This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Most of us spend our University career providing care for free. Then, almost over night, we’re throwing into private practice and our work has a dollar value. How do we convey the value effectively and confidently? This is a crucial topic and one that is worth spending some time focusing on. Its a bedrock of communication. Dr. Tiv Nirmalann Dr Tiv is a renowned dentist with 17 years of experience and a director of a successful 6 chair dental clinic. A respected voice across dental forums, he has been a dental correspondent for the ADC and ADA, chair of the ADA Group R on the Mornington Peninsula and a speaker at many conferences to date. Dr Tiv believes that practising dentistry and teaching it are two very different skill sets, and he has perfected both over the years. His passion for teaching began while he demonstrated at the University of Melbourne dental school for over four years. Never afraid to hire a new grad, he has always put time into mentoring his dentists and takes pride in seeing them flourish. Over 17 years, he has seen it all and is ready to share his experience through coaching dentists of any level of experience who are ready to grow and improve. Coaching dentists is one of his true passions, outside of performing ‘hero-dontics’ and saving people’s smiles one tooth at a time. He is approachable, honest and friendly despite his trail record of over-achieving and being one of the best in his field. Busy running many projects, his time is precious and he will only choose to work with a limited number of dentists who share his passion for dentistry and have a willingness to grow, work hard and ready become the most successful dentist they can be. Finding a mentor is such commonly shared advice that it’s almost cliché. Yet, without a doubt it is a crucial part to your development. When I think about the mentors in my life, not all of them were two way relationships, some we’re people I listened to and absorbed wisdom from over many years. We’ve all had situations where we simply didn’t have the time to remove the entire restoration or we simply assumed the filling and thus tooth underneath was sound for endodontics. But is this really the best way to proceed? We learn Dr Pat Caldwell’s experience in with this and how it really is a crucial step to your endodontic workflow. Pat goes through his workflow and really lays out the best way to start your endodontics out the right way. Dr. Pat Caldwell Patrick Caldwell is a registered specialist in Endodontics. He graduated in Dentistry with Honours from the University of Queensland in 1998 and then went on to work for the Royal Australian Navy, both ashore and at sea. During this time he undertook advanced training in restorative dentistry and in 2002 sat examinations and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. In 2003 Patrick began a three year, full-time training program in endodontic therapy and microsurgery, graduating with a Masters of Dental Science in Endodontics.  He has since gone on to complete additional advanced training, graduating with a Masters of Clinical Dentistry in Implant Dentistry. In 2006, he returned to work with the Royal Australian Navy and was also engaged as a Visiting Specialist at the Sydney Dental Hospital. In 2009 Patrick moved to Shanghai, China where he was the only Endodontist in a city of 21 million people. Pat now runs the EndoSpot Skills School and works in private practice on the Sunshine Coast.
