Backyard axe-throwing lead to the launch of Lumber Punks | #487

I love how people make a living. Past guest Shane Yeend makes money selling the usage-rights to the Hollywood sign. Adam Lippin sells cuddles. Laura Klien has a million dollar business selling battery-powered snot suckers! And today’s guest makes a quid from showing people how to throw axes … indoors!   It’s time to sharpen your axe and get stuck in to episode 487 of The (award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing Show thanks to American Express.   A little bit more about Lumber Punks Tyson McMillan … Tyson McMillan used to be a stand-up comedian, until one day in 2015 he was throwing axes in his backyard with his mate Sam. It was at that point that he looked Sam lovingly in the eyes and said “Hey Sammy … we should do this for a living!” They did and Lumber Punks - an indoor axe-throwing business - was born. Now Lumber Punks has three venues across Australia and the boys are having the time of their life. So what can you learn from a bloke who loves throwing axes? Great question. We talk about: How to get a crazy idea to market How to establish meaningful partnerships  with local businesses How one lucky PR opportunity launched the entire business The 3-pillars of the Lumber Punks business that lead to its success The importance of social currency Plus plenty more Now, with Tyson being an ex stand-up comedian, I felt compelled to kick things off with a joke ...   “You need to have a healthy taste for risk when it comes to throwing axes!” - Tyson McMillan, Lumber Punks   Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Lumber Punks Tyson McMillan: I love the fact that Tyson is focussing on what they’re good at - as he so eloquently put it “We’re good at throwing axes … not coffee!” I love Tyson’s view on how music can positively impact a business - how it can help tailor an experience to the individual. I love Tyson’s focus on building social currency amongst his tribe of loyal axe-throwers - to the point that he even makes sure there’s Lumber Punks branding behind the photos people take and share on their social media channels.   “When it comes to investing in and growing any part of your business, put in as much as you’re willing to lose.”   - Tyson McMillan, Lumber Punks   Other resources mentioned in episode 487 of The Small Business Big Marketing Show: Lumber Punks on Instagram Lumber Punks on Facebook Lumber Punks on YouTube Last week’s interview with customer experience expert Jonathan Barouch Interviews I’ve done with other business owners who sell interesting things: Snotty Noses’ Laura Klien Adam Lippin calls himself the Cuddlist Aussie Shane Yeend sells the rights to the world-famous Hollywood sign   This week’s Monster Prize Draw winner: Lynda Fairweather of The Happy Paws Club - a pet-sitting business based in NSW.   Please support the following businesses who make this show possible: American Express Business Explorer Credit Card Let your business expenses reward you. Simple (and effective) ideas to improve your customer experience with Local Measure’s Jonathan Barouch | #486

Finally! Finally, thanks to Local measure's Jonathan Barouch, we’re all going to discover how to create an incredible customer experience that will make it easier to do business with us, infinitely more enjoyable and crazily shareable. It’s a highly experiential episode 486 of The (award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing Show thanks to American Express.   A little bit more about Local Measure’s Jonathan Barouch … Marketing is full of jargon, right? And probably the most bandied around term of recent years has been customer experience, or CX as those in the know like to call it. But what is it? Why’s it important? How can it help grow my business? And if it can, how do I get some of that action? All excellent questions, which are about to be answered by customer experience expert Jonathan Barouch, who is the founder of real-time customer intelligence company Local Measure .... and is also one of Australia’s most respected tech entrepreneurs. Local Measure is next generation customer experience (mainly in the hospitality, travel & tourism sectors), providing highly-targeted, real-time customer intelligence, insight and demographic info to businesses about their customers. So if the idea of wowing those precious customers of yours appeals, then grab a pen and paper (I know, how old school!) and get ready to be wowed yourself. I started off by asking Jonathan to share the best customer experience he’d ever had.   “It’s so much easier for a small business to deliver an incredible customer experience than it is for a big one.”   - Jonathan Barouch, Local Measure   Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Local Measure’s Jonathan Barouch: I love the idea of giving deep consideration to the end-to-end journey of the customer as they travel through your business, the whole time asking yourself “How do I want my customer to feel?” I love that Jonathan acknowledges that B2B and B2C are just a distraction from the real way of doing business which is H2H (human-to-human) or P2P as I like to call it … people-to-people.  Be mindful of the fact that every customer now has a megaphone and more and more are willing to use it, thanks to social media, Google Reviews, and other review sites. So actively seek good reviews and testimonials, and be sure to respond to the good and bad ones.   “We need to start looking at our customers more holistically … from every angle …. And all the way along the purchase cycle.”   - Jonathan Barouch, Local Measure   Resources mentioned in episode 486 of The Small Business Big Marketing Show: Local Measure’s official website Great customer experience case studies on the Local Measure website Last week’s interview with rockstar Lachy Doley on how to make it big in the cut-throat music industry Interviews I’ve done about customer experience: Jay Baer on how to deal with customer complaints Joshua Nichols on his 21-step customer manifesto Zappo’s Jenn Lim on delivering happiness   This week’s Monster Prize Draw winner Peter Braid of Braid & Co   Please support the following businesses who make this show possible:   American Express Business Explorer Credit Card Let your business expenses reward you. Jimmy Barnes's keyboard player Lachy Doley on how to make a living from the cut-throat music industry | 485

Accomplished musician and small business owner Lachy Doley is a world-leading expert on the Hammond Organ. He’s also Jimmy Barnes’s keyboard player and he played for Powderfinger back in the day. He’s no slouch! In this very honest and open interview he shares how he makes a living from one of the world's toughest industries.   A little bit more about Lachy Doley … Righto, so a few years ago, this fellow by the name of Lachy Doley sent me an email (out of the blue) saying he listened to my show when touring, and that he loved it so much that he’d gone ahead and wrote, sang and recorded a new intro and music bed for me. I took a listen, loved it, and have been using it ever since.  I then rang to thank him and offer to get him some work. He politely replied that he was busy enough as he was Jimmy Barnes’s keyboard player. For oversea’s listeners, I’ll explain who Jimmy Barnes is during the interview, suffice to say he’s no slouch … and neither is Lachy. In fact, he's one of the world’s leading Hammond Organ aficionados.   “My ultimate goal is to win people over so that they'll have enough of a connection to you the person or artists that they’ll want to buy your music, merch, tickets to gigs … as soon as you put out anything they just want to get it. That’s what I’m always aiming for.”   - Lachy Doley   So why am I interviewing a well-established musician on this show? And why are they even listening to a show like this? Because Lachy is a small business owner just like you ... and whilst he’s played with some of Australia's biggest bands including Barnsey and Powderfinger … he also has his own band and he constantly has to hustle for live gigs, to sell more CDs, merch … put simply, he too has to make a living.   Now this is a very honest chat in which we cover: How he built his profile How he manages to bring his A-game to every gig Why he sent a heart-felt email to his listeners and what impact it had Plus he talks about the multitude of revenue streams he’s created in order to make a living    As a wannabe rockstar myself, I started off by asking Lachy to indulge me by explaining what it’s like to walk out on stage to tens of thousands of screaming fans …   Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Lachy Doley: I loved Lachy’s honesty and transparency. When was the last time you let your guard down in front of a customer, employee or supplier? Would you even dare? I love the fact that Lachy has multiple revenue streams including an e-Course, (print on-demand merch). I’ve linked to both in the show notes. And I love the fact that he’s segmenting his email list when people sign up.   What was your main take-away from this chat?   “I was so inspired by Powderfinger and their work ethic … they were a huge democracy. They were always doing meetings, they were just on to it all the time.” - Lachy Doley   Here’s that email Lachy sent back in 2017 THE TRUTH ABOUT MY CAREER, FAMILY AND THE RELEASE OF MY NEW ALBUM #LOVELIGHT I'm not gonna lie. I'm still doing it tough at the moment with all the shit that went down last year regarding the cancelled 6 week Europe tour with Glenn. So more than just letting you guys know that the preorders are open for the new album, I wanted to ask you all a few questions and tell you bit about what’s going on here. Firstly I gotta thank all you guys once again for being such a great support to me, my music and ultimately my family. I started recording and performing as the Lachy Doley Group in 2010 and apart from Jimmy Barnes I haven’t really done any work as a session player with anyone else since. Playing with Jimmy Barnes has pretty much gotten me through these years. The Lachy Doley Group has only cost me money. like lots of money! And that’s not even mentioning the time I spend working on it. I mean I’ve been working my fucking ass off, every spare second I’ve had for the last 6 years to get it to where it’s at and it’s talking it’s toll on my family, myself and my mental health. I mean I: Write the music (time) Perform the music (time) Record the music (time and heaps of money) Mix the music (time) Master the music (time) Then I market the album (stupid amounts of time and money) I also pay a publicist to market the album (I can't say exactly the amount, but it’s thousands) I send the albums