BONUS: 4 Ways To Model Well-Being For Generations To Come with Toye Penny

In this busy season I’m so aware of how neglectful I can get about my own self care. When life feels crazy, the first thing to fall to the bottom of my priority list is ME. And I’m becoming increasingly aware of what I’m teaching my own children in this realm. So when Toye Penny reached out to share 4 ways to “Model Well-Being for Generations to Come” I knew I needed to hear what she had to say. Toye shares helpful, thoughtful and practical ways to love the next generation by loving ourselves well first.  Toye Penny is a Luxury Well-Being Strategist, Author of Love “Them”, Love You More, and creator of The Love You More Method℠. She specializes in helping High Performing CEO Moms put their oxygen mask on first so they can save everyone around them. Toye is a wife, mother to 3 daughters, and she seeks to intervene in women’s lives so children won't have to be the result of generational trauma passed down from their mothers. You can learn more about her work by going to ToyePenny.com. I loved chatting with Toye and hope you take as much from this conversation as I did.   Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 161: My Husband Is Not My Best Friend

One of my core friendship philosophies is that my spouse is not my best friend.  When I talk about this, people raise their eyebrows. Some assume our marriage is in trouble or that we're ill matched. It has become so common in romantic relationship culture to claim that you're married to your best friend that anything else seems unhealthy.  But while my husband Jeff is the most important person in my life, he is NOT my best friend. He's my partner. My co parent. My lover. I have best friends, and those relationships are different. Early in our marriage, when I tried to make Jeff be my best friend, the pressure for him (and me) to be all things to one another was too much.  We both needed and wanted lots of different types of relationships in our lives. Our marriage was stronger when we were closely connected to our friends. I write more about this in my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, but I wanted you to hear Jeff and I talk about it with each other. We don't have the exact same take on this topic, and our perspectives shift with age and in various seasons, as almost everything does. My hope is that this conversation will give you something to think about that counters the current cultural ideal that our partners have to be our best friends. Maybe it will become a talking point with YOUR partner or with your best friends.   FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   SPONSORS: Prose // Go to Prose.com/YOU to take your free in-depth hair consultation quiz and get 15% off your first order HelloFresh // Go to HelloFresh.com/YOU65 and use code YOU65 for 65% off your first box plus free shipping   SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode! Ep 158: Sexism and Ageism Had a Baby and Called It Menopause (a conversation with Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz)

This conversation is for anyone who will go through menopause, is currently going through menopause, or who has already gone through menopause.  Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz is my personal gynecologist and I trust her completely with the information she shares in this episode about the changes that women go through biologically, hormonally, physically, and emotionally. She's recently published Menopause Bootcamp: Optimize Your Health, Empower Your Self, and Flourish As You Age.  In this conversation we talk about her path to this work that combines holistic and modern medicine and her compassion and mission to help other women find the answers they need for this next stage of life.  Don't be scared by the "m" word. This conversation (and this information) is helpful, thoughtful, practical, and important.  FULL SHOW NOTES HERE   Learn more about Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz on her website Follow Dr. Gilberg-Lenz on facebook, Instagram, and YouTube Buy Menopause Bootcamp by Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz   SPONSORS: Apostrophe. Ep 157: True Crime as Entertainment (A Victim's Story with Amy B. Chesler)

This is an important topic. Since the explosion in popularity of the true crime genre over the last decade, I've questioned the ethics of crime as entertainment. Many of us have become obsessed with grisley stories of murder.  But have you ever actually talked to someone whose loved one was murdered? Would it change your opinion on the true crime entertainment genre?  This episode is a conversation with author, award-winning blogger, and actress Amy B. Chesler. Amy's mother was murdered in 2007 and her book Working for Justice: One Family's Tale of Murder, Betrayal, and Healing is about the events before and after this tragic event.  Amy surprised me with her take on the popularity of the true crime genre and it definitely affected how I consume these stories.  FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE MENTIONED in this episode: Amy B. Ep 156: FRIENDSHIP STORIES: Soul Mates Christi & Cindy

Introducing FRIENDSHIP STORIES: a new series where we explore different aspects of one of the most important relationships of our lives. We're going to talk about friendships that work and friendships that end. We're going to hear about soul mates, infidelity, friendship breakups, rogue bridesmaids, and more. Last year when I was researching for my book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, I did dozens of interviews with women about their friendships. We talked about the best parts and the worst pain of adult friendship and these stories were fascinating. I am excited to share some of them with you over the next few months leading up to the release of The Life Council. PREORDER The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs We're kicking off the series with soul mates Christi and Cindy, friends who met at work over twenty years ago when they both had toddler daughters. Though they met when their circumstances were similar, things soon changed when Christi's husband joined the military after 9/11, and their family began a life adventure that took them away from their home in Louisiana indefinitely.  In our conversation, Christi and Cindy share why their friendship works and how their opposite personalities have shaped them into better people. We talk about their first big fight, the fact that they're jealous of each other's spouses, and how their friendship has survived the long distances. They also give excellent advice for making new friends.  I wanted to kick off the Friendship Stories series with a beautiful story, and Christi and Cindy are such an excellent example of what it takes to find and maintain a friendship soul mate.  FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   SPONSORS: This episode is sponsored by PROSE. Ep 155: 3 Affirmations and 3 Habits for the New Year

Happy 2023!  As we kick off a new year, it's natural to think about what we want to do differently going forward. For me, I want to return to some habits that promote work/life balance and I'm activitely working to shift some of my mindsets by using affirmations.  Somewhere along the way I got out of the affirmation habit (I really stopped doing my whole morning routine in general) and while it was fine for awhile, I'm definitely noticing it now. The simple repetitions that you write in a journal or put on a sticky note on your mirror really do make a difference to your self-talk.  So I'm sharing the 3 affirmations and 3 habits that I'm working on in the early days of this new year, and I hope these help you as you think about the changes you want for 2023.    FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   MENTIONED in this episode: The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod Episode 79: 10+ Mantras and Affirmations for RIGHT NOW Episode 145: Time Anxiety Sign up for JOURNALING for GROWNUPS   SPONSORS: Journaling for Grownups by Laura Tremaine Zocdoc.com/YOU to download the Zocdoc app for free   SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode! Ep 154: 10 Things I Learned in 2022

The week between Christmas and New Years is one of my favorite parts of the year. I love the reflection, the final Best Of lists, the hope and excitement for the year ahead.  In the past, I've called this final episode of the year "10 TAKEAWAYS from 20__" but as I was journaling through all that had happened in 2022, I realized that (for me) it was all about the lessons learned.  From Covid wreaking havoc to writing my second book to welcoming two new members to our household, 2022 became a season of learning how to change.  I hope that listening back to the lessons I took from the year inspires you to think about the biggest takeaways of YOUR 2022.  FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   MENTIONED in this episode: jackass forever Max the Dog Trainer The Life Council (preorder!)    SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode!
