What We Discuss with Billy McFarland: The ideas that sparked what Fyre Festival was trying to achieve on an epic scale and the shortcomings that transformed it into a fraudulent, failed mess. The countless things Billy would do differently if he could have a do-over. The numerous ways in which prisons are warehouses of unmet potential. How Billy stays safe and sane when he's in solitary confinement. Billy's biggest regrets and what he hopes to have a chance to accomplish after he's served the time he agrees he deserves. You're a mother of three, happily married to a wonderful man. But lately, you've been acting on your urges to get intimate with other women. Racked with guilt, what can you do to come to terms with this secret lesbian love life before it wrecks your marriage? How do you break out of the dead-end job rut? You're not looking for your dream job, and you're not looking to get rich. You just want to be content with your career and find financial stability, but it seems easier said than done. Your father is a retired child psychologist who should know that treating you like a nuisance when you need good advice about raising your own child isn't doing your relationship any favors. You've been doing the work of someone two levels above you in the company hierarchy, but you keep getting the brush off when you try to negotiate a raise and elevation in title. 420: Renee DiResta | Dismantling the Disinformation Machine

Renee DiResta (@noUpside) is the technical research manager at Stanford Internet Observatory. She studies the role that tech platforms and curatorial algorithms play in the proliferation of disinformation and conspiracy theories, terrorist activities, and state-sponsored information warfare. What We Discuss with Renee DiResta: How the anti-vaxx movement, the Tea Party, and militia groups learned early on to market and cross-pollinate their messages across social media to receptive segments of the populace with shocking success. The challenges faced by the US government in trying to stem the tide of social media exploitation by fringe groups and terrorists for the purposes of recruitment, generating sympathy for their causes, and fueling general chaos. How entire networks of disinformation evolve to support and perpetuate interconnected webs of conspiracy theories, pseudoscientific bunk, fringe political views, and propaganda planted by hostile states and bad actors. Why foreign organizations like Russia's Internet Research Agency and China's 50 Cent Party have promoted tribalism in the United States to keep us fighting among ourselves, how it serves their interests at our expense, and why we're so receptive to their influence. Why memes and hashtags are so effective as short-form vehicles to promote simple ideas powerfully across wide demographics. And much more... 419: David Shimer | 100 Years of Covert Election Interference

David Shimer (@davidashimer) is a historian, foreign policy analyst, and author of Rigged: America, Russia, and One Hundred Years of Covert Electoral Interference. What We Discuss with David Shimer: Why the more polarized a democracy, the more vulnerable it is to foreign subversion. While we know that Russia interfered in the 2016 election and is working to interfere in the 2020 election, it's actually been attempting to subvert the integrity of our elections for the past century. Why every American, of every political persuasion, should be concerned about the interference of Russia -- or any other foreign power -- in our elections. What Russia really seeks to gain from undermining the democratic process not only in the United States, but around the world. Countermeasures the United States can use to defend itself against this kind of interference. And much more... 418: How to Deal with Unsolicited Underage Nudes | Feedback Friday

Even if you're a minor, the life-altering consequences of being caught with child pornography shared via sexting by a fellow minor can be dire. We'll tackle how to deal with unsolicited, underage nudes -- and much more -- here on Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in! Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/417 On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Even if you're a minor, the life-altering consequences of being caught with child pornography shared via sexting by a fellow minor can be dire. Here's how to deal with unsolicited, underage nudes. [Thanks to our attorney friend Corbin Payne for helping us with this one!] After efficiently streamlining and automating the duties of your new job -- for which you got a hefty raise -- you find you're really only working 20 to 30 minutes per day. How can you come to terms with working smarter rather than harder without feeling like you're taking unfair advantage of your company? Your brother has little in the way of dating experience, and is now in a relationship with a recently divorced mother of two, 11 years his senior, who can most politely be described as "mean and controlling." How might you help him see for himself that he deserves better from a partner? You have a coworker who neglects aspects of her job in a way that could erode the public's trust in your profession. You genuinely like this coworker and don't want to destroy her life, so how can you get her to change her ways before resorting to bringing it to the boss' attention? In spite of making decent enough money with the business you co-founded, you've never felt comfortable playing the role of entrepreneur. Where do you look for opportunities and paths when you feel stuck and have exhausted your creativity? Have any questions, comments, or stories you'd like to share with us? 417: Dan Ariely | The Hidden Logic That Shapes Our Motivations

Dan Ariely (@danariely) is the James B. Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University and bestselling author of Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions and Payoff: The Hidden Logic That Shapes Our Motivations. What We Discuss with Dan Ariely: How does the What the Hell effect keep us making bad decisions even when we know they’re bad? Are we ever truly rational, unbiased, or impartial? What’s the best time to appear before a judge? How transparency in our lives can often backfire. How motivation works (and doesn’t work) and how we can use our own psychology against ourselves. 416: John Perkins | New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

John Perkins (@jperkinsauthor) is an economist who has advised the World Bank, United Nations, Fortune 500 corporations, and the US government. He is the author of The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. What We Discuss with John Perkins: How corporations and governments use economic hit men (like John in a previous life) to coerce developing countries to auction off their most valuable resources like rainforests, oil, and mines at bargain-basement prices. Why these predatory capitalist policies are commonplace and above scrutiny -- even though your tax dollars are massively subsidizing them. The dire consequences that transpire when the leaders of these developing nations refuse to play ball. How false economics, false promises, threats, bribes, extortion, debt, deception, coups, assassinations, and unbridled military power are used to dominate the developing world now more than ever before. What John has learned from his time inside this corrupt system that we can use to transform what he calls a Death Economy into a Life Economy. And much more... 415: Should I Dodge a Debt to the Mafia? | Feedback Friday

You suspect your father-in-law took a large loan from the mafia in the Eastern European country where you now reside, and that they may come to you for it because you're American and they assume you're rich (which you're not). What can you do to keep your family safe? We'll field this and more here on Feedback Friday! Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/415 On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: When you're stuck with a ceaseless sense of uncertainty (as many of us are in the midst of a pandemic), remember, in the words of the wise James Clear: action forces prioritization. You suspect your father-in-law took a large loan from the mafia in the Eastern European country where you now reside, and that they may come to you for it because you're American and they assume you're rich (which you're not). What can you do to keep your family safe? Texting “Did they pull the plug yet?” when your daughter was on life support a few months back was insensitive of your wife's friend. Should it be chalked up to an innocent lack of self-awareness, or is this a clear sign the friendship has run its course? You work in an industry that allows you a flexible schedule, teaches you new skills, and pays well. But you can't shake the desire to dabble in a craft industry that might be personally fulfilling -- only without your current perks. How can you ensure you've considered all the data before you make a decision you may regret? Can your reconnection with an old flame who already has kids endure if your plans to have a baby together are thrown off by lengthy unemployment and a loudly ticking -- and expiring -- biological clock? You're lucky enough to have work-funded coaching to help with personal and professional development, sleep, nutrition, navigating uncertainty, and communication for the next six months. What can you do to ensure you're making the most of this valuable -- but limited -- time?