off to radio, blogs and magazines around the world (stupid amounts of time and money, especially overseas radio stations, everyone wants a physical copy and postage is nuts) This album makes 4 Studios albums and 2 Live albums plus a DVD since 2010 (WTF?) I book all the shows , except overseas (so much time) I promote the shows (stupid amounts of time and money) I video a lot of the shows (so much money and setup) I edit the videos of the shows (so much time) I promote them on Facebook (So much time and money) I built and update my website (Lots of time, some money for hosting) I design all the artwork and posters (time) I tour manager everything. Which I’m absolutely hopeless at. (time) Public Liability Insurance (money) My Europe tour of 2015 ended up costing me $6000 dollars. Having said that. My Europe 2016 tour broke even. So that was good :-) I ENGAGE WITH ALMOST EVERYONE WHO CONTACTS ME on fb, email, twitter and alike. But now I’ve got over 28,000 Facebook likes, this adds up to ten’s of hours a week just replying to people but unfortunately doesn’t do anything for my hopeless financial situation. I give out so much advice to musicians via comments and private messages it’s bordering on crazy. But I have to say I really do love this part of everything. It’s just so many hours. On top of this I haul around a stupidly OVERSIZED HAMMOND ORGAN and WHAMMY CLAV all the around the world and then put in every single bit of energy and conviction into every performance, I feel like I’m gonna faint sometimes. Not to mention the cost of maintenance and petrol on my van when it’s running over 15,0000 kms a year SO…. when you find yourself home after driving 12 hours straight from an incredible week away playing 5 awesome shows to standing ovations at Woodford Folk Festival but you simply can’t pay your mortgage and feed the family that week. It’s time to really think hard about WHETHER THIS IS ALL WORTH IT. Sadly, There’s no work with Jim at the moment as he’s doing his book tour and the small amount he has coming up is directly when I’ve booked my new Album tour. BAD TIMING Don’t get me wrong I know I’ve achieved so much and I know I’m a great product. Infant everyday someone comments to me about how well I’m doing or how I’m just killing it at the moment. This makes me feel good for second but because I know that it’s totally not the case it really brings me down further. I’m still flat broke, actually broker than ever. I’m seriously this close to just giving up and finding a real job. But I’ve got to see this new album and it’s tour through.  So i wanted to ask a few things: If you do enjoy my music, watch my videos, learn from my videos or get something good from what I do, would you consider helping me to keep them coming by becoming a member of my VIP membership group. It’s a bit like CROWDFUNDING by a more spread out and sustainable version. All the info is here at www.lachydoley.com/vip please watch the video and see if it’s something you’d like to be apart of :-) Otherwise if you’re planning to buy a copy or preorder of the new album at some point. Would you mind doing it now as I’ll get the funds almost immediately AND it’ll help my chances of charting on the week it’s released. You can do that here www.lachydoley.com/bandcamp If you’re in Australia, Please come to one or more of my shows and book early so the venues don’t freak about whether anyones coming. All the shows are listed here www.lachydoley.com/shows SHARE AND TAG THE HELL out of my videos and posts :-) Sorry for the depressing tone of this email but it’s just where I am right now. Thanks so much everyone and happy new year. How publishing a book can scale your business, with business book publisher Lyda Mclallen | #484

Got a book in ya? I reckon every business owner has. And so does my guest, who’s an expert at helping peeps like you ... get published. It’s a very studious episode 484 of The (award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing Show thanks to American Express and digital marketing agency Yellow.   A little bit more about Lyda Maclallen of Talk Plus Tell … Lyda Mclallen is the founder of Talk Plus Tell and is an expert on helping business owners get published. While working at corporate for 8+ years, Lyda not-so-secretly helped authors promote their books as a side hustle. But it wasn’t until 2017 that she decided to do it full time. So far the authors Lyda and her team have worked with have gone on to sell hundreds of thousands of books, win awards, become international bestsellers, go on cross-country book tours, appear on the BBC, in Vogue, the Huffington Post and New York Times … and even go viral. Through her self-publishing company, Talk Plus Tell she now helps business owners produce beautiful books that sell and reflect the author’s goals and brand.   “Readers will love your book. But getting in front of them and selling thousands of copies can feel like an epic mountain to climb.” - Lyda Maclallen, Talk Plus Tell   We cover plenty of ground during this chat including: The types of books a business owner could write The essential questions you need to ask before writing a book What if you’re not a great writer Who you need on your team What are the best publishing options   Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Talk Plus Tell’s Lyda Mclallen: I fully support Lyda’s belief that every business owner should write a book. Get crystal clear on your ideal target reader by outlining what they’re wanting to achieve by reading your book, and understanding any pains or blockages that are in their way. Be honest about what you know and what you don’t know. And fill in the gaps of what you don’t know by interviewing others. That’s what I do!!   Resources mentioned in episode 484 of The Small Business Big Marketing Show: Talk Plus Tell’s official website Last week’s interview with One 80 Light inventor Ammon Arrave Interviews I’ve done with other business authors: Andrew Griffiths on writing a book Stu Keinecke of Get The Meeting! Ex-toilet cleaner turned product developer Ammon Arrave on how he came to invent the One 80 Light | #483

