69. Overcoming School Refusal Part One w/ John Chellew, School Refusal Clinic Bayside
School refusal is a tremendous challenge for kids, teenagers, their families and their schools. Often misunderstood, it’s not usually a matter of not wanting to go to school; most want to be back in the classroom with their friends; they just feel so overwhelmed that they can’t. Anxiety is one of the challenges that often underpins the overwhelming discomfort that accompanies walking through the school gate, getting out of the car, or even leaving the house. It’s terribly distressing for the whole family, some parents forced to leave their jobs to take care of their child at home. In this episode, part one of a two part series, John Chellew, Founder of The School Refusal Clinic in Melbourne helps us understand what’s at the heart of school refusal, the important role of parents and the fun, unique approach he uses to change the lives of school refusers and their families.School Refusal Clinic BaysideSchool Refusal Clinic FacebookSchool Refusal Clinic InstagramHeadspacePartners in Parenting | Monash UniversityGuidelines for parents of children with school reluctanceThanks for listening to this episode of “Well, hello anxiety with Dr Jodi Richardson.”How you can help: If you enjoyed this episode, or gained some useful insight from it, please share it with a friend or family member. 66. 4000 weeks w/ Dr Jodi Richardson
Our time here is limited, that’s not news to anyone of us but it’s not something we often, or like to, think about. Understandably, it’s painful to contemplate not being around but what’s arguably more painful, is going through each day, over years and years, and not doing the things that are important. The things that might scare us, but also light us up. Standing up for what we believe in, and being the type of person we want to be. In this episode I share a handful of questions to help you gain more clarity so that you can begin, or continue to, steer your life in the direction that will bring you the most fulfilment now, and in years to come. 65. Distancing from worry w/ Dr Jodi Richardson
Difficult thoughts, worry and distressing thinking can be very much a part of the anxiety package that makes life miserable at times. While we can’t control what we think, or change what we think, we can change our relationship with what we think using a number of different strategies. In this episode I share a range of ideas that facilitate the process of putting distance between who we are and what we’re thinking. These ideas were a game changer for me and my incessant worry, I hope they do the same for you, or someone you love. 63. If I had a magic wand… w/ Dr Jodi Richardson
Anxiety has a way of pulling us back, telling us ‘no’, saying ‘stop’ or spilling over and holding us down before we even get a chance to think about what we really want. It’s because our brain is working hard to keep us safe, and yet, these signals keep our world small. They stop us from doing what matters; sometimes in huge ways, sometimes in ways that are small but significant. However anxiety gets in the way for you, this episode is designed to give you a fresh perspective on your life with anxiety; I do this by asking you a very important question. 62. PANDAS w/ Dr Leila Masson, Consultant Paediatrician
The sudden onset of anxiety, OCD behaviours, tics (including blinking, shrugging, snorting, throat clearing), changes in handwriting and bedwetting are tell-tale signs of a relatively unknown disease known as PANS/PANDAS - and occur in the wake of (and sometimes months after) an infection, often strep throat. On average one in 200 children will be affected but, among the medical fraternity, it’s not always easily recognised, which is why my conversation with Dr Leila Masson for this episode is so incredibly important. In this episode Leila shares the causes, what to look for, and importantly how PANS/PANDAS is treated. The majority of cases resolve with ibuprofen and antibiotics.
