#160 - Modern Leadership: We Need Communication, Transparency, and Empathy...NOW

Less than half a year into 2020, we've experienced global, tectonic shifts that are still being felt now. It's time for modern leadership. Common attributes of leadership, such as assertiveness and charisma, are simply no longer enough in the current climate. As society becomes more connected and multi-faceted, our leaders must evolve as well. Communication, transparency, and empathy. Geoffrey Woo, founder of H.V.M.N., strongly believes these are traits essential for effective leadership. A leader that listens, a leader that unites. This is an element that has largely been lacking during these times of crises...this is what must be fixed. The H.V.M.N. Podcast will be donating all of the ad revenue we receive during the month of June to Talent x Opportunity (TxO) fund, a fund designed to invest in underrepresented and underserved founders. We hope that the leaders of the next generation will build a healthy future for all of humanity. #159 - Blood Glucose Regulation: A Guide to Glycemic Index, Continuous Glucose Monitoring, & Intermittent Fasting · Kara Collier, RDN

Kara Collier, the Director of Nutrition at Nutrisense, is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Nutrition Support Clinician who specializes in glucose control and metabolism. Kara, drawn to the power of continuous glucose monitors (CGM's), has meticulously experimented with various foods and the impact they would have on her blood glucose levels. By having real-time data tracked over years on a spreadsheet, CGM's have been indispensable tool that has helped (& continues to!) fine-tune her diet. With her previous experience working in traditional hospital institutions and becoming fed up with the shortcomings of standard care (recalling regular instances where metabolically-impaired patients were given soda & highly processed foods), Kara knew that truly personalized nutrition was the future - and she is working tirelessly to spread the message. For example, the effects of intermittent fasting between men and women seem to differ in substantial ways that are recently coming into light. Geoff & Kara dive into the nuances of that much-requested topic, low-carb and ketogenic diets, quality of food, and more in this podcast episode!   Check out Nutrisense here: https://go.hvmn.com/nutrisense PRODUCER NOTE: This episode was recorded on April 16th, 2020.   ----------------------------------------------------------------   Prefer video? #158 - Lance Armstrong Gets Real: Le Tour Training, Quarantine Living, & Evolving Cycling

With no stone left unturned from the past, Lance Armstrong pulls back the curtain on his cycling career, why he's thriving under quarantine (& decided to ditch alcohol), and how he's focusing on the path forward. Averaging 400-500 watts over a 30-minute interval (something a typical 25-year-old could do for only 30 seconds) Lance had nearly superhuman-level abilities. "It really wasn't [the doping]. At this point, I'm not here to fool or lie to anybody...but it wasn't. That was step 11 in a 10 step process. We put a lot of work into the team." In this podcast interview, Geoff Woo and Lance discuss the current coronavirus epidemic, beating cancer, war stories from the Le Tour days, preserving a competitive spirit, and how the global sport of cycling should evolve.   Check out Lance's podcast "The Move" here: https://wedu.team/themove   ---------------------------------------------------------------- Watch this episode on Youtube: https://youtu.be/CEiQtpe8fik Join the Official H.V.M.N. #157 - Coronavirus Crisis Finally Reveals Metabolic Dysfunction as the True Pandemic? · Dr. Paul Saladino

"Absolutely there are diets that can protect you against coronavirus. The health of an individual at a metabolic level is...everything." Dr. Paul Saladino is the leading authority on the science and application of the carnivore diet. He has used this diet to reverse autoimmunity, chronic inflammation and mental health issues in hundreds of patients, many of whom had been told their conditions were untreatable. Since the beginning of the global COVID-19 crisis, Dr. Saladino has been boldly voicing his opinions on how various countries implemented their lockdown policies and why the best, science-driven way to protect yourself begins with the root cause of so many diseases in the first place... The state of your metabolic health. According to this study (https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/met.2018.0105), only 12% of Americans are considered metabolically healthy. While there has not been formal random controlled trials published just yet, there is a strong case to be made with existing and emerging correlating data / science suggesting that the state of one's metabolic health is an essential factor when faced with the virus. In this in-depth podcast interview, Geoff Woo & Dr. Paul Saladino discuss the timeline of the coronavirus, how skewed messaging is being pushed by the media, his evolved guidance for the carnivore diet and how insulin resistance is linked to immune system function, and even delve into some fascinating hypotheses that put the coronavirus' actual danger to human health into question.   Producer's Note: This episode was originally recorded on 05/05/2020. #156 - Apolo Ohno (8x Olympic Medalist) Reveals His Mental Hacks for Success

