Joel Jamieson on Metabolic Optimization, Longevity and the Future of Sports Supplements
Longevity, anti-aging and metabolic health are things that have fascinated me for years, so when my guy Joel Jamieson said he wanted to jump on a podcast and talk about this stuff, I was all ears.
In this episode, we start by talking about metabolic optimization – including what most people think of when they hear the word “metabolism,” and why Joel has a more well-rounded and diverse definition.
We talk about mitochondria – why they’re critically important for health, the numerous roles they play, and how to develop not only MORE mitochondria but higher-quality ones as well.
From there we dive into the brass tax and discuss how you can actually make an impact with all of this information. We talk about the tests you have access to (including both free and paid options), and then how to make impactful changes with your training, nutrition and supplementation to optimize your metabolism and help you live a longer, healthier life.
Needless to say this is a FASCINATING show, and I really think you’re going to love it.
Mitochondria do basically everything…they’re directing growth, proliferation, immunity, inflammation, a really wide variety of things. – Joel Jamieson
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
Joel’s background, how he got started in fitness, and what he’s up to these days
Our typical definition of “metabolism,” and how Joel would look at it in a more holistic fashion versus just “burning calories”
Metabolic optimization: What it is, and why you should care about it
Why your mitochondria are so important for not only conditioning, but overall health as well
The numerous roles your mitochondria play in health and longevity
What mitochondrial quality control is, and how it works
How to test for mitochondrial health and function – from free and easy to paid and in-depth options
Training strategies you should be using to improve mitochondrial quantity and quality
Why “you are what you eat” isn’t too far from the truth
How Joel is working to change the supplement game forever

October Q&A: Off-Season Program Design, Quick Workouts, and Layering Speed Development
We’re BAAAACCCCCKKKKK!
Even though it’s only been a month, it’s actually been more like 6-7 weeks since our last Q&A podcast episode, so I’m excited to dive back in.
This week we’re going to talk about program design for both gen pop clients and athletes, how to layer speed development in the R4 section of your workouts, and how to best prepare yourself as a young coach or trainer getting started in our industry.
Getting faster, stronger or more explosive are very nervous-system dominant activities…sue to the high intensities and the longer rest periods, you just can’t do as much in a short period of time. – Mike Robertson
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
The ABC’s of program design for untrained, un-athletic gen pop clients
Principles and examples of layering speed development to make your athletes faster
Thoughts on how to vacation, and why a short burst of work in the middle could pay big dividends when coming back
Is it possible to make quick, 20-30 minute workouts as effective as 60-90 minute sessions?
How to prepare yourself for becoming an S&C coach or personal trainer in today’s world
My view on mobility workouts, including when and where you should place them in your training week

19 Ninja Tricks to Write Better Training Programs
If you’re a trainer or coach, you have to write programs.
And trust me – there are tons of great resources out there to help you. I’m preferential to my Complete Coach Certification or Complete Coach Seminar, but again, I’m biased…
But here’s the thing – the X’s and O’s are all fine and dandy, but sometimes you want specifics.
Or nitty-gritty details.
And sometimes, you just want strategies to help you get in the right mindset to write an awesome training program!
So this show is all about programming – I talk successes, failures, and what I do to hedge my bets and make sure each and every program I write is legit.
And if you’d like to see the full transcription to this podcast, just head over here.
Am I chasing – and am I GETTING – the adaptation that I want?
Because sometimes the adaptation doesn’t happen in 4 weeks! – Mike Robertson
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
Why you should understand the foundational principles of program design FIRST.
Why basic is often better than complex.
The ONE THING you need to focus on when writing a program.
A popular question: How long should you go before changing your workouts?
The REAL REASON you program time under tension/tempo.
Keys to help streamline your program design process.
How off-days determine what you can really do during training sessions.
Why exercise selection is so critical – and how to make BETTER choices.
Thoughts on in-season versus off-season training.
The difference between an “Introductory” and “Deload” week – and when you should use each.
Why your goal should be to become a “Lazy Coach.”

Dr. Jenn Reiner-Marcello on the Intersection between Movement and Sports Science in Baseball
Dr. Jennifer Reiner-Marcello has 20 years of experience in the sports performance industry ranging from the private setting, college, and professional teams.
Over the last 7 years, she has focused her efforts in baseball including rehabilitation for the San Diego Padres and reconditioning for the Minnesota Twins.
While at the Twins, she created and deployed the reconditioning program including establishing, developing, and executing a systematic approach for coordinating motion-capture data, force-place mound information, video breakdown, strength and conditioning assessments, orthopedic evaluations, movement assessments, and hitting and pitching coaches’ assessments to reduce injury, improve skill, and drive performance.
Now I realize that’s a mouthful, but I promise we’re going to take all that and make it incredibly practical as we try to find the intersection between assessments, movement and sports science in baseball.
When you can piece all of those parts together, of what their strategy is and you see it play out in all these different scenarios, it allows you to narrow your intervention so that you’re much more targeted and can maybe get what you want to achieve on the first try. – Jenn Reiner-Marcello
This Week on the Physical Preparation Podcast:
How Jenn got started in the world of physical preparation.
A detailed overview of Jenn’s assessment movement assessment, from table tests to gross movements.
How to improve athlete buy-in with your testing and assessment process.
Merging sports science and tech with what you’re seeing in your movement and table tests to get a “big picture” overview.
The tech that’s currently driving baseball, and what it can tell you about an athlete’s performance.
How to make data work for you, versus letting it overwhelm you.
Knowing when to use specific tools to derive a specific outcome – i.e. how to be a sniper rifle versus a shotgun!

