#167 - Ketone Esters: The 2020 State of the Art

Ketone esters. What's hype? What's real? What does the latest science say in 2020? Join experts Geoffrey Woo and Dr. Latt Mansor as they discuss everything known about ketone esters circa September 2020, from the very latest in published literature to the most edgy tests from elite performers. This is a quickly evolving research area and the use cases and best protocols are rapidly updating. Ketosis is a natural metabolic state described by elevated ketones in your body, commonly achieved via intermittent fasting or ketogenic diet. As more researchers are investigating the impact of ketones on physiology, metabolism and diseases, exogenous ketones like ketone esters provide a new avenue to achieve ketosis quickly and easily. This area has implications for human performance, longevity, neuroscience, cardiovascular health, metabolic health and beyond. This is the one to listen to if you want to learn all things ketones as of September 2020. _________________________________________________________ Watch this episode on Youtube: https://youtu.be/i3QpQa7_AnY Learn More About H.V.M.N. here: https://hvmn.com/blogs/podcast Join the Official H.V.M.N. #166 - Research Roundup: What happens when you mix *baking soda* with ketone esters?

Geoff and Latt are back on the Podcast! Today, they discuss Prof. Peter Hespel's new paper "Bicarbonate Unlocks the Ergogenic Action of Ketone Monoester Intake in Endurance Exercise" In Episode 163, we discussed the totality of data behind ketone esters. Some contexts show benefit, some contexts have shown no benefit for ketone esters. What are the deeper mechanisms behind these contradictory results? Geoff and Latt break down Prof. Hespel's exciting new paper that shows that a combination of sodium bicarbonate (or baking soda) in combination with ketone esters enhance performance upwards of 5%, while each alone show no benefit as compared to a glucose control. This one is a great one for athletes, coaches, and biohackers to learn the very latest recommendations and protocols of how to use ketone esters directly from Geoff and Latt. This one is also great for metabolism nerds who want to geek out about the subtle details relating to ketone esters including acidosis, pH buffering, how ion levels shift in muscles, and how these all interplay together. _____________________________________________ Watch this episode on Youtube: https://youtu.be/i3QpQa7_AnY Learn More About H.V.M.N. here: https://hvmn.com/pod Join the Official H.V.M.N. #165 - A Plant-Based Diet Approach to a Healthy Heart & More · Dr. Joel Kahn (America's Healthy Heart Doc)

It's no secret that the H.V.M.N. Podcast regularly features interviews from some of the top carnivore diet proponents out there. To name a few, our episodes with Mikhaila Peterson, Dr. Paul Saladino, Dr. Shawn Baker, and Ironman World Champion Pete Jacobs have all clearly struck a chord with our community. As an evidence-based podcast, we believe it is only fair to provide a platform that presents a different perspective in the "diet wars". Specifically, we have yet to have an in-depth discussion about plant-based diets and the science associated with a nutritional intervention many are increasingly adopting. Dr. Joel Kahn, known as "America's Healthy Heart Doc", has been a plant-based cardiologist for many years and treated thousands of acute heart attacks during his career. If there is a single point both sides (whether you're a hardcore carnivore or vegetarian) can agree on, it's that poor nutrition is a core cause of a number of chronic diseases - which traditional standard of care is still slowly coming to grips with. Instead of treating sickness and symptoms, Dr. Kahn now actively works to prevent (and reverse) disease, through a holistic lifestyle that incorporates nutrition, exercise, and the application of cutting-edge therapies. In Episode 165 of the H.V.M.N. Podcast, Geoff and Dr. Kahn discuss: · How Dr. Kahn first got into cardiology and what led him to commit to a plant-based diet. History of the rise of highly-processed foods, nuances of corporate-funded research, and experimenting with a plant-based keto diet. · The complicated ecosystem of fats, triglycerides, lipids, and lipoproteins in heart health. How should one think about cholesterol levels given all these factors? · Dr. Valter Longo's "Fast Mimicking Diet" - Why go on a calorie-restricted diet that mimics fasting than actually intermittent fasting?   You can follow Dr. Kahn and his work below: Website: https://www.drjoelkahn.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/drjkahn   🚨 Check out H.V.M.N's brand new MCT Oil Powder & Keto Collagen+ Hazelnut flavors here: https://hvmn.com/pod   Studies Mentioned 🔍 https://www.ornish.com/wp-content/uploads/Intensive-lifestyle-changes-for-reversal-of-coronary-heart-disease1.pdf https://www.amjmed.com/article/S0002-9343%2814%2900354-4/fulltext#:~:text=Heart%20disease%20was%20an%20uncommon,has%20persisted%20to%20the%20present. https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/article/91/3/502/4597078 https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/article/110/1/24/5494812 https://www.acc.org/latest-in-cardiology/articles/2019/07/02/08/05/lipoproteina-in-clinical-practice https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5670148/ https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fimmu.2019.00807/full https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-16138-3 https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/4/2/e003505   -------------------------------------------------------- Join the Official H.V.M.N. #163 - When Do Ketone Esters Work Best? Making Sense of Conflicting Data on Exogenous Ketones · Research Roundup