Ammon Arrave was once a teacher. Then he had a business cleaning portable toilets. Now he’s the inventor of the One 80 Light … the world’s first peripheral L.E.D. headlamp.   A little bit more about One 80 Light inventor Ammon Arrave … Righto, let’s meet Ammon Arrave.  He’s the inventor of the One 80 Light - the world’s first peripheral L.E.D. headlamp … which is a fancy way of saying it’s a light that you strap on your head and it illuminates everything in front of you. He’s done OK with it. He’s raised $150,000 on Kickstarter. And sold plenty of lights and accessories. But here’s the thing. He’s not a millionaire. Yet. He’s not an eCommerce rockstar. Yet. In fact, he’s not totally convinced he’s got what it takes to be either of those things. Yet. And that’s what I like about him. Ammon is just a bloke, who used to be a teacher then started a portable toilet cleaning business. He then tried his hand at product development … and here he is today. So maybe this time, have a listen to what Ammon has to share - after all he’s no dummy - he’s invented a pretty cool product, which he’s wholesaling, selling online and making a living from it. But at the end of this chat, I list a few more things he could be doing to grow his business and I’m going to give you a chance to share your thoughts with him as well. I started off by asking Ammon how portable toilets lead to the invention of the One 80 Light.   Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with One 80 Light inventor Ammon Arrave: I like the way Ammon makes a point of steering clear of the nay-sayers. Hang around with uplifting peeps. I like how Ammon is aware that there are a number of different groups of people using the One 80 Light - joggers, hikers, trades etc even though he’s not doing anything about individually targeting them in his marketing. I like the fact that he’s retained 100% ownership of his business, whilst using Kickstarter to raise the money he needs to move it forward.   Resources mentioned in episode 483 of The Small Business Big Marketing Show: Buy a One 80 Light on their official website Ammon’s new Kickstarter campaign Stu Heinecke’s podcast - How to get a meeting with anyone Last week’s interview with Get The Meeting! author Stu Heinecke Interviews I’ve done with other inventors or founders who’ve raised money through crowdfunding: Tom Dickson of Will It Blend Cedar Anderson from Flow Hive Phillip Kouch of Goldelucks   This week’s Monster Prize Draw winner Ben Amos of Engage Video Marketing on the Sunshine Coast   Please support the following businesses who make this show possible:   American Express Business Explorer Credit Card Let your business expenses reward you. Ever wondered how to get a meeting with anyone? Afterall, one meeting has the ability to change everything for the better. In your business. Even your life. Your challenge is to get past the Dobermans and get that meeting. And you’re about to learn how from Stu Heinecke, the father of contact marketing and author of the seminal book on this topic Get the Meeting!   A little bit more about Get the Meeting! Author Stu Heinecke … Stu Heinecke is a cartoonist for the Wall Street Journal - and a bloody good one at that! But he’s also a very clever marketing guy. In fact, Russ Klein, the CEO of The American Marke ting Association, has labelled Stu the father of contact marketing.  And that’s what we’re talking about today. You see, Stu is the author of two books (the most recent titled Get The Meeting!) which are laser-focused on ensuring you get past the gate-keepers and get that meeting! You know, that meeting that has the potential to change everything in your business and/or personal life?   So I’d suggest you get a pen and paper out for this one as Stu shares: How to get a 100% response rate using personalised campaigns His step-by-step approach to creating contact marketing campaigns (he’s created ones that have ROI in the millions of percent!) Plus plenty more …   “It’s now time to make a 100 percent response rate your baseline!” - Stu Heinecke, Get the Meeting!   Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Get the Meeting! author Stu Heinecke: Get creative with personalisation. Raise your expectations around your response rate. (Another mindset shift -> Be grateful for EAs). Create content and invite influencers on as  guests.   “Persistence needs to be a priority. It needs to show up in your calendar.” - Stu Heinecke, Get the Meeting!   Resources mentioned in episode 482 of The Small Business Big Marketing Show: Stu Heinecke’s official website Buy Get the Meeting! The rights to the Hollywood sign are owned by an Australian | #481