Apolo Anton Ohno has a remarkable track record as an athlete, becoming the most decorated American Olympian at the Winter Olympics and inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. Post-sport career (& post "Dancing With the Stars" fame, as we're sure some are aware), Apolo continues to blaze new paths for himself and dedicates much of his time empowering others to reach their own goals. In this podcast interview, Apolo firmly states that he was at a factual, physiological disadvantage during his short track speed skating competitions when compared to his competitors. So, how did Apolo come out so frequently on top? What was he doing differently? How did he win 8 Olympic medals? As much as he was training his body for peak physical performance, he was also training his mind...if not even harder than his body. Pushing his mental game to the absolute limit, sharpening it, and continuously channeling it (all the way from training to race day) was his secret weapon. His mind was the key to success. The mental resilience and competitive edge he built up during his athletic career were never lost. Apolo, with unwavering discipline, continually adapts that performance mindset to support ongoing personal and professional growth. From following a cyclical keto diet to intermittent fasting, Apolo stays on top of both his mental and physical game. #155 - Intermittent Fasting During Quarantine & Effects on Immune System - Should You Do It?

Could intermittent fasting or time restricted eating help you stay safe from the coronavirus? Is it a good idea to put the human body under metabolic "stress", when many are already faced with a particularly stressful time? It's not a simple "Yes" or "No" answer. In this podcast, Geoffrey Woo & Dr. Latt Mansor explore the existing scientific literature behind intermittent fasting and dive deep into a recently published study, which showed that healthy participants actually boosted their immune system through 30 days of consecutive fasting. Extrapolating data from both this study and others, they come to their own conclusions and offer their best guidance to how one should think about intermittent fasting during the COVID-19 crisis. #153 - Running Through Hell: Enduring Ultrarunning & Boosting Mental Health · Lisa Tamati

Lisa Tamati is a professional ultra endurance athlete who has crushed some of the toughest endurance events in the world, such as the grueling Badwater Ultramarathon held in Death Valley. Lisa became the first woman from New Zealand to complete this infamous race. Lisa’s adventures have taken her far and wide, including a harrowing expedition through the Libyan Desert that nearly killed her. Despite having over 140 ultramarathons under her belt and achieving various accomplishments, Lisa has also struggled with her mental health - battling with her self esteem, body image, depression, fear, and anxiety. Ultrarunning forced Lisa to learn how to sharpen her mental health and push her physical limits even through traumatic events. In this interview, Lisa goes into great detail about how both her athletic & general life experiences (both positive & negative) made her become the woman she is today. When her mother had an aneurism and fell critically ill, she was unresponsive to the doctors’ standard of healthcare. Lisa then took matters into her own hands and saved her mother’s life through a self-researched protocol that incorporated hyperbaric oxygen therapy, targeted nutrition, nootropics, and more. After 4 years, Lisa’s mother is now healthy - regaining her cognition, peripheral vision, and driver’s license. Lisa has ran through hell & back, and dedicates much of her time now motivating and training others become the best they can be. #152 - Eat More Fat? Eat Less Carbs? The Priority is PROTEIN (P:E Diet) · Dr. Ted Naiman

With over 100,000 patient interactions and two decades of experience as a board-certified Family Medicine physician, Dr. Ted Naiman continues to accumulate a wide spectrum of knowledge regarding nutrition, fitness, and the keys to optimal human health. Most recently, Dr. Naiman collated his work into his book: 'The P:E Diet'. He makes it clear that he does not follow specific diet dogma (keto, paleo, carnivore, vegan, etc), but that his P:E Diet (protein vs. energy) explains the success of every successful diet out there. In an excerpt in the book, Dr. Naiman states... "What EXACTLY were the differences between the diet and exercise of these healthy elites versus those plagued by chronic disease? Gradually I came to the realization that the principles at work were unbelievably simple, and equally simple to implement. The rules for diet were so basic that I couldn’t believe I hadn’t realized them earlier. Target nutrient density—mostly just protein and minerals—while minimizing toxins, including the energy toxicity of exceeding your carbohydrate and fat storage." Host Geoff Woo and Dr. Naiman discuss the delicate balance of metabolic substrates, why protein should be the building block for an energy-dense diet, the preferred intermittent fasting & time-restricted feeding schedule, the state of the carnivore community, the potential flaws of the popular 'carbohydrate insulin hypothesis', and accessible tips for bodyweight training / weight loss.
