Marci Shimoff on How To Be Happy For No Reason

She is dedicated to helping people live more empowered and joy-filled lives. This is truly one of my favorite interviews I've ever done. I've been a fan of Marci Shimoff for over a decade. Like millions of people did, I discovered her through her appearance in the 500-million+ copy selling documentary, The Secret. I loved Marci's story and energy, and certainly admired her inner happiness. Learning how to be happy for no reason is probably one of the most important lessons of our time, especially with so much uncertainty and unrest. Marci was very clear that this is not about being pollyanna or engaging in spiritual bypass. Being happy for no reason means finding and experiencing an inner state of peace and wellbeing that doesn't depend on circumstances. Who wouldn't want that?? I know I do. Research has shown that we all have a happiness set point. The breakdown of our happiness potentiality is based on: 50% genetics, 10% circumstances and 40% habits, thoughts and behaviors. You can't change your genetics or circumstances, but you absolutely can change your habits. Marci did extensive research to find that there are 21 main Happiness habits. She breaks them down into seven foundational categories and describes each for you to further investigate and look at within yourself. The seven main Happiness habits to build your inner home for happiness are: Foundation: taking responsibility for your life. This is about being the victor, not the victim and getting out of blame, shame and complaining. Pillar one: your mind (this is all about your thoughts and was my biggest area for growth) Pillar two: your heart (being open-hearted, full of gratitude, forgiving, loving, kind) Pillar three: your body (biochemistry of happiness; oxytocin, dopamine, etc) Pillar four: your soul (connected to greater energy of the Universe and feeling plugged in) Roof: purpose and passion, feeling inspired Garden: who you are you surrounded by and making sure to weed out toxic people (the weeds in your garden) and connect with supportive people (the roses in your garden) Marci explained that you want to look at where you are the weakest and start there. She asked me which was my most challenging area and without a doubt I shared that it was my mind and many thoughts that are often not as kind or helpful, and frankly happiness-depleting. Marci shared some fantastic tools (all below) on how to change your thoughts and use your body to create greater happiness. Diving deeper into happiness and the mind: * We on average have over 60,000 thoughts per day, most of which are not kind. 80% in fact are negative because of something called the 'negative bias'. * Don't blame yourself for your negative thoughts (this will just perpetuate the negative feedback loop) * Tools to change your mind and wire for greater happiness are to be on the lookout for good experiences (make a game of this, especially with your kids), savor the good for at least 20 seconds and make sure you have a 3:1 ratio. For every negative thought, you need to find 3 positive ones. Happiness and the body: * Don't overlook sleep - it is a huge predictor of happiness! Serotonin feeds melatonin and vice versa. Sleep is crucial for happiness. * Get to sleep before midnight, in fact the most important time to sleep is between 10 - 12 midnight. This is your most restorative sleep time! * Try going to bed by 10 pm for three nights and notice your happiness quotient * Sunning: go outside and face the sun, close your eyes (important not to look directly at the sun) and allow the sun to shine on you and your pineal gland for 2 minutes * Sit and stare at nature for three minutes a day/ twice a day. Do not try all of these new behaviors at once, build as you go and notice how much happier you feel no matter what else is going on around you! The Biology of Belief with Dr. Bruce Lipton
Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D., cell biologist and lecturer, is an internationally recognized leader in bridging science and spirit. Bruce was on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin's School of Medicine and later performed groundbreaking stem cell research at Stanford University. He is the bestselling author of The Biology of Belief, The Honeymoon Effect, and co- author with Steve Bhaerman of Spontaneous Evolution. Bruce received the 2009 prestigious Goi Peace Award (Japan) in honor of his scientific contribution to world harmony. For more information visit www.brucelipton.com This is one of the most informative and transformative conversations I've had yet. You'll want to make a little extra time to listen to the full interview with Bruce. I tried to break down many of the concepts and ideas that he discussed. My intention is for you to realize that you have the knowledge and understanding of what's really going on during this pandemic, and that you have a lot more sovereignty, choice and wellbeing accessible to you than perhaps realized. The conversation started with Bruce sharing that the biggest problem we face today in our world is another mass extinction. In the past 5 world extinctions, all were created by natural events. The last one was 66 million years ago when a comet hit earth and upleveled the web of life, hence the extinction of the dinosaurs. This is the first time that a massive extinction is at the hands of human behavior harming and affecting the web of life. There are many examples of this and signs on the wall, including overfishing and polluting the water, which has left us with 90% less fish in the ocean. In 2048 there will be no fish. It is our human civilization that is responsible for this loss and it's a major wake up call. He talked about returning to the behavior of indiginous people --- being gardeners in the garden, not taking over the garden. We can change these behaviors and I will describe ways of doing so further in the show notes. Dr. Lipton explained that there are two choices to focus on: 1. Fear, which will compromise your health or 2.Asking yourself, what are we building to create something better? All energy is life. Are you going to waste your energy on fear