The Healing Power of Mushrooms with Stephanie Moyal & Jake Mellman

Text us a comment or question! This week, we ventured into a realm that's both ancient and cutting-edge – the world of functional mushrooms, explored through the entrepreneurial journey of cousins Stephanie Moyal and Jake Mellman, co-founders of Troop. Why mushrooms, you might ask? Well, the answer is as fascinating as it is profound. In our quest to remain vibrant and healthy in the second half of our lives, we often overlook nature's simple solutions. Mushrooms, as I've learned from Stephanie and Jake, are not just culinary delights but are packed with remarkable health benefits. Our conversation took an exciting turn as we delved into the origins of Troop. This wasn't just a business talk; it was a story of transformation, resilience, and discovery. Stephanie and Jake shared how their personal experiences during COVID led them to explore the healing properties of mushrooms. From experimenting with mushroom cultivation in a closet to creating one of the most innovative health-focused brands today, their journey is nothing short of inspiring. But this episode isn't just about Troop's journey. It's a revelation of the untapped potential of mushrooms in enhancing our health, especially as we age. We explored how these functional fungi can boost our immune system, enhance brain health, and potentially aid in the recovery process from various health challenges. For anyone over 50 looking to embrace a healthier, more vibrant lifestyle, this episode is a must-listen. It's an invitation to rethink our approach to wellness and to consider nature's humble yet powerful solutions. I invite you to join us in this fascinating discussion and discover how Troop is making mushrooms approachable and enjoyable. Coach’s Corner – The Lizard People Don’t Want You to Listen to This!

Text us a comment or question! In this no-holds-barred episode, I expose the propaganda war being waged for control over our health and independence. I invite my listeners to join me in an uprising - a rebel alliance - against the lizard people who want to keep us fat, sick, and reliant on their system.   In this episode, I tackle the blatantly misleading headlines about homegrown vegetables having a bigger carbon footprint than industrial farming. I break down the actual EPA statistics about the percent of greenhouse gases coming from cattle. Spoiler alert - it's not the main culprit. The lizard people just want you to think it is so they can control the food supply and get rich off unsustainable alternatives like lab-grown meat. This is just one example of the all-out lies and manipulation designed to deteriorate our health - so we feed the medical-pharma industrial complex. I expose the unreal amounts of money being made by keeping us unhealthy - we're talking billions and trillions here. They encourage us to eat nutrient-poor processed foods, sit too much, and fill our homes with toxins. Then sell us medications and treatments when we inevitably get sick. It's a vicious cycle, but it keeps their pockets lined.   In this call-to-action episode, I equip my listeners with the knowledge needed to opt out of the matrix. I give practical tips for taking health into our own hands - eating real food, getting strong, becoming our own healthcare advocates. Just imagine what would happen if we all got truly healthy - it would mean trillions of dollars lost for big medicine and pharma. Now that's a rebel uprising! I invite you to listen to the full riveting episode and join the secret Facebook group where the resistance is organizing. You can find all the links at [my website]. Say no to the lizard people and their insidious propaganda. Join me in the lean, strong rebellion - we are stronger than they want us to believe. Carol Adams YouTube Videohttps://youtu.be/UiRx62VGl8Q?si=s8ZKnioKA9AAFjsq👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective

Live Life More Fully After 50 with Adrian Jones

Text us a comment or question!I’m thrilled to share my latest podcast episode with an incredibly inspiring guest, Adrian “AJ” Jones. AJ had a massive heart attack at age 47 that completely changed the trajectory of his life. What emerged was a calling to help others bring more meaning and vitality into their second act.  In my conversation with AJ, we explore that pivotal moment when he found himself suddenly confronting his mortality. The clarity it triggered sent him on a quest to discover his true purpose and live out the rest of his years to the fullest.  AJ’s message particularly resonates with me and my audience of over-50s who are searching for what’s next. His own second chance at life ignited a passion for inspiring personal growth and transformation. This led him to leave corporate finance to launch a company called MORE aimed at helping Gen Xers flourish in midlife.  In the episode, AJ shares vulnerably about the loneliness epidemic plaguing modern middle age. He’s on a mission to create caring community for people trying to navigate major life transitions like empty nesting, retirement, loss of loved ones, and career reinvention.  I loved drilling into specifics about how MORE facilitates shared experiences, small group coaching, and online connection to foster personal breakthroughs. If you, like me, feel called to live your 50s, 60s and beyond with more purpose, meaning, and fulfillment – this conversation is sure to spark some “YES” energy about reigniting your potential.  I wholeheartedly believe anyone listening will feel moved, seen, and uplifted by AJ’s wisdom around midlife metamorphosis. Please have a listen and let the inspiration wash over you! Then drop me a note – I’d love to hear your key takeaways. You can learn more about AJ and MORE here: Website:www.wearemore.io Linked In:www.linkedin.com/in/adrian-jones-765a37/ Book – The Second Mountain by David Brookswww.amazon.com/Second-Mountain-Quest-Moral-Life/dp/0812983424/👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective

