Dr. Hilde Van Meirhaeghe: On-farm Hatching Perspectives | Ep. 23

It is common knowledge that the US and European poultry industries are quite different. In the US poultry industry, eggs are often sent to large hatcheries. In Europe, we have seen on-farm hatching emerge. On-farm hatching is a revolutionary Dutch system developed to solve certain problems with transporting and hatching broiler chicks. In this episode, Dr. Hilde Van Meirhaeghe shares her experience as a vet consultant in a European setting and discusses the main differences between the poultry industries, delving into on-farm hatching and early feeding procedures.โ€œWhen it comes to on-farm hatching, the big advantage is that as soon as the chicks are born, they can eat and drink whenever theyโ€™re ready for it.โ€ - Dr. Hilde Van MeirhaegheWhat youโ€™ll learn:Highlight (00:00)Introduction (2:10)On-farm hatcheries (4:53)Handling the eggs (15:07)Early feeding, and gastrointestinal and immune development (17:56)The best first food for chicks (28:53)Vaccination (31:37)The last 20 years in the poultry industry (33:20)Final 3 questions (43:32)Meet the guest: Dr. Hilde Van MeirhaegheExperience:Current: Academic Advisor in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of GhentPast: Poultry Consultant and Veterinarian at VetworksBackground:D.V.M. Dr. Guillermo Tellez-Isaias: Pathogen Challenges in Poultry | Ep. 22

The overuse of antibiotics has led to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in poultry production. However, there are some additives, like probiotics and prebiotics, which can be used as alternatives to reduce the need for antibiotics. In that sense, how can we determine if feed additives are helpful for birds? Simply put, maintaining a healthy gut is crucial for the overall well-being of poultry, since it leads to better growth and immunity. That means that developing models to induce intestinal inflammation and thus test different nutraceuticals (probiotics, prebiotics, organic acids, enzymes, essential oils, and phytobiotics) with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can help us on that matter. In this episode, Dr. Tellez-Isais discusses his work regarding the search for solutions for pathogens by developing probiotics and other feed additives through models that evaluate intestinal inflammation and biomarkers that measure the effectiveness of nutraceuticals."We've developed different models, which allow us to induce intestinal inflammation, and biomarkers, so we can measure whether a nutraceutical is effective in any of these different models." - Dr. Guillermo Tellez-IsaiasWhat youโ€™ll learn:Highlight (00:00)Introduction (1:25)Biomarkers in salmonella challenge models (9:25)Insights on gut inflammation studies (18:07)Probiotic function in the maintenance of gut integrity (24:09)The future of antibiotic alternatives (33:58)Final questions (40:05)Meet the guest: Dr. Guillermo Tellez-IsaiasExperience:Current: Research Professor at the Center of Excellence in Poultry Science of the University of ArkansasPast: Professor and Head of the Avian Medicine Department, College of Veterinary Medicine, National Autonomous University of MexicoBackground:Ph.D., (Texas A&M University)M.Sc., Veterinary Sciences (National Autonomous University of Mexico)D.V.M. Dr. Edgar O. Oviedo-Rondon: Broiler and Breeder Strategies | Ep. 20