or use it in a life giving way to see what you can do to sustain yourself and the future? There are also two mechanisms in play, especially when there's a biological imperative or drive to survive when our lives are threatened. You will go into one of two protection modes: the external (adrenals) which is the fight/flight state or the internal (immune system) which shuts down when under a lot of stress in order to save energy. Dr. Lipton helped to discover what is now called Epigenetics, which is the study of our control above genes. Epigenetics shows that less than 1% of all disease comes from genes. In other words, disease comes from stress. Today in the U.S., over 60% of the population has 1 chronic disease (which means almost all cases are stress related) and 40% have 2 or more chronic diseases. These numbers are astounding and when you realize how much you can do to alleviate stress and the correlation between stress and illness, it's difficult not to want to spring into action. It's also that much more crucial to take exceptional care of yourself, especially during a pandemic. This means not eating industrial farmed food, taking your supplements and vitamins, moving regularly, stop watching the news and TV that puts you into a stress response and connecting with others. Being in community is a powerful healing agent...we were not meant to be isolated, which is so much of the issue with this pandemic and being quarantined. I asked Dr. Lipton about vaccines, specifically about the COVID vaccine. Dr. Lipton explained that vaccines in the shot form confuses the immune system. They are non-biological and are considered a foreign object to our body. Oral vaccines are the only kind he recommends as other vaccines weaken your systems as they are laden with toxins which don't have to be disclosed to the public. In sum, pay more attention to your wellbeing, self-care and letting go of stress in your life, as stress is the main cause of all illness. Another crucial component to avoiding illness is the importance of being in harmony with your body and changing your consciousness. You might be wondering how the heck to change your consciousness. Dr. Lipton breaks it down and gives some excellent resources and ways to do this. The most important aspect is understanding that we operate with our conscious and subconscious mind. To change your consciousness, you have to rewrite your programming and understand that you are existing with two different minds: your conscious (prefrontal cortex) which is the creative, positive thinking aspect of ourselves and the subconscious, which is just like a computer database and is highly imaginative and responds to hypnosis (theta brain waves). What most people don't know is that 95% of your day is your subconscious on autopilot verses 5% is your conscious thinking mind, which has all the good wishes for you, but is a minimal part of your day. The programming of our subconscious mind happens from birth to age seven. You will literally receive your programming from observing those around you; your parents, care-takers, family, community, teachers, etc. Because most programming is disempowering, the real key to changing consciousness is changing your subconscious program. Ways to change your subconscious programming: Hypnosis - play a positive and affirming program at night and allow yourself to fall asleep listening so that it can penetrate your theta brain waves. Repetition - Keep saying affirmations of what you desire, such as "I am happy", "I am confident", "I am prosperous", until you eventually program your subconscious to believe it. Energy Psychology - Check out www.brucelipton.com for many ways to use these techniques. Ultimately, love is what stops your programming and it gets you out of thinking. In order to save the world, you have to start first with yourself, your consciousness and adding more heart energy in all you do. This is where you get out your pen and write whatever comes to mind, doodle or draw until you start to get more insight or flow to your thoughts. Gentle yoga and time in nature helped to lower her cortisol levels (which were dangerously high from her stressful job and lifestyle). Repeat the mantra 'this is temporary' as often as needed. This helped Ashley stay grounded! Be an overcomer, not an overachiever! Find what you loved to do as a child and start incorporating that in your day; for her it was dancing, singing, reading and writing. We also talked about the lessons of the pandemic and how this can be a time for real change and deep reflection on what's really important. This is a time to come home to yourself and connect more to spirit (or whatever you call that divine connection) and your true self. How to Access Your Psychic Powers with Laura Powers

She is the creator of The Desire Map series—the book has been translated into ten languages, a day planner system, and online courses that over 250,000 people have tapped into. There are 500+ Desire Map Facilitators running programs in 23 countries. Her podcast, With Love, Danielle, ranked in iTunes' Top 10 Wellness category. She's the author of White Hot Truth: Clarity for keeping it real on your spiritual path, and The Fire Starter Sessions: A guide to creating success on your own terms, which also spun off into a coaching curriculum. Danielle was a book publicist and publishing consultant, and the executive director of a future-studies think tank, studying trends for the likes of the Pentagon and the World Bank. Her charities of choice are VDay: a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls; and Tree Sisters setting out to "rapidly accelerate reforestation through Nature-based feminine leadership." Marianne Williamson refers to Danielle "as a bright light in the modern priestesshood." Eve Ensler calls her "a force field of energy, wonder, humour, and love." She now speaks at women's events about consciousness and heart-intelligence, and is a mother to a teenage son. This conversation with Danielle was nothing short of delicious and quite deep. I started out by asking her about her experience stepping into her higher self, her 'You-est You'. I loved her answer, "What else is there?'