Controversial Thoughts: How broccoli could be bad for you

What if vegetables aren’t good for you, after all?   What if that spinach is causing your joint pain?   What if that kale is causing your stomach issues?   What if that broccoli is messing up your digestion and your thyroid?    If you think about things from the perspective of plants, the idea of plant toxicity makes much more sense.   Plants don’t want to be eaten, but they can’t run away like animals. This makes them very vulnerable to predation- thus, they have had to develop many defense chemicals.   In this week’s episode of Controversial Thoughts I discuss how broccoli might just be bad for you and how I think we’ve gone wrong in our thinking about vegetables...   I’d you’re new to the idea of #animalbased diets this video is for you!   #theremembering

107. Is there a way to reverse male (and female) hair loss? With Robert English

Rob English is a medical editor who specializes in hair loss disorders. He sits on the editorial board of Dermatology and Therapy, and he's the founder of perfecthairhealth.com – a website dedicated to showcasing evidence-based protocols for hair regrowth, with or without drugs. His fascination with hair loss began in 2007 – right after he was diagnosed with androgenic alopecia. Today, he spends his time managing a small team of researchers and teaching other hair loss sufferers how to avoid his treatment mistakes. By employing an approach that prioritizes education over product purchases and one-on-one support over "one-size-fits-all" solutions, he has helped thousands of men and women improve their hair loss – and on their terms (most often without drugs). You can see his clients' testimonials and find his work at perfecthairhealth.com.   Time stamps: 0:10:25 Podcast begins 0:11:30 Robert’s story of hair regrowth 0:21:35 Hormones and how they affect us and our performance 0:32:25 A Preliminary Investigation of the Enzymatic Inhibition of 5α-Reductase and Growth of Prostatic Carcinoma Cell Line LNCap-FGC by Natural Astaxanthin and Saw Palmetto Lipid Extract In Vitro 0:33:25 Everything is always dose dependent 0:36:05 What are the different types of hair loss? 0:48:35 Hair loss and how it relates to what we eat 0:54:32 Besides eating properly, what can we do to improve our hair growth? 1:12:25 Improving blood flow to the scalp and how it affects hair growth 1:17:45 Grey hair.. what causes it? 1:22:25 Robert's current experience with carnivore 1:26:15 Results of hair growth from carnivore 1:35:45 The general consensus is that diet does not help with hair regrowth 1:50:25 Reframing Nutritional Microbiota Studies To Reflect an Inherent Metabolic Flexibility of the Human Gut: a Narrative Review Focusing on High-Fat Diets 1:53:25 Further results of hair growth by simply changing their gut microbiota 2:07:55 What is the most radical thing Robert has done recently?   Sponsors: Heart & Soil: www.heartandsoil.co White Oak Pastures: www.Whiteoakpastures.com, use code: CarnivoreMD for 10% off your first order Belcampo: www.belcampo.com use code: CarnivoreMD for 20% off your order Sacred Hunting: www.sacredhunting.com/Paul for $250 off your hunt Joovv: www.joovv.com/paul

Controversial Thoughts: This is my why...

I felt compelled this week to share my "why," why I do what I do. This one is heartfelt. Hope you all enjoy it!   Simply put, the mainstream medical paradigm is inadequate and this leads millions to suffer unnecessarily. I've seen this in my life, my family, and my friends and it's something I want to be a part of changing.    Why have we accepted autoimmune illness, chronic pain, heart disease, cancer, dementia, and diabetes as the new normal?    I believe there is another way forward. #theremembering

106. Animal-Based vs Plant-Based, part 1.5. My response to Joel Fuhrman

In our first podcast I asked Joel to provide any interventional studies showing harm from red meat, or any unprocessed meat. He was unable to provide these studies at that time, or in the 2 weeks that followed before I released our podcast debate. After that time he wrote a blog post with his thoughts in response to many of the points I raised during the podcast, providing what he believed to be studies corroborating his points. This podcast is a solo-cast in which I respond to his blog post points to show some counter points and point out that I still do not believe his case for plant-based diets is able to be substantiated. I’ve reached out to Joel to see if he will come back on the podcast for a part two, but he has not yet responded. Will keep you posted! #theremembering Time stamps: 0:10:07 Did Dr. Joel Furhman ever send me those studies that demonstrated red meat has a damaging affect on humans? 0:12:42 Reviewing Dr. Joel Fuhrman's blog post regarding plant foods vs animal foods 0:18:27 Association of animal and plant protein intake with all-cause and cause-specific mortality 0:23:17 Meat intake and cause-specific mortality: a pooled analysis of asian prospective cohort studies 0:24:27 Mortality in british vegetarians 0:28:07 Physical activity patterns and biomarkers of cardiovascular disease risk in hunter-gatherers 0:29:25 Increased lean red meat intake does not elevate markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in humans 0:29:47 Isocaloric diets high in animal or plant protein reduce liver fat and inflammation in individuals with type 2 diabetes 0:30:08 Effects of plant and animal high protein diets on immune-inflammatory biomarkers: a 6-week intervention trial 0:30:37 Changes in Dietary Fat Intake Alter Plasma Levels of Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein and Lipoprotein(a) 0:34:47 Cancer incidence in vegetarians: results from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC-Oxford) 0:37:14 Mortality in vegetarians and comparable nonvegetarians in the United Kingdom 0:38:47 Beef tallow increases apoptosis and decreases aberrant crypt foci formation relative to soybean oil in rat colon 0:41:12 Potential effects of reduced red meat compared with increased fiber intake on glucose metabolism and liver fat content: a randomized and controlled dietary intervention study 0:44:27 Validity of U.S. nutritional surveillance:National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey caloric energy intake data, 1971-2010 0:47:47 Effect of Legumes as Part of a Low Glycemic Index Diet on Glycemic Control and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus - A Randomized Controlled Trial 0:50:37 Bean Consumption Is Associated with Greater Nutrient Intake, Reduced Systolic Blood Pressure, Lower Body Weight, and a Smaller Waist Circumference in Adults: Results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2002 0:57:52 The actions of exogenous leucine on mTOR signalling and amino acid transporters in human myotubes 1:01:37 Low Protein Intake Is Associated with a Major Reduction in IGF-1, Cancer, and Overall Mortality in the 65 and Younger but Not Older Population 1:05:27 Nutrition for the Japanese elderly 1:07:07 The capacity of foodstuffs to induce innate immune activation of human monocytes in vitro is dependent on food content of stimulants of Toll-like receptors 2 and 4 1:12:52 Fish oil attenuates omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid-induced dysbiosis and infectious colitis but impairs LPS dephosphorylation activity causing sepsis 1:16:07 Red meat and colon cancer: A review of mechanistic evidence for heme in the context of risk assessment methodology 1:19:32 Red meat enhances the colonic formation of the DNA adduct O6-carboxymethyl guanine: implications for colorectal cancer risk 1:24:07 Assessment of Causal Direction Between Gut Microbiota-Dependent Metabolites and Cardiometabolic Health: A Bidirectional Mendelian Randomization Analysis 1:25:27 Diabetes is Associ