Coach’s Corner – How to Overcome Body Dysmorphia

Text us a comment or question! In this week's episode of the Over 50 Health and Wellness Podcast, I dive into the important yet rarely discussed topic of body dysmorphia. I start by getting vulnerable and sharing my own lifelong journey with body image issues, from feeling skinny and weak as a teenager to battling weight gain and “man boobs” in my 40s.  I explain that body dysmorphia doesn’t discriminate – it can affect people of all ages and body types. As we age, it’s easy to become distressed over the natural changes happening to our bodies. But it goes beyond just vanity - our body image is connected to our self-perception and sense of belonging in the world.   First, I define body dysmorphia as a disorder where you obsess over minor or even nonexistent flaws in your appearance. I emphasize that the first step is simply recognizing when our perceptions are distorted. Then, I share practical strategies for overcoming body dysmorphia: practicing mindfulness, expressing gratitude for what our bodies can do, setting reasonable fitness goals focused on health rather than looks alone, and seeking professional help from a counselor or support group. Next, I examine the double-edged sword of fitness. Exercise can boost mood and body confidence, but it can also trigger comparison and negative self-talk if we become preoccupied with chasing an unrealistic image. I encourage listeners to celebrate fitness accomplishments like walking farther or lifting heavier. Remind yourself that you’re not in competition with anyone but your own former self.  In closing, I reiterate that overcoming body dysmorphia is an ongoing journey. The key is self-awareness, patience, and self-compassion. I want listeners to focus on becoming the healthiest version of themselves at this stage of life. Our bodies and journeys are unique and beautiful. Sponsor Information – Living Libationswww.silveredgefree.com Nina Manolson Podcast - From Body-War to Body-Peacehttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-over-50-health-wellness-podcast/id1510989063?i=1000577211290👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective

How to Get in the Best Shape of Your Life After 50

Text us a comment or question!Today’s podcast episode is all about how to get in killer shape in your 50s, 60s, and yeah even your 70s. As someone nearly 60 myself trying to stay fit and healthy, I've picked up a thing or two on this whole healthy aging game.  And let me tell you, a lot of folks think it's all downhill after 50 when it comes to your strength and health. But from my experience? Complete BS. With the right changes to how you eat, exercise, manage stress - you can absolutely be in the best shape of your life even as you get older. In today’s show I break it down into what I call the three pillars of strong healthy aging - movement, nutrition, and recovery. I get into real practical steps - how walking needs to be your jam, why you gotta start smashing way more protein, why tracking your food is a game-changer. Oh and real talk - chronic cardio is not your friend! I speak from experience here.  Some of the stuff that I really geeked out on is why strength training is so crucial to stay powered up as you age. And I get into the science about how our muscle fibers change as we get older. Pretty fascinating if you're a fitness nerd like me! I also talk about how you gotta stop making changes from a place of feeling bad about your body - master your mindset first y'all! I live this stuff but even I struggled HARD with lame fitness habits and stupid fad diets myself back in the day. I made this podcast to keep it real with people looking to make changes. Whether you need an overhaul or just wanna take your health up a notch, have a listen! I mentioned the following resources during this episode: Silver Edge 1-on-1 online coachinghttps://silveredgefitness.com/coaching/ Silver Edge Metabolic Assessmenthttps://silveredge.ac-page.com/metabolic-assessment Free Guideshttps://silveredgefitness.com/free/ Silver Edge free Facebook grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/silveredgefitness Legion Athletics supplementshttps://legionathletics.rfrl.co/g478n👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective

Coach’s Corner – It’s Time to Level Up!

