A World Built On Radical Generosity with Kat Murphy

Before we begin, let me tell you about a live training I’m giving on November 23, called How To Plan Your 2022 Social Media Marketing Calendar. You can get all the details and sign up at my website, www.jcsocialmarketing.com/calendar GivingTuesday 2021 is right around the corner. Is your nonprofit prepared to promote your organization’s mission to potential donors and volunteers? When executed effectively a strong GivingTuesday campaign can help your nonprofit ramp up fundraising and donor engagement going into the New Year. 34.8 million people participated in GivingTuesday 2020, a 29% increase over 2019. $2.47 billion was donated on GivingTuesday last year - in ONE DAY!  The vast majority of these gifts came from smaller dollar donors, giving under $100 at one time. My guest this week is  Kathleen Murphy, who leads the digital strategy for GivingTuesday. Before joining the team, she led Illinois’ GivingTuesday Community Campaign, #ILGive. Kathleen teaches nonprofits how to raise awareness, change minds, engage hearts, open wallets, and rally people to action. Her past experience includes community organizing and campaigning on Chicago's south side and leading communications at Forefront, Illinois’ statewide social impact association. Here are some of the topics we discussed:Why GivingTuesday is NOT a 24-hour money grabHow to leverage the power of the day if you aren't raising money How GivingTuesday and the generosity of donors smashes the myth of donor fatigueExamples of campaigns that harnessed the spirit of generosity and givingConnect with Kat: https://twitter.com/kat_murphytoms https://twitter.com/givingtuesdayhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/kathleenmurphytoms/Do me a favor? [SOLO] Why Nonprofits Need to Stop Hating On Giving Tuesday

Before we begin, let me tell you about a live training I’m giving on November 23, called How To Plan Your 2022 Social Media Marketing Calendar. You can get all the details and sign up at my website, www.jcsocialmarketing.com/calendar Hello, and happy November! The leaves are falling, the PSL is in full force, and that means one thing: I’ve been seeing a lot of articles pop up lately around whether or not nonprofits should participate in GivingTuesday. Vu Le famously called it the “nonprofit hunger games” - one of my favorite books - and many thought leaders and fundraising experts have come out on both sides of the fence as to whether or not it’s worth the time and energy. I think GivingTuesday, both as a concept and in practice, is important, and I continue to defend it in the face of so many detractors for a few reasons. As a disclaimer, you should know that I have never been paid a cent by GivingTuesday, but I do have friends and colleagues that work there. I firmly believe that the debates around whether or not to participate in Giving Tuesdays are all completely missing the point. Here’s my take. Do me a favor? And stop making assumptions about who's in control - and who's working for who."Good news! The Unavoidable Power of Facebook Fundraising with Nick Burne

GivePanel is the lead sponsor of the Nonprofit Social Media Summit! Click here to get your ticket -  it's all virtual on November 2-3, 2021. Despite what you may think of Facebook's ethical practices, nonprofits around the world rely on the social network to connect with donors and raise money every day.  Over $5 billion has been raised with Facebook birthday fundraisers.  Facebook Challenges have raised more than $50 million for nonprofits in the last 12 months alone.84% of Facebook users share to show their support for a cause and highlight issues that are important to them. There is overwhelming evidence that nonprofits of all sizes can make a serious impact and raise real money on Facebook (and Instagram). So why is there still so little actionable data on how to do it effectively? In this episode, I ask Facebook fundraising expert Nick Burne about the power and potential of Facebook & Instagram fundraising. Nick is the Founder & CEO of GivePanel - a platform that helps over 200 nonprofits manage their Facebook Fundraising (and helps them acquire the donor data). Here are some of the topics we discussed:The Facebook Fundraising Benchmarks ReportWhich causes are seeing the highest growth in Facebook fundraiser incomeHow to use Facebook Group Challenges to raise money and engage your communityThe biggest mistakes nonprofits make when attempting to raise money on Facebook A Nick Burne quotable: "Fundraising is about people and about human beings. So our philosophy is what we call the H two H - human to human. Fundraising is a human thing... I don't see supporters as data. I see supporters as people you can have a relationship with."Connect with Nick:https://givepanel.com/blog/https://twitter.com/nickburne https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickburne/ Do me a favor? Ethical Storytelling in Nonprofit Communications with Caliopy Glaros

