Buffett, Terry Smith, Tarasoff - Plus Nvidia Goes WILD!

► Episode Notes: What’s too hard for Steve W? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Podcast! This week, there’s really only one story – Steve D is expecting a baby! Due in December, not much else really matters when there’s news like this around. There’s also news of another arrival, as Paul is back for a guest appearance! Blink and you’ll miss him, though – he’s a busy man these days. First up is the Berkshire 13F. Warren Buffett has been buying and selling, as usual, but why is Steve D doing victory laps? We’ve also got some other portfolio updates from big investors. Josh Tarasoff for Steve D and Terry Smith for Paul have been doing things that the Steves are interested in. After that, it’s time for the news from Nvidia – the stock blew the doors off its earnings report, specifically on guidance this week. Nothing bad to say about the company, but is this just AI noise? Lastly we’re looking at Deckers – a Steve D stock from a while ago. Never mind the Ugg brand, it’s the running shoes that have been racing up lately. Is the stock a buy for either Steve? Airtel, Experian, Forterra & Some NOT Rockstar Earnings

► Episode Notes: When is a UK stock not a UK stock? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! On this week’s show, we’ve got a load of earnings… and some chatter about the weather. And we’ve got some macro news and views, too. We’re starting things off with a discussion around the stock market. With the S&P 500 up over 9% this year, Steve W’s been looking at what’s been doing well and why. Then it’s on to Experian – our first UK stock that isn’t a UK stock because most of its business comes from the USA. With a huge moat and growth persisting through the downturn, could this be a buy? Next is Airtel Africa – another UK stock that does most of its business elsewhere. Steve D likes this one, but is a combination of Verizon and Paypal something investors should be interested in? After that, it’s firmly back in the UK with Forterra. Both Steves own this, but is a decline in revenue as inventories at homebuilders go high something to be concerned about? And we’re finishing up this week with TakeTwo. The GTA business is working through an acquisition, so the numbers are a mess, but is this a good place to invest at the moment? The New Disney?

► Episode Notes: What are the Steves using to attract people to mate with? Find out in this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! It was Paul’s birthday this week, but we’re kicking off with some other old people – Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger. The Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholder Meeting happened last week, but what does Steve D think Berkshire has in common with Manchester United? Then it’s on to Airbnb. The company reported earnings midweek and finished 17% down the week, but why does Steve W think the competition’s adverts show how far behind they are? Next it’s Disney – a shift away from Disney+ reduced losses, but is that the right move for the company at this point in time? Steve W thinks it’s the new Meta, Steve D has other ideas. And we’re finishing this week with Nintendo. Steve D owns this one and he’s been doing some interesting digging into what’s been carrying the company lately, with a Mario movie and some new Pokemon releases top of the pile. Big Oil Engineering A Supercycle? Plus Apple, Shopify & Mercado Libre Earnings!

► Episode Notes: Who can’t sell Steve D”s pants? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! This week, Steve and Steve are talking about earnings and macroeconomics. They’ve got the backs of their envelopes ready – so let’s dive in! Steve W has been listening to Jerome Powell and Jamie Dimon this week. But he thinks other people haven’t, so he’s interested in what the future looks like for rate hikes and bank crises. Steve D has been paying attention to the actual data. So he’s got some ideas about the job numbers, interest rates, and inflation from the US, but also the UK and Europe. After that, it’s back to the stocks, starting with BP. The stock is down this week but both Steves are bullish… so why is neither of them buying? MercadoLibre also reported earnings this week and they look good. Both Steves like this company, but the market wasn’t impressed with what it saw – any chance of a buy here? Next is Apple –Steve W owns it and Steve D doesn’t. With a $90bn buyback on the way, will Steve be chucking his investment into the pot for being retired? Last it’s on to Shopify. Twitter users want to know when this company is going to make any money – find out whether either Steve has the answer… Only on this week’s PlayingFTSE Podcast! ► Support the show: Appreciate the show and want to offer your support? Big Tech Earnings Rundown!

► Episode Notes: Who’s been getting a haircut this week? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Podcast! Steve and Steve are in to talk about earnings. This week, it’s the turn of the hyperscalers, with Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon on deck, so expect plenty about the cloud, AI, and advertising. First, though, it’s Tesla – we didn’t get round to this one last week, so Steve and Steve are kicking the show off with everyone’s favourite not-a-car company. Revenues are up and margins are down as Elon Musk pushes for volume at hte cost of margins, but is that the right strategy for the business at the moment? Then it’s on to Alphabet, a stock that both Steves own. Advertising revenue kept creeping forwards despite macroeconomic headwinds, but is ChatGPT about to eat the company’s lunch? Meta is next – a stock that’s much more in fashion with investors at the moment than fellow advertising machine Google. The company’s revenue is growing again, its costs are coming down, but should investors be concerned that it’s continuing to throw money into a metaverse project? After that, in a change from the hyperscaler run down, it’s time for Spotify – the company with the worst ad-supported platform in the world, according to Steve W. But nobody else agrees – monthly active users were up on the ad tier and the growth stock is doing very growthy things, meaning it could be one to keep an eye on for enterprising investors or people looking for good AI usage. Lastly, it’s Amazon – the business that does it all, or at least tries to. A slowdown in growth at AWS has investors concerned, but the Steves think there’s enough going on with e-commerce, advertising, and the rest of its operations to keep things interesting for the time being.  Only on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! ► Support the show: Appreciate the show and want to offer your support? Massive Earnings Rundown!

