Dr. John Andazola & Dr. Mary Alice Scott share their learnings about the CULTURE of Health Care

John Andazola, MD, FAAFP was born andraised in Las Cruces, New Mexico where he attended New Mexico State University.He received his MD from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in1997, and completed residency at the Southern New Mexico Family MedicineResidency program in 2000. Dr Andazola went on to complete a fellowship inAdvanced Hospital Training for Family Physicians in Phoenix AZ, and a FacultyDevelopment Fellowship at the University of Arizona from 2001-2003. Aftercompletion of the fellowships Dr. Andazola joined the fellowship faculty andlater became director of the fellowship. Dr. Andazola moved back to Las Crucesin January of 2009 and became program director in May of 2009. He is very happyto be back home! Dr. Andazola’s interests are in medical education, hospitalmedicine, OB and border health. He is committed to his community and iscommitted to producing well rounded Family Physicians for southern New Mexico.Dr. Scott is associate professor ofanthropology and graduate faculty in the integrated behavioral health programat New Mexico State University. She is also adjunct research faculty at theSouthern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency Program. She received her B.A. inWomen’s Studies from Duke University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in anthropologyfrom the University of Kentucky. Her research program is part of anacademic-community collaboration with a team of NMSU students and faculty andthe residency program. The program includes explorations of the culture ofmedicine and medical education as well as development of curricula and tools toimprove training in health equity in health care professions. The team’scurrent project is a mixed-methods evaluation of a social determinants ofhealth screening tool used in a primary care clinic in the U.S.-Mexico borderregion. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation,Fulbright, National Cancer Institute, the New Mexico State University Collegeof Arts & Sciences, the Southwest and Border Cultures Institute, and theLoomis Foundation.
