How to Test a Product and Bring it to the Marketplace with Mark Aramli Founder of BedJet

Today we have Mark Aramli the inventor and founder of BedJet. Bedjet is the world’s first rapid cooling and heating system just for your bed. Mark started his career working on the space suit for NASA. He was responsible for helping engineer elements relating to heating and cooling of the interior space suit environment for the astronauts. Mark’s career has included collaborating with BMW on their first zero-emissions hydrogen powered 7-series sedan, working with Capstone Turbine Corporation, and even portable power systems for the U.S. Army and Marines. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn:  [2:30] Jeremy introduces his guest, Mark Aramli.  [4:00] Mark talks about working with the Harmon Brothers.  [7:00] Why Mark doesn’t spend much money on brand awareness.  [9:15] Who is the target audience for the Bedjet?  [11:30] Mark describes the Bedjet and explains how it has evolved.  [16:10] How did Mark validate the Bedjet?  [18:10] Mark talks about his experience with using the Kickstarter platform.  [21:20] Taking the Bedjet to Shark Tank.  [27:50] The difference between working with retail and direct to consumer.  [32:30] Mark talks about using Amazon’s Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) program.  [34:50] How does Mark keep knock-offs at bay?  [39:20] A low moment in business for Mark.  In this episode… What does it take to test a product, produce it, and bring it to the marketplace? Is there a best approach that most business leaders use or is it all up to chance? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from business leader and innovator, Mark Aramli. In his conversation with Jeremy, Mark opens up about how he came up with the idea for the Bedjet, why he decided to appear on Shark Tank, what it took to validate the Bedjet, and much more. You don’t want to miss a minute of this fascinating episode featuring Mark’s story!  Where does an innovative idea like the Bedjet come from? From the complexity and the amazing technology involved, you’d think that the idea for a device like the Bedjet came from a technology firm. The truth is - the Bedjet was born out of Mark’s desire to tinker around with a device that would solve his personal dilemma of temperature control in his bed. After he landed on a prototype - Mark decided to get wider input by sending the device to his friends and family - they agreed, Bedjet was a hit!  Once he had the product figured out - Mark had to go to work getting the product exposure in the marketplace. Running a small startup - you can imagine that Mark’s brand awareness budget was almost $0. Thankfully, they were able to get a Bedjet into the hands of the brilliant and talented marketing agency - The Harmon Brothers. In just a few months - Mark had a fun, entertaining, and engaging video he could use to promote the Bedjet. You can view the video that helped put the Bedjet on the map the Bedjet website! As a small startup - Mark took every opportunity he could to raise awareness of the Bedjet and connect with more people who would enjoy the product. The desire to improve the Bedjet’s visibility led Mark to several rounds of funding on Kickstarter. With the successful Kickstarter campaigns, the Bedjet got on the radar for the folks at Shark Tank. The funny thing is - Mark had never even seen an episode of Shark Tank before the show contacted him! Jumping at the chance to appear on Shark Tank - Mark packed his bags and attended the tapping - all to no avail. The Sharks were convinced that the Bedjet would bomb - thankfully - they were wrong.  Even though the Sharks didn’t believe in the Bedjet - Mark knew better. He was convinced that the Bedjet was the solution that many people all over the world needed to make sleep a more enjoyable experience. Today, the Bedjet is selling like never before. The Bedjet is listed on Amazon, but Mark has been pouring more resources in his direct to consumer efforts, and he’s seen it pay off! Mark’s story goes to show you that you don’t need the stars to align to bring a successful product to the marketplace - you just have to make something people want!  Resources Mentioned on this episode www.Bedjet.com The Harmon Brothers on Inspired Insider Intro Music by Kidd Russell   Sponsor for this episode Rise25’s mission is to connect you with your best referral partners and customers. Lessons and Reflections from Three Top Direct Response Marketers with Brian Kurtz, Richard Armstrong, and John Carlton

This episode features three top direct response marketers - Brian Kurtz, John Carlton and Richard Armstrong. John is known as “the most respected writing teacher alive”… and the list of well-known marketers who reference John as their primary mentor for writing sales messages is staggering. He worked closely with direct response giants Jay Abraham and Gary Halbert for years… He has a SIMPLE SYSTEM that takes you step-by-step through the process called the simple writing system. Brian helped build Boardroom Inc., which is at its height, was a 150 million dollar company. Brian has overseen the mailing of over 1.3 billion pieces of direct mail over the past 30+ years and has worked alongside some of the top people in the direct marketing industry. Richard is one of the nation’s leading freelance direct response copywriters. He was voted the AWAI copywriter of the year in 2012. Richard is a two-time winner of the Caples Award – this is the “Oscars” of direct mail. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn: [2:05] Jeremy introduces his guests, Brian Kurtz, Richard Armstrong, and John Carlton. [5:30] John shares a lesson he learned from missing a Jimi Hendrix concert. [8:40] Brian talks about the regret he has missing out on time with his mentors. [13:00] Richard talks about lessons he learned his early career. [16:30] The guys talk about how royalty based copywriting started. [23:45] If the boss is happy - something is wrong with the copywriting. [26:15] How John got started as a copywriter. [32:15] You don’t choose your mentors, they choose you. [39:45] Why you should focus on delivering value. [42:00] Richard talks about mentors that impacted him over the years. [45:30] John talks about meeting Jay Abraham. [48:00] John opens up about the books he has authored. [54:00] Brian talks about his book, Overdeliver. [1:02:00] Richard shares which direct marketing books he loves. [1:04:30] Why copywriters are not con-artists and other reflections. In this episode… What does it look like to get some of the best-known names in direct response marketing for a no-holds-barred conversation? Imagine all of the unique insights they’d have to share - look no farther! On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from three top direct response marketers - Brian Kurtz, John Carlton and Richard Armstrong. In their conversation with Jeremy, the guys explain how they got started in direct response marketing, lessons they learned along the way, why focusing on providing value is critical, and much more. You don’t want to miss a minute of this fascinating conversation! When you look back at your journey - what sticks out? Do you have lessons or regrets that stand out more than others? If you could pass on some advice - what would you share? Looking back at their journey as direct response marketers - Brian, Richard, and John were kind enough to share some of their hard-fought insights. The common theme from their reflections centres on missed opportunities. From missing out on one of the last Jimi Hendrix concerts to failing to spend time with key mentors late in their life - the guys stress the value of taking the road less travelled. Did you know that one of the best ways to learn an industry or trade is to jump in and start providing value? It’s true! Too often - early on in their career - men and women are searching for a place to start without taking the time to find the best people to learn from. Imagine what it would have done for your career to spend a year or two simply learning from the top leaders in your industry. Brian, Richard, and John all attest to the value of sitting at the feet of those who have mastered their craft. When was the last time you really pushed the envelope? Do you like to take risks and move the needle or are more of the play it safe type? The truth is - in the business world - if you play it safe, you’ll never get ahead. The old saying rings true - if the boss is happy, the product isn’t good. As direct response marketers, the guys had to learn that making the client happy wasn’t the point - they had to create content that would appeal to the customer. You can imagine that navigating the tension between pleasing the client and creating effective copy wasn’t easy. Learning your craft and advancing in your specific industry is no small task. Many men and women can’t endure the challenges and roadblocks that arise in an intense industry like direct response marketing. Seeking to share their wisdom and expand their influence, Brian, Richard, and John have each authored books to help budding leaders. They want to do for others what guys like Jay Abraham and Gary Halbert did for them. To learn more from these brilliant minds in direct response marketing, make sure to check out their books - links can be found in the resources section at the end of this post. In this episode… What does it take to push through and overcome challenges in life and business? Do you have a plan to face adversity head on or will you cross that bridge when you get to it? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from innovator and entrepreneur Mark Aramli. In his conversation with Jeremy, Mark opens up about selling his product on Amazon, why he feels conflicted using Amazon, what it takes to keep knock-offs at bay, how to overcome challenges, and much more. You don’t want to miss a minute of this fascinating episode featuring Mark’s story! How would you respond if your businesses potential was limited by a distributor? You’d cut that distributor out, right? What if that distributor was Amazon? They are hard to cut out when they own a significant portion of the ecommerce marketplace! Mark Aramli feels the tension between life as an Amazon customer and an Amazon merchant. He loves the simplicity and ease of use that Amazon brings its customers, but he finds significant challenges working as one of their merchants. With this tension in mind - Mark encourages ecommerce sellers to avoid depending on Amazon for any sizeable portion of their sales. Difficulty with Amazon isn’t the only place that Mark has had to face and overcome challenges in his career. Back when BedJet was inching closer and closer to its launch date, Mark had to have a difficult conversation with his then fiance. It turns out that Mark’s wedding date and the rapidly approaching launch date of BedJet were too close to make anyone happy - the wedding had to be rescheduled. While Mark’s soon-to-be bride wasn’t happy - she powered through the challenge and supported Mark. As a sign of his gratitude - Mark was able to give his wife the wedding of her dreams. In this episode… Have you ever thought about writing and marketing a book to increase exposure for your business? Is the thought of writing a book too intimidating for you? What would it take for you to write a book? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from entrepreneur and author, Laura Gale. In her conversation with Jeremy, Laura opens up about her experience in the publishing industry, what it was like working with J.K. Rowling, why she loves helping fellow entrepreneurs, challenges she has faced, and much more. You don’t want to miss a minute of this fascinating episode featuring Laura’s story! Can you imagine working with the likes of J.K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, and other famous authors? What an amazing experience! While it was an opportunity of a lifetime - Laura Gale says that working with those authors had their fair share of challenges. The sheer scale of coordinating and marketing a book with such a famous author is no small feat. While working with those authors and many others - Laura learned key skills that would help her later on in her career when she decided to leave the traditional publishing industry behind. Why do entrepreneurs do crazy things like leave the comfort and safety of their careers and head out into open and uncharted waters? The truth is - they want to bring something to the marketplace that they know only they can bring. Leveraging her experience in the publishing industry - Laura set out on her own. The journey wasn’t all sunshine and roses - she faced her own set of challenges as she forged her path. Through all the difficulty that came her way, Laura remained convinced that more entrepreneurs and leaders needed to tell their story - that’s what keeps her going. Did you know that writing a book could help you expand your platform? It’s true! From politicians to business leaders - more and more leaders are taking the time to tell their story. While old school institutions like newspapers and traditional TV networks are going the way of the dinosaur - books still resonate with people. Something about telling your story - especially in a raw, honest, and compelling way - really connects with a wider audience. Just take a look at Amazon and the HUGE numbers of book sales - both traditional and audiobooks! If you haven’t considered it before - give it another thought - writing a book might be the right move for you and your brand. If you want to make an impression and get a result you’ve never had - you’ve got to do something outside of the box. Too often, business leaders get so focused on doing things the same way - that they fail to innovate! Laura Gale learned that if she wanted to make an impression on people - she had to get creative. From unique mailing efforts to taking the time to meet with an individual face to face - whatever broke from the same tired script - Laura tried it. Guess what? It worked! Laura began to receive positive results from her efforts. What can you learn from Laura’s story? Why You Should Test Your Message with Daniel Harmon Co-Founder of Harmon Brothers

Daniel Harmon is the co-founder and creative visionary at Harmon Brothers - where they use storytelling, humor and direct response to create social videos that sell products. They are behind some of the most viral ads and have collectively driven more than one billion views, over $300 million in sales, and revolutionized the way products are marketed. They have created Internet advertising blockbusters including Squatty Potty, Purple Mattresses, Chatbooks, FiberFix and Poo~Pourri to name a few.  Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn: [1:40] Jeremy introduces his guest, Daniel Harmon. [3:20] Daniel talks about growing up in a large rural family. [7:30] How did Daniel get involved with home security sales? [11:30] Learning to market to a larger audience. [16:00] How the Harmon Brothers got started. [24:20] Working with the folks from Squatty Potty. [29:15] How Daniel and his team create captivating videos. [34:00] Creating a good call to action. [37:50] A low moment in business for Daniel. In this episode… Why do some messages really connect with an audience while others fall flat? What does it look like to test your message before you broadcast it? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from entrepreneur and innovator, Daniel Harmon. In his conversation with Jeremy, Daniel opens up about growing up in a larger rural family, how he got involved with sales, what led him and his brothers to create Harmon Brothers, challenges they’ve faced along the way, and much more. If you want an inside look at how to form the right type of marketing messages - this is the episode for you! You’ve heard it said that necessity is the mother of invention - that was true in Daniel Harmon’s case! Growing up in a rural community and with a large family, Daniel and his brothers did whatever they could to make money. This entrepreneurial spirit drove the Harmon brothers to take their potatoes across state lines to sell door to door. What started as a whim ended up as a profitable business venture. This small taste of door to door sales helped shape Daniel’s career ambitions - he knew that he wanted to take this talent to a larger scale. You might be wondering - how did Daniel and his brothers go from selling potatoes to creating funny and effective marketing videos? The answer is - sort of by accident. Daniel’s brother was in a marketing class at Brigham Young University when his professor decided to have him try marketing a product on a whim. This freedom to create a fun and engaging video opened the creative floodgates for the Harmon brothers. Soon they had real data and evidence that their messaging and humour worked