Relationships to Cultural Beliefs
Believe it or not, the brain and nervous system process social threat and physical threat the same way, making them equally as harmful to our health. That means that the cultural beliefs that shape our society are causing real trauma and dysregulating our nervous systems. Today, Jennifer and Elisabeth are talking to Christy Chung, a certified NSI practitioner, advocate and healer, on this episode centered around culture, community, and the nervous system. They discuss how social stressors (such as gender, sexual orientation, race, socioeconomic status, etc.) can cause unsafe relationships with people and society, and the NSI tools that have helped Christy in her racial equity work, as well as on a personal level as a queer, Asian woman. Christy also sheds light on the impact that long-term social threat, especially racism, has on the health of those affected. Plus, you’ll learn a few interesting facts you might not know — like how culture has shaped our anatomy and biased our brains! This episode is a must-listen for anyone who wants to find out how they can not only support their own nervous system and stay healthy, but change the harmful system of our society. Tune in now! Topics discussed in this episode: Christy’s businesses and activist work Unsafe relationships with people, society, and culture Dealing with conflict and repair work with NSI The relationship between social stress and attachment Minority stress theory and social safety theory The impact of chronic stress on the body from an NSI perspective Examples of how culture shapes brain function How Christy uses NSI tools in her work and personal life Making an impact and sacred responsibility Resources mentioned in this episode: Sonya Renee Taylor Gabor Maté “The neurobiology of social stress resulting from Racism: Implications for pain disparities among racialized minorities” by Joanna M. Hobson, Myles D. Moody, Robert E. Sorge, and Burel R. Perfectionism is a Trauma Response
Our society rewards those who work hard, appear to never make mistakes, and seem to have everything under control. We’ve collectively decided on what perfect looks like and attributed perfectionism with the ideal person. What if we told you that perfectionism is actually a protective measure used to prevent oneself from feelings of rejection, abandonment, and worthlessness? These words don’t quite scream “perfect” do they? Trauma Rewired hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth have touched upon this trauma response before, but today’s episode is a deep dive into how it can develop and lead to harmful avoidance behaviors. They deconstruct perfectionism, including defining the three types of perfectionism and how it interplays with CPTSD elements like the inner critic. You’ll learn the many health consequences that the chronic stress of perfectionism can cause, and how to distinguish excellence from perfectionism. Jennifer and Elisabeth also share their experience with perfectionism, and how it can push us into burnout or freeze states. Perfectionism is not an attainable goal, which makes it debilitating and a hindrance to healing trauma. To take the first step towards moving out of perfectionism, tune in! Topics discussed in this episode: Defining the 3 types of perfectionism Perfectionism as a trauma response Jennifer’s example of setting yourself up for failure The effects of perfectionism on our health Maladaptive coping mechanisms for perfectionism How to recognize perfectionist behaviors and thinking Jennifer on taking action against her perfectionism Trauma healing, neurosomatic intelligence, and integration Limiting beliefs push the loop of perfectionism Elisabeth on the importance on self-regulation tools in her life How perfectionism negatively affects organizations and employees Steps Elisabeth has taken to heal her perfectionism and workaholism Claim your two FREE weeks on Brain Based Wellness Our society rewards those who work hard, appear to never make mistakes, and seem to have everything under control. Dissociation
Disassociation is one way that our brain keeps us safe from things that may cause us stress or harm. Whether it’s a simple moment of daydreaming or constant state of dissociation in an abusive relationship, being cognitively and physically disconnected is not conducive to healing. During this episode of Trauma Rewired, Jennifer and Elisabeth discuss the spectrum of dissociation and how it can affect the interoceptive system, or how we process and send information to the brain. They go over the symptoms of dissociation, sharing their personal experiences of dissociation related to childhood trauma. Our survival brain sees healing as a threat, but there are ways to rehab the deficits in the nervous system to give more clear information to the brain, helping us to think and see more clearly. For example, training our interoceptive system can fight our hypersensitivity to threats and bring us out of disassociation. To learn what tools can help you retrain your nervous system and the learned conditioned responses that are no longer serving you, tune in to this episode! Topics discussed in this episode: ● Misconceptions about dissociation ● The definition of dissociation and its symptoms ● Dissociation as a protective mechanism ● How the interoceptive system works ● Dissociation and the freeze response ● How dissociation affects the body and how we feel pain ● The link to avoidance behavior ● Tools to bring yourself back from a state of dissociation ● Body dysmorphia and deficits in the visual system ● Living in the body to find a safe place to feel and heal ● Dissociation as an effect of peak somatic experiences Claim your two FREE weeks: https://rewiretrial.com FREE 1 Year Supply of Vitamin D + 5 Travel Packs from Athletic Greens when you use my exclusive offer: www.athleticgreens.com/rewired Interested in becoming a Neurosomatic Intelligence Coach? Feeling Emotions like Joy and Connection Can Be As Scary As Grief and Shame
In our first episode on emotional repression, we discussed how trauma can cause repressive behaviors and why emotional expression is necessary to living a healthy life. Today, we’re concluding the conversation by addressing two emotions that impedes the healing process: grief and shame. Matt Bush of Next Level Neuro is back to continue the discussion with hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff. To showcase the effects of grief on the nervous system, they all give examples of client experiences with repressed emotions and their own grief practices. Despite our innate need to express emotions and have connections with other human beings, expressing even positive emotions can be difficult. By the end of this episode, you’ll understand why positive emotions are so threatening to the nervous system and why minimum effective dose may be the key to healing. Listen in to learn about how to work through shame, the healing power of nature, and finding safety in emotional expression! Topics discussed in this episode: ● Why neuro trainers need to be trauma informed ● Jennifer’s grief practices and co-regulation ● How grief affects the nervous system ● Learning to connect with your grief ● Shame as an immobilizing and protective emotion ● Using NSI to work through shame ● Why positive emotions can be scary to the nervous system ● How our brain helps us heal Start your FREE Brain-Based Wellness 2-week neuro training and learn tools to support your Nervous System https://www.rewiretrial.com Get more information on the Neuro Somatic Intelligence Certification: https://www.neurosomaticintelligence.com?aff=traumarewired Join the Trauma Rewired Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/761101225132846 Connect with Matt Bush: https://www.nextlevelneuro.com/ and don't forget to mention Trauma Rewired!