Do you struggle to portray your program participants as their own agents of change, while admitting that they also need your organization’s help? Do you worry about jeopardizing the dignity of the people in your stories for the sake of raising money? Do you find yourself debating ethical storytelling principles with colleagues who don’t see eye-to-eye?Tough but important questions - and Caliopy Glaros has us covered.   Caliopy (CAL EE OH PEE) is the Principal Consultant at Philanthropy without Borders, a firm which provides strategic guidance on donor travel, ethical storytelling, and virtual engagement. She has helped organizations in more than sixty countries around the world build storytelling processes that are contributor-led, donor-educating, and money-raising, all while instilling principles of ethical storytelling in their teams. Here are some of the topics we discussed:When donor behavior doesn't line up with your organizational values What it means to have an ethical storytelling strategy and processHow nonprofits can share stories authentically and without tokenizing the subjects of the storiesHow nonprofit staff can get buy-in from their teams and co-workers when changing their strategy around storytelling A Caliopy Glaros quotable: "In our communications we actually have the potential for changing some of the beliefs and behaviors that have contributed to and held up these very inequitable systems... We have a chance to counter that in our narratives, and be influencing our donors, and be bringing them closer in to our organization as partners who embody these shared values - not just asking for cash." The Secrets to Keeping Your Donors with Lynne Wester

When the world is spiraling, nonprofits give the world hope. However, we often falter when showing donors the difference that they made and make every day - and convincing them that they made the right decision to support us. That's where Lynne Wester comes in - thankfully! If you know Lynne, the Donor Relations Guru, then you know that she pulls no punches and does not hold back in her opinions, her expertise, and her generous advice. She is one of my absolute favorite speakers and thought leaders in fundraising, donor relations, and philanthropy.  Lynne's guidance has led organizations to be recognized on the national stage for fundraising innovation, creative communication, and groundbreaking donor relations work. In this episode, we dive deep into what Lynne calls "the gospel of gratitude" - how are we serving those who make our work possible? How can we look at people and truly value them - no matter how much they give to us? And how can nonprofits further inclusivity by making daily decisions, large and small? Here are some of the topics we discussed:Why the pandemic was actually a good thing for donor relations What are the ways that we can see giving through a DEI lens and practiceHer advice on coordinating in-person eventsWhy she encourages nonprofits to drop their giving societiesHow to create an "attitude of gratitude" instead of a "culture of philanthropy" A Lynne Wester quotable: "Everybody keeps saying they want a culture of philanthropy. I want a culture of generosity."And, one more: "We need to look at people and value them far more than their monetary gift." [SOLO] Should Nonprofits Leave Facebook?

What a week to be working in social media.  If you manage social media channels for your nonprofit, if you are on them in your personal life, or even if you just pay attention to the news, then you have undoubtedly heard about Frances Haugen, the Facebook whistleblower. The claim is that, as Haugen says, Facebook’s products harm children, stoke division, and weaken our democracy.  However, I don't think quitting full stop is an option for many nonprofits, and for many marginalized communities who rely on the platform to communicate and organize.   So where do we go from here? I recorded this special episode today to answer these questions: What to do next with all of these revelations? Should we all up and quit Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp? What are the solutions if we can't quit? You’ve heard what I have to say. Now I want to hear from you. Tag me on Twitter @JuliaCSocial and let me know what you think the future holds for Facebook.   Do me a favor? Digital Fundraising Tools for People-Powered Movements with Santiago Rosales

How can small nonprofits build a truly engaged following on digital channels? Do we need a huge team to manage this, and an even bigger budget?  And how can we strategically leverage digital tools to get younger generations involved in our work? In the latest episode of Nonprofit Nation, I sit down with Santiago Rosales of ActBlue for some real talk on how to build and run a flexible, inexpensive, and empowering digital fundraising program. We cover all things digital - advocacy, email, SMS, and social media. No stone left unturned!  Santiago Rosales is a queer, disabled Chicano from Houston, Texas who is grounded in the struggle for racial and economic justice. His organizing journey started at the University of Texas where he advocated to improve the experiences of students of color and first-generation students. After college, he worked at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities supporting state advocacy to protect and expand safety net programs. In 2020, he organized bilingual field, digital, and constituency organizing programs for campaigns in Houston and Austin, Texas. Santiago’s focus at ActBlue is on supporting organizations that empower voters and fight voter suppression. Outside of work, he is a stay-at-home dad of several plantitas.  Here are some of the topics we discussed:Why diversity, equity, and inclusion work is not something to check off the To Do list - no matter your nonprofit missionThe 3 basic principles of digital fundraising (no matter the tool)What skills are required to run a successful digital fundraising program How to get younger people involved in your work, and grab their attention on social mediaA Santiago Rosales quotable: "Folks who invest in nonprofits who are small dollar donors really care about a lot of things and they view donating as part of their activism as part of their volunteering. And so if you can communicate how your organization is driving an impact, that goes a long way."Connect with Santiago:https://twitter.com/santiagorosal https://www.linkedin.com/in/santiagorosales/ActBlue: https://secure.actblue.com/abcharities  Do me a favor? How to Live a Balanced Life in a Digital World with Meico Whitlock

Do you have visions of waking up without fear? Without the terror of a backlog of emails queued up and demanding your immediate response… or the latest batch of social media updates from people you don’t even know that well clamoring for your attention?Meico Marquette Whitlock has been there.