► Episode Notes: Who used to sell fish before getting into the electronics business? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Podcast! Steve and Steve have a lot to get through this week – it’s all been going on in the earnings division! We’ve got stocks from the UK, stocks from the US, and stocks going up, down and everywhere. First up it’s Entain – a Steve D holding that has it all. We’re talking acquisitions, regulation, growth, and more. When is a bank not a bank? Answer: when it’s Charles Schwab, which we’re on to next, with Steve W thinking he might join his co-pilot in the stock. After that, it’s Goldman, rounding out the US bank earnings for this quarter. Both Steves want to buy the investment bank, so why is neither of them thinking of doing it? Then it’s Netflix time. Lots to look at with this one – one that Steve D was right about, one that Steve W was right about, and the huge news that the company is winding down part of its business..! Next, we’re looking at Intuitive Surgical. This is another stock that the Steves admire and the business is surpassing expectations, but why does Steve W think that the robotic surgery company should be counted as a defensive stock? ASML follows – one of Steve D’s best investments. The stock has been down this week, but since the company has enough backlog to see it through all but the longest recessions, is that an overreaction to slowing orders? And we’re finishing the show with LAM research. A P/E of 14 is about to become a P/E of 20, but why do the Steves think it’s a good idea to buy this stock when it’s trading at higher multiple? Bankers, Buffett & The New Bezos!?

► Episode Notes: Who looks like they’e swallowed a Forterra brick? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Podcast! Steve and Steve have a lot to get through this week. They’re talking about Buffett, Banks, and the Piper Sandler survey of what US teens like buying.  But first of all, Steve W has some out-of-date news about Kellogg’s. The most exciting and dynamic company in the world has a suitably exciting and dynamic name for its new business – what is it? After that, it’s time for some news about Amazon.com. Andy Jassy has written his second ever annual newsletter to shareholders and the Steves are talking about logistics, AI, chips, and more. Next up is Warren Buffett, who’s been talking to CNBC lately. Steve W was entertained in what he’s done with his new Amazon shares and Steve D’s interested in what he’s up to in Japan. After that, it’s on to the US banks. Buffett might not trust their earnings but Steve W thinks they’re interesting. Which of the big US banks didn’t get a pop after earnings?  Lastly, we’re finishing with a survey of what US teens are buying – often an indication of the future. But what does either Steve know about being a teenage girl in the US?  Only on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! ► Support the show: Appreciate the show and want to offer your support? What We're Changing This Tax Year.

► Episode Notes: How will Yorkshire fare in this season’s County Championship? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Podcast… Steve and Steve are looking at the start of a new ISA season (not just the start of the County Championship). They’re talking investing principles, stocks on their radars, and whether or not to lump it in. First off, the Steves have been looking forward to this point for a while now. Steve W has his eye on bricks, banks, and buildings and Steve D has been buying all that and much more. After that it’s time for some other podcasts. To start with, Morgan Housel has a new book and accompanying show – Steve D’s been taking a look and a listen. And Steve W (prompted by Steve D) has been checking out the Howard Marks podcast. Both Steves think this is a really terrific one for investors wanting to think about markets, stocks, and investing. Lastly, TUI shares are up 10% on the day of recording (and the market hasn’t been open since). With debt faling and demand strong, could it be time to take a look at the maligned tour operator? UK Recession CANCELLED & 2 NEW Stocks!

► Episode Notes: How many pizzas can a robot make in an hour? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! Steve and Steve are in to see out the first quarter of 2023. We’re looking forward to the new ISA season and have some stocks on our radar.  But first, there’s been some news. No, really, there actually has – it feels like not much has happened this week (apart from more bank turbulence) but the Steves have stuff to discuss. First: the recession in the UK is cancelled. Again. I know we said this before, but we mean it this time. Steve W’s been looking at the latest revised data from the Office for National Statistics and wondering about its significance for two of the FTSE 100’s worst-performing stocks over the last year – Persimmon and SEGRO. Second: Morgan Stanley has released its top picks for investors focused on quality. The top three all come from unpromising sectors – a trucking company is #3 and a bank is #2. Top of the list, though, is one of Steve D’s very own stocks. What is it and why does it look like a winner? After that, it’s the bit that everyone loves. It’s new ISA season in the UK coming soon and we’ve got stocks to look at. Steve D has found a company called Middleby. They’re an impressive-looking restaurant equipment stock. A very nice business model that looks a bit like Intuitive Surgical with a P/E ratio under 20.  Steve W is also looking at the catering space, but at a company involved in much more disposable products. He’s got his eye on Bunzl, a FTSE 100 distributor of recyclable grocery packaging, disposable cutlery, road cones and more. The company resembles Diploma – a FTSE 250 stock Steve likes – and it also curiously resembles Middleby… All on this week’s PlayingFTSE Podcast! ► Support the show: Appreciate the show and want to offer your support? Realty Income's New Petrol Stations...

► Join Monzo: Get A Free £5! https://join.monzo.com/c/px6b2ry ► Episode Notes: Who’s home wifi is Steve W using? Find out in this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! There’s been a lot going on this week and Steve and Steve are here to talk about it. We’re talking UK banks, US banks, Wetherspoons and REITs. Kicking off is a look at the UK banking sector. Monzo (a company both Steves own shares in) has come up with a new feature to help people plan their emergency funds – is it something either Steve will be using? With interest rates rising, Steve D has been moving his money to take advantage. Where has he been looking and what’s the best rate a UK investor can hope to find in today’s environment? Steve W’s been looking at the latest earnings from J D Wetherspoon, which he mentioned a couple of weeks ago (and doesn’t own). The stock is 13.5% after its report, but what’s the catch behind that big cash flow number? After that, we’re going across the pond to the US. Steve D’s been following the latest from Jerome Powell and his views on interest rates following the banking issues. Anything exciting here? Lastly, dividend growth favourite Realty Income has been busy lately. They’ve agreed a $1.5bn sale and leaseback arrangement for some convenience stores, but what does Steve W (who owns this stock) think?
