Dr. Jason Emmert: Future of Ag Education | Ep. 32

Teaching can be challenging, especially when it comes to ag-related courses. That is because aside from lecturing, professors must also engage students in hands-on learning experiences, such as laboratory and field work, in order to help them apply their knowledge in the real world. In that sense, communication between educators and their students is essential, as is providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment that encourages critical thinking and creativity. During this episode, Dr. Emmert discusses the challenges and opportunities present in this new generation and provides an outlook on funding, jobs, and technology related to teaching."You must get as much hands-on day-to-day experience as you can, because that's what really allows you to understand how an animal can be both similar and vastly different from humans." - Dr. Jason Emmert What you’ll learn:Highlight (00:00)Introduction (2:00)Background (3:03)Teaching (5:11)  The impact of an ag background on youth (9:01)Challenges of the new undergrad generation (13:37)Contemporary issues with agriculture consumers and environmental sciences (16:40)Teaching with live animals (22:27)Advice for those pursuing an ag undergrad (25:42)Funding outlook for students in ag (29:44)Job outlook in the ag (31:35)Technology in an Animal Sciences curriculum (33:45)Current research and collaborative work (42:39)Final thoughts (49:02)Three final questions (50:44)Meet the guest:  Dr. Jason Emmert Experience:Current: Professor at the University of IllinoisPast: Faculty member at the University of Arkansas; Assistant Dean in the University of Illinois College of ACES Office of Academic ProgramsBackground:Ph.D., Nutritional Science (University of Illinois)M.S., Nutritional Sciences (University of Illinois)B.S., Agricultural Science (University of Illinois)𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘀, 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺.The Poultry Podcast Show is trusted and supported by innovative companies like:- JBI- Protekta- DSM- Adisseo- AB Vista- Phibro- Eastman- Evonik- Natural Biologics- Berg + Schmidt

Dr. Kelley Wamsley: Maximizing Broiler Performance | Ep. 28

When it comes to poultry, the physical quality of feed is a critical factor for optimizing broiler performance, because feed particle and nutrient distribution can affect growth and efficiency. Thus, we can enhance the profitability of the flock by improving the physical quality of the feed, increasing nutrient intake, and reducing feed waste. However, to achieve those goals, we need to carefully take into consideration factors such as feed formulation, processing, and distribution. In this episode, Dr. Kelley Wamsley discusses ongoing research on the topic, aimed to maximize broiler performance based on those many aspects."In general, feed quality is pretty bad in the industry, right? There's a variety of factors playing heavily against having really high feed quality". – Dr. Kelley WamsleyWhat you’ll learn:Highlight (00:00)Introduction (1:58)Some advice for your past self (9:21) Teaching philosophy (11:48)How to encourage students to pursue Poultry Science (14:50)The core mission of research programs (22:00)The impact of feed distribution on feed quality and nutrient segregation (25:09)The impact of beak size on preferences for feed particle size in starting chicks (45:15)Final thoughts (55:06)3 Final questions (59:27)Meet the guest: Dr. Kelley WamsleyExperience:Current: Associate Professor of Poultry Nutrition at Mississippi State UniversityBackground:Ph.D., Poultry Nutrition and Feed Manufacture (West Virginia University)M.Sc. Dr. Revathi Shanmugasundaram: Mycotoxins in Poultry Diets | Ep. 27

Mycotoxins are often present in poultry diets and can pose a significant challenge. That is because co-occurrence of mycotoxins reduces the tolerance levels of individual mycotoxins; in other words, multiple mycotoxins in poultry feed, even at subclinical levels, can exacerbate mycotoxin pathology and lead to necrotic enteritis. In this episode, Dr. Revathi Shanmugasundaram discusses her research on how mycotoxins, particularly fumonisins and deoxynivalenol, interact with foodborne pathogens in poultry and affect the health of the animals.“We want to know what's the lowest concentration of mycotoxins that will not affect production performance and that will not cause bacterial infections or subclinical diseases.” - Dr. Revathi ShanmugasundaramWhat you’ll learn:Highlight (00:00)Introduction (1:40)Research on mycotoxins in poultry production (4:06)Masked mycotoxins (9:10)Health impacts of mycotoxins (12:29)Synergy of multiple mycotoxins and levels of mycotoxins (16:30)Measures for decreasing mycotoxin levels (22:04)Mycotoxin effects on GI microbiota (24:17)The future of research on mycotoxins in poultry (28:16)Final thoughts (34:10)Meet the guest: Dr. Revathi ShanmugasundaramExperience:Current: Research Biologist at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS)Past: Research Associate at Ohio State UniversityBackground:Ph.D., Animal Sciences (Ohio State University)M.V.M., Animal Genetics and Breeding (Tamilnadu Veterinary & Animal Sciences University)D.V.M. Dr. Marie-Pierre Montminy: Predicting Poultry Nutrient Needs | Ep. 25

Calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) play vital roles in various physiological processes in poultry, including bone and feather growth, muscle contractions, and energy metabolism. Bearing that in mind, it is important to consider that feed type and form, along with the presence of other dietary components, can alter the absorption of P and Ca from the GIT. Thus, predicting the requirements of birds for P and Ca requires considering several factors, including species, age, physiological stage, and feed type. In this episode, Dr. Marie-Pierre Létourneau Montminy shares her expertise in predicting the destination of P and Ca in the GIT and body of birds in order to determine the appropriate requirements.“We have to be precise about Ca and P requirements as well as about the value of feedstuff”. -  Dr. Marie-Pierre Létourneau MontminyWhat you’ll learn:Highlight (00:00)Introduction (1:47)Calcium (Ca) and Phosphorus (P) requirements for growing birds (4:25)Enzymes and the process of balancing different types of P (6:42)Nutrient requirements for modern birds (9:11)Growth curves in broilers (12:56)Ca and P requirement modeling for birds (16:23)Transit time, Ca and P absorption (26:48)Limestone solubility (28:52)Interesting and innovative aspects of Ca and P regulation (31:05)Poultry diet, Ca and P availability (36:38)Lameness and applied knowledge to laying hens (42:54)Final questions (46:59)Meet the guest: Dr. Marie-Pierre Létourneau MontminyExperience:Current: Associate Professor at Laval University Background:Ph.D., Animal Sciences (Cotutelle AgroParisTech)M.Sc., Animal Sciences (AgroParisTech)B.Sc., Agronomy (Laval University)Connect with the guest on Social Media: LinkedIn𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘀, 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺.The Poultry Podcast Show is trusted and supported by innovative companies like:- JBI- Protekta- DSM- Adisseo- AB Vista- Phibro- Eastman- Evonik- Natural Biologics- Berg + Schmidt

Dr. Ryan Arsenault: Immunometabolism Disease Pathogenesis | Ep. 24

The focus of research on diseases lies primarily on the immune response to infection and pathogenesis. That is because pathogens often affect the metabolism of their hosts by targeting their immune systems, both of which are extensively intertwined. So to better understand disease pathogenesis and potential interventions, we need to study diseases from the perspective of immunometabolism. During this episode, Dr. Ryan Arsenault discusses immunometabolism and disease pathogenesis, focusing on necrotic enteritis and Salmonella infections. Additionally, he highlights the importance of maintaining good performance and animal health."Always ask yourself: 'how is this useful, how am I doing it, how can this be applied, and how will it benefit the birds and the producers?" - Dr. Ryan ArsenaultWhat you’ll learn:Highlight (00:00)Introduction (1:50)Gut health and signal transduction for salmonella (4:21)Improving the good gut flora of poultry (6:08)Key nutrition aspects related to Necrotic enteritis and Salmonella diseases (9:45)Immunomodulatory response (12:28)Research and challenges in poultry health (15:12)Salmonella and food safety concerns (19:56)Things to watch out for when it comes to Necrotic enteritis (25:13)Final thoughts (27:42)Meet the guest: Dr. Ryan ArsenaultExperience:Current: Associate Professor at the University of DelawareBackground:Postdoctoral Fellow (USDA ARS)Ph.D., Biochemistry (University of Saskatchewan)B.Sc., Biochemistry (University of Saskatchewan)Connect with the guest on Social Media: Twitter𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘀, 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺.The Poultry Podcast Show is trusted and supported by innovative companies like:- JBI- Protekta- DSM- Adisseo- AB Vista- Phibro- Eastman

Dr. Hilde Van Meirhaeghe: On-farm Hatching Perspectives | Ep. 23

It is common knowledge that the US and European poultry industries are quite different. In the US poultry industry, eggs are often sent to large hatcheries. In Europe, we have seen on-farm hatching emerge. On-farm hatching is a revolutionary Dutch system developed to solve certain problems with transporting and hatching broiler chicks. In this episode, Dr. Hilde Van Meirhaeghe shares her experience as a vet consultant in a European setting and discusses the main differences between the poultry industries, delving into on-farm hatching and early feeding procedures.“When it comes to on-farm hatching, the big advantage is that as soon as the chicks are born, they can eat and drink whenever they’re ready for it.” - Dr. Hilde Van MeirhaegheWhat you’ll learn:Highlight (00:00)Introduction (2:10)On-farm hatcheries (4:53)Handling the eggs (15:07)Early feeding, and gastrointestinal and immune development (17:56)The best first food for chicks (28:53)Vaccination (31:37)The last 20 years in the poultry industry (33:20)Final 3 questions (43:32)Meet the guest: Dr. Hilde Van MeirhaegheExperience:Current: Academic Advisor in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of GhentPast: Poultry Consultant and Veterinarian at VetworksBackground:D.V.M. Dr. Guillermo Tellez-Isaias: Pathogen Challenges in Poultry | Ep. 22

The overuse of antibiotics has led to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in poultry production. However, there are some additives, like probiotics and prebiotics, which can be used as alternatives to reduce the need for antibiotics. In that sense, how can we determine if feed additives are helpful for birds? Simply put, maintaining a healthy gut is crucial for the overall well-being of poultry, since it leads to better growth and immunity. That means that developing models to induce intestinal inflammation and thus test different nutraceuticals (probiotics, prebiotics, organic acids, enzymes, essential oils, and phytobiotics) with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can help us on that matter. In this episode, Dr. Tellez-Isais discusses his work regarding the search for solutions for pathogens by developing probiotics and other feed additives through models that evaluate intestinal inflammation and biomarkers that measure the effectiveness of nutraceuticals."We've developed different models, which allow us to induce intestinal inflammation, and biomarkers, so we can measure whether a nutraceutical is effective in any of these different models." - Dr. Guillermo Tellez-IsaiasWhat you’ll learn:Highlight (00:00)Introduction (1:25)Biomarkers in salmonella challenge models (9:25)Insights on gut inflammation studies (18:07)Probiotic function in the maintenance of gut integrity (24:09)The future of antibiotic alternatives (33:58)Final questions (40:05)Meet the guest: Dr. Guillermo Tellez-IsaiasExperience:Current: Research Professor at the Center of Excellence in Poultry Science of the University of ArkansasPast: Professor and Head of the Avian Medicine Department, College of Veterinary Medicine, National Autonomous University of MexicoBackground:Ph.D., (Texas A&M University)M.Sc., Veterinary Sciences (National Autonomous University of Mexico)D.V.M.