Recently in a cafe, I overheard someone say that an Australian bloke had secured the full licensing rights to the world-famous Hollywood sign. My first reaction? “How? Why?” My second reaction? “I have to interview him!” It’s a very Hollywood episode 481 of The (award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing Show thanks to American Express and digital marketing agency Yellow.   “I love taking a 360 degree view of a business and its needs in order to come up with the very best licensing opportunities.” - Shane Yeend, Imagination   A little bit more about Hollywood sign license owner Shane Yeend … Shane Yeend specialises in licensing ideas in order to make a whole lot of dough. His company, Imagination Games, owns the licensing rights to the Battle of the Sexes, Deal or No Deal, 50 Shades of Grey amongst other well-known entities. But where it gets really interesting is the fact that this Adelaide-born serial entrepreneur has secured the licensing rights to the world-famous Hollywood sign. Like, how does that even happen?! Who’d he buy it off? Why’d they sell it? What did he pay for it? How’s he make money from it? So many questions!!! Fortunately, Shane agreed to join me from his Adelaide home just prior to heading back to his LA headquarters where he answered them all … and then some … including how he managed to find his way to the Playboy Mansion and Michael Jackson’s Neverland! Now, as you’re about to find out, Shane is quite the story-teller … He starts the interview recounting how he came to owning the licensing rights to possibly the most famous sign in the world.   “I love taking a 360 degree view of a business and its needs in order to come up with the very best licensing opportunities.” - Shane Yeend, Imagination   Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Hollywood sign licensor Shane Yeend: I love the way Shane comes up with ideas by taking a full 360-degree view of the business. I totally agree with his view that as business owners we need to fully and deeply understand our customers and what they need. I love Shane’s idea of creating a playbook that contains the best person for every job you need done in your business.   Shane Yeend Interview Transcription   Tim  Shane Yeend. Welcome to the small business big marketing show.    Shane  How are you?   Tim  But I'm really good and I'm excited to speak to you. Because everyone that I have told that I'm speaking to this bloke from Adelaide who has bought the rights to the Hollywood sign gives me the same reaction. KeepCup creator Abigail Forsyth on building a business around reusing (not recycling)| #480

Abigail Forsyth is the inventor of KeepCup, the world’s first Barista standard, reusable coffee cup … and she’s on a mission to stop us from disposing of one million coffee cups every minute … of every day! It’s a very reusable episode 480 of The (award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing Show thanks to American Express and digital marketing agency Yellow.   A little bit more about KeepCup creator Abigail Forsyth … When Abigail Forsyth and her brother Jamie started a cafe business in Melbourne in 1998, disposable coffee cups were starting to become an environmental problem.   Now, as you’re about to hear, they’re a major problem.   And that’s where KeepCups step in. KeepCups are those reusable coffee cups you see people bring in to your local cafe. So instead of using a paper coffee cup that’s lined with plastic and thrown away the minute you’ve got your caffeine fix, KeepCups get used over and over.   They come in all shapes and sizes, colours and can even be personalised with your company branding.   Abigail joined me from her Fitzroy headquarters where we talked about: Why she chose to close the cafes and pursue the KeepCup idea How she used leading baristas as influencers before social influencers was even a thing How she handles the proliferation of copycats flooding the market How she’s created an environmentally responsible supply chain And plenty more   “Our vision at KeepCup is a disposable free world." - Abigail Forsyth, KeepCup   Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with KeepCup creator Abigail Forsyth It’s probably time for us all to take a look at all aspects of our businesses and make changes that will benefit the environment - ideas could include getting all staff a branded KeepCup, going paperless, carpooling to meetings. I love the personalisation option KeepCup offers. Personalisation of particular products is becoming more and more common as technology makes it easier and easier. Remember that interview with Lana Hopkins from Mon Purse? I loved how Abigail used baristas to get the word out. If you’d like to learn more about social influencers then take a listen to the interview I did with Jules Lund who’s started an influencer agency called Tribe.   “In today's conversation about single-use plastics and going plastic-free, too often plastics are all tarred with the same brush. It's not plastic that's the problem, it's how we use it.” - Abigail Forsyth, KeepCup     Abigail Forsyth Interview Transcription Tim  Abigail welcome to the small business big marketing show.    Abigail  Thank you very much.    Tim  It is awesome to have you here. And I'm really looking forward to this conversation. To kick things off. Can you quantify the problem that KeepCup is helping solve? Podcasting tips for 2020 and beyond with RadioHub founder Cooper Silk | #479

