Building a Flywheel Business: The Incredible Story of Momentous | CEO, Jeff Byers | Podcast series / Marketing

Sometimes the riskiest thing to do is play it safe. This is the incredible story and rise of the Momentous brand. 2016 was a remarkable year as four very different people headed down four very separate paths that in just a few short years would intersect in the most serendipitous way. Each person was at a different stage of life and experience but started to crank what bestselling author Jim Collins calls a flywheel. There was a young and recently retired NFL player, turned entrepreneur. A media mogul who started a VC firm. A high school student with a big idea. And last but not least, there was a former Bay Area Grom, who spent time in a youth detention center as a teen, but turned is life around with a passion for teaching science. In 2016 he would transfer from San Diego State to a new position at Stanford University.Collins writes, “No matter how dramatic the end result, good-to-great transformations never happen in one fell swoop. In building a great company there is no single defining action, no grand program, no one killer innovation, no solitary lucky break, no miracle moment. Rather, the process resembles relentlessly pushing a giant, heavy flywheel, turn upon turn, building momentum until a point of breakthrough, and beyond.”Special thanks to our sponsor Plunge!Introducing the all-new Plunge All-In! How to Be a Better Critical Thinker in Life & Business | Neil deGrasse Tyson

When I was a kid growing up in the 80s and 90s, one of my favorite shows, playing on repeat in reruns, was the Twilight Zone created by Rod Serling. It was a well written show where characters find themselves dealing with “disturbing or unusual events” that usually ended with an unexpected plot twist and moral to the story for everyone to ponder as food for thought. We are living in interesting times to say the least — it kind of feels like a Twilight Zone episode sometimes and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to know what is true and what is fiction. As a kid, the show was one of my first exposures to the idea of critical thinking, which by definition means, “the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment.” But critical thinking alone doesn’t always get us to the truth. And it turns out that humans are not naturally born with the gift of being objective. We really have to work at it. To think critically, we must be aware of our own biases and assumptions — and then apply consistent standards when considering the sources. Sources are tricky too. I remember a time when I believed what I saw on the news. Believed that doctors got into medicine just to help people. Believed that my religion was God’s true church on Earth and my church leaders upheld the highest standards of honesty and would never lie or do harm to anyone. This episode with Neil deGrasse Tyson is NOT about trying to break your shelf or dissuade you from your deeply held beliefs. It’s about learning more about critical thinking and the scientific method so you can figure out what is real and what fiction. To be a seeker of truth and not be caught up in the trap of group-think.I have only recently rediscovered one of the most credible sources of truth and light, has been within me all along. And if I had any advice, I think that’s a pretty good place to start.Special thanks to our sponsor Plunge!Introducing the all-new Plunge All-In! Vimeo is for creative professions like me and I use it several different ways:It’s a place for me to upload videos with a password for my clients to be able to review and download the work I’m doing for them.  There’s no compression or crushing of black colors or over- saturation like when I  upload to Youtube. My clients get the full 4K resolution HD as it was intended.I use it to host / broadcast live events…I also use Vimeo for my portfolio, case studies —and it never has annoying pre roll ads. I can create a customized player and keep people on my landing page so they don’t get distracted and go down the rabbit hole watching someone else’s stuff. What you may not know is that Vimeo can be used if you’re in HR to put all your on-boarding videos in one place.. you could do the same if you teach a course…put your vids behind a paywall  and charge for it.Need a videographer, Creative director or editor? Vimeo let’s you post jobs or find creative professionals. There are a ton more options so I would suggest checking them out. How to Build a Multi-Million Dollar Newsletter Business | Tyler Denk, Beehiiv | Podcast series / Marketing

You may not know Tyler Denk’s name yet, but you will. He looks like pretty normal a 20-something kid who came from a middle class neighborhood in Maryland — now transplanted to sunny Southern California. He’s hungry with ambition and got that look in his eyes -- like the eye of tiger. You know, that feeling we've all had when we thought we had the world in the palm of our hands.  Tyler is building what some might call a boring business —  a SASS product called Beehiiv for people who write and email newsletters. The thing is, newsletters are only boring if you suck at writing them. And there’s millions of dollars to be made from them with case studies like Alex Liberman and Austin Rief’s Morning Brew that sold for $75M where Tyler wrote most of the early code… There’s The Hustle which the Sam Parr sold for $25M to Hubspot and others. Tyler is self-made and he is anything but ordinary. If you’re into music you might know him from his world famous Big Desk Energy playlist on Spotify. After Morning Brew, he did a season at Youtube Music, got Covid in 2020 and had to cancel a much needed vacation to San Diego. Instead, he build what might be the world’s most intuitive and effective SASS product for great writers who want to build an audience via an amazing newsletter. If you know, you know. Enjoy this master class of newsletter marketing with Tyler Denk…Special thanks to our sponsor WeWork!Your working week deserves its little luxuries. Beautiful spaces to spark ideas in person.
