acknowledging your feelings and the way that you're reacting to the
things that are happening to you because the very first step to
mindfulness is acknowledgement. Then from there you can get better at
how you handle those feelings that you've just acknowledged. The very
first thing is you have to start becoming aware of your words, your
actions, your feelings, your state.

Effect on EmotionsI have more control over my emotions. More lucid to think before I act.
Thoughts on BreathingI
have to control my breathing because I do breathe hard and I've noticed
that I control my breathing more. I do breathing exercises but I can't
get into them. My wife will tell me, why are you breathing like that, so
I am mindful about how I breathe.

would ask them, "is what you're doing working?" Maybe you need to do a
little less. Maybe you need to be mindful of all these things you're
trying to accomplish; where is it going? A lot of times you can be so
busy doing a bunch of stuff, but then where's all this stuff going? I
used to work with people like that. Why are they that busy? Are they
just trying to look busy? Putting the rubber to the road is the more
important thing. Sometimes it doesn't take as much as you might think it
might take. Be mindful of your plan and your strategy to get there.

definitely been a huge way for me to process difficult emotions. I
think it was definitely easier for me to just ignore difficult emotions,
but mindfulness has allowed me to just sit with those emotions so I can
fully deal with them as opposed to just ignoring them.
Thoughts on BreathingBreathing
is a huge part of my mindfulness practice. Whether it's surfing or
working out or doing occasional transformational breathing classes or
just sitting at home, breath allows me to lift weights or run more or if
I'm sitting at home it allows me to facilitate getting into that state
where I'm at that peaceful sense of mind.

Effect on EmotionsNow
if I have frustration or anxiety, I do not have to reach for food. I
just sit for a moment, and think, why am I feeling this way. I just stay
in this moment and then I realize what it is. Then I see if I can solve
this problem. I stay in the moment and try to realize what it is.
Thoughts on BreathingI
am learning to improve in this area. I am good about taking in a deep
breath and letting it out. If I am frustrated or have anxiety, I will
just sit take a deep breath and let it out slowly for a few seconds.
It's amazing how that feeling [of anxiety or frustration] dissipates.

Advice for Newbie
The
first thing they have to do is admit that they're having an issue and
they don't know what to do about it. You have to admit you have some
kind of issue. Once you admit it, then you are open to looking for a
solution and you're open for help. Once you've done that, like I did,
then you can look out there and find someone else who's in the same
situation as you. Someone who has the same like mindedness, who needs to
do the same things. Whether you join a Facebook group, or you go online
and participate in a program like Weight-Loss Nation or other types of
programs. Find someone else who can be your buddy and can help each of
you be accountable on your journey.

has calmed that intensity big time. I'm much more at ease with what I'm
doing. Even if I'm busy and there's a lot going on I do it in a more
easy way, just more flow. I have more calm and more flow. If I do start
speeding in the mind, and going somewhere else, I know I can call on
that and come back to it. Even just in my mind, I'm in the car, or with
all the people or whatever, they don't know what's going on in my mind. I
just focus a little bit on my breath and calm myself back down and
reduce that intensity, kind of on the go.

Advice for Newbie
The
most important thing is that if you are a woman experiencing overwhelm,
you need to do something for yourself. The first thing you may say is,
'I don't have the time'. People get on a vicious cycle with looking
after their children, husband, demanding job. Women have taken on these
really big jobs in the last twenty or thirty years, but they didn't take
away very much. They still try to be the perfect wife/mother and
homemaker. I would say you must make time for your mindfulness and find a
resource, listen to the Mindfulness Mode Podcast, or find any other
mindfulness website or resource and just try it. Make the time. A lot of
women do yoga, or other kinds of moving meditations or swimming. This
will pay back a hundred fold.

that it's ok to express my emotions and not to suppress everything. Now I
know it's not weak of me to have these emotions. I'm still a man, even
though I might express emotion.
Thoughts on BreathingBreathing
is what I use to keep myself focused on the present moment. It's a huge
part of our health. If we have a poor breathing pattern, it can screw
up a whole host of other things. Breathing is the only thing we can
concentrate on right now, and it just reminds us that it's happening
right now. I imagine my breath and I imagine the little particles of air
going in and spreading throughout my body. This brings me to the
present moment and to what's going on inside my body.

Effect on EmotionsMindfulness sets my mindset for the day. It can either settle it, or by not doing it, be anxious.
Thoughts on BreathingIt's
a good thing to do on a day-to-day basis. When overwhelmed, I take some
time to just take deep breaths and let it out. I don't do it in public,
I'll just step to the side and give myself time to reset.

Take
it one moment at a time, meaning reflect upon yourself. Don't try to
take on the whole world. Don't try to take on more than you should.
Start with something simple, something you know. Try being mindful of
yourself. What is your state of being, what is your world like at that
moment and then go from there.

Effect on EmotionsIt's
[mindfulness] definitely helped me to not have so many peaks and
valleys. I would say my first bout of depression that I ever had in my
early thirties, when I closed my first business, a yoga studio which I
had for five years, it really helped me to recognize that depression
which was showing up for the first time ever in my life and to be able
to experience it and move through it rather than getting sucked down
into it.
Thoughts on BreathingBreathing
is so important. When I originally was studying vocal music, we spent a
lot of time in music classes learning how to breathe so that we can
produce a certain quality of sound. When I stopped studying music, I
sort of lost that connection to my breath. Coming back to the yoga and
meditation practice, I was able to reconnect to that as the quickest
tool to drop into when I find myself in a tricky situation.

Advice for Newbie
I
would say to just resist the urge to get frustrated. I think there's a
tendency to feel you're not doing it right or other people are doing it
better than you or you're never going to be able to fit it in with all
of the other things that you're doing. If you can just acknowledge that
right in that moment as you're having the awareness that you feel
frustrated, that you've just become more mindful in that moment of
having that awareness of frustration. It's sort of like success.

Effect on EmotionsMindfulness
allows you to go from being reactionary to responding and there's a
very big difference between the two. Mindfulness allows you to stay
present, not react, come from the right place and not be triggered by
past events that have nothing to do with the moment that you're
currently in.
Thoughts on BreathingBreathing
is a connectedness. It helps us to realize our thoughts that impact our
breathing, when we're under stress. [Our breathing becomes] very
shallow and rapid. When we control our breathing we control our body; we
control our thoughts. It's a connectedness that we're all one, we're
all whole, we are connected to the rest of the world in that same way.
It's kind of a centering and a grounding practice that when things get a
little bit lucy-goosy, focus on the breath, come back into your being
and then start again.
