Dr. John Andazola & Dr. Mary Alice Scott share their learnings about the CULTURE of Health Care

John Andazola, MD, FAAFP was born and

raised in Las Cruces, New Mexico where he attended New Mexico State University.

He received his MD from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in

1997, and completed residency at the Southern New Mexico Family Medicine

Residency program in 2000. Dr Andazola went on to complete a fellowship in

Advanced Hospital Training for Family Physicians in Phoenix AZ, and a Faculty

Development Fellowship at the University of Arizona from 2001-2003. After

completion of the fellowships Dr. Andazola joined the fellowship faculty and

later became director of the fellowship. Dr. Andazola moved back to Las Cruces

in January of 2009 and became program director in May of 2009. He is very happy

to be back home! Dr. Andazola’s interests are in medical education, hospital

medicine, OB and border health. He is committed to his community and is

committed to producing well rounded Family Physicians for southern New Mexico.

Dr. Scott is associate professor of

anthropology and graduate faculty in the integrated behavioral health program

at New Mexico State University. She is also adjunct research faculty at the

Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency Program. She received her B.A. in

Women’s Studies from Duke University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in anthropology

from the University of Kentucky. Her research program is part of an

academic-community collaboration with a team of NMSU students and faculty and

the residency program. The program includes explorations of the culture of

medicine and medical education as well as development of curricula and tools to

improve training in health equity in health care professions. The team’s

current project is a mixed-methods evaluation of a social determinants of

health screening tool used in a primary care clinic in the U.S.-Mexico border

region. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation,

Fulbright, National Cancer Institute, the New Mexico State University College

of Arts & Sciences, the Southwest and Border Cultures Institute, and the

Loomis Foundation. Her work has been published in Collaborative

Anthropologies, Journal of Interprofessional Care, and Qualitative Health

Research among other journals.