The purpose of broiler and breeder nutrition and management is to ensure that the birds receive adequate nutrition and care as to support optimal growth and production. It can include selecting appropriate feeds, formulating diets, implementing feeding and watering systems, and monitoring the health and welfare of the birds. In order to perform those processes, statistical and computational techniques are used in data analysis to extract insights and inform decision-making. Indeed, data analytics in broiler and breeder production can optimize nutrition and management practices, monitor performance, and identify patterns, and thatโ€™s what Dr. Oviedo-Rondon discusses in this episode. He talks about broiler and breeder production, how to enhance it (primarily through nutrition), and the advent of data analytics to support those improvements in the poultry industry."Nutrition and management ended up affecting many characteristics on the reproductive tract, which affects the hen's ability to produce fertile eggs." - Dr. Edgar Orlando Oviedo-RondonWhat youโ€™ll learn:Highlight (00:00)Introduction (1:40)Topics on the nutrition of breeders or pull management (4:06)Fertility issues and feathering (7:15)Everyday feeding of pullets (10:25)Grading (13:04)Key points on pullet rearing (14:20)Research on broilers and data analytics (18:04)The future of data analytics in the poultry industry (24:40)New research on poultry nutrition and health (27:34)Final questions (36:06)Meet the guest: Dr. Edgar Orlando Oviedo-RondonExperience:Current: Professor in the Prestage Poultry Science Department, North Carolina State UniversityBackground:Ph.D., Poultry Science - Nutrition (University of Arkansas)M.Sc., Animal Nutrition and Production (Universidade Estadual de Maringรก)Connect with the guest on Social Media: LinkedIn๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—”๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜๐˜€, ๐—ฆ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ณ๐˜† ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜† ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ท๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ.The Poultry Podcast Show is trusted and supported by innovative companies like:- JBI- Protekta- DSM- Adisseo- AB Vista

Dr. Casey Owens: Ensuring Chicken Meat Quality | Ep. 19

The quality of chicken meat is an important factor for the poultry industry and its consumers. In that sense, defects are a common concern, and they include white striping, woody breast, and spaghetti meat โ€“ which can affect the texture and tenderness, key aspects, and decrease the value of the product. Such defects are caused by muscle abnormalities that may occur during the growth and development of chickens. There is a possible solution, however: breaded chicken, such as chicken nuggets, can be a tasty, convenient, and cost-effective alternative to those meat defects. Thatโ€™s the main topic of todayโ€™s episode, in which Dr. Casey Owens discusses the challenges and possible opportunities when it comes to chicken meat quality.โ€œI think meat quality has been gathering a lot more attention these daysโ€ -  Dr. Casey OwensWhat youโ€™ll learn:Highlight (00:00)Introduction (1:20)Tenderness (5:40)Deboning (8:10)Air chilling and water chilling (10:00)Marinating process (13:12)White striping, Spaghetti meat, and Woody Breast (17:18)Breading and Chicken nuggets (30:35)Chicken rib meat (35:31)Fresh chicken and turkey meat (37:39)3 final questions (41:44)Meet the guest: Dr. Casey OwensExperience:Current: Professor at the University of ArkansasBackground:Ph.D., Food Science and Technology (Texas A&M University)M.Sc., Food Science and Technology (Texas A&M University)B.S., Poultry Science (Texas A&M University)Connect with the guest on Social Media: LinkedIn๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—”๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜๐˜€, ๐—ฆ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ณ๐˜† ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜† ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ท๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ.The Poultry Podcast Show is trusted and supported by innovative companies like:- JBI- Protekta- DSM- Adisseo- AB Vista

Dr. Darrin Karcher: Challenges in Housing Hens | Ep. 14

Dealing with extensive housing systems for laying hens is no easy task, and changing the production system is just as hard. Lately, weโ€™ve been seeing some movement towards conversion from conventional systems to alternative cage-free systems for laying hens, which has been driven by attempts by the industry to answer new consumer demands and behavior changes. To achieve that goal, we must consider the differences involved in the production lines, and the nutrition, health, and behavior of birds, not to mention the cost of all of that. In this episode, Dr. Darrin Karcher discusses some of the main aspects involved in transitioning systems in the egg production of laying hens. He also talks about creating new education programs for the industry to strengthen poultry production.โ€œIndustry is doing a good job of trying to make the best decisions with the information they have right now to move forward with the transition to extensive housing systems for layers. Reaching out to backyard poultry producersCreating extension programs and the Shell Egg AcademyDifferences between conventional and cage-free systemsThe influence of light on behaviorAnimal welfare issues on the horizonMaintaining egg shell quality late in layDr. Darrin Karcher has received his B.S. from Ohio State University, his M.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his Ph.D. from Purdue University, where he currently occupies the role of Associate Professor and Extension Poultry Specialist in the Department of Animal Sciences.
