The Average Fitness Consumer with Bernie Rhinerson
Send us a textI’ve been blessed to have some truly remarkable guest on this podcast. I’ve had authors, subject matter experts, physicians, and PhDs. I’ve also had inspirational guests who have overcome incredible obstacles and undergone amazing transformations. And I’ve loved every one of these conversations, and I’ve taken something away from each and every one of these interviews, and I hope you have as well. Today’s guest reached out to me and asked if I’d be interested in interviewing an average senior fitness consumer. Someone without in-depth fitness expertise, but rather is representative of the general silver edge over 50 population… perhaps someone like you. So today I present an interview from the perspective of the average fitness consumer. But in editing this podcast it struck me… perhaps this story isn’t so “average” at all, in fact, I found it extraordinary. I struck me in listening back to this episode that those of us over 50 who are prioritizing our health and fitness aren’t average at all, but exceptional. And since you’re listening to this podcast right now, I’m guessing your story is exceptional as well.My guest today is Bernie Rhinerson. Bernie is a self-described 70-year-old average fitness consumer. Bernie was never particularly active or health conscious until he hit retirement at about 25 pounds overweight. Somehow a book founds its way into his hands that stated your new career after retirement is your health and fitness. So Bernie joined a gym, hired a trainer, and lost his excess weight and now at age 70 is as strong and as fit as he’s ever been in his life. But he’s not done yet, Bernie has plans to increase his strength and fitness, to up-level his nutrition, in order to pursue the things he’s passionate about. Join us as Bernie shares how he started his fitness journey at age 60, how he got into the best shape of his life at age 70, and where he plans on going from here.We mentioned the following resources in this episode:Bernie’s Instagram - @bernieprBernie’s Blog - https://sdbernie.blogspot.com/Book – Younger Next Year - https://www.amazon.com/Younger-Next-Year-Strong-Smart_Until/dp/1523507926/Want to rewrite the narrative of your life and health? Making Waves with Buzzy Kerbox
Send us a textI was born in Santa Monica, CA, but moved to rural southwestern PA when I was very young, maybe five or six. There I lived on a beef cattle farm with cows, chickens, horses, an apple orchard, and a gigantic vegetable garden. Somewhere in my mid-teens a divorce landed me in a teeny tiny ex coal mining town, where… well… let’s just say I didn’t exactly flourish. And right before my senior year of high school my mom, step-dad, and my three younger siblings moved to Wilmington, NC, which at the time was a small sleepy beach town in southern NC. I stayed in PA with family friends to finish my senior year. After finishing my senior year of high school – and I just barely managed to graduate, probably to the surprise of my friends and family – I had to move to Wilmington. But I didn’t want to. All my friends were in PA, and my only impression of NC at the time was Mayberry from the Andy Griffith show. So I came down to the beach under protest, vowing that I’d get a job, save up some money, and move back as soon as I could. But when I got here something magical happened. The ocean spoke to me in a powerful way. I had been to Virginia beach for a week on summer vacation a couple of times, but this was different. I somehow felt connected to the ocean, I found both excitement and calm when I was in or near the water. My youngest brother had taken up surfing, and my dad bought me a garage sale surfboard to get started. And I was hooked. And I mean addicted. I loved surfing and it became the center of my universe. I obsessed over it. I learned to read the weather, the tides, and the water. Make no mistake, I was still a teenage train-wreck. I drank heavily and abused pretty much any drug I could get my hands on, and in general live an unhealthy lifestyle – but when I was in the water everything was different. I lost myself, my problems and hang-ups fell away, all my angst, anger, and emotional sewage evaporated when I was in the ocean.I fell madly in love with the sea, and I never did go back to PA. I eventually found other ways to stay connected to the ocean - I fished, swam, boated, and dove. It was my passion and my therapy, my obsession. And one of my surfing heroes back then was a guy with the unlikely name of Buzzy Kerbox. Buzzy was a pro surfer and was always in the top ten surfers in the world, but I was drawn to him because of the crazy things he and his buddy Laird Hamilton were doing. They were constantly innovating and pushing boundaries. They were the first people I saw wind surfing in gigantic waves, they were towing each other into monstrous waves in a tiny boat, they were paddling ridiculous distances in very rough seas. They were redefining what’s possible. My guest today is Buzzy Kerbox. Buzzy is an author, public speaker, model, iconic waterman and big wave surfer. In today’s episode Buzzy shares how he went from an Indiana boy to one of the best surfers in the world. Along the way he shares his experiences as a professional surfer and model, and how he says in great surfing shape at age 65. Below is Buzzy’s contact information as well as links to the resources we mentioned in this episode.Website - www.buzzykerbox.comBook – Making WavesInstagram - @buzzykerboxFacebook - @bkerboxDocumentaryWant to rewrite the narrative of your life and health? Change Yourself - Change Your World with Tim James