Controversial Thoughts: Should you worry about vitamin A toxicity from liver?

Short answer: No.   Listen to this week's episode of Controversial Thoughts for the full breakdown. Come down the rabbit hole with me!   Here's are the cliff notes: In amounts consistent with what we would find in nature, there's no evidence that vitamin A is an issue and lots of evidence that the unique nutrients found in it are invaluable for optimal human health.   It's also totally safe for pregnancy in ancestrally consistent amounts (1-2 oz per day, ~ 8oz per week, or 6-12 capsules of Bone Marrow & Liver from @heartandsoilsupplements)    Don't trust, verify. Include liver in your life and see how you feel! I'm betting, you're going to level up in many ways!   #theremembering

105. Is going plant-based the solution to climate change? With Robby Sansom

Robby’s roots run deep in the natural food community. Previously, as CFO/COO at EPIC, Robby spent much of the last decade studying regenerative agriculture at ranches all over the world. Through this education, Force of Nature was co-founded with the intention to accelerate the creation of a global regenerative supply network. Force of Nature works in partnership with land stewards, ranchers and farmers committed to creating a positive return on the planet. With Force of Nature, consumers now have the ability to invest in environmental regeneration by consuming meat that is good for the planet. Born and raised in Austin, TX, he received both a bachelor’s degree and a master's degree from the University of Texas. When he’s not building businesses aimed at saving the planet, Robby can be found on a trail, ocean, mountain or field, always making time to appreciate nature and explore his surroundings. Robby is also a land steward at ROAM Ranch where he owns regeneratively managed bison.   Time stamps 0:10:02 Podcast begins 0:11:00 The complex topic of climate change: what are Robby's initial thoughts? 0:22:20 Why do we think that cows cause climate change in the first place? 0:32:10 The truth about methane and it's affect on climate change 0:34:30 How does raising cows differently change the way they impact our planet? 0:41:40 Animals and plants together makes a healthy ecosystem, you cannot have a healthy monocropped ecosystem 0:45:15 A visual difference of monocropped and regenerative farmland 0:49:00 Organic is not regenerative 0:53:30 The reason there is so much amazing soil in the US is because there were millions of ruminants on our land 0:57:15 Can we scale regenerative beef and feed enough people this way? 1:04:00 When you buy regenerative beef, you are helping support change in the US 1:06:00 Healthy soil is vital for our ecosystems to let rain infiltrate 1:16:20 We need to walk backwards and correct the worst decision we have ever made 1:18:45 Healthy soil is much more resilient 1:23:30 We don't need new technology, because there is no limit to how much carbon we can take out of the atmosphere when we switch towards regenerative agriculture 1:35:15 The price of purchasing grass-fed/finished vs. conventional meat 1:42:00 Wrapping up with Robby Sansom   Sponsors: Heart & Soil: www.heartandsoil.co https://forceofnature.com/discount/CARNIVOREMD White Oak Pastures: Whiteoakpastures.com, use code: CarnivoreMD for 10% off your first order Belcampo + Heart & Soil Sweepstakes (last chance!): https://belcampo.com/pages/heart-soil  Belcampo: www.belcampo.com use code: CarnivoreMD for 20% off your order Sacred Hunting: www.sacredhunting.com/Paul for $250 off your hunt Joovv:

104. Will Biden become the hamburglar or defend meat?

Rumors that Biden's climate plan might include limitations on red meat consumption turned out to be unfounded but mainstream threats against the most nutritious foods on the planet (animal meat and organs, especially red meat) remain very real!    In this episode of Controversial Thoughts, I attack many of the usual criticisms against meat head-on and discuss disturbing trends in our culture which continues to lean more and more anti-meat.    Consider this ammunition in your discussions with those who still believe cows are bad for the environment! You're welcome!   #theremembering
