Ep 141: 6 Classic Novels You Should Read (with guest Colleen Powell)

This episode is for anyone who misses being a student.  I have a running list of classic novels that I want to re-read as an adult or read for the first time because I missed them in high school English class.  And so once a year or so, I force myself to pick up those novels that end up on All Time Best lists like this one. Or this one. Or even this one.  If you have the same literary burden, this episode is meant to help you choose a classic that won't be a total bore.  I'm joined by my friend and Patreon producer Colleen Powell, a former teacher and current audio editor outside of Chicago.  Colleen helps me with the Secret Stuff Book Club, and this winter we're reading a few classic novels starting this November with Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.  Join the Secret Stuff Book Club HERE.  In our conversations, Colleen and I are sharing both the best contemporary books we've read lately AND the best classic novels we'd recommend to anyone.  FULL SHOW NOTES HERE  Best Books We've Read Lately: The Guncle by Stephen Rowley A Swim in a Pond in the Rain by George Saunders The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune Oh William! by Elizabeth Strout   6 Classics You Should Read:   Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Catcher in the Rye by J.D.Salinger The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough Native Son by Richard Wright Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte Little Women by Louisa May Alcott SPONSORS: Noom. Ep 139: Ask Me Anything

Well this MONSTER of an episode is brought to you by my inability to pick and choose among the great questions I got for this session of Ask Me Anything.  I'm sharing stuff about our new house, reading nonfiction, kids & tech, purposeful "no's", how I've changed, and vulnerability hangovers.  (I might have a vulnerability hangover after this episode!) Thank you to all who sent in such question questions - I'm sorry I couldn't get to all of them.  I let it all hang out here, but for some of the questions that are even MORE personal, I'll be answering those over at Secret Stuff later this week.  FULL SHOW NOTES HERE Other episodes mentioned: Ep 136: 3 changes I'm Making To Find Balance Ep 104: Old Friends/New Friends  Ep 34: The Robbery   Sponsors: Honey. Ep 138: 10 Questions To Ask Your Kids

Fall schedules are SO full around here, and this time of year our family can easily go weeks without a meaningful conversation.  I've created 10 Questions To Ask Your Kids that you can pick and choose, modify for your family dynamics, or toss up one at a time over a week or so in order to spark great conversations between kids and adults.  These questions work for all ages (as long as the child can hold a conversation) and are a mix of light, fun, and deep.  FULL SHOW NOTES HERE After I share all 10 prompts, I have a short conversation with my own kids: Lucy, age 11, and Finch, age 9.  Sponsors Olive and June. Ep 137: 10 Things About Surviving Breast Cancer (with Bethany Winters)

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I have long wanted to have this conversation with my friend, stylist, and breast cancer survivor Bethany Winters.  Content Warning: Bethany speaks candidly about her experience in this episode. Please take care while listening.  In 2016, at age 47, Bethany Winters was diagnosed with Grade 3 Stage IIB Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. What followed was a year of intensive treatment, including chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and total hysterectomy. In this episode, Bethany shares 10 Things about breast cancer survivorship, and how it's not ever really over even when declared "cancer-free."  This is a tender and important conversation.  Follow @BethanySWinters on twitter Follow @BethanyWin on IG FULL SHOW NOTES HERE   SPONSORS Ritual. My health, hormones, and heart have been on a swinging pendulum and this fall I'm on a mission to get centered. Ep 133: Declutter Like a Mother (with Allie Casazza)

This episode is for anyone overwhelmed with all their STUFF.  But rest assured, this isn't just another minimalist approach to your home. It's not even a get-rid-of-everything attitude. Allie Casazza has such a relatable story about the drowning days of early motherhood and how it led her to an AHA moment about all her STUFF. Eventually she created the online movement - and now book - Declutter Like a Mother. In our conversation, Allie and I talk about the myth of the hot mess mom, how much your space matters, and more. I really liked her fresh perspective on something I've been tackling in my own life for years.  FULL SHOW NOTES HERE Learn more about Allie Casazza Follow Allie on IG Buy Declutter Like A Mother   SPONSORS: Ritual.
