If you focus on the hurt, you will continue to suffer. If you focus on the lesson you will continue to grow.Unknown Author
The challenges we experience in life almost always lead to our successes. Dr Catherine Yang is a testament to that.
Moving to Australia as a 15 year old with minimal English, she was able to get into Dentistry and is now a practice owner, Author and Speaker. Her journey to this level of achievement taught her lessons of managing and ‘stepping on’ her fear. And that is the genesis of her book ” Step on Fear”.
In this podcast we have the pleasure of discussing this journey, her advice, specifically tailored to young dentists as well as her influential involvement with B1G1, a company we are very passionately working with.
Find out more about her new book “Step on Fear” here, as well as Legacy; The Sustainable Development Goals in Action, the B1G1 book Dr Catherine Yang co-authored at the link for a free sample chapter.

#54 – [Re-Run] Dr David McIntosh
Imagine walking into your child’s room to find a stranger choking your child. Fear, panic and an immediate response would be instant, of course with a heroic end and a safe child. However, it is common to let our children snore, effectively choking, each night without investigation or treatment.
As dentists we are the gateway to the mouth. We see our patients regularly, we monitor their development and we should know the signs of sleep disordered breathing. And when we do, we can make a change in our patients lives.
This episode we have the absolute pleasure of speaking with Dr David McIntosh. David is a paediatric ENT with a special interest in airway, snoring and sleep apnoea. David is a published author on this topic with an excellent book called Snored to Death – I recommend everyone reads this. David runs multiple facebook pages in an attempt to educate and change the old ways of letting our children struggle to breath at night.
This was a monster episode with a ton of information. David was particularly generous with his time and this stretches close to 2hrs! Perhaps digest this one in a few different sittings but i have absolutely no doubt you’ll be engaged and take away a ton of Information.
We chat in depth about
Is it ok for a child to snore? How David became an ENT with a special interest in paediatric airwayWhat do dentist need to know about airway to pick this stuff upThe deal with tonsillitis and the magic number Of the cases he sees where tonsillectomy is indicated, 80-90% have not ever had tonsillitis Size is a big part but not the whole story Diagnosing in children – the facts Assesssment of tonsils and their gradesHow you can approach the airway and tonsil discussion with parentsWhat is the referral pathway once the issue is identified. Not all ENTs are created equal, some have special interests in the ear, others in the airway etc. Do your research to ensure the pt gets appropriate careShould adults snore?Tongue tie, a great framework to help you think about and advise on tongue tie.Physical tongue tie and a functional tongue tieA few questions from our Instagram page and Facebook Group

TIP#36: Temporomandibular Dysfunction with Dr Damian Teo
Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today.
It’s your weekly mentoring session.
Patient has a toothache that has been pestering them for a week. It’s getting worse, cannot tell if it’s the top or bottom and worse in the morning.
We see this all the time, and sometimes, it’s not the teeth causing the problem.
TMD is a crucial aspect of dentistry to understand, even if you’ll be referring them on for management. Diagnosis is critical and so we need to be aware.
We’re creating a 3 part series of episodes with Dr Damian Teo1. Bruxism (TIP #28)2. Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TIP #36)3. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (Out in April)
These are deep dives into some key topics that often leave us confused after our undergraduate training. I hope this helps open your eyes and perhaps inspires you to learn more.
Find out more from Dr Damian Teo and learn along side hundreds of others on his Facebook Group Sleep and TMJ Study Club and if you want to go to the next level, find his courses here. Dr Damian Teo made a point that he is always approachable on Facebook or even via email here.
Dr. Damian Teo
In his dentistry, Damian is passionate about looking “beyond the mouth” and treating the body as a whole. He believes dentists play an important role in being able to recognise airway/breathing issues, sleeping problems, and craniofacial pain (such as headaches, neck pain, and TMJ disorders). This led him to undergo extensive postgraduate training with world renowned specialists in the field of sleep medicine and TMJ disorders.
Damian is a member of the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA), and has a Post Graduate Diploma in Dental Sleep Medicine with the University of Western Australia. Damian also consults out of the Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre, and previously worked in Darwin’s first official TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre, where he exclusively treated patients for snoring, sleep apnoea, teeth grinding and TMD. Damian understands the value in working with skilled allied health practitioners outside of dentistry. He has presented talks and held seminars to medical and dental professionals to spread the knowledge that dentists can help one’s health and quality of life “beyond the mouth.”

Why bother completing a beautiful Endodontic therapy only to have the tooth fracture and fail weeks later?
How an endodontically treated tooth is restored is critical to its long term success and that starts from the first temporary.
Dr Pat Caldwell shares his views and advice on perhaps the most critical decisions made in endodontics.
Dr. Pat Caldwell
Patrick Caldwell is a registered specialist in Endodontics. He graduated in Dentistry with Honours from the University of Queensland in 1998 and then went on to work for the Royal Australian Navy, both ashore and at sea. TIP #33: Levelling up From Dental Noobness with Dr Sam Koh
Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today.
It’s your weekly mentoring session.
Early on in our dental careers, most of us are painfully aware that we’re just at the beginning of our learning. We’re at the base of Mount Proficiency, looking up.
The journey ahead can feel overwhelming and it’s easy to feel trapped in a state of dental “noobness” in those first few years.
Dr Sam Koh shines light onto those first stepping stones a young dentist can take to level up clinically and non-clinically as a practitioner.
As an accomplished young dentist, the founder of the Young Dentist Hub, serial lecturer and key opinion leader for several dental brands, Sam shares with us the top tips to accelerate upskilling as a dentist.
These practical tips will leave you clearer on what it takes to be more competent, proficient and confident as a practitioner. And ultimately, how to put one foot in front of the other and enjoy the steady climb.
Dr. Sam Koh
Dr Sam Koh is a Melbourne-based dentist, graduating from The University of Melbourne with First Class Honours. As the principal dentist of Orions Dental Taylors Lakes & Heyfield Dental Group, his special interests are in Cosmetic Dentistry and Orthodontics.
Following a personal recommendation from world-renown Orthodontist Dr Derek Mahony, Dr Koh has been awarded with a prestigious fellowship from the International Academy of DentoFacial Esthetics in New York, and also holds a fellowship in orthodontics as well as a fellowship from the Pierre Fauchard Academy in London.
Dr Koh is a proud member of the Colgate Advocates for Oral Health: Editorial Committee. He is also the co-founder of the Young Dentist Hub, which has over the last few years been at the forefront of dental education events in Australia for young dentists and students alike, both of which he is highly enthusiastic and devoted to mentoring. Further to this, he is also a KOL for KaVoKerr, as well as several other dental companies such as ClearCorrect and Pola Whitening.