Send us a textI used to think of health as an either/or proposition – either you’re unhealthy or you’re healthy. But I now think of health as a continuum – with extremely poor health on one end, and optimal health and vitality on the other end. And if we labeled this continuum from one to ten – with 1 being very poor health, and 10 being optimal health and vitality, I’d guess that most of us over 50 are somewhere in the sub-five category. And in most cases these people don’t realize it. Let’s say they’re a 4 – but they’ve been at a 4 for so long that it’s become their baseline. These people often don’t understand the vast improvements in quality of life available to them. This was certainly my experience in my mid-forties. It took a health scare to shake me up, to awaken me. To bring me to the realization the “not being sick” is NOT the same thing as having optimal health. As Dr. Tracy Gaping called it in the last episode, I was at a crappy health baseline, and didn’t realize it, because it was my normal state. But why is that? Why are so many of us living in states of poor health without realizing what’s available to us? For one, the deck is stacked against us. We’re told in midlife things like it’s all downhill from here, that fat gain and muscle loss are a natural part of aging, that us older people need to slow down and take it easy. Industrial food companies and big pharma certainly don’t help our cause, ultra-processed foods make us sick and pharmaceutical companies sell us their cures… except they aren’t really curing anything – they’re treating symptoms and do nothing to attack the root cause of our health issues. We’ve traded health for convenience, to the point where even the water we drink and the goods in our homes are making us sicker. It’s a bit like the movie the Matrix, where many are unaware of the reality of what’s happening. But then though some twist of fate we are given a choice – we can take the blue pill and return to our crappy baseline, or we can take the red pill and choose optimal health. Since you’re listening to this podcast right now, I’m guessing you’re a red pill person. And today’s episode is definitely a red pill episode. My guest today is Tim James. Tim is the founder of Chemical Free Body and the host of the Health Hero Show podcast, and as you’ll soon hear, he’s very passionate about optimal health. Tim shares his wild red pill awakening moment, and in this episode he gives us some practical tips that we use to up-level our health – even when the odds are stacked against us. This was a fun and eye-opening conversation, and I know you’re going to take away a ton of valuable information. You can connect with Tim in the following ways:Website – www.chemicalfreebody.comYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4IL0twSUqtlNaqwo1FbRnAFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/chemicalfreebodyInstagram - @chemicalfreebodyguyHealth Hero Show Podcast - https://chemicalfreebody.com/podcast/ We mentioned the following resources during this episode:Documentary Movie – Tapped - Want to rewrite the narrative of your life and health? The State of Men's Health with Dr. Tracy Gapin
Send us a textBefore we get started with today’s episode, I want to speak to you ladies. This episode is as much for you as it is for the men. When today’s guest Dr. Tracy Gapin first approached me with the topic of men’s health, I was initially reluctant, mainly because according to my statistics this show’s audience is close to 50/50 men and women. But Dr. Gapin informed me that a large number of his clients are actually referred to him by their partners – most commonly their wives. And let’s face it, us men can be pretty bull-headed when it comes to seeing a doctor, in fact many of us men do a really crappy job of self-care. I actually considered titling this episode something generic, just to trick you ladies into clicking play, but ultimately decided against that. So again, thank you so much for tuning in, and thank you collectively for pushing us men to take better care of ourselves.OK, guys listen up. We – myself included – need to step up and take ownership for our health, and that includes our sexual health. I know from personal experience that this can be an extremely sensitive topic – it can be embarrassing, awkward, and downright painful. So, my hope is that after listening to this episode you’ll get your hormone levels checked and then – depending on the results – take appropriate action. This was an insightful and informative conversation, so thanks for tuning in.My guest today is Dr. Tracy Gapin. Dr. Gapin is a board-certified urologist and founder of the Gapin Institute where he specializes in individualized cutting-edge health care. In this episode Dr. Gapin shares his own men’s health journey which led him to where he is today. Dr. Gapin describes the state of men’s health today – and it’s not a pretty picture – and gives us a ton of information and tips on how to improve our lifestyles to optimize our hormones. He also discusses testosterone replacement therapy – he tells us the warning signs of low testosterone and discusses exactly who is a good candidate for this treatment. Along the way we discuss cutting edge aging research, new peptide therapies, and the safety and efficacy of testosterone replacement. The Happiness Warrior Eric North
Send us a textLet me ask you a personal question – are you happy? I mean you’re listening to the Over 50 Health & Wellness podcast right now, so I’ll assume you’re at least a little bit happy right now. But are you big-picture happy? I suppose we should define happiness. The dictionary states that happiness is a feeling of pleasure or contentment - or having a sense of confidence in or satisfaction with a person, arrangement, or situation. And I suppose that definition works for us. But we live in a time when unhappiness increasingly seems to be normalized. The global pandemic, our current political divisiveness, and the 24/7 media and news barrage have made us fearful and anxious. But I have to imagine that most of us want more happiness in our lives, we want pleasure and contentment, we want a sense of confidence and satisfaction. And while we may not have much control over pandemics and politics, we do have control over how we react to these things. Maybe what we need is a happiness warrior to help show us the way.My guest today is Eric North. Eric, aka The Happiness Warrior – is on a mission to forge a new path in a changing and challenging world. He wants to change the common narrative of fear, uncertainty, and unhappiness to a message of self-love and acceptance, to help lead us to living a life full of happiness. In this episode Eric shares his personal story of becoming the Happiness Warrior and his 5 Core Happiness Warrior Values.