"Exogenous ketosis impacts neither performance nor muscle glycogen breakdown in prolonged endurance exercise". This is the title of a recent study on exogenous ketones impact on performance, and published by Professor Peter Hespel in The Journal of Applied Physiology. However, previous seminal research, including a study from Prof. Hespel and published in the same journal, found results that were strikingly different. "Ketone ester supplementation blunts overreaching symptoms during endurance training overload". One of the key findings of that study was that ketone ester intake following exercise markedly blunts the development of physiological symptoms indicating overreaching, and at the same time significantly enhances endurance exercise performance. A finding from this new study comes to the conclusion that ketone ester consumption during a simulated cycling race does not cause glycogen sparing, nor does it affect all-out performance. How does one make sense of conflicting (or even neutral) data? Geoffrey Woo and Dr. Latt Mansor (Research Lead at HVMN), are here in an episode of Research Roundup to break all this science down and provide clarity on when exogenous ketones work best, and where further research is needed (which seems to almost always be the case, right everyone? 😉).   References: https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/japplphysiol.00092.2020#B33 https://physoc.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1113/JP277831 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5556006/ H.V.M.N. #162 - The Sapien Diet: Adopting Ancestral Principles, Avoiding Food Lies, & Modern Nutrition Science · Brian Sanders (@Peak Human)

"That's how [Game Changers] made a whole film, they cherry-picked their data...I'd love to make a film that couldn't be debunked. That's my whole goal." Nutrient density, millions of years of human evolution, and modern nutrition science is the framework for the "Sapien Diet". Not to be mistaken as a trendy "one size fits all" diet, but a set of guidelines and principles Brian Sanders believes how the modern human should eat. Brian Sanders, who is the host of the Peak Human Podcast & filmmaker behind the upcoming Food Lies Film, has collated a variety of perspectives on optimal nutrition and performance throughout his health journey and research. Although Brian is of the mind that nutrition lies on a spectrum and should be personalized for an individual, his Sapien Diet framework largely revolves around eating a single constant: Animal-based foods, while avoiding the obvious: Highly-processed and refined foods. The recent demonization of meat is somewhat of an oddity, given that it has historically been directly tied to the advance of human evolution. With plant-based diets on the rise, the opposite camp of the "diet wars" (carnivores) have been resistant to the mainstream popularization of plant-based nutrition. Who is right? Who is wrong? Geoffrey Woo & Brian Sanders have an informative discussion on the spectrum of nutrition, the dangers of falling too deep into microscopic research, and why the current science & historical nature of animal-based nutrition trumps a plant-based diet.   Where to find Brian 👇 Food Lies Film: https://www.foodlies.org/ Peak Human Podcast: https://www.peak-human.com/ Twitter, Youtube, & Instagram: @FoodLies   -------------------------   Father's Day is coming up!
