories (mainly to get attention). He leveraged that ability into a career in marketing communications and public relations, then as a college professor and corporate facilitator. Now, he teaches people how to more intentionally tell stories that teach, lead, sell, and inspire to accomplish business and personal goals. Giving without knowing the community and the reputation of a nonprofit can do more harm than good.Nonprofit founders generally start companies to do good, but to sustain their organization, they need to have studied how to operate a for-profit business and how to collaborate with others. The motivation for everyone ultimately is to do good, but the good can only be sustained if those who initiate and manage that change is properly incentivized. It’s not wrong for nonprofit workers to earn more. There are three kinds of donors. First is the sustainer donor, they are the ones that love your group and will fund you year after year. Second is the campaigner donor, somebody who cares about a specific cause. The third is the launcher donor and they want to fill in the gaps. "You, as a nonprofit, need to know the kind of donor you're talking to. In my over a decade of experience, I've found that there's three distinct types of donors. That’s the foundation of any business. If people aren’t aligned, the relationship will not last.  If you don’t love what you’re doing, you’ll go to work and be in pain the whole day through. This is a great cause for inefficiency in the workplace, people can’t go into flow and they’ll probably tap out  after three hours at work. If you’re an employer, you’re looking for limber people, not flexible people.