RadioHub founder and fellow podcaster Cooper Silk recently attended Podcast Movement, the world's biggest podcasting conference … and he’s here to share what best-practice podcasting looks like in 2020 and beyond.   A little bit more about fellow podcaster and RadioHub founder Cooper Silk … I first met this week’s guest over a couple of beers when I was hosting the Australian Podcast Awards last year. And we’ve hit it off ever since. Cooper Silk is the founder and owner of RadioHub … a high-end, professional podcasting studio set-up in Sydney. He’s also the host of Roosters Radio, which for all you Rugby League fans, is a weekly podcast he puts together for his favourite team. What’s even more interesting is he’s just back from Podcast Movement in Orlando Florida … the world’s biggest podcast conference. I joined Cooper at RadioHub’s Sydney studio where we talked about: His top learnings in regards to pre and post production of a podcast New tips, tricks & techniques to help you make a world-class podcast Why we’re lagging behind in podcast production in Australia How the big guys are producing and marketing their shows Why we need to up our approach to podcasting Plus plenty more podcasting insights.   “The big media companies are all in - as an independent producer you are competing against big teams of people with big budgets and star pulling power. You need to lift your game!” - Cooper Silk, RadioHub   Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with RadioHub’s Cooper Silk: Us independent podcasters must avoid becoming complacent now that all the big media companies are playing in this podcasting space. There’s plenty more we could be doing post-production to get each episode out there. If you’re a business owner thinking of starting a podcast but concerned that it’s too late, that there’s already enough out there, then get over it! Your challenge is simply a creative one in ensuring yours is the best!   “Leverage your audience to grow your show. Engage with your fans, respond to all their messages. Build one-on-one interactions, and constantly seek feedback.” - Cooper Silk, RadioHub   Cooper Silk Interview Transcription   Tim Cooper Silk. Finally buddy. This record-breaking crowdfunding campaign changed Flow Hive’s Cedar Anderson life forever | #478

Cedar Anderson would rather be walking naked through the Byron Bay hills than running the multi-million dollar empire he created with his old man. Fortunately he loves the fact that they’ve changed the beekeeping industry for good, thanks to one of the world’s most successful crowd-funding campaigns ever. It’s a buzzingly good episode 478 of The (award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing Show.   A little bit more about crowdfunding expert and Flow Hive creator Cedar Anderson… Cedar Anderson grew up in an intentional AKA hippy community in the Byron Bay hills, where he spent his time coming up with crazy inventions. Then in his early adult years, he worked as a paragliding instructor capturing aerial footage for Greenpeace. He’s also a third-generation beekeeper and it was during a particularly nasty honey harvest that he decided there had to be a better way. So for the next 10 years, he and his Dad set about inventing a better beehive. They did and it’s called Flow Hive. Now I don’t know much about beekeeping, but this thing is amazing. It’s a box that looks like a doll house which you can put anywhere, it has windows to see your bees at work, and when you want some honey, you literally turn on a tap and out it comes! And thanks to a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo that raised $15 million (they only wanted $70,000!),  Cedar is now heads an Australian manufacturing success story, having already shipped over 65,000 orders all over the world.  I was lucky enough to spend a few hours with Cedar at his Byron Bay HQ - we actually did this interview in his beekeeping suit wardrobe - where he shared: How growing up in an intentional community influenced him to become an inventor Where the idea for Flow Hive came from and why it took 10-years How he managed to create one of the world’s biggest crowd-funding campaigns that crashed the Indiegogo site multiple times! And how he reconciles being a hippy with now being a multi-millionaire I started off by asking Cedar a very probing question ... “How does he likes to eat his honey?”   “It’s amazing to work with someone whose brain is wired in the same way. Like … he can make just one hand movement and I already know what he’s talking about.” -Cedar Anderson, Flow Hive   Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Flow Hive’s Cedar Anderson: It was a great reminder that the very best marketing you can do is to create a great product or service. I love Cedar’s generosity of spirit. He invited me in to his world, introduced me to all his team who I ended up having lunch with, set-up a recording studio in his beekeeping suit wardrobe and even made time for a Facebook Live video. I love how he works to the beat of his own drum.   Cedar Anderson Interview Transcription TimCedar. Welcome to the small business big marketing show. CedarThank you for having me.