...short and sweet, yet so profound. We talked a lot about living in truth, connected to your soul self, your higher self or God self. We often doubt ourselves, yet Danielle reminded me that really at the heart of who you are, you know it. You know your truth. We also got into the need for each of us to be more inclusive, loving, aware and awake to the fact that most of our world is set up to distract us and keep you distanced from your true essence. I know I've struggled with taking time away from my phone, pausing to be present and not worrying if I'm missing a client's email or social media post to like or comment on. It's easy to get caught up in distraction and it's important to understand that this feeds into the addiction of not being present with yourself. The aim, as Danielle so beautifully said is to "love with fullness, to be aligned with spirit and allow for your higher wisdom to guide you. It's about living a heart-centered life." You have to want to be free, free from the distractions and negative beliefs, to become awake. "It's a big vow to be devoted to being awake and living in your heart." We also talked about the importance of doing shadow work, which really is the basement of your psyche. It needs to be cleaned up because this is what is controlling your decisions. The inner child work so many of us have worked on is really the unconscious part of ourselves. You want wholeness running the show and ultimately to be more harmonious. Ways to be harmonious and have wholeness: Devotion...become devoted to living in your heart through meditation and cleaning up your energy and mind. Only expand your perception from your heart. Learn to reparent yourself. You'll need to become the mother and father for yourself. Talk to yourself like a loving parent would, for example you might say to yourself: 'Let me look after you no matter what, 24/7. I am here with you always.' The darkness wants you to stay distracted, don't allow yourself to be too distracted to love yourself. Devotion is the answer. Empathy is the skill that will help you and our planet to wake up. We're here to heal and move into Unity consciousness. It starts with you. Growing Big Dreams & Manifesting Your Heart's Desires with Robert Moss

Robert calls it a 'dream drought', where we now need to tap into resources and sources beyond the obvious. Dreams are the language of the soul. This is where dreams come in, and not just the dreams you have at night. He explains the different kinds of dreams you can have, the magic of how they work in helping you to manifest your heart's desires and how to start now. Here are some wonderful tips to help you start to reopen your relationship with your dreams, of all kinds: Start with your night time dreams and begin to journal about them each morning. Journaling tells the Universe production team, so to speak, that you're ready to record and to listen. Try and remember your first and the last dream you had and write about it (this opens you up to being a vessel for connecting more to your dreams) Get in touch with your magical child self --- whatever it was that you enjoyed doing, start doing more of that NOW. Meditate and grow a vision in your mind of where you want to go directed from your heart center. Find an object that represents this image so you can better touch, taste and feel it. This level of consciousness is known as the 'privileged zone of consciousness'. Give yourself permission and time for day dreaming and to lay around horizontally before you sleep or right when you wake up to connect at a deeper level. This will help you to access the I-land (get it, instead of Island?!) of your heart's deepest desires. One of my favorite quotes (and chapter titles) from Robert is that 'You don't have to drive used Karma' and 'The stronger the imagination, the less imaginary the results'. Finding Radical Compassion with Tara Brach
Tara Brach is an internationally known meditation teacher, psychologist and author of bestselling Radical Acceptance and Radical Compassion. Her popular weekly podcast is downloaded 3 million times a month. Along with Jack Kornfield, Tara leads the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program (MMTCP) serving participants in over 50 countries. This was by far one of the most touching and moving interviews I've done. It is clear that Tara embodies incredible presence, loving kindness and the qualities of the divine. There were so many beautiful words of wisdom here that I hope touch, move and inspire you as much as they did for me. I believe that self-kindness and ending the war with ourselves is one of the most important steps to waking up and changing our collective story to one of collaboration and community. Read on for Tara's brilliant nuggets of wisdom: When you're in a challenging time, as we all are now, Tara shared that it's important to start with "This is hard." It's real and raw and affirms what's going on. When we get stressed, we turn against ourselves and get into a 'trance of unworthiness'. We start to believe "It feels bad, so I'm bad." Being at war with ourselves is the biggest issue. Real transformation happens when we decide to be kind to ourselves. Let your intention be to be kind to yourself, and start there. You might say "Please, may I be kind." A practice Tara uses in her own life, especially during the pandemic, is to bookend her day. She starts the day with "Please, may I be open hearted, open to love and kind." In the evening she'll scan the day to see what happened. No matter what, be kind to yourself and don't get into blame or judgment. Tenderness with ourselves helps to decondition this negative inner voice. Whatever you practice becomes your practice. Set the intention to be present and loving. What really matters right now is waking up together, holding hands. We need to wake up out of separateness because we belong together as one energy and one spirit. Meditation doesn't have to just be sitting down, it can be you taking a walk in nature, singing, yoga or lying on your back feeling into your body. Tara shared a great piece of fun advice, "put your tush on the cushion and no judgement."