September Q&A: Program Design, Competing Demand and Gen Pop Athletes
We’re back with our monthly Q&A show friend!
These have been so much fun to record, and offers a nice balance between me hosting the show, and me (hopefully) providing some of my own unique thoughts and insights into training.
This week’s episode is going to cover a ton of questions around program design.
We’re going to talk about off-season training layouts, and how to write more effective off-season workouts.
We’ll talk about programming speed and power for your gen pop clients and athletes.
And in my favorite part of the show, we’re going to talk about how you can write programs that simultaneously develop strength AND conditioning.
Like I said there’s a ton of ground covered here, so I really hope you enjoy this episode!
The question you have to ask yourself is this: What qualities can you NOT develop during the competitive season? – Mike Robertson
This week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
How does the ground prep series work? Why do I feel so good after I do it? And when do YOU use it? – James
What’s your process for prioritizing the needs of your athletes when you have them for such a short time? And on the flip side of that, when you have a long time with an athlete, how do you pick where to start and how to prioritize? – Zach
How do you write programs incorporating both strength and conditioning together, but not choosing or using conflicting methods or techniques?! – Michael
How do you reconcile between increasing strength, but also restoring expansion/movement options/movement quality within a single program? – Alec
How do you know when you can safely implement explosive exercises for normal gen pop clients. How do you know when they’re ready? – Paulius

Build Savage, Athletic Beasts with Exerfly!
This week’s episode of the Physical Preparation Podcast is brought to you by Exerfly.
Flywheel training is a method of strength training where your athletes generate resistance by using the inertia of a flywheel instead of traditional gravity-based resistance training
By accelerating and then decelerating a disk, your athletes generate resistance in both the concentric and eccentric portions of the lift, WITHOUT the need for ridiculously heavy weights.
Standard free weight training is great for the early preparatory phases, but as athletes develop there’s more to it than just getting stronger at all costs.
At some point, you need to prepare them for the massive eccentric forces they’ll experience on the field, court or pitch – and with Exerfly’s motorized technology, you can increase the eccentric overload of the lift anywhere from 1-80%!
Exerfly is used by numerous teams in the NFL, NBA, over 50% of the English Premiere League, and numerous Olympic development programs.
Now as a small business owner you may immediately assume that an Exerfly is out of your budget, because we all know that every penny counts.
But Exerfly has you covered here as well – they offer 36-month, interest free-financing, so you can get started ASAP with your training and pay as you go.
And when you factor in a 30-day money back guarantee, 2- year warranty AND free shipping, the Exerfly really is a solid investment.

Doug Kechijian is a physical therapist and CEO and co-founder of Resilient Performance Systems. Resilient seeks to systematically explore the continuum between acute rehabilitation and athletic performance.

In today’s show, we’re going to focus on the hot button topic of return to play, and Doug’s thoughts on how we can improve and streamline the process.
Why would you rehab somebody that’s not able to perform well? The goal is to make them confident and perform to the utmost of their abilities. – Doug Kechijian
This week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
The fundamental differences between return to play (RTP) and simply “training.”
Is it return to play? Or return to PERFORMANCE?
Determining who should be doing what during the RTP process, and how to best share responsibility
How money and competition can negatively impact RTP
Why it could be a great idea to tell practitioners what NOT to do, versus what TO DO
Communication during the process, and how to ensure everyone is on the same page to get the athlete back

The 3 Biggest Issues Plaguing the S&C Industry
I’m ever the optimist, but there are definitely some things that need to be improved in our industry.
Burnout is a real thing, and it’s negatively impacting both young and old coaches alike.
Imposter syndrome can detract from your confidence and ability to coach at the highest level.
And with millions of pieces of information at our fingertips, it’s no wonder we’re overwhelmed and overloaded with regards to continuing education.
So we all know the issues that plague us – what’s more important is how do we address these them?
That’s what I try to unpack in this week’s episode of the Physical Prep Podcast!
Find ways, or find things, that you’re passionate about. That you’re excited about. That you want to dive in and learn more about. – Mike Robertson
This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:
Why burnout is almost inevitable in our industry at some point in time.
The differences between short- and long-term burnout.
Difficult questions you need to ask yourself if you’re dealing with burnout
What Imposter Syndrome is, and who it will impact.
Why dealing with Imposter Syndrome may actually be a positive vs. a negative.
How I had to learn back in the day, and why limited access to information was probably a good thing.
The value of mentorship and why finding role models is a critical element to your success.
How to use social media effectively as a fitness professional.
Why wages and compensation are an issue in our field, and some thoughts on how to better address and deal with this issue.