Text us a comment or question!I started today’s episode by giving you folks the “state of the Over 50 Health & Welnesss Show,” and that led me to my big ask of all of YOU, the listeners – I want YOU to be my Program Director! I want to know what you want in 2024 and beyond – guests, topics, release frequency etc.  Our main topic today is why 2024 should be the year you LEVEL UP your health and fitness game. When I first started, my messaging was hardcore about getting into the best shape of your life. That attracted mostly people who were already beasts.   So I changed my messaging to focus more on my own health struggles and journey from overweight and unhealthy to finding resources like The Barbell Prescription. I started speaking to THAT audience – people looking for help getting started on getting healthy. And that really resonated and changed my business. But recently I noticed some clients coming to us who were already pretty fit and healthy but felt stuck. They wanted help LEVELING UP – hitting new PRs, losing those last few pounds, improving sports performance, etc.   So I announced the launch of a new Level Up Performance Nutrition coaching program just for those types of clients who need a custom nutrition plan but already have dialed in workouts and health.  I wrapped up by challenging all listeners to make 2024 the year you LEVEL UP your health and fitness, no matter your starting point. Stay strong! Email me what you want to hear on this podcast in 2024 – what guests, topics, how many podcasts a week, what you like, don’t like, etc.coach@silveredgefitness.com Interested in our NEW Level Up Performance Coaching program? Record Setting Fitness Has No Age Limit with Kim Rahir

Text us a comment or question!Recently, I had the honor of interviewing a truly remarkable woman on my podcast - Kim Rahir, a 60-year-old competitive Olympic weightlifter. Kim’s incredible journey began in her late forties when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Despite her neurologist’s warnings to “take it slow,” Kim walked straight from his office into the gym, determined to reclaim power over her body.   What began as a small act of defiance soon transformed into a lifelong passion. As Kim devoted herself to weight training, she grew measurably stronger and healthier, astonishing her doctors with her recovery. They credited her dedication to strength training and proper nutrition with successfully managing her MS when other options had failed. By her early fifties, Kim was getting strong and learning Olympic lifts under an experienced coach. Now, just over a decade later, Kim is redefining what is physically possible after 50. Last year, at age 60, she won a silver medal in Olympic weightlifting at the European Masters Championship. During our podcast interview, Kim eloquently dispelled prevailing myths surrounding age and athleticism. With her dedication to diet and intense training, she is living proof that maintaining supreme fitness well into retirement age is achievable. Her energy and lust for life moved me deeply. She encouraged my audience to ignore the doubters and recognize that transformative growth remains possible at any age. At 60, as she trains for upcoming international contests, Kim Rahir exemplifies grace, wisdom, and mighty strength - both inner and outer. Hers is the story not of youthful potential but of a maturity that empowers and enriches our second acts. You can connect with Kim in the following ways: Website:https://kimrahir.com Email:kim@kimrahir.com Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/kim.rahir/👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective

Coach’s Corner – The Top 5 Worst Fitness Trends of 2023

Text us a comment or question! In this episode, we're going to wrap up 2023 with a special Coach's Corner segment, where I'll be sharing my thoughts on the top five over-hyped fitness and nutrition trends of the year.  Before diving into that, I want to remind you about our one-on-one personalized nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle coaching services. If you're over 50 and looking to optimize your health, shed some fat, and build lean muscle, now is the perfect time to get started. As of December 28th, 2023, we have eight coaching slots available for January, so don't hesitate to reach out! Now, let’s tackle the main content of today’s episode - the top five worst fitness trends of 2023. I’ve carefully selected these trends based on their mainstream popularity and the potential misinformation surrounding them. Here they are: 1. Plant-Based Diets: This trend is not about the diet itself but the extreme claims associated with it, like the demonization of meat consumption. It’s important to understand that a balanced diet is key, and eliminating any food group entirely can lead to nutritional deficiencies. 2. The Carnivore Diet: The exact opposite of a plant-based diet, this one promotes eating exclusively animal products. While it might work for some, it lacks balance and can be unsustainable in the long term. 3. Intermittent Fasting: Often marketed as a quick fix for various health issues, intermittent fasting isn't the magical solution it's sometimes made out to be. While it can be beneficial in some contexts, it's not a one-size-fits-all approach, especially for those over 50. 4. Prescription Fat Loss Drugs: Drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have gained popularity for weight loss, but they don’t encourage healthy habits. It's essential to focus on sustainable lifestyle changes rather than relying on medication for weight loss. 5. Cold Plunges: Gaining immense popularity, cold plunges are often overhyped. While they have benefits, they are not a substitute for foundational health practices like proper nutrition and exercise. In summary, my advice for the coming year is to focus on the basics: eat real food, exercise regularly, manage stress, and get quality sleep. Avoid getting distracted by these flashy trends that promise quick results but don’t deliver long-term health benefits. As we say goodbye to 2023, I wish you all a happy and healthy new year.