for selling products. It wasn’t all smooth sailing from that point - they had many challenges to face and lessons to learn before they would become the marketing powerhouse they are today. Finding initial success with their work on Orabrush’s marketing - the Harmon brothers decided to try their hand at a new product - the Squatty Potty. Since they had already worked as an “In-house” advertisement team, they thought they’d do the same with Squatty Potty, but that wasn’t the case. Instead, Daniel and his brothers had to come up with an Ad agency of their own - thus - the Harmon Brothers began. It doesn’t sound that unique or original, but that’s OK! You don’t need a splashy name when your work speaks for itself! You can head over to their website to learn more about their story. At the heart of Daniel’s story with his brothers is the idea of testing and adjusting your messaging to connect with others. What good will your well-polished message do if it fails to connect with your target audience? The Harmon Brothers’ approach works because it’s fun - doesn’t take itself too seriously - and it’s tested! You can search all you want for the “Secret sauce”, but the truth is - Daniel and his brother's test and adjust their message relentlessly until it hits the target. Don’t get stuck pushing the same dull message! You can learn how to improve your messaging game by learning at the Harmon Brothers Unviserity! Does it come down to having the right product or strategy? Could it be something else entirely? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from entrepreneur and innovator, Ross Andrew Paquette. In his conversation with Jeremy, Ross opens up about the original vision for Maropost, how the business grew, why getting a good team in place was key, and much more. If you want an inside look at how a successful business grew from the ground up - you are in the right place! Where did you get your drive and inspiration from? Did you grow up with a chip on your shoulder determined to make a mark on the world, or did you have people who invested in you and cultivated your abilities? For Ross Andrew Paquette, it was watching and learning from his father - even at a young age. Ross’ father was a dentist who knew the value of working hard and delivering quality results - he’s taken that same work ethic to his work with Maropost. Remember - you have a unique role as a leader! You can lift people up and inspire them if you make an effort. Is there a certain value or principle that looms large in your organization? If someone were to ask you - or better yet - if someone were to ask your team members what the number one value in your organization is, what would they say? At Maropost - Ross works hard to cultivate a good team environment. He believes that collaboration and teamwork are central to a thriving and successful business. As they say - the proof is in the pudding! Year after year, Maropost continues to grow in a positive direction while maintaining its core values. What can you learn from Ross’ journey with Maropost? Following in that same vein of team building and collaboration - Ross points to the personal relationships that he has fostered with his customers as a key factor in Maropost’s success. Think about it - the businesses that go the extra mile and try to create that human connection are the ones that make a lasting impact. While your organization might not have the resources that Maropost has, you can start taking steps in the right direction to make your customers feel valued. What steps will you take to start that process? What legacy will you leave? What long term impact of all your efforts with your company have? While it might sound odd to consider, it is helpful to start considering your long-term legacy if you haven’t already. Thinking about the legacy that he’ll leave behind - Ross decided that they should create Maropost Cares. Maropost Cares focuses on leaving the world better than before; it means giving endangered species a second chance; it means restoring ecosystems through conservation initiatives. Most importantly, Maropost Cares wants to leave a legacy of sustainability and responsibility. [12:15] A low moment in business for Daniel. In this episode… What does it take to make your business stand out by grabbing attention on the marketplace? In his conversation with Jeremy, Daniel opens up about how he and his brother create captivating videos, what it takes to create a good call to action, challenges along the way, and much more. If you want to know how to stand out in a crowded field - this is the episode you don’t want to miss! When you think about some of the most successful and attention-grabbing marketing campaigns, you usually don’t think of the whole testing process. Did you know that testing and adjusting based on audience feedback is a critical aspect of grabbing attention? Think about all the money that was wasted on Super Bowl ads last year because they failed to test their content with actual customers! Don’t let your messaging come across as boring and flat - learn how to seek feedback and adjust your approach accordingly. Make sure to check out the link to Daniel and his brother’s website located in the resources section at the end of this post. Imagine watching a funny and engaging video that leaves you wondering - what was the point? That is the wrong message to send to your prospective customers! If you want to reach the right audience - you’ve got to be willing to make the ask and help them get there. It might be worth it for your business to try giving away samples or connecting your offer with a money back guarantee.
